Smarts Fish & Chips in West Oxfordshire

Cold, over cooked chips, including a long black hair which I assume was from the miserable woman who served me. Very disappointing.

Chip portions not consistent, seem to get fewer and fewer. Asked for battered sausage and it came without batter, second time in a row. Lost our custom.

Ordered a battered sausage and chips. Absolutely disgusting food! Battered sausage was insipid looking, batter was soggy and greasy. The lady serving wasn’t very friendly either

Lovely takeaway, had a kebab whilst I was waiting for takeaway fish and chips with curry sauce - friendly staff, delicious food.

This place used to deliver delicious fish and chips but has gone dramatically down hill, the portions have shrivelled as the price has dramatically grown. The ‘Large Fish’ was a crumbled greasy pile of batter with a tiny slither of crispy inedible fish inside for £12. I phoned to complain and was met by a loud man not listening and talking over me, disputing that there was any problem at all. He told me that he may ‘stop doing GF altogether!’, which had nothing to do with anything I was trying to resolve. I asked for his number to send images, which he gave me, when he saw the image he agreed it wasn’t great and made excuses, but offered to deliver another fish which I accepted. The fish never arrived. No refund. Nothing. Appalling and shockingly dishonourable behaviour. When we first moved to the area we were Smarts Fish and Chips regular customers and have been treated appallingly. Needless to say, we will be ordering from ‘Off the Hook’ in Long Hanborough in future, they supply delicious fish and chips, a fairly sized portion for a reasonable price. I advise you do the same.

What an absolute shambles our takeaway meal was! Partner ordered food and the chips were missing! Two payments taken due to missing chips! £3.50 for a small portion of chips - daylight robbery! Partner ordered a plain egg burger (e.g. burger bun, burger and egg) which he told the lady behind the counter. He got home to find cheese in the egg burger - this was for someone who is allergic to cheese and could of ended up in hospital! Great listening skills and customer service NOT! He went back and was given a fresh order but when we opened the wrapping paper at home, there was only a burger bun and burger, NO EGG! The sausage ordered was also dry and tasteless and the chip - yuck! What use to be the best chip shop in Witney is now the worst!!! Need I say anymore - NO!!!

£32 today for 1 large & 1small fish and chips and 2 coffees. The coffee was great. The fish and chips were dry,tasteless and vastly overcooked,been under the lights all day I reckon. Lady asked how it was,told her it had been out too long to serve. she apologised with such little conviction,as if this is what she is used to hearing.

Absolutely awful! I had always been under the impression this was one of the best in town. We had asked for a large fish and chips, we did not get it but what was awful was the flat, dried over cooked fish and dry chips which both tasted old possibly from the day before! I will never buy from there again!

I've been using this place for fish and chips for years and up to now have been happy. Unfortunately, a large portion of chips is now the size of the old standard portion. The same is true for fish sizes. That might be acceptable if the prices reflected the change but they don't. Prices have also gone up, Come on guys, you can't have it both ways........charging more for smaller portions aint on. I think I'll be going elsewhere in future.

Over all the food was tasteless and rather expensive. More quantity than quality. Took a rather long time to cook 2 haddock

Popped in for fish & chips. Looked ok when wrapping but 6 minutes later when home I realised that both the fish and chips were not only old but very cold. They were obviously cooked earlier. They were disgusting. I will never go there again. They must have known what they were doing which makes it even worse. Stay away

Freshly fried haddock and chips with mushy peas was very tasty. The jumbo breakfast was impressive and well cooked. The service is always attentive and friendly; and the sitting-in area is unpretentious but clean and quiet. Highly recommended.

Thought this chippy may be related to the chippy in Thame of the same name which is hands down the best, but I don’t think so. Really friendly service and fish was freshly cooked to perfection. However I did find the batter quite dense and claggy and it contained herbs which slightly overpowered the fish.

Brilliant experience ordering gluten free, it's the only chip shop I have found that caters for gf locally. The curry sauce was bit iffy I wouldn't get that again but chips , fish and battered sausage were very nice! The staff had a good understanding and clearly labelled everything and nothing was too much bother, we had to wait a little longer but don't mind that as long as its being done safely . Thank you !

Brilliant service and outstanding Gluten free and normal fish and chips The shop is about 20 miles from us and we would definitely travel to get the quality they provide

I had vegan vish and chips here with my family and the owner was amazing ! He went out of his way to make sure everything was cooked in fresh oil for me as I am a strict vegan … we all loved our vish and chips ..so yummy 😋 I can’t wait to go back !!

2 small chips, large cod, and small sausage for £14.40, mid week birthday week treat. Lovely tasting batter, chips great. I would recommend it as being Smart to go here to get something traditionally British to eat. Thumbs up.

Have been to this chip shop restaurant many times haven’t been since 2020 because of lockdowns. Always a great place to eat and reasonably priced . Went today 26/5/2021 and how it has changed . Very very expensive and the food is nothing to write home about. Service very slow. Cans of drinks very expensive. I would not recommend this place no more they are trying to recoup money from the customers and not passing the lower rate of vat on.if this carries on they will not survive and deserve to go under . Also a limited menu. I used to have a mixed grill for Approx £7.50. Now £15.95 ridiculous price rises fish and chips approx £10.00. You could go to a good pub restaurant for a lot less. Total rip off
