It is a shame the food and service has gone downhill and I won't be returning. Recommendation to the owner/staff - don't bother asking how the food was both during and at the end of the meal if you're not going to do anything to rectify the issues that are raised. The owner was really defensive and refused to take any accountability. Really disappointing as used to like this place but they were given multiple opportunities to fix the issues with the meals and were very dismissive and unprofessional at each.

Worse meal out I’ve ever had. Two staff on the bar great folk and very helpful. Feel sorry for them as one of the owners was extremely rude to us and very sarcastic and cocky. Very poor meal chips underdone steak extremely well done when requested for rare. Very poor quality meat very chewy fat and grissly and when mentioned to the owner he wasn’t helpful at all. We paid the bill which was extremely over priced and left. On our exit the owner with a group of his friends said under his breath “don’t come back” and giggled. Were locals in the village and wa respectful to them all that night. Very disappointed and won’t be returning or recommending

We called up, as liked the menu, and asked if they minded if we stayed in our VW Camper in the car park overnight. They were very obliging, we went in for dinner, had a couple of beers and then the most amazing food. The place was very quiet for a Thursday (26th Sept), and I am unsure how as the food was something else 🤤 As it was quiet, we managed to have a great chat with Olivia front of house and Adam the chef (I hope I have remembered your name right 😬) They were so attentive, and it was really nice to hear people have so much passion in what they do 💙 It was a beautiful stay, with amazing food and company, cheers for welcoming us and Billy 🐶🐾 guys, if we are ever in the area again we will definitely be back, keep up the good work xx

Disappointing and handled badly Went with a friend for lunch,. We both ordered fish and chips and despite the place being almost empty *which should have rung alarm bells) we had to wait almost an hour for the meals. The chips were rock hard and had either been over cooked or re heated and the batter had been over cooked and in place too hard to eat. When this was raised with the waitress there was no response. I've since spoken with an employee of the Bay Horse who blamed me for not asking for a refund at the point of paying. Unbelievable Good management would try and patch things up .

Been here twice now ..... 1st visit for 3 sandwiches for lunch and all 3 were very average at very high prices. My egg mayo sandwich had so little egg on it didn't even corner the bread. 2nd visit had their steak burger at a cost of £18 but had to pay £1.50 for cheese and £1.50 for bacon on it.... Buger was absolutely tasteless and the bacon I received for £1.59 was a shriveled up burnt piece of bacon 1 slice. Absolutely disgusting prices for very average tasteless food. Certainly don't recommend ..... Below link is a photo of the bacon that I was charged £1.50 for.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/4q6euuSgfMTNk3uN8 UPDATE to your reply of not serving egg mayo sandwiches..... I have linked a picture to your menu clearly available online to an egg mayonnaise sandwich at the price of £8... I cannot stand it when businesses lie as well as serve crap . Honesty is key when running business. WHY say you don't serve egg mayo sandwiches? https://photos.app.goo.gl/AynvqtDWk3KNGvhA7

We ordered our drinks and perused the menu. Drinks came very quickly and we're very nice too. We ordered our food and to be honest surprised it took so long to arrive (around 40 mins) seeing as we were only the second table to order. The food however was excellent and very very taste. However, that night and following morning 2 of the party, who had prawns to start, had a stomach upset (d&v). We went for a walk on the Pendle trail and booked The Bay Horse as it was nearby. The restaurant was fairly quiet when we arrived (3pm) so we were unsure what to expect. The meal was excellent and the staff extremely courteous and attentive. I went for the Sunday roast beef and it was cooked to perfection (just a little pink, which is just how I like it). Lots of accompaniments - mash, roast spuds, cauliflower cheese, carrot, parsnip, mange tout & green beans and a huge yorkshire pud and lots of gravy. My husband had the fish & chips - batter was cooked to perfection. Our daughter choose the sirloin steak burger and fries. Unfortunately, it was overcooked and in hindsight we should perhaps have asked for it medium. Tip - Maybe the staff could ask customers how they would like their steak burger cooked. We like ours medium (pink) but that isnt necessarily the same for everyone. We will definitely return when in the area.

Well worth making the effort to have a meal here. Welcoming staff got us swiftly seated and looking at the menu. We decided on Chicken Supreme which was delicious, Fish, chips and mushy peas (not my daughters usual choice - but there was nothing left at the end!), and the Duck breast, which was perfectly pink. We shared 3 desserts, and so glad we did! The Pear crumble was fresh and sweet with not a teacebof sogginess. The Chocolate Amaretto pot was rich and dense but nicely set off by the dark cherries on top, and the Sticky Toffee pudding had just the right amount of burnt caramel sharpness to cut through the richness of the pudding. We were served throughout by the friendly, polite and knowledgeable Olivia who ensured we not only enjoyed our meal but are very likely yo book again soon.

My husband had the 10 oz bacon chop with chips, pineapple and egg. Cooked to perfection My nephew had a delicious chicken tagliatelle dish, and I had the fish and chips. The batter was light and crispy, the fish was tasty white haddock served with chips and proper mushy peas. Despite being stuffed, we could not resist the delicious sounding deserts. Sticky toffee pudding .. delicious and I had caramac mousse with home made honeycomb. Absolutely delicious. All washed down with a bottle of Malbec. We will be back. REVISED REVIEW : The fact you keep responding calling me a liar and saying I am writing fictional novels? Absolutely appalling . I wondered why it was empty when we got there now I know why. Take some accountability for how disastrous your 'fine dining' establishment is. Once again I left no reviews else where but have now left a review on happycow also to advise people on how gross your customer service is.I never put a review on dishcult that would be a family member of which I was unaware had also left you an honest review ... 1. I HAVE LEFT 0 OTHER REVIEWS ON ANY OTHER SITE 2. WE WERE TOLD UPON ARRIVAL NO PIES WERE AVAILABLE PLEASE DO NOT CALL 8 PEOPLE LIARS WHO ALL WITNESSED THIS . NO LEEKS FOR THE PASTA - REPLACED WITH ONION , COULD COUNT THE MUSHROOMS IN THE PASTA ON ONE HAND THERE WAS THAT LITTLE IN IT. 3. THERE WERE 8 PEOPLE IN OUR PARTY NOT ALL WERE VEGAN - WE WERE HAPPY WITH THE VEGAN CHOICES AVAILABLE HOWEVER THE FOOD WAS VERY POOR , COLD , EXPENSIVE FOR THE PRODUCT. 4.CALLING A CUSTOMER A LIAR FOR TELLING AN ACTUAL FACT OF WHAT HAPPENED iS DISGUSTING. 5.CLEARY CANNOT TAKE ANY SORT OF CRITICISM 6. EXPECT A TRUTHFUL REVIEW ON TRUSTPILOT NOW AFTER BLATANTLY LYING TO TRY AND HIDE THE FACT YOUR FOOD AND SERVICE WAS RUBBISH 7. MY NAME IS NOT MARIE?? We arrived at 5pm and all of the pies on the menu were unavailable, found the menu rather limited as they were out of ingredients for some dishes and some were totally off the menu £18 for a very small bowl of pasta which arrived cold and had to be sent back . Found it way overpriced for the standard of food. Didn't have all the ingredients for the dish so subbed it with a bit of onion . The difference between a small banana blossom fish and chips and a large was a handful of chips with a £7 increase - extortionate Garlic bread tasted like raw garlic that hadn't been cooked properly . And the battered banana blossom was tasteless and greasy . My favourite part of the meal was the chocolate disc we were given with the bill. To say the food was a disappointment was an understatement after seeing many other good reviews. Perhaps we caught them on a bad night service and food wise as it wasn't a pleasant experience especially as we were celebrating an anniversary. Most likely wouldn't return .

Returning from an afternoon shopping trip, my wife fancied calling at a nearby bar restaurant for an early evening meal rather than driving the few miles home to prepare it. We'd recently heard good reports about the Fence Gate so we parked up and went to the bar. No, I'm not reviewing the wrong restaurant. After standing waiting at the unoccupied bar for almost ten minutes, we turned round and left. The place was obviously open and serving because a group were sitting at a table with half empty glasses. We continued on the road and went to the Bay Horse at Roughlee. The reception was MARKEDLY different. The Bay Horse was bright, warm, and trimmed up' for Halloween. The charming young man who greeted us on entry jokingly pointed to the artificial cobwebs apologising that the "cleaners haven't been in yet today" and, ascertaining that we would like to eat, showed us to a table, gave us the menu and asked what we'd like to drink. We were comfortably seated, chosing from the menu and sipping our drinks in no time. Absolutely perfect reception to customers. My wife chose fish, chips and mushy peas (the smaller portion) and I chose the cheese pie with chips - a bit unfair really because I regularly make it at home and home cooking always wins in a comparison. We were both very full and were very impressed with the Bay Horse.

We have been living in the area for the last year and have been a few times to the Bay Horse for drinks and food and have always been happy. We decided to bring our former neighbours here on a night out and booked a table for 8 for 7pm on a Saturday night. We arrived to a very empty pub and restaurant and were seated in the main dining room as the only guests all night. This felt a little strange especially as it was a Saturday evening. The room had no atmosphere, ambience and warmth . There was a log burner next to us which was unlit and although there were candles on the table they were also unlit. These small things would gone some way to improving the atmosphere in what was a large room full of empty tables. The lighting in this room was very stark which was very noticeable as the only diners The food was very good and enjoyed by all, as was the service. During the meal several large dogs were taken by the staff from upstairs and past this dining room to the front entrance of the pub. Although we were about 10 metres away the smell from the dogs was overpowering and very unpleasant. It lasted a few minutes and then was repeated when the dogs were brought back inside to go upstairs again. We appreciate the pub is dog friendly but the smell was awful especially when we were eating and this was very off putting.

On holiday with two sprightly OAPs we were looking for a lunch away from Barrowford. Lovely town with great restaurants but its main road is loud and busy. The Bay Horse is a 45 minute walk or so from Barrowford across the hill (avoiding the road). Steep descent and stepping stones across the little river included, quite adventurous. The pub itself is on a crossroads so easily accessible with a lot of parking too. We found the beer garden at the back quite relaxing, but it's roomy on the inside too. Service was friendly and prompt every time we visited (stayed nearby for a week). Good food at good prices, though at busy times it can be a bit of a wait. Worth it.

Oh dear! We had a very poor experience at The Bay Horse, Roughlee. SERVICE. When you pay for food and drink you expect a basic level of service from the hosting staff. On this occasion we were greeted with a smile by a young lady who showed us to our table in the main dining area. Drinks order was taken in good time and we set about perusing the menu. The waitress arrived with our tray of drinks and proceeded to remove each wine glass from the tray by pinching the top rim. This is not an acceptable, or indeed a hygienic method. None of the glasses that were delivered were spotless and while some chose to polish the glasses with their napkins one of the glasses required replacing as it had a heavy lipstick stain. At no point did the waitress attempt or offer to pour our wine. Starters and mains were ordered. When the starters arrived we had to mention to said waitress that there was no cutlery on the table with which to eat our food. She disappeared and returned with a fist full of knives and forks which she placed heavily, almost but not quite slammed, in a pile on the end of the table not even attempting to issue a set to each diner. As she walked away we each shot glances at each other in disbelief. Our main course arrived and once again cutlery was requested from the waitress. Once again she disappeared and returned with the missing items however this time she plonked them on the table in between two of the diners before walking away. At no point during our meal, starters or main course, were we asked if everything was okay with the food. It is important to note that throughout the time we were there our server maintained a happy smiling demeanor, nice enough BUT she shouldn't be a waitress. If she is new and is learning the trade then it is incumbent on the management to ensure she is correctly taught, supervised and mentored prior to being let loose on paying customers. FOOD. I will not go into the pros or cons of the food but suffice to say there were definitely more cons than pros but if required I can and will add detailed feedback later on... Chicken Liver Pate Pork Belly Pommes Dauphinoise Bay Horse Burger Sea Bass Suffice to say, in the opinion of our party, and this includes someone who spent many years in the hospitality trade, we are not able to recommend The Bay Horse. There are many better establishments to visit at this price point where you will feel you have been well looked after and served with carefully prepared good quality fare.

Due to reply,REVISED, I did not insult you, once you do you loose point and case. For pub grub it was dear, on fact £82 expensive. on entry the smell of fish was quite off putting but hoped it disappeared, it didn't, but did get less...On commenting to the nice polite bar man, " bloody he'll, its dear," in a joking, humour toned voice,"fine dining isn't cheap", I replied, "we'll see soon, I suppose", and we sat down in a dining area, not the snack area, as directed. In the pub was 1 lady in the snack area and think apart from us two, it was empty. Nice, decor, pleasant atmosphere, apart from the strong fishy odour, ok its an eatery so sort of forgave the odour... We took the drinks sat down to wood tables, with cutlery on laid napkins, NOT THE FINE DINING, the barman promised, bare wood pub tables, and paper napkins!!! not the finest dining I was sort of promised. For me fine dining is a cloth covered table, matching chairs and real laundered cloth napkins at least!!!. We studied the menu intently whilst taking in the fish odour, sipping our drinks and gasping at the prices, but for us if its good it might be worth it, as we were looking for a venue for an occassion in the next few weeks... "sod the expense, let's see what it's like," and we ordered from the , 'dining menu'. I love scallops, so the scallop starter dish was £12, so I I quired, " how many scallops do I get as it stated,"scallop with artichoke puree".. singular, not plural.. the barman, replied, " you get x3", great ill order that... and and gammon steak as a main, my partner ordered, a mushroom garlic something, basically it was like a mushroom pie, and she ordered a steak pie and new potatoes, at that point her starter was worded as if basically garlic mushrooms in sone sort of presentation we had not heatd of so looked forward to seeing what it was, like I said it arrived, basically a mushroom pie, but very nice presented well and she enjoyed it.. But, but we had to wait quite a long time to say one other person in eating, but we took that in our stride.... the starters arrived some 30 mins later and her mushroom "pie" looked well and quite the dish to be honest, I was a tad envy,. Well now I turn to my starter, looked impressive on a white long narrow plate, with x3 scallops and wild flowers as garnish and a "smear" of I believe artichoke puree, well... Well I was a little lost for words for £12 and a smear of artichoke puree the x3 scallops were no bigger than a 10p piece with 3 in total the taste wasnice granted a tiny bit chewy but acceptable to me but for £12 it was a total let down in terms if value for money..I bit my lip, said nothing and ate all the contents of the fish, didn't take long mind! my partners mushroom pie was also enjoyed both I taste, and value for money at think £7..We ate the starters and discussed them both, we both agreed hers was very nice, tasty and ok for the value, however, my partner normally remains tight lipped, but she was surprised as to the lack of content on my plate, we chuckled and the barman, waiter came over and asked if all was OK? yes I replied, ordered more drinks one soft, one larger shandy!! and he asked how was the fine fining experience going?, "I replied," let's see all the food, we have ordered and reserve the opinion..." .More serious time went by and the mains arrived, my partners steak pie looked nice and filles the plate think it was, £12,mine arrived and the gammon looked, nice, thick and sadly lost on the plate a basket of fries arrived, and I ordered extra onion rings... for £17 that gammon looked a sad morsel on the plate, a bit of side dressing, fries in a basket, onion rings separated in another dish, very heavily cooked dark brown and super crispy, sone would call them," cremated" but .. again let's eat.. both meals were ok, nothing to write home about, my partner left a bit, even after I tucked in, but mine was just, OK. overcooked fried egg, a few peas and reasonably tasty but again for the price, sorry just not worth £17.. and as for fine dining, Not really, and by a bloody long way..

We visited & stayed over in Barley recently, (next village over from Roughlee) we decided to have a nice walk to Roughlee & stopped for a drink at The Bay Horse.. the pub was very nice, we were directed to the bar area as we were only having drink but there wasn't any place to sit only one shelf style table with 2 stools, unfortunately the seats were taken whilst I was waiting for my partner to return from the bathroom. As the bar filled up suddenly with a lot of men with dogs I decided to check the upper seating area to see if there was space, unfortunately there wasn't, as I was returning to the bar the seating I just missed out on was then offered to a couple of locals who arrived well after we did, by whom I had then discovered was one of the staff, not working staff! Not paying customer! She knew we had been stood at the bar for a while waiting to sit down. I found it extremely rude. And due to this I doubt we would ever return. We was planning on ordering some bar food and would have had more drinks.. unfortunately I have a strong intolerance for rude people and favouritism. The staff then had a good gossip with the regulars as I did make it obvious how rude it was. Bit of advice, you either make everyone feel welcome or none at all. Let me know when the place is under new management. 👍

A very friendly village pub, a little of the beaten track but well worth the effort. The bar has a nice selection of local real ale, and the menu has a great selection also. Make the effort to find the place and I don’t think you will be disappointed!

Great venue for a Mother's Day lunch - food was excellent as was the service. Atmosphere good but perhaps a little (muted) background music would be nice? Will definitely return - thanks for a lovely lunch

Went for lunch as The Bay Horse has a vegan and vegetarian menu and we wanted somewhere local to where our friend lived. The place itself is lovely and cosy with an open kitchen and modern decor and outside seating for nice weather. The chap looking after us one of the owners but didn't get his name, was really friendly and welcoming and showed us to a table next to the fire. He said the soup of the day was vegan, without me even asking which I thought was attention to detail, so we ordered two mushroom soups, two large banana blossom fish and chips and a small fish and chips for our friend. The food was excellent, the mushroom soup was full of flavour, the banana blossom fish and chips was the best I've had and I've eaten a few. The batter was light and crisp and he mentioned that they made sure it was made with vegan cider and soda water, hence how fabulous it was. We were too full for pudding, so next time I will have a small fish and chips. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely return to try other dishes. Highly recommended.

Awesome place, don't walk past it, go in! (If you're a day tripper put it on as a must visit). Only popped in for a quick beer with a mate. It is wonderfully homely and quirky at the same time. Masses of music memorabilia from the 1960s onwards, I relived my life from 6yrs to well many more years in there! Super friendly staff, even showed me the 'gig' cellar. Dog friendly too. Will definitely be going back!
