Used to visit Smokestack often prior to emigrating a decade ago. Recently returned on holiday and loved it

From starters to desserts the food was great, haggis bonbons were tasty with a lovely sauce, the steak & frites were really good cooked to perfection pink & the crumble & brownies were great, nice wines & great service

I visited many restaurants I can honestly say the chef at smokestack is the most handsome I've ever seen. Food was very good too!

4 of us (two adults, 2 kids) had selection of burgers as a pre-theatre. Was a busy Saturday night but servers were all relaxed and friendly. Food was delicious and generous. Would definitely return.

The Smokestack team helped me organise a dinner for a group of 15 people and it couldn't have gone better! They made sure we all sat together on one big table, as was our preference, and were friendly and flexible with all of our quirky group requests. The food was delicious, service was seamless and the team was very attentive throughout the evening despite the fact that the place was very busy. I would definitely recommend it. This cute little neighborhood restaurant has lovely staff and the food is delicious. The sweet potato fries are the best I've ever had, super crunchy from the first bite to the last. The chicken and avocado salad was almost as good; the chicken was a tiny bit overcooked but it's a minor quibble. Definitely worth a visit.

First time dining here, Ana was our waitress, she gave us an excellent service. The food was delicious. The staff was very wellcoming. Highly recommend.

There's always good jazzy tunes here! I'm glad they have gluten free beer and being served by Ana just brings up the good vibes for your experience at the Smokestack.

We enjoyed a very tasty meal here and the waitress was very helpful, attentive, and nice. The beef burgers were excellent and my salad was also very good. We were from out of town so this was a nice find!

Super friendly staff. Price was reasonable, and chef accommodating. Oh and the breakfast was fantastic! Veggie eggs Benedict for me and waffles for the rest of the family. They all loved them along with the smoothies and coffee.

I am the biggest fan of the chicken waffles on the brunch menu! The chicken is so crispy and tender and perfect waffles. And to make my experience better the staff are incredible! So warm and kind, this isn’t my first visit and won’t be my last! Highly recommend, you haven’t seen Edinburgh if you don’t have food here! (Can also vouch for the pretty epic steaks too)

It is wonderful to see this great local restaurant re-open. This has kept its laid back atmosphere and its generous and tasty food. If you are looking for friendly service for a lovely lunch or dinner this is a great place to come.

Visit to the smoke stack with my Daughter before attending the Lion King. Last visit was over 10 years ago and glad I returned- won’t leave it as long until our next visit! Food was delicious. Service friendly and not intrusive. Cocktails were lovely- only wish the 2 for £10 offer was available at the weekend too! No pre-theatre available at the weekend either - would be nice to have the choice though. Good location if you’re going to the theatre- only 5 minutes walk. Dined here recently using Itison voucher for meals and cocktails.We had eaten here before and, once again, the place had a nice buzz about it.All food and service from all staff was spot on.Slight misundertanding re the included drinks.The voucher states only 1 specific cocktail from the menu is excluded. However, we were advised on the night the voucher only gave us a choice from a separate (much smaller) cocktail menu. Thankfully, when we raised it, the staff acknowledged this had been a bit of a mistake on the voucher and allowed us to choose from the main menu so all good.Probably best this is made clear on future vouchers if that's their preference :)

We went to smoke stack on Friday night before going to lion king. Had great meal hubby and one of our friends both had lamb shank and both agreed best lamb they had had in a long time! Visited here for the first time with my mother and 6 year old daughter before seeing a show at The Playhouse which is just round the corner. Food was lovely as was the Prosecco. Daughter was kept busy colouring in the back of the kids menu with pencils provided to her as soon as we sat down. Desserts were lovely too. Will be back.

We booked a 5pm.com deal as we were going to the lion king at the playhouse. The food was of an extremely high standard our deal was £12 for three courses the staff were really friendly as well highly recommend this restaurant

My husband and I went to Smoke Stack for lunch and we were delighted with the delicious food on offer and also the staff Manuel and Olia were so helpful and friendly. There was a great ambience in the restaurant and had a very relaxed atmosphere.

After trialling plenty of others I can confirm this is hands down my favourite veggie breakfast in Edinburgh. My boyfriend and I came here originally as we were looking for . a place that does late brunch (win number 1) we both enjoyed our Full Scottish (his normal, mine veggie) that much, we come back whenever we can. The staff are also lovely, so it's always a pleasure.

We booked this prior to a show at the playhouse using Itison voucher deal. Service and food was great. Our order was mixed up but was promptly sorted. Without even complaining they reduced our bill. That’s what I call good customer service. If back in that area I would definitely revisit. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We were mooching around for somewhere to dine and came upon this place almost by accident. Neither of us were in a mood for steak but I had a lovely fish dish of haddock and my partner had salmon. It was all beautifully cooked, service was excellent and there was a good drinks selection. I was introduced to Innis & Gunn barrel aged ale. It might seem a little off the beaten track being a little bit away from Princes street and the shops but it's only a short walk and well worth it. Service was top-notch along with the food, and I heartily recommend.

As a family of 9 we booked to have dinner after being at the Playhouse. Two small people in the party had a good choice as did the adults . Different options of burgers , fish and chips and veggie .Prompt service for friendly staff. An easy option if at this end of town.

A cosy place and tasty brunch! We had the Scottish breakfast and the Avocado on Toast. Lovely sausages, haggis and Bishkek pudding and good quality coffee. Look forward to trying this place for dinner on our next trip.

Had lunch here with friend who is vegetarian. She was impressed with the vegetarian choices - a little out of the ordinary - and found them very tasty indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed my "meaty" choices too. Both food and wine were very reasonably priced for central Edinburgh and service was excellent. Although it was a Saturday and they were busy we did not feel any pressure to eat and go which is great since we don't meet up very often and we do like a leisurely catch up. Would definitely eat here again and happy to recommend to others who like casual dining in a modern cafe-style restaurant- we certainly do!

Went for dinner with some friends 5 of us in total. Service was great r out of 5 meals were good but mine wasn't. Now I have my steak " blue " some places can do this perfect and some not; so hence the not so great review. For the amount of money for the steak I wanted it blue it came out R going into M now for anyone who does have their steak blue then you would know the sadness I felt when I cut into it. (I'm not in the habbit of sending food back as a blue would then be rushed not cooked off properly around the steak and not brought up to room temperature so it would have been ice cold on the inside) so I forced myself to eat it. The other ladies their food was good perfect looked and tasted. I would come back but not to eat steak. So overall good for food just not blue steaks take that how you will. Service excellent and drinks spot on.

Dined here pre theatre when Tim Minchin was at the Edinburgh Playhouse. Friendly, efficient service. The ribs were delicious - moist - the meat dropped off the bone - tender - perfectly cooked. The chicken with haggis was good - the chicken a little dry. This would have been a 5 star had there been a choice of vegetables - totally inflexible. A pleasant experience. We'll likely be back.

I booked the Scottish Dinner, beer, wine and whisky evening for four aduilts travelling to Edinburgh for the very first time. This was our first evening and the best start to the trip that we coud have dreamed of. Richard was a great host, he explained everything and made us feel very welcome. The Smoke Stack is a wonderful restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh, it has a very warm and welcomimg atmosphere. The food was excellent, tasted good, looked good and served professionally. I totally agree with Richards statement that you will not leave hungry as with other sampling events. We met new friends form Australia, Mexico and the USA and although we had never met before, the event gave us the opportunity to talk, clone and network for over 3 hours. Thank you for this exceptional event - I have booked again, this time with 6 people.

Have kept returning to the Smokestack restaurant over the past few years and never been disappointed. A meal before a show at the Playhouse. We had Steak Frites and Ribs - both superb. Would recommend and will be back again soon. Thanks!!

I went to Smoke Stack expecting the name to suggest the type of food at the restaurant. I should really have read the menu beforehand... I was expecting smokey style ribs, bbq brisket etc based on the name. That was not the case.

Came here with my cousin and we were welcomed to have breakfst. The service was speedy and friendly. Had the vege breakfast and it was delicious! The atmosphere in the cafe is really quaint and all the staff were really obliging. A great find!

Great food and lovely friendly service! I had the gluten free waffles with syrup and buttermilk chicken. It was fabulous with a wonderful relaxed atmosphere perfect for a lazy morning brunch!

I really didn’t enjoy my experience here. I found the guy who served us really rude and unfriendly. Then I wanted a veggie brunch but I can’t eat eggs - however they state on the menu that their chef isn’t capable of making changes so leave what you don’t like or give to a friend - so wasteful. I can’t have egg so do not really feel the burden should be on me as a guest to have it on my plate or find someone to give it to. Milk choice was only regular or soya so again, the choice is minimal and not what I wanted. Really wouldn’t recommend.

I visit Scotland quite often and like to try new experiences when I am there, which are usually most satisfying, however on this occasion it was awful. I live in London and have traveled quite extensively to New York, Paris and many other major cities but I have never been told I can't change my food request and MUST have what is on the menu, otherwise the chef will get in a mess. My partner had an allergy towards egg so couldn't order what she really wanted so had to settle for something else, because you are not allowed to ask to leave off your plate but told "give it to your friend". This is so wasteful in a world where food waste is on the agenda. Our Italian waiter was very arrogant and would rather flirt in a very uncomfortable manner with the female customers than serve us. Please DO NOT waste your hard earned money on this awful place when there are plenty of other friendly establishments in Edinburgh.

The reviews (plus location) reason chose to eat here first night in Edinburgh & so glad we did. After my poor map reading found stack & welcomed by such friendly staff. Cute, rustic chic of a place with lovely food. Calamari with garlic mayo to start, so delicate & perfectly cooked followed by haggis, tatties & beautiful sauce. Not had haggis for years & this melted in your mouth, hats off to chef. So stuffed could not attempt pudding & had my eye on chai cheesecake too! Place full of regulars & tourists, great mix.
