The location was fantastic, but the restaurant itself felt tired and lacked cleanliness, including the restrooms. For instance, there were cobwebs on the light fixture near our table. Additionally, there was no draught ale available, which is disappointing for a bar/restaurant with a steak pie as its signature dish. The only draught option was Guinness, which felt somewhat embarrassing for a place that advertises itself as a bar/restaurant. When I requested a bottle of Corona, it was served without lime. The steak pie was underwhelming, and the mashed potatoes were cold. At £16.95 for a steak pie, the quality needs to be much better to encourage a return visit. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I won’t be returning, as it fell short compared to competitors.

Absolutely fantastic food. I've never written a review before but it was too good not to. I had the steak and it was cooked really tender and juicy. Came with some of the best onion rings I've had in years and incredible chips along with it. Really good side salad as well. Friendly staff and very quick service. 10/10 I highly recommend.

The two staff on last and young man were pleasant enough however the service was slow. Ordered rump steak and was like old leather, no steak knife and steak was very fatty and not worth the money. Husband had fish and chips but they had no peas so offered mixed veg and when it arrived had salad and vegetables! Was a bit annoyed that we arrived ordered yet people came in after ordered same and got served food before us leaving us assuming staff messed up orders. Would not recommend personally. Staff friendly but quality of good very poor

Something has gone far wrong with this place. We are local and ate there regularly last year when the food and staff were great. I can't comment on the food now as we were turned away from an empty restaurant. It's a shame the family who used to run it seem to have gone.

Disappointing. We are fairly local and occassionally call in on our way home. Something has happened, a change in management or ownership? We were not greeted upon entry, the lady with the big coat and huge nails behind the bar was too busy footering around with others, eventually she shooed to a table up in the cold area. The food was ok, the dessert menu was a bit of a shambles though. Sadly things have gone downhill since Nov 23, the staff (and maybe management) need to do some customer service training. The atmosphere in the place was dreadful too, no ambient lights, just harsh ceiling lights (they had wall lights and candles so no excuse) and the music was like a pop/rave/Abba youtube mix - totally wrong for a Scottish restaurant. We'll be looking at tripadvisor before we stop in there again. You've got some socks to pull up Slanj!

A very very long wait. We were told at first it would 15mins, then 20mins later we were told it would be 15mins. It turned out to be 55mins . The food was not good. Dry chicken with haggis inside quite cold. Vegetables cold and hard and a serving of poor mashed potatoes. My son had a vegetarian hamburger which he said was very ordinary. There were only two overworked serving staff which was insufficient, and were told that there was only one very overworked chef who had also to wash the dishes.

Three of us dropped in at half one today - the only people at that point. Soup was lukewarm and we waited about 40mins for toasties. One was made of “heels” (ends of a sliced loaf). The server told us there was a problem with their sandwich press but they were awful. Yes we could have complained but we didn’t. It would have prolonged our stay.

Sadly we were very disappointed with our visit on NYE - I had called to book and told we had to be there at 4 as it was full from 6pm - All fine - We have been to The Slanj a few years ago and loved it - Authentic and an attempt to be sustainable which made it a bit quirky and interesting … We arrived and it seems to have been filled with pine tables and chairs , there was one other family in and us - ! No atmosphere on a scottish evening for NYE …. The wine choice , by the glass was very limited -We had one glass and were not offered anything also to drink throughout the meal - The wait staff preferred to natter to people at the bar … Food - The starter arrived in less than 5 minutes …. Prawn Bruschetta - basically a cold ( not toasted) dry piece of panini with cold prawns and bit of chopped chilli pepper ! Not a glance of olive oil nor seasoning .. Next was chicken with mash - the chicken was hard , dry and the haggis inside was cold - and so this was certainly not cooked on that day - the mash was brown ( but tasty ) but again definitely NOT cooked that evening .. Mine made it into a napkin to give to the pooch when we got back … My husband had steak which was beautiful but that has to be cooked to order and so could not have been pre prepped … As we were not offered any further drinks we paid and left .. so our NYE “ dinner” was in fact 40 minutes at best with one drink each …. In an almost empty space This place should be an absolute goldmine as the building is beautiful , accessible and we have met the family a few years ago and they were lovely and so it is a crying shame to see it this way - Personally the container in the car park is an eye sore and it was far more authentic when the shop was inside the building .. Sadly this evening out was not good and it seems a shame as it could be an absolutely stunning restaurant space with a little more heart and Scottish soul -

Jahrhunderts.

The steak pie, a culinary masterpiece, showcased perfectly tender, succulent meat enveloped in a rich, savoury gravy. Its flaky, golden pastry crust added a delightful textural contrast, elevating the dish to a gastronomic delight. Moreover, the attentive and friendly staff only enhanced the overall dining experience, ensuring every detail was met with professionalism and warmth. On the other hand, the Balmoral chicken, a regal creation, featured succulent poultry, expertly prepared and seasoned to perfection. Its harmonious blend of flavours, with hints of Scotch whisky and a creamy sauce, provided a sophisticated and delectable experience that truly epitomised the pinnacle of culinary craftsmanship. The exceptional value for money further solidified this dining establishment as a remarkable choice for those seeking both exquisite cuisine and an affordable dining experience.

On our arrival the restaurant was almost empty. We were seated and waited around 10-15 mine before anyone came to take a drinks order. We were expecting the prawn starter to be hot but the prawns were ice cold on a cold bruschetta. The beef burger is a frozen burger, not fresh produce which was very disappointing. The toilet facilities smelt strongly of dog and looked like they hadn't been cleaned. Overall very disappointing overpriced meal.

A gorgeous setting. We stayed in our van here for the night after finding it in Brit Stops. We were excited to eat here and we weren’t disappointed by the presentation and flavours. The starters were exceptional. We had the chilli prawn bruschetta and makerel pate. Delicious! For main courses: Chicken burger-very good quality chicken and flavours Salmon and King Prawn linguine-top meal Pan fried sea bass- this tasted really good but my husband was disappointed by how tiny the meal was especially the fillet of fish. We would have given 5 stars if the fish had been a bit more generous and the sweet potato fries weren’t overcooked. Also it took three asks to get another glass of wine as they were so busy and kept forgetting. Overall a lovely place to eat and well worth a visit.😊

My husband and I were on a walking weekend in Arrochar. On the Friday night we jumped in the car and drove to Tarbet to find a restaurant. First one we came to was Slanj. We asked if there was a table for two and they politely said yes. The restaurant has a great Scottish theme to it. Lots of tartan, deer antlers, Scottish themed paintings from a local artist, it is very quaint, rustic and very Scottish. We loved it from the moment we walked in. The staff were very polite, friendly, professional and attentive but not overly attentive. We ordered starters of soup of the day for myself which was lentil, my husband ordered the haggis Bon Bon’s... superb! Very fresh, my husband said it was the best haggis he’d every tasted. The soup was homemade and fresh... delicious. Our mains were Buttermilk chicken burger, which was again delicious and fresh, lovely sized portions too, and the fish pie. Fresh fish, prawns, and delicious sauce, boiled new potatoes and perfectly cooked vegetables too. We enjoyed out meal so much we booked for the Saturday night too. On the Saturday night after a long day walking up The Cobbler, we decided to just order mains, we both had sirloin steaks, we like them cooked medium/rare and they were cooked very well. From experience, steaks can be cooked badly but this steak not only was cooked perfectly, but it was the best steak we’d ever had. We spoke with the owner Tom, he told us where he get gets his butcher meat from and we will be taking a trip to Callaghan’s butchers in Helensburgh for some sirloin steaks. We told Tom we were very impressed and most definitely will be back at Slanj in the near future. We will be recommending this restaurant to all our friends and family. After the past year, we need to support our local family run businesses, they work so hard and clearly are dedicated to the restaurant and their customers. Tom and his mum run this place and family run businesses do have a pride and dedication and passion for people and that is clear. If you have ever watched Outlanders, then Tom would not look out of place on set lolCant wait to come back, cant wait to try other items on the menu and we would like to say a HUGE thank you to and all your staff, see you all soon!

Unfortunately for us, it seemed to be the latter. We booked, arrived at our allotted time, got told our booking didn't count, because it was made through Facebook, despite receiving a "see you on Saturday!" message. Finding us a table seemed to be a huge effort for the man at the door, despite the place being empty. The cleanliness of the place was questionable, and that's putting it politely, food mediocre, and we paid almost £190 for the pleasure! The food would be acceptable if it wasn't so over priced. The only positives I took from the experience were the incredibly friendly waitresses, and the selection of Fyne Ales on offer. I really wanted this place to good, first family dinner since lockdown, and left majorly, majorly, disappointed.

The man in charge did not look up at all. After some time, a waitress turned up and the man pointed at us and told her to take us to a table. I interrupted to say that we hadn’t booked and just wanted to know whether they had a table. He then looked up for the first time and told us they were fully booked, in a nasty way, and the waitress started sniggering. We left feeling foolish. We are staying locally and have tried the other restaurants in the area. All have been cheerful and friendly. Not this one. We won’t be booking there in any of our remaining nights.

There are numerous long distance walks including the 3 lochs way within minutes of the carpark, and easy walks into Arrochar where there are other eating and drinking places. Staff were friendly and helpful ***Ps I’ve read a bunch of these reviews and if your not happy tell them !!! ... the staff are busy and very accommodating there’s no point moaning once you’ve Left ... they can’t improve YOU’RE service if they don’t know you weren’t happy... ***I’ll be back to eat drink and be merry very soon AND take advantage of your car park overnight x Ellen, Logan & Heather ✌️

At the slanj bar we went for lunch first of all I walked into the bathroom and it was absolutely discussing I felt like I wanted to be sick because off the smell and looks. Then we had our lunch the plates were cold the food was bland and it was overall disgusting. The tables were not cleaned and were sticky and the service has got to be the worst I’ve ever came across the waiters had absolutely no manners at all never asked how our meal was or anything not even a smile on their face. It was a shame as I was really looking forward to it aswell but oh well their is restaurants like that I suppose very poor!!

We went on Saturday 14th December and it was both our 40th Anniversary and my 75th birthday, it was lovely and cosy inside and food was very nice.... I am now a convert to toasted cheese and pickle sandwiches ! The young man who runs the place was most welcoming( no kilt as had been working with the barrels) but the Scottish music in the background was very pleasant, Would go again if in the area and if you are please try it.

We had a fantastic night at Slanj! The food was brilliant and the complimentary shuttle service from our hotel to the restaurant and back was an added bonus! Huge thank you to Tom, Jane, Robert, Lauren and Tam - keep doing what you’re doing!

We booked a table at this restaurant about 5 days ago as we are staying in the area and had heard good things. On arrival tonight we were told to sit wherever we like and when we said we had booked it made no difference as we could still sit wherever. Not an issue in itself but clearly little in the way of preparation.

Really welcoming proper traditional Scottish feel, with friendly accomodating staff (in paticular the four legged type) :) and therefore dog friendly menu too, should be more like that down South where we are from :)

We stayed in Tarbet last week and found the Slanj to be a little haven in the town. Friendly and warm, it also has a really handy shop that can supply a surprisingly large range of food and drink! Thank you.

Popped in just before lunch for a coffee and a wee breakfast roll. Greeted by a very welcoming young blonde girl in a kilt , very polite attentive and friendly Great coffee and a wee roll and sausage with my other half going for a slice of home baked cake . Great quick service and good interaction with us , the only customers .Otherwise she kept busy setting up for lunch .As a hospitality manager for some 40 years would love to have as dedicated staff as her. Good quirky venue Great service but only negative was it was freezing nae heating on a cold Scottish morning . Back toilet areas could do with tidy up but I expect work in progress Having spent previous week visiting Argyll and having a few stop offs others could learn a few things about hospitality from the delightful young waitress With her welcoming our tourists we are in same hands

Stumbled upon this restaurant after a long walk up Argyll forest...needless to say their local lager went down well afterwards. Decided to return for dinner later that evening as the vibe was something completely different to what you’d expect to find...church-turned-restaurant that knows who & what it is...returned that night for a glorious 2 course meal, food was lovely - hearty, generous portions, and absolutely delicious - and really enjoyed the wine. Very reasonable coatings. They had a local band perform so we took a table near the back as we anticipated wanting to avoid the noise howeverrrrr we were soon moving up towards the atmosphere as they were bloody good. Great night all round, if you’re after something a little different and a little more ‘local’ would def recommend...the owner even offered us a taxi service between our accommodation. Go if you can.

My husband and I decided to try Slanj Restaurant (we live in Scotland and I have a South African accent as I grew up there). My husband ordered a soup and sandwich and I ordered mussels in white wine from the daily specials board(also on the menu) and was told they have run out of mussels (12.45pm). That was really aggravating as nothing was said to us when we were given the menus.Hubby ordered a lager and I ordered a glass of Sauvignon blanc at £5.50 for a 250ml glass (pointing to it on the menu) . (I DO NOT DRINK CHARDONNAY AT All and the wine I was given was definitely a Sauvignon blanc. When we were ready we went to the till and was not given a bill, only told what the amount was £24.15 which confused me as restaurants usually give you the bill first. After I paid I was asked whether I want the bill which I then said yes. On our way home I looked at the bill and noticed I was charged £6.95 for a chardonnay. I was fuming as I was specific to what I wanted. I honestly feel this was intentionally done and we will NEVER go back. So please future customers please check your bill before paying.

Lekker gegeten hier. Schotse aankleding. Voormalig kerkje heeft alles; bar, restaurant, winkeltje. Op het grote parkeerterrein kan je je camper voor de nacht stallen. Redelijke prijs. Prima. nationalistisch schots. Typisch. Personeel/ eigenaar vriendelijk, tikje rauw.

We called in here twice during our visit to Tarbet. The first occasion was simply for coffees but we came back on another occasion for lunch and enjoyed vegetarian burgers with salad and fries. They were fine. Service was welcoming and friendly. The place is nicely decorated and has a 'homely' feel about it. We would return here for a casual meal in good surroundings.

Slanj won our hearts immediately when we walked in, with the recorded Scottish music playing in the background and the waiters in kilts. Someone, finally, gets it. We don't want to be blasted with warmed-over American pop music when we're going out for dinner in (in this instance) an old deconsecrated church in the middle of Scotland! The food was good, the waiter, in addition to wearing a kilt, was heads-up with a great sense of humor. We would go back in a heartbeat.

This was our second visit to this restaurant, the food is lovely and the staff are attentive, our waiter remember us from our visit in April. Don't expect a conventional interior,it's a mix match of tables and chairs, which adds to the experience.

Imagine school dinner, imagine a dank chippy, imagine something from the freezer aisle that is both then undercooked, and covered in grease. Welcome to the slanj.

Decided to try this place as read so many reviews about it. Stayed for the night parked in our Motorhome. An excellent spot for walking the local area. Bit disappointed with the food. My wife had the steak pie as recommended, came without any gravy so was very dry. Had to ask the waitress for gravy. Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful, got served by a young lady of very few words who just put the meals down on the table and left. Very quiet for a friday night, by 930pm just the two of us and a local at the bar. Maybe it was just one of those nights..?...

Was expecting great quality fresh food . But very disappointed . Looking forward to local mussels but off the menu . Scallops were fresh but the sauce let it down and the bread was stale and expensive . Both in the end had fish and chips , that was two very small pieces of fish each , couldn't hardly see any fish , most likely frozen due to the texture and appearance . Staff were excellent and beer was good

I am giving you an excellent review based on previous visits but arrived Thursday 14th November at 11:15 and it was closed. Website says open at 10:00 and opening time on door says 10:30. Several people left disappointed during my 20min seat on bench. Off to Port Bannatyne for my brunch. Can you update your opening hours on door and social media platforms.

What an absolute find. This place was amazing in every way. The staff are welcoming, friendly and so attentive. The food was out of this world. Would definitely recommend 100% and will be back. Just wish we had found it at the start of our holiday and not at the end

Met up with a friend for lunch today. ALWAYS reliably happy with our meals at The Esplanade over the many years.... But today's young chef was very astute with his skills. We had *Cullen skink, the baguette was fresh and warmed....so often it is not; (it's the little things like this that make you come back,), *fish n chips, and *incredibly chunky steak pie, with a lid rising up to the ceiling I'm my opinion all 3 meals really were the best examples on the island. Well done to: *The Esplanade for keeping up the standards of quality which bring people back * The Chef * The always friendly and helpful waitress 😁 (Love the new curtains and furnishings 😁)
