Visited Lynton and Lynmouth today. After looking around shops in both areas popped in Esplanade fish bar in Lynmouth for some traditional fish and chips. On entering, our furry friend Vinnie was offered a dog treat by a very friendly staff member. You can eat in or take away,we choose to eat in. We ordered cod and chips, cooked fresh. Within 5 minutes of ordering our order arrived. A lovely tasty crispy batter and thick flaky cod with a decent portion of chips . We've been to many seaside chippies on our travels in the UK, can honestly say this rates high up there. Lovely setting , very polite staff ,clean and fitted out inside nicely but most of all top end fish and chips. Highly recommend a visit.

Visited twice during our stay in Lynmouth, first tine chips only, second tme haddock & chips x 2. All the food was freshly cooked, the batter was very light and the chips were amazing.

Visited here twice during our holiday, first when we arrived then another time during the week. Cooked to order so very fresh, not greasy, good portions and not expensive like so many eateries in the area, charging top end . To be noted that there is seating at the back and they accept dogs which isn’t well advertised.

Really thoughtfully made food; in my case I ordered the Breaded whitebait which was a delight to eat! It’s perfect for a pescatarian/halal diet as their oil isn’t from broth of other animals but peanut oil I believe. Would come back here if I visit Exmoor!

Some of the nicest cod and chips I've ever eaten

Very friendly customer service. Someone placed 28 orders before us and I must say, we got ours pretty sharpish. We came here in the same hour after getting white baits from The Harbour Shed. Which was atrocious by the way in portion size and customer service. It was so bad there we thought we would get white baits here coz it was about 3 mouthfuls only. Esplanade on the other hand d exceeded our expectations. Good portion size and 25p cheaper than The Harbour Shed. The portion is 5-6 times more as well. See pics for comparison. I would say that the portion size for Esplanade is normal but the Harbour Shed….? I don’t know what the heck they were playing at. Boxes are the same size by the way. When in Lynton and you fancy white baits for snacks, go to Esplanade! Definitely don’t go to Harbour Shed. Well done Esplanade for your fresh tasting white baits, great customer service and reasonable pricing. 😊

I have tried fish and chips around here in Devon, I can say this is the Best fish and chips Ive ever had in my life. Although a bit of travel for us, we don’t mind just to taste it all over again. They are busy most of the time as you will gather that because of how excellent it is but worth the long que! I always go for haddock and chips and their curry sauce is out of this world!!!! I normally don’t put reviews as sometimes waste of time but this made me do one! Absolute delicious! Will always be my top 1!!

As most places stopped serving food at 3pm we opted for fish snd chips x 2 £23. No queue! Lovely and fresh food lots of flavour and tasted super against the backdrop of the harbour.

Very popular chippy with quite a long queue when we arrived. The fish was amazingly good although they only had cod left when we arrived. The chips were nice but did not stand out as much as the fish. We also really enjoyed their homemade curry sauce. We grabbed our food and ate by the sea wall although they do have some tables inside if it's raining.

Possibly the best fish and chips I've ever had! Both were piping hot and fresh out of the fryer. Fish was crispy and not a hint of oil! And let me not forget the curry sauce....wow!

Ace Chippy. like to think of myself as a chip connoisseur and would place the fish and chips to be some of the best ive had , maybe not Theeeeee best but pretty decent none the less.. Expect a Long queue which should tell u all you need to know about the food here.

Just arrived in Lynmouth for a brief stay. The day was overcast and damp so we wanted to sit inside. Staff shortage meant that was not an option. They made up for that disappointment with some of the best fish n chips we’ve ever had. Cod n chips twice was the order and there wasn’t a blemish on any of the chips. The cod was flaky and really tasty. Hardly any oil to be seen. The service excellent. The price £24…ouch! We don’t have fish n chips often so the price was a shock but we would happily pay that again for that quality. The reason we don’t have this meal often (apart from health of course 🤣) is because there is always too much oil along with bruised and spoiled chips. Esplanade has restored our faith. Just wish it was local to us. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Well done!

Waited around 20 minutes for a portion of chips and the size for £4 was ridiculous, a few mouthfuls at most, so would not recommended due to the price for what you get.

I have visited The Esplanade fish bar on numerous occasions and each time I find the food tasty and there is a good menu choice.

Probably the best fried piece of haddock I've ever had. Just a wonderful culinary delight. Fish was flaky and meat, batter was crispy and light. Outstanding fast food 👌

The best chippy I’ve ever had, Sam’s famous fish cake was the best I’ve ever tasted, the curry sauce was definitely the best I’ve ever tasted and I rate the service highly too, even when busy we weren’t waiting long for food.

In my opinion, The Esplanade sells some of the finest fish and chips money can buy. The batter is thin and crispy, and cracks open to reveal the very finest cod. Fish and chips as they should be. Excellent!!

The location of this chippy is really good. It’s extremely close to the sea and beachfront with a fantastic view. The actual fish and chips are average and not much different to anywhere else in the U.K. The service however is awful, I asked for two specific fish that had just been freshly battered and was served with two that had been sat there 25 minutes. Upon notifying the server that those were not the fish I ordered they changed them thankfully with the fresh ones whilst making passive aggressive comments and looks. Unfortunate.

Really enjoyed our fish and chips here. Although we arrived at almost closing we could only have what was left but what we had was very enjoyable.

Got here 355pm. People were ordering and waiting for food. Got to my turn to order to be told they weren't taking orders... For a whole 35 mins. Despite having hungry kids with us and someone literally ordering in front of us. AND plenty of food available. Really mean spirited.

Best fish and chips we've had in ages. Not cheap but absolutely delicious with lovely friendly staff. No trip to the beach would be complete without fish and chips. Just lovely.

Had the best fish and chips we have had for a long while, we sat on the bench across the road to eat them reminiscent of our youth, the fish was so sweet and moist and the chips crunchy on the outside but fluffy on the inside , great value for money as well especially as it’s near the coast.

There are many places to get Fish & Chips in L&L but this place always gets my vote! It’s quality over quantity (although you still get plenty) - their cod is just the nicest you’ll ever find. The batter is superb, and doesn’t give me heartburn like many batter recipes, the chips are completely moorish and their curry sauce has some sort of magic ingredient which I just can’t get enough of… we live here and our entire (extended) family insist on a visit here when they visit. It was also my late father-in-law’s favourite place to eat! Trust me, it’s worth the queue! :)

We have visited this place many times over the years and have found it always to be a great place for food, large tasty portions. This recent visit proved to be a massive disappointment!!! I ordered a large fish and cheesey chips with a curry sauce, that cost just under £14.50. The fish was quite small for £7.50, the chips had no cheese on them a was a very small portion for £5.00 I was very disappointed because I was looking forward to the cheesey chips!!! (I couldn't go back to complain because we had driven off somewhere to eat them and the queue was quite long). I will not be purchasing food from there again!! In the past you could have fed 2 people on the fish and chips because of the large portions. We visit Burnham on Sea quite a bit and there are 2 fish shops which offer huge portions of lovely chips for less money. A portion of fish and chips there is so big we usually share the chips and end up feeding the seagulls and the dog with the leftovers!!

We visited this establishment last night at about 7.45 and after a short wait, we were served. We asked for 2 cod and chips and a steak and ale pie with chips. I rarely review fish and chips shops but we were all quite disappointed with what we received once we got it back to our campsite. Our food totally about £33 which even by today's standards is very expensive. My chips were very nice but quite small in size and the same with my wife and daughters portions. The cod was nicely cooked but after we ate this we all went back out to another takeaway in Minehead as we were all still hungry. To conclude, food good but nowhere near enough for the price paid.

Never in my life have felt the need to ask for a refund on a pack of chips before, but after paying £3.10 for a 'small portion of chips', I was presented with a tiny cardboard cup with around three quarters of a potato's worth of chips inside. Having been born in the UK and practically raised on Fish n Chips, I've eaten in hundreds of chipies around the country over the years, and I'm very used to the cook shovelling in enough to feed a small army for that price, smothering them with vinegar and salt. This measly portion wasn't enough for a toddler to snack on let alone a grone man. I get the weather last year and this year has affected the price of by up to 20%, but a large baking potato is currently 0.23p in Tesco (so not even wholesale,) and given this cup didn't even hold one whole potato, and even taking into account higher prices for electricity and oil, we are still talking about a huge mark up for the amount served. This is a local chippie not some gourmet potato bar. Maybe they think they can get away with it because the majority of people are transient tourists just passing through, rather than regular customers, but it made me leave Lynmouth after a lovely trip up the railway and through their beautiful town, with a bitter taste in my mouth....rather than the lovely taste of some quality english greasy chips. Sad days.

We looked at the website menu and chose items listed for our meal, when we asked for those items we where told they didn't do them, what's the point of doing a menu when you don't do what's on it.

We decided to have fish and chips by the see and have been to Esplanade before. So we ordered a small fish and chips each. In fact they were kids portions. It was a quiet Wednesday and everything was being cooked to order, there was a delay hence only four stars. Then we did get our portions they were absolutely delicious and were perfect. The batter was crispy and the fish inside was cooked perfectly. The chips were also cooked just right. Then onto the beach.

I will start by saying the fish and chip here are very good And that is why we travel forty-five minutes to it But the last two times we have been to Lynmouth to get fish and chips here on different days in the week We have been very disappointed that they have been closed despite the sign on the board saying that they are open for 12pm to 7pm there was no notice on the website and nothing on the door to say anything different so only go if your certain that they are open Come on guys you can't say on the website and board that your open 12pm To 7pm and just close when you like your not doing yourselves any favors letting customers down

I visited this fish 'n' chip shop on a busy Saturday lunchtime. They operate a numbered system whereby you place your order at the counter and are then called forward when your food order is ready to collect. The system works well. Friendly staff and great fish 'n' chips. There is a seating area inside apparently, though I wasn't aware of this at the time. Highly recommended.

Great little chippy in the front, nice sea view and wall opposite to sit on and munch your food. Reasonably price for a sea side eatery.

Popped in for lunch while on holiday. Lovely fish and chips. Was good to see the fish was responsibly sourced. They were busy but handled it well.

Had an absolute fabulous fish and chips here today . The food was cooked to order . The chips were crisp and dry . The fish was so beautiful just melted in your mouth with a gorgeous golden non oily batter . Well done Joe the top fryer !!

On a nice sunny afternoon, we decided to get fish and chips. Worst decision. The batter on the fish was like a rock; I couldn't eat it. Definitely not worth £11.50.

Fish and chips were a weekly staple as a boy but are now expensive enough to make them a bit if a luxury. So, if you're going to splash out, choose your chippie with care. This is a really good choice, with hot, fresh and well-cooked food served by pleasant and polite people. Enjoy!

Fresh cooked food and very generous portions. We eat in and the restaurant is clean tidy and well laid out, great modern but pleasing vibe. I will definitely return.

I’d rate the fish and chips as ten out of five! Fried in lard and peanut oil. Absolutely ravishing. We ate in at the back of the premises. Sat down with all the trimmings including a large pot of tea. Perfection

Previously this has been our favourite place for fish & chips! Today, we came for another homage to Lynmouth, & what a disappointment! The batter was completely wrong, & the fish was encased in a horrible thick, hard handbag style casing. The fish was tasteless & the meals were very dry! It was not cheap. Very poor quality. I regrettably would not recommend to anyone.🤢

One sign advises ground nut oil, another to the right advises peanuts included. Luckily this was noticed after queuing, when signs were effectively obscured by people in front. This could have been a very bad end to our daytrip although not as catastrophic as for some. Unfortunately, we had to go elsewhere.

There are a few fish n chip shops in Lynmouth and I checked the Google reviews before choosing this one. The location is right on the harbour front and it is high season, so you expect to pay premium prices. Fish was 7.50 I think, chips were 4 quid. I could live with that. They were OK too. However ... charging 80p for each plastic pot of tartare sauce, mayo and even tomato ketchup was outright gouging. We ended up wanting three tartares, two ketchups and one mayo, adding a massive £4.20. Even the staff looked a bit embarassed. Management/owners, if you read this, please stop gouging. 20p, 40p even ... but not 80p. Spoiled our meal as we felt ripped-off.

Wanted jumbo battered sausage and chips but was told they can't batter a jumbo for some strange reason. Was offered 2 smalls but not paying £4 for that. Chips looked like half a portion. Saying this food was hot and nice. Up the portion size and batter a jumbo sausage and it would be 4 star.

We visit Exmoor a couple of times a year and make a point of a visit here, even if we have to queue in summer. The cod and chips are glorious, not greasy. Freshly cooked and everything plastic free. Thank you!

Nice food but service way way too slow. There wasn’t many people in front of us, only enough to make us think we might be queueing 10 or so minutes but from joining the queue to getting our food was over 45 minutes. Shocking system In place and the 2 lads cooking the food seemed to just be messing around. As I said the food was good but need to sort out a better system for being quicker

Food is excellent. The curry sauce for any northerners is the Chinese/Irish curry sauce - not quite as good as back home but still decent! Fish was a good thick piece. I guess only criticism would be it’s very expensive. 3 meals cost us £29 but the food at least was very good. Lovely friendly staff

I’ve been coming to this fish and chip shop since I was young and with trepidation I brought my partner for her first experience of it. It was even better than I remember - Hot and freshly cooked and an absolutely massive portion (we brought half of it back to where we’re staying and had another meal) Not the cheapest fish and chips you’ll find but you won’t be disappointed.

Couldn't fault the fish and chips we had. The Fish was beautifully cooked, crispy and not greasy at all. The chips were nicely cooked. Curry sauce was delicious. Only critism is It's fairly expensive for the quantity, but I guess it's to expected in this location

Fresh chips! Very hot! Enjoyed sitting on the boulders opposite the shop, despite the rain it was lovely to sit and enjoy the seaview. Well priced and just what we wanted.

For lunch had a cone of chips on the sea front they was the best chips we had all holiday they tasted really nice, hot and fresh and the dips tasted really good too.

The fish was delicious, crispy, fluffy chips and everything was fresh and piping hot. The curry sauce was absolutely delicious too. Every time we come to Exmoor a visit here is a must. Non greasy chips, freshly fried. White flaky cod in lovely batter, again no grease. Just the best in the area, and beyond. Leave room for a Mavis Thrupton’s of Lynmouth Whippy cone from the Style’s booth. Amazing quality ice cream.

Two cod and chips. Very pleasant service. Short wait (take away). Nice piece of lemon. A little pricey but excellent food. Would recommend and go again if in the area.

Nice food, but boy did it take forever to get served. I must have queued for 20 minutes plus. Not particularly plentiful portions either. I suppose its a captive market. If there was no queue, I'd go back, but if there was a long queue again I'd go somewhere else. Good, but not spectacular. Not cheap either.

Been coming here for a few years now, service was ok but the food and location is always perfect.

Called in here for fish n chips as we were reliably informed these were the best in the area. We certainly weren’t disappointed! There was a large queue outside which is always a good sign you’re in the right place! We wanted to eat inside so put one person in the queue, the rest of us went to secure some tables in the rear where the seating area is. The menu is standard fish n chip bar menu with some decent seating indoors if you don’t want to take away. I had the chips which were amazing, not too greasy and very tasty! A fish cake which was also top quality and a jumbo sausage which again was very good. Based on this experience I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend, despite being really busy service was fast and the place was clean and tidy.

Been here several times food has never disappointed cod is normally ready if you want haddock it’s cooked to order definitely worth the wait. One thing to note is everything is fried in ground nut oil so if you have a nut allergy be careful.

Excellent quality, but mean portion sizes for the money, particularly with the chips. You also have to pay for NAPKINS?!?

Came to lynmouth for our honeymoon, first stop as soon as we arrived was to esplanade fish bar! It’s the best fish and chips around! Staff are so friendly and when I messaged to say we were coming here for our honeymoon (to sit on the beautiful harbour wall looking out to sea whilst eating our fish) they were very helpful. There are queues as it’s so popular so I recommend to arrive early, but that doesn’t take away how delicious the food is and how lovely the staff are. Thank you so much guys! Nicky and Jack x

There was a queue all day at this place and service was slow but steady. The service seemed efficient and staff clearly were good at communicating and working a process to remain calm. If anything, I would have liked service to be a bit quicker, but can appreciate the volume of orders they receive and the need to place the job. The staff were friendly despite being busy.The quality and portion size of the fish and chips was good. The batter was very tasty and I can see why it is described as award winning. It would have been good if there was a battered jumbo sausage option, as it would not have taken too much effort to batter one. The child’s cod and chips portion was generously sized. The price was a bit on the expensive side, especially with condiments. However, the quality of the food made the price acceptable. I loved the specials board and the choice to have grilled fish. There was a good range of fish to choose from. Keep up the good work.

Good-sized portions, freshly cooked, reasonable value for money, (although 70p for ketchup portion was over the top). We ate ours on a bench in the nearby park, in the sunshine, lovely!

Lovely fish and chips. Slightly off service. Late opening, and no polite ‘be with you in a minute folks’. Just ignored. When opened, no or very little food ready. Odd…Large queue building up, haphazardly around the shop front (which they block with a chain - nice). No reference to the queuing system until they decide to open, then asked to rearrange ourselves. That could have been part of some better timed banter with waiting customers in the lead up to opening. Still, I’m sure they will keep trading just fine on basis of their decent food. Just thought it was a shame they weren’t amazing on other fronts too. Oh, and also, 70p is taking the ‘kin p1ss for a bit of ketchup.

We ate here whilst staying in the Lynmouth area and the food was once again amazing. We shared mozzarella sticks and chips and each had a haddock. The fish was lovely and fresh with a lovely light crispy batter and went well with their tartare sauce. Would highly recommend eating here whilst in the area.

We try and go here for fish and chips whenever we are in the area, and they never disappoint. Went here on Wednesday after going for a walk up to countisbury via watersmeet. The fish and chips were just what we needed and were a damn sight better than the ones we paid way over the odds for in Padstein a few weeks ago. The chips were perfect and the fish was delicious with amazingly crispy batter. Will definitely continue to go whenever in the area.
