We had 6x rooms booked for wedding including the Ash suite paid extra for family and guests fur a wedding the Ash suite there was no hot water for bath and patio doors blowing open and rattling all night. There where still gift left in cupboard from 60th party. We booked 2x dressing gowns and slippers and put on our bill but where not allowed to take them.rang reception said no hot water and attitwas couldn't care less re water or patio doors they also explained not to take dressing gowns as did not belong to hotel.. Reception staff very cold and uncaring it seen they have had your money and not bothered we where a small party for wedding but should be treated as well as a 200 party not looked down on like something they stood in .the ceremony at the gretna Anville was amazing couldn't fault it fool if laughter and fun but also very professional by all concerned even the piper was outstanding the meal was lovely but very very slow booked for2.30 started gone 3 two course took 2houes ..then had to chase staff for clearing tables as everyone was getting bored by the time we got to coffee and shortbread which was extra there was only 6 at the table

We had dinner here the night before we were married. ‘Artisan bread with oils’ came as a shared starter. A massive plate of huge chunks of bread which had been shoved in the oven to warm I presume, but was toasted, hard and dried up. We asked for fresh bread which was not toasted and hard. Same bread came back, pretty stale and crumbly, we didn’t eat it. The oil was horrible and the balsamic vinegar in the oil was the thick balsamic glaze which you squirt on food! My main of roasted beetroots salad would have been ok if it hadn’t been absolutely soaked in horrible olive oil, there was no other dressing other than a squirt of the balsamic glaze again. My partners chicken cesar salad was spoilt by deep fried croutons which tasted of cheap oil and had a horrible smell. We shared chips which I have to say were the worst I’ve ever tasted. We left these, they had a horrible texture like instant potato and stank of the disgusting frying oil. All I can say is that I’m so glad we didn’t choose to have our wedding meal there! The restaurant area is really tired looking too, dirty seats with food stains all over them.

What an amazing experience. My daughter was married at Gretna and organised it all through this wonderful hotel. The reception was held here also. The food was fabulous, the staff had " nothing is too much trouble" attitude, making the whole experience extra special. My mother couldn't attend through illness and really wanted to try the fishcakes, they went out of their way to arrange one to take home for her ❤️ . Really excellent service. The gentleman who organised the occasion during the day made us all feel relaxed and happy. Saying this all the staff are brilliant I can't pick one member above another. The wedding was just as my daughter wanted all went smoothly without hiccup. The cake, photos everything! Well done the Smiths! I can highly recommend getting married and having everything done at this hotel ( actually married across the road) dive star treatment.

We arrived early due to journey time so we went to see if we could check in early, we were told we could not check in early (which we did not expect) but wanted to leave our luggage for later on so that we could go and have a look around the local areas, we were told that they could not do this due to not having any storage area. Check in time finally arrived and 3 of the party went to check in and were told that they had to pay £100 gold fee against your room for damages and as the bar do not accept cash or card payments after 11pm. We were not told of this and neither were the bride and groom. On going to our room it was noted that the key for my elderly grandfather did not work after numerous attempts of going up and down the stairs, (lift was broken and in the process of being fixed) On entering our rooms they were the same near enough. After the rest of the party checked in it was brought to light that they did not even pay a fraction of the price that we paid on checking in. That evening came when we went to one of the parties room and it was noted that the air conditioning was not actually working (digital) this was reported the following morning early,, but after numerous attempts to then be told it will be fixed, but for now we can offer you some more fans (Already had 2) that evening they still had not received any information about the air con so we went to reception to ask to be told it will not be fixed until Tuesday, at which point the room was 26 degrees. Another fan was offered but this was declined. They are not ones to make a fuss but this was not acceptable as all other rooms had air conditioning apart from there’s. Nothing was done to reimburse having to stay in a boiling hot room. - Breakfast was lovely, catering for allergies which is cooked fresh, thank you chefs. - Housekeeping lovely and clean but please pay attention to bathroom corners. - Bar staff, thank you for your prompt service during our stay. - Receptionist please use your manners (don’t apply to all) - it’s not the customers fault if things don’t work, down to Maintenance.

Nice … BUT ….. The menu is nice but in my view a little limited, not cheap…. The steak was however perfect, but at this price point the chips being extra was a surprise and they were not even made from fresh potatoes…. 99% sure they came from the freezer…. Also the ice cream for desert had chunks of ice in it, often a sign of a lower quality . So nice food but given the expected standard…. Didn’t impress ….

Disappointing experience. We visited the hotel restaurant and as non-residents, we were restricted to eat in the conservatory area which consists of comfy chairs and low tables- not the best dining experience. I ordered the pasta which was not cooked well and my partner had the buttermilk chicken burger which he liked. The drinks took forever to arrive, we were already halfway through our meal before they were served. The environment was really nice so it was a shame that our experience was not more positive. It wasn’t a particularly busy night

We stayed here 21st of September, we had a wedding package for six people. We upgraded our room to the Ash Suite and I would definitely recommend doing this as it was a lovely spacious room with a spacious balcony and gave myself and my two witnesses plenty of room to get ready. The room had a dining table and chairs, sofas and a super king size room. The double rooms we booked for our guests were clean, but the lighting was a full soft yellow so we would’ve struggled to get ready on those rooms. The food in the restaurant was lovely and we had a fabulous wedding meal which again upgraded, and for the extra it was worth it. We were served in the bar by Thomas and Ryan on both nights and they were both brilliant and provided a lovely service that added to our experience.

We got married at Gretna Green 10yrs ago and stayed at the Smiths hotel and it was great (although the room was a bit dark and lighting too poor to apply wedding makeup) , so we booked to come back and stay while we renewed our vows. This time was a bit disappointing, nothing had been refurbed; the room was practically identical in decor to the one we’d stayed in 10yrs ago! The lighting was just as poor and the a/c wasn’t working. It was stifling trying to blow dry your hair in a room that has a tiny window that only opens 4”😞 Gemma on reception was lovely and made our stay really as she was very helpful and professional as was the other lady on reception but the rest of the staff acted like they didn’t want to be there . The hotel is very tired and shabby . The breakfast was lukewarm and I waited AGES for someone to fill up the buffet with tomatoes and beans … ! The bar prices were extortionate- £12 for a tiny bottle of Prosecco … come on … So although we had a lovely time as we dressed up and took the time to enjoy ourselves and met some lovely people that were staying there too, I dont think we’ll go back . Sad really as they are the nearest hotel to the old blacksmiths and are in a prime spot. I appreciate that Covid must have made things tricky but personally I would have preferred to have paid a bit extra for a room/hotel that wasn’t so worn out

Stayed at the Smiths hotel for my brothers wedding. Arrived thinking the place would be tacky because of what it’s there for as a runaway hotel to accommodate for the fleeing wedding couples. The hotel was fantastic, very trendy inside. The staff couldn’t do more for you they were exceptional & extremely friendly & attentive. The bedrooms were superb, very spacious & comfortable, except the mattresses, this is the only downfall to the hotel are the beds they are terrible, too soft & nothing there to support your body whilst laying on them. The restaurant food is superb, presentation is appealing to the eye. The restaurant staff definitely need praising because they were lovely & very good at their jobs. Very pleasant breakfast experience having more than enough on offering & again served by very friendly staff to say they are serving the rabble first thing in the morning. Our whole experience, is that this hotel cannot do enough for you to make sure your stay is a good one. Even if you weren’t getting married this is definitely a hotel to be staying at if your on the borders of Scotland. First class & top notch experience, highly recommended

We had a great experience at Smiths for our Wedding dinner, we had to pre order, but they got it all correct and the servings were very generous. My steak was delicious, we had two fussy eaters with us and they ate more than the other 6 people, so it must have been good! Large selection of wine too, so great evening, and friendly staff. The restaurant itself has lovely decor.

My husband and I got married at the blacksmith shop this week and stayed at this hotel with our wedding guests. We would never recommend this place to anyone looking to get married. We have come away disgusted with the way we was treated on our wedding day by certain staff members. The rudest person of them all was a lady called Alice who worked in the restaurant. She made me cry on my own wedding day with how she kept trying to start arguments from the moment we arrived for our wedding meal. She kept prodding us with sarcastic remarks all the time & was constantly watching us to try and make an issue over literally anything. She was absolutely vile with the way she thought she could talk to us. The woman even got a tape measure out on our wedding day for social distancing on tables (long story short: mine and the grooms table was so far away from our guests we had to shout to the tables - it was a joke they went past the 2M ruling!!! So we moved our table slightly closer to our guests so we could actually hear them and she then had the cheek to get a tape measure out - UNBELIEVABLE. This is not how to treat guests especially on their wedding day!! There is a way to speak to people and it certainly wasn’t this!!) We then complained about her to another member of staff and it was a pack mentality in this hotel and she was allowed to talk to people however she wanted. I just wanted to add that other wedding parties in the restaurant was getting away with singing, standing up and mingling, music on their phone speakers but nope... this woman had it in for us all night. I think she took good pleasure out of getting an argument out of myself and my guests. Will never be coming back here. Just so grateful we had lovely friends and family there who made the day lovely for us otherwise this would of been a hell hole.

Couldn’t get into Gretna inn for lunch & barmaid suggested we try smiths. Rather pricey but quite swanky. Service slow although very quiet. Dining room very quiet but we were served in the lounge to eat off coffee table. Rather awkward & uncomfortable. The food however was a treat. The burger & the fish @ chips offered large portions (way to many chips). Fish was beautifully cooked & fresh. Only issue was that both meals came pre salted. If we had been pre warned I could have asked for an unsalted meal

We were staying in Gretna Green to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary, having married at Gretna on the 6th October 1994. We were staying in the Dunsmoor Cottages (No. 5) next door to the hotel and restaurant. After a long drive north from our home in Salisbury we chose to have dinner at Smiths restaurant. We both opted for a very tasty curry dish and it was delicious and the staff were brilliant. The only downside was some of the prices on the menu. The first thing I heard as I sat down was a comment from someone at another table saying : “Have you seen these prices?” I must admit my wife and I did both fancy a steak but at £30 each, we agreed that was too much but the curry was very good.

We booked for Sunday lunch and found the hotel restaurant surprisingly quiet with only 3 other tables used during our 2 hour stay. The menu is on the expensive side at 18 pounds for the main course and 3 pounds extra for each starter and/or dessert. Between us we tried the roast beef, roast lamb and chicken with haggis. All were excellent and accompanied by a wide range of lots of quality vegetables and tasty rich gravy. The bread and butter pudding was a let down being without any fruit and rather stogy but the Eaton mess sundaes please all. Service was rather mixed and not very attentive. We waited over 10 minutes for our plates to be cleared while the two staff folded dozens of napkins and polished glasses only a few yards away.

When we arrived at the venue unsure of where to go we were left standing in recepetion for 15 minutes whilst staff just stared and walked past, i even said hello to a member of staff to be ignored. Upon this, eventually when we were seated after finding our own way around this, we were greeted by an extremely rude member of staff which i think her name was EMMA. We waited a further 20 mins to receive our drinks order, even though it was'nt busy, as it was a Wednesday night. I complained about the wait and the waitress seemed unhappy about this which made us feel uncomfortable. Food was nice but myself, my auntie and niece all got lasangne which was still hard when we got it, i mentioned about this when the food was being cleared from the table and the waitress made it very obvious she was talking about us to other members of staff. We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights recently to attend a wedding in the area! Coming from Ireland on the first day, we were very tired and just wanted to get settled in our rooms. The staff at the front desk were lovely and gave us our cards without delay. However, upon arriving in our room, the smell of mold/damp towels was overwhelming! Putting it down to stale air we continued unpacking and went to the bathroom only to find hair in the bath! Annoyed I called down to reception to ask for a room change, doubting the hygiene after the discovery only to be told they would check for a room and send housekeeping up. (No apology) Housekeeping arrived with an electronic box which emitted incense smoke and a quick wipe down of the bath!! Promising to be checked on in the morning, we were left with the mixed smell of incense and damp. Never checked on in the morning and never mentioned again. Breakfast was extremely good and everything else was standard, however plug sockets were rare to find and lifts were dodgy and out of order often! Leaving, we were not asked about our stay and an apology was not mentioned. Really disappointed.

We stayed at Smiths for two nights attending a friends wedding. On arrival checkin was easy and quick. I was told the money for my room would not be taken out of my account until check out this wasn't true the full amount was taken. Room was nice with plenty of room my only niggle is the main road is quite close to the hotel our room was quite noisy. Bathroom was a little dated and could have been cleaner, plus there was a not very nice smell in the bathroom I wasn't sure if it was the shower curtain or smell from the toilet! Evening meal was ok, drinks very expensive. Breakfast was very good.

Arrived early at this hotel for a meal with friends , so decided to have a drink one pint and 2 soft drinks - I did not get much change from a 10er so be aware. I personally never seen any prices displayed so maybe licensing should pay a visit. Once you have had a few drinks you would be wanting to use the facilities #toilets. Well good luck if you can find them. No signage what so ever. So you will see people walking aimlessly around hunting. Anyway the food was very good but has a price attached to it. I if you are in a budget forget it. The only place I have been that all the deserts are priced exactly the same £6. I personally would come back here for a meal, staff were very helpful and polite. Just to say that you don't get much chicken with your fajitas dish or curry dish. so give that one a miss. Burger was spot on. Seen someone getting a fish and chips wish I had ordered that. Looked very good. PS: free wifi.

Went to the restaurant with family the night before a wedding and had the teatime menu. Was lovely and for the set menu there was something for everyone. 3 courses for £16 was a bargain when you see the bar prices. Drinks were expensive too but for a one off before a family wedding it was tolerable.

We booked Smith's Hotel to celebrate our wedding this month as part of a package as it was just across from the Old Blacksmith's Shop. We stayed for two nights with another 13 guests staying too.

We had a meal here during a stop over in Gretna, recommended by the B&B; where we stayed. Food and service was ok, nothing special. Busy with weddings as expected, and the prices for food and drink took advantage of this. Gretna is a strange place, not a lot to see or do if your not involved in a wedding.

Good food but a bit expensive, staff were all really kind and helpful. Nice atmosphere because it was full of people who had got married in Gretna that day. New husband was not too sure about the trolley that came round selling perfume and cigars, he found that a bit random . Overall though a great experience.

Had post wedding meal in lounge bar of Smiths Hotel. Food was delicious. Had greek stew. But bit on something hard only to find it was a piece of broken crockery. Cut my gum. Quite painful. Not want you want a few hours after your wedding. Told the waitress when she came to collect our plates. She said "oh I will go tell them in the kitchen". Took the broken chunk of crockery with her. Then not another word was said. No one came to talk to us. She never came back with any apology. However she did keep returning to ask did we want more food, more drinks, over and over again. After my partner finished his drink we left. I wrote a complaint about this and left it with reception. Not a word was said. Bit shoddy really !!

I booked a table around 6 weeks ago. I phoned to confirm as i always do. We arrived at smiths and it looked very nice. Lovely furnishings etc. From there on in was a disaster. We headed down to wait to be seated and there were no friendly welcoming smiles from the staff. Finally a man in a suit approached us and i told him i had a table booked and to my shock he couldnt find my booking. No apology. In fact it was like he didnt believe me. I felt that he just wanted us to disappear and if i didnt keep pushng and assuring him id booked he wouldnt have come up with a solution. I told him there was no way i was travelling all the way there to be told i dont have a booking. He offered me another table but it wasnt in the area we had booked. It was in a noisy part and there were noisy families and children crawling around the floor. Hardly what we expected. We ordered our food and another drink for me. Tue drink took 10 minutes to arrive. I nearly did self service as i could see it sitting on the bar. The food arrived. It was ok but not great. My husbands steak wasn cooked to the way he wanted it. I chose creme brulee for pudding. Cant go wrong with that...it appears you can. One mouthful and i couldnt eat any more. It was awful!! My husband had the cheese board and the cheddar was like rubber so he didnt eat that either! We had to hang around for a drink to wait for our taxi. Yet again it was like i waa invisible. Took 10 mins to get served. All in all totally awful place and we wont be back!!

Great looking place, restaurant is high quality and well worth a visit...... But, this place needs a clean! My room (1) has someone else's coffee splattered on the radiator, dust on the wooden wall panels to write a name in, and a shabby bathroom. Couple this with a poor quality shower and dirty lift you're getting the picture. Bedroom standard is average, think Travelodge and why did you put a 6' guy in a disability room with low basin & bath when the hotel is half empty ?

Today we visited and as it was a Sunday i decided on a chicken dinner, big mistake.Where do i start?Chicken was very dry and not hot, roast potatoes were small and hard, carrots were raw, parsnips were rock hard and had a bitter taste.Mash was tasteless and cauliflower cheese had a vague taste of cheese. The peas and yorkshire were ok but the latter was very small. My gravy was lukewarm so they kindly heated it till it was more like molten lava!I had to ask for napkins as apparently us customers cannot be trusted to use the dispensers!I wouldn't advise anyone to eat here, had an upset stomach all afternoon.

I have reviewed this Restaurant as part of the Galloway Arms Hotel, so this will hopefully clarify the earlier reviews. We have been on a number of occasions since the last review and we have not been disappointed with the food at the Nine Mile Bar & Bistro within The Galloway Arms Hotel. On this visit we chose two times Two Course Specials priced at £14.50 each. The Starters were battered Chicken Goujons, which was quite a large portion and Tempura coated Prawns. Both dishes were very good and the Chicken alone would have been enough for my Wife as a main course. (Small Eater). My Wife had the Beef Stroganoff and I had the Salmon in Dill sauce for the main courses. Normally, we tend to have just the main courses and therefore we had to take home the chips, which were provided along with the Stroganoff half & half. A pint of Moretti is £3.50 and a large Chardonnay is £5.00 and the total bill without tip came to £37.50. The surroundings in the Hotel's main bar is simple, but cozy. A 10 minute drive from Dumfries gets you to this Hotel and I think that it is worth this very small effort.More

Food was cold and disgusting. Steak burger was served in a roll which looked like something that would be served in a chippy. Waitress has clearly not been trained properly at all as her hospitality skills were dragging through the dirt.
