I came across Slaters when looking at a map of the area. I've never been to this part of Nelson before, but having looked at their Facebook page and seeing their ice creams my mind was easily made up. We went just after 1pm on a Wednesday afternoon and had a regular vanilla ice cream cone and a large cookies and cream and battenburg ice cream cone (2 flavours on one cone). The flavours were amazing and we would definitely return to try more.

We have been fans of Slaters ice cream for more years than I care to recall. The standard and taste has never varied. I'm not really a lover of ice-cream, or at least of the plethora of commercial brands but if we see a shop advertising Slaters ice cream we will go in to buy some and if we happen to be in Nelson we will always call in the parlour for a cornet or a wafer. We had a serendipity moment the other month when we saw the Slaters van stopped in a local village and serving customers. It was an incredible "Would you believe it?" moment. It had been an unseasonable warm afternoon and, as I drove along, I had been thinking "I could just eat a Slaters ice-cream" and there was the van! I stopped the car and learnt that it comes round that village at roughly the same time on Sundays. I bought a double cornet with a chocolate flake and a couple of family size tubs to take home - which we are still enjoying. What's not to love about that?

I have eaten Slater's ice cream since being a little girl in the 1950s. Slater's started just after WW2 and to this day still make their ice-cream to the original recipe in their works on Cross Street Nelson, where their shop is. A lot of Nelsoners think it is the best ice cream in the world, I suppose we are biased but I have never tasted any better. When I was a child they only made vanilla ice cream but now this family business sells a selection of traditional flavours. Ice cream and cream with a flake and strawberry sauce was always a firm favourite when indulging in the like was not considered unhealthy. As well as selling a wide range of cones and wafers take away tubs from small up to family size ones are sold. Slaters also make their own fudge and chocolate brownies

My husband & I have been visiting Slater's on a regular basis for at least 45 years. When we first went there there was a cafe behind the ice cream area. It was always full on Saturdays, we & lots of other people, used to enjoy pie & peas followed by a chocolate nut sundae. We talk about it often, it was a happy memory. The cafe has long since closed but nowadays, the ice cream is just as delicious as it was in those days! You can still have a chocolate nut sundae to eat in or take away. Mmmm! There are other delicious flavours too. Oh I must mention the fudge which is made by Slater's too, that also is a real treat.

I know that many ice cream manufacturers claim to make the best ice cream in the world, but I do honestly believe that Slaters ice cream could beat them all. It's so rich & creamy & not watery like a lot of them. Slaters was well known in Nelson when I was a small girl, there was a cafe there, we used to go every Saturday lunchtime for pie & peas & a chocolate nut sundae. Alas times have changed & the cafe is no longer there, Slaters changed hands , but they use the same recipe to make the ice cream. The chocolate nut sundaes are to die for! There are a few small tables if you fancy eating in. The fudge is also good!

Awesome place, don't walk past it, go in! (If you're a day tripper put it on as a must visit). Only popped in for a quick beer with a mate. It is wonderfully homely and quirky at the same time. Masses of music memorabilia from the 1960s onwards, I relived my life from 6yrs to well many more years in there! Super friendly staff, even showed me the 'gig' cellar. Dog friendly too. Will definitely be going back!
