Squires Fish Restaurant in North Devon

Wow, if you’re near, this is a must. The cod is battered to perfection. The servers felt our sizes were too small and so brought us some extra portions at no extra cost. We also ordered whitebait, they accidentally gave us three portions instead of two. Everything was brilliant, and the prices are also so reasonable. If you’re wondering what to order, we felt the cod meal, which includes a side and drink. The squid tasted very fresh, so that is also recommended. The curry sauce is also a must, I’m sure the sauce is the same as the sauce used in the fish curry they offer as a main, and it is divine. Go for that too. All in all, I’d highly recommend 🙂👍🏻

Well worth its rating on here! We went this evening for fish & chips, the meals were massive and tasted great. Staff friendly and lots of them, so service was super quick!, we sat in and found it very nice inside The only thing I would like to see on the menu is fish bites as there is my go-to at the chippy

I have visited squires multiple times recently as well as when I was younger. Always good service, good staff and good food. No issues or complaints. Enjoyable experience. Would happily keep revisiting and recommend to others :)

After living in the SW for nearly 10 years we had pretty much given up on finding a chip shop which was anywhere near as good as those we used to find on every street corner in the North. Until today. Visited Squires in Broughton after doing a search for the best chippy in Somerset or Devon. A bit of a drive (over an hour) but boy was it worth it. The fish and chip deal (£14.95) was awesome. Perfect fresh cod, perfect chips and choice of side and a drink. Four very big fillets were brought to our table by very well presented and professional staff. Just as we were about to start, another member of staff came over with another (5th piece) of cod. We mentioned we hadn’t ordered it but he advised us that as our fish were smaller than usual they were giving us an extra portion. (Thing is , our portions were already very large) Superb food, superb staff and service coupled with very reasonable prices and a car park bang opposite. Squires will be our go to restaurant from now on. Perfect all around

Cannot recommend HIGHLY ENOUGH Staying in Croyde and recommended to come to Squires. Simply outstanding Fish and Chips, the portions, quality and taste is surreal. The curry sauce is a whole new level or exquisite, moorish heaven and have been back two days in a row and likely back again far too soon again!! The fish is cooked to perfection - batter best I’ve had. Chips are everything you hope for and the price and service is amazing! Will be back (probably a lot while we are staying here!).

Squires has always been a firm highlight of our holidays in Devon over the last 20 years. However, last night just did not hit the spot. The wait for the table despite booking, individuals arriving after us and being seated first despite having the same booking time and being placed on the same layout of table. The size of the fish on the award winning fish and chips was super disappointing. Where have the days gone when they would bring you an additional slice when the fish wasn’t ’big enough’. Unless the uplift in the cost has also meant a reduction in the size to a ‘medium’, which means it’s no longer value for money. Finally, drinks arriving after our meal, in a tiny glass because ‘sorry we’ve ran out of larger glasses’ - larger being the normal glasses provided for a soft drink. We left feeling disappointed, with our hunger not being satiated!

The atmosphere of the restaurant is really excellent. The staff were very friendly and efficient and despite the restaurant being full our order was taken quickly and the food arrived freshly cooked within a short wait. The food was delicious and not overpriced as many fish and chip restaurants seem to have become. Definitely highly recommend this for a high quality meal!

Fresh, tasty and not greasy - we loved the fish, sausage and chips from Squires. Online order and collection worked really well too.

Quick update at bottom of the page so i call in to squires fish and chip take away while passing through Braunton. called in for a medium sized battered cod. the place was super clean and lots of staff. was busy but turn around was fast. regarding the fish it was hands down the tastiest cod i have ever had. flawless. the batter was super tasty also. will call in again for sure. very impressed. this was the take away i can only imagine how good the restaurant is. if you find this review helpful please like it thank you It's been a while since I've been down here, I just called in and asked for a battered cod. I got it to take away, he wrapped it all up and I headed back to my car. Put some tunes on and slowly unwrapped my supper, and dove in. For a minute I wondered if I was hyped it too much last time and raised my expectations. Wrong... it was even better than last time or equally as good. Each bite left a lush after taste, like a hint of lemon vinegar.. juicy white flakes, crunchy and parts soft of batter, absolutely delicious. Just thought I'd share a quick update

Squires was recommended to us by at least 3 people in the week we have been in the UK so we had to go. It did not disappoint. The space is very modern and lively with people coming and going steadily all evening while we were there. A sign of excellent food and service. We spoke w the owner and he introduced his young daughter who is the 4th generation of Squires to be involved. We highly recommend Squires.

Superb fish and chips with massive portions. When the small fish doesn't fit in the container and is bigger than your hand span, you know you have a winner! Mini boxes are also highly recommended and good value too.

Haven't been here for a long time. It did not disappoint! Placed a large order for a group, ordered ahead on the click and collect service. Food was perfect and burning hot! Curry sauce absolutely divine, chips as I remember them! The shop was rammed on arrival, but our order was waiting for us! (Peak time over the Easter holidays is always a challenge, but the staff made short work of it!) hugely thankful and massive appreciation goes to the team! Care went into our order, making sure everything was included! Affordable prices especially compared to everything else in the area! Couldn't fault it!

Really delicious fish and chips. Generous portions and probably amongst the best we have had. Be prepared for a wait ( it is cooked fresh! ) and not much atmosphere - it is just a take away, but Squires is well worth a detour for!!

Came in Sunday 30th around 2:45 and ordered a few things.But was very surprised the chips we ordered were way below good to say the least.It looked like somebody scraped the fryer out with tiny bits of chips thrown in with larger chips and they looked like they had been over fried with no consistency with some being soft and some being hard! This is what we use to get from not very good chip shops.Last time we came in about 6 months ago they were great? Obviously you get better quality in your restaurant next door but this was very disappointing! And all the awards you get it was just unbelievable.

About a 20 minute wait but good food

Excellent food and really good portion sizes. Staff were very friendly despite it being a very busy Friday evening and they were running about 15 minutes late.

We have been coming here for over 30 years and the standards have remained excellent for every visit. We live 90 miles away, W-s-M, but make any excuse to have a day out in the area! The fish and chips are faultless, along with fantastic service. Always pleasing to be served by the top lady who i hope she won't mind me saying was there, a youngster then, for our early visits! All round excellence at sensible prices. Visit if you can!

Visited on 24th and it was absolutely superb, wasn’t too busy and the food was amazing. The fish and chips was delicious. I had fish and chips with curry sauce and 2 drinks and my partner had fish and chips with curry sauce and a drink and it came to £34!!! Very happy and will definitely be returning! Thank you!

The last few times that we have been on holiday in N Devon we have made a special trip to Braunton for fish and chips in Squires. Unfortunately, our most recent visit is likely to be our last. The cafe was less than a third full both upstairs and downstairs yet we were greeted tersely when we walked in and told to wait at the door. The staff member was unwelcoming when he found we had not booked - 2 people at 5pm on a February day, we did not realize we needed to book as have visited often in May and June and it have never been expected to book. Reluctantly we were given a table in the almost empty downstairs, and told we had to be out by 6.30pm. The fish, which has always been super in the past, was overcooked and slightly rubbery. In general the service was terse and unwelcoming from first entry to payment. The cafe became rather cold as subsequent people trying to enter were made to stand at the door, with the door open until staff felt able to approach them. Ironically, we overheard that one member of staff was visiting London the following day for an awards ceremony. That small businesses are busy and thriving is something that delights us all, but it is no excuse for unwelcoming and unfriendly service.

Having visited Squires for many years, bringing friends and family, I don't doubt for one minute that they are the best fish and chips (and chicken curry) and it's always a meal we look forward to booking, but the last few visits the service seems to be slipping. Go back to August when we booked a table for 9 of us. We arrived to be told we were being seated on two separate tables, not even near each other. Finally after getting someone else to help it was sorted, but this shouldn't have happened in the first place. If the system lets you book a table for 9, you expect to be able to all sit together. The next gripe over the last three visits..don't offer unlimited chips if you aren't going to fulfill the promise..on two occasions Cherry asked if we wanted more chips yet they never turned up at all (today's visit being one of these instances) Being seated upstairs in the corner it was difficult to flag a member of staff as they were clearly run off their feet..finally when I could get someone it was 20mins later and frustration had set in so we asked for the bill instead. We would have ordered desserts but because of this I just felt I'll go to the Coop and take a pudding home instead. Thirdly just a bit of feedback for staff when serving drinks. It's not seen as hygienic to hold the glass from above with fingers touching the parts of the glass where customers mouths will make contact. Glasses/cups/mugs should be held at the base when serving

An unplanned visit after a walk along the beach. Lovely restaurant, great staff, and as good a cod and chips as I’ve ever eaten. All for a very reasonable price. Halfway through the meal my wife turned to me unprompted and said this is the best fish and chips she’s ever had. I wish I didn’t live a five hour drive away so I could be a regular

The fish is cooked just right at Squires. Superb chips, not greasy. I love the curries. Meal boxes are superb value for kids and adults alike. Smoothies are spot on. Eco packaging and click and collect to avoid the queues. Plus Squires employ half the youth of the village, and are generally just a lovely family run business. Hooray for Squires!

Another great evening meal! The Squires Fish Curry is a must, really delicious 😋 My lovely partner decided for his birthday to try the 'Deliciously Tasty' 😋 poached salmon on a bed of prawns with thermidor sauce. Definitely lived up to it's name apparently! Already looking forward to our next visit!

Look, to say this place isn’t pleasant would be unfair. The food is perfectly nice and lovely staff. I just think it takes away from the romance of a classic fish and chip shop that serves its food in paper and makes you feel at home. My biggest issue with squire was the curry sauce. Under no circumstance should a chippy be serving curry sauce that veers away from the classic dip. Squires try’s to reinvent the wheel here and fails miserably. The scampi and tartare sauce was very nice however.

At £13.50 the great value authentic cod & chips with enclosed sides, tartare sauce & a drink was a wonderful treat and contrast to all the Christmas dinners had so far this season. Whenever we are in this area we always visit. Spotlessly clean,prompt attention, and the best fish and chips in North Devon by far. A big piece of cod covered in a thin crispy batter, lovely chips cut from real potatoes (yes you do get some small pieces because all potatoes aren't the same size) and peas, yummy. I would advise anyone to book and if you park in car park opposite then make sure that you pay.

We are regulars and get take away almost on a weekly basis using the pre order app. Food is consistently fresh and high quality. Recently I got there really late and there was one last cod left. They were about to package it for me when the chef with the American accent stopped it because it's been sitting there the whole day. I really appreciated the authenticity and care of this decision.

Always great at Squires. The fish is yummy. The chips were nice on this occasion, but not as amazing as they were in September when I had to come and get them three times in the one-week holiday we were there! Greedy us! I felt a little bit disappointed that they were not as delicious because I had been telling everyone that they were the best chips ever, but the fish was nice.

Great fish and chips here and the home made tartare sauce is delicious. Make sure you leave room for dessert as they have quite a selection to make your mouth water. Staff are so friendly and helpful. A wonderful dining experience.

Popped in for take away fish and chips on a short holiday with my elderly parents. Me and my father went to the take away side and it was very busy considering it was a Monday evening. The staff were very polite and welcoming considering the rush they obviously had . What I didn’t like was the way they were being spoken to by the ‘boss’ I’m assuming that’s who it was on the takeaway counter . They were doing a fantastic job and staying calm working hard in the rush but he kept shouting at them ! They’re doing a fantastic job leave them alone ! That said we thoroughly enjoyed our fish and chips when we got them home . Big kudos to the young members of staff that stayed composed the boss could take some tips from them I think 😁

It's just as good as always. I withheld one star for service because they ran out of chips on Tuesday. Only meant a ten minutes delay, though.

This is a great restaurant. From the superb fish and chips to the fruity salad, everything was top notch. The service is quick, efficient and attentive. When I managed to spill my wine, they cleared up with minimal fuss and even replaced the wine! And I love the art 😊👍

Squires is the jewel in the crown for Braunton, along with SQ opposite. Great food, great service in a really nice setting! Prices are lower than the current average i would say, which is great! Make sure to save room for a dessert!

I think we have been visiting this place for the past 12 years, whenever we are in the area. The food is always top notch and the service is always fantastic. When we first came here, it was on the more expensive side, but over the years, the price of fish and chips has gotten so high, Squires is now really reasonable. We had cod and chips with one side and a drink for £13.50. I would highly recommend.
