Smoke & Salt in Lambeth

This is the second time I have been to S&S for the full testing menu with wine (which is fabulous value). The first time was excellent and the second time would have been just as good had it not been for one catastrophic dish. There is no way of serving pork shoulder that works unless you have cooked it long and slow so the fat can work its way through the meat and it becomes beautifully tender. Had this been done the dish would have been a triumph, but it was served as you would a chop. It was therefore difficult to cut, chewy and unhelpfully fatty. I get the idea, but there are some cuts of meat that need time with heat to work, and pork shoulder is absolutely one of them. If the meat had been cooked long and slow, then finished under the grill, it would have been perfect.

When I first saw the menu, I wasn't overwhelmed... but after speaking with the fabulous Remi, he adapted a few things due to allergies. I'm so happy that we went along. The food was absolutely delicious. The staff were wonderfully friendly and professional. I have not stopped talking about this restaurant and have recommended to all my friends in the area. This little restaurant is a gem and worth every penny. I will absolutely be returninng in the near future. Remi - you are a superstar, thank you for being so kind and patient with me.

We were really looking forward to eating here – got a call a few days before telling us only the tasting menu would be available – which is fine as we were going to choose it anyway – but it wouldn’t be for everyone…. Sadly, the whole experience was not what we had hoped for food or service wise (some rushed off w/out explaining the very complicated dish just set down.) The starters were OK, but then they brought two huge plates of parsnips - mulled blackberry, parsnip/marmite puree, sage – absurd giant servings of pretty average root veg as a course? Then Roasted Chalkstream Trout curried gribiche sauce, cucumber gel, nasturtium – it was a bit bland and normal – what you might do as an easy weekday meal at home. The main – venison wellington was really very gamey and a bit tough most gastro pubs will do a better job on pastry and meat – then served w/loads MORE root veg – as though the parsnips had not already sunk you. Finally the saddest part yet - desert - Eggnomelaka white chocolate, bourbon, dates, ginger biscuit - a mess of flavours - a sloppy mess - not one of the four of us ate more then a bite. Bought two bottles of very average wine – white Alvarinho – £15 at shop at £42 there - and a pretty average red for £50 – just shy of £400 for 4. I know they were trying but that was just not worth it – great food to be had in Tooting… not here necessarily.

Very interesting and different menu, full of great dished and complimenting flavours. Highly recommend the tasting menu which is a nice mix of what the kitchen offers. Service was nice however super slow and lacked flow - way too much time between the snacks, seconds and mains, we were there for +2.5 hours. I recommend this place but I would let them know how much time you have for dinner, if you don’t have all night.

An absolute must! What a fantastic tasting menu for £30, with excellent service in great surroundings. Highly recommended!

We decided to celebrate my husband’s birthday at Smoke and Salt and had a fabulous meal. The service was friendly and informative and we started with some delicious cocktails. We picked the tasting menu and the food was amazing. The layering of the flavours was very creative and we enjoyed the combination of tastes. The plate sizes did not appear to be large but they kept on coming and all of us were more than happy with the quantity of food when we finished our meal. We will definitely be going back to sample another tasting menu.

I was very excited to go here, the menu read really well, the thought of Michelin star in tooting was very exciting. We had the taster menu at £50 per person! I did not love the food I was disappointed, there was lots of sprinkled bits and bobs on everything, I understand the nouveau cuisine style, but for me, it was just a bit too much. Unfortunately I won’t be going back only one course (aubergine) really blew me away. Everything else was a bit to try hard in my humble opinion.

This restaurant is amazing and definitely will be returning. Every dish was so delicious and the open kitchen adds really nice character. Only recommendation would be to turn down the lights a little in the evening! Cannot wait to return with friends and family.

I came here for supper on Thursday with two friends. It was a perfect evening from start to finish, the staff are really attentive and knowledgable about the food and the atmosphere is very welcoming. We shared the 35pp six plate option, every dish was delicious and different. The poached chicken and chocolate mousse were real highlights. The portions are also generous, so you won’t leave feeling hungry, it very good value for money too. I’m already looking forward to my next visit and trying the other dishes on the menu.

Wow! This restaurant is an absolute gem. The fresh, tasty, thoughtful food is of excellent quality and the tastiest meal I’ve eaten in a very long time. The menu is not vast but all options are covered and all with the smoke theme. I found myself dreaming about the courgettes with baba ganoush yesterday and the apricots with cream are to die for. I’ll definitely be returning. Great service also - we were attended to by Johnny who was fantastic.

What a wonderful restaurant - my wife and I had the 6 course sharing meal with wine pairing! What a truly magnificent culinary experience! This restaurant must be destined for a Michelin star before long.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening last night at Smoke and Salt, Tooting. We had popped out on a Saturday evening with no real plans of where to go and found ourselves wandering in to Smoke and Salt. We were greeted by a friendly waitress who promptly found a table for us despite the restaurant being quite busy. She talked us through the menu and explained the six course tasting menu and the accompanying wine pairing. We chose the tasting menu and my wife chose the wine pairing, whilst I stayed with the continuously refilled sparkling water. We enjoyed all the dishes on the tasting menu but the stars of the show were the courgette dish with a Scotch Bonnet dressing and the chicken dish. We finished off with a very delicious strawberry and chocolate desert, which my wife refused to share, so we had to order another! (for me). Finally we were surprised with a fabulous plate of hand crafted confections. I have to add that the service throughout was immaculate and we enjoyed the eclectic music selection. Sadly the music gets swallowed up by the accoustics of the room as the restaurant gets busier - difficult to fix!

Had the tasting menu. Good variety of dishes with interesting flavour combinations. All the dishes were absolutely delicious but we especially enjoyed the quail legs with pickled pear. Staff were very helpful and they were able to cater very well for gluten free. All dishes were easily adapted and in the one instance that was difficult to do they provided an alternative to the member of our party. It's not a cheap meal out but is terrific value for the quality of the food. We did not feel rushed at all and were given plenty of time to enjoy a drink after we finished.

Food is so good! The lamb was the best we’ve had in a while. Beef heart is still one of my favourites. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. We were also 40 minutes late because of tube issues but they were very accommodating.

We had a really good meal. Particularly enjoyed the aubergine and mussel pasta which I wouldn’t have usually picked but was in fact a highlight, as was the cauliflower salad and the potatoes. Service was excellent. Our waitress was really professional, helpful and friendly.

Good food but the noise in the back room is too much - the music is a touch too loud and the acoustics are wrong with the kitchen and washing up and dish stacking. I am used to noise and got a headache.
