After visiting the Monet Exhibition, we were going to use the Terrace Bar upstairs but it was raining, so we waited quite a while to get a table downstairs, wish we had not. If you enter from the gallery it does not say table service if you come in from the street, it does. We waited to be served, took ages to place our order. We eventually got someone’s attention to take our order. Two Earl Grey Teas, Cajun Prawns and a Cheese and Ham toastie. Only one small tea pot with two tea bags, and a tiny jug of hot water. Two small cups, they had run out of teapots. The food was poorly presented for the money, the Prawns were served on one slice of toast. No salad with Toastie just a chutney, which I don’t like. We were charged for one tea. Would not recommend.

The. Cafe was nice, the scone was lovely. But… we ordered two decaf coffees but instead were given two strong caffeinated drinks. The waitress told us they were decaffeinated, however our resulting palpitations and nausea showed otherwise. Ruined the rest of the day!

We are local and are regulars at Sketch. We've been going at least once a week for a few years now. Sketch - alongside Robinsons and Partisan - are our favourite cafes in York and (in our view) the best cafes by some distance. Firstly, the food is here is fabulous - way above what you would expect in a cafe. It is inventive and cooked perfectly. It is also well priced - expect to pay £8-£10 for top quality food. The cakes - there is always a wide range - are also great. Again, much better than most other cafes. For example, last time I was there I had a lemon posset. No where else I know off serves this. Needless to say, it was excellent. There is now a bar upstairs overlooking the wild garden and city walls. It s a great spot to chill. The wine and cocktails are - again - fabulous - and the view is pretty relaxing, overlooking a part of York most tourists miss. Finally - the staff are great. Marie is a perfect host - naturally warm, attentive. The waitresses are also great. It can get busy - mainly because it is very good - but it is worth it.

Sat out on the balcony overlooking the garden. Had a small cheeseboard and two cocktails. Cocktails were warm. No ice, not refrigerated. Mine wasn't nice at all. Cheese was nice, but chutney and butter in prepacked plastic tubs the size of a thimble. Considering the cocktails were between £9-£11 I expected more.

The location was good and the staff were helpful and friendly. I can only assume it had been very busy seeing as the bottle the milk came in had not been thoroughly washed and neither had the teapot, with old tea drips down the outside and a teapot rim that wasn't particularly clean.

Visited Sketch cafe for lunch. The food is really delicious and different. My husband had mushroom stroganoff served on locally produced bread and I had whipped feta with squash and pine nuts and focaccia bread. We had wonderful coffee and pistachio cake I would recommend this fantastic cafe to my friends and family and we will return. The staff are smiley and knowledgeable about their menu. The cafe is table service and we had a friendly welcome to be seated.

This is one of York's hidden gems. This cafe by the Art Gallery in York is fabulous during the day but they also do special evening meals every month. They are absolutely incredible. We have eaten in some very good restaurants across the world, but Sketch is right up there with any of them. The quality of food (and service) is better than anywhere else in York. It absolutely wipes the floor with the rather dull Roots and the very average Ivy restaurants - there is no comparison. In the most recent experience, we were served six courses that were all fabulous. The lamb, the two sweets (particularly the caramel one!), and the cod roe stood out but they were all bloomin delicious. The chef is an absolute star and Maria is a first class host full of warmth. It's probably the biggest secret in York though locals are starting to realise what a fabulous restaurant this is.

My friend booked a table for afternoon tea during the Halloween weekend, however he forgot to mention that I required a gluten free option. When I mentioned this upon arrival it obviously gave them very little time to change the set menu. However what they delivered out of the kitchen was absolutely delicious. I cannot fault anything that was served to me. For zero notice during a very busy afternoon I have to say it was better than many other places that have a regular gluten free menu. The service was welcoming and attentive and I would recommend to anyone.

I had high hopes for Sketch as I'd heard good things about it, and took the opportunity to visit after a trip to the gallery. It was a Saturday lunchtime and I had to wait quite a while for service. There only seemed to be one waitress on duty and she was dealing with tables inside and out. One waitress really doesn't seem enough for such a peak time. She was pleasant, took my order and cleared the table of the previous occupants' cups. My coffee arrived fairly quickly and was ok but the cup was on the small side and it was impossible to get my finger through the handle so not the most practical choice of crockery. I'd ordered scrambled eggs and asparagus, and after quite some time this arrived. The scrambled egg was dry, browned and over-cooked. It was served on dry bread with three spears of asparagus. The asparagus was crunchy and tasty and redeemed an otherwise pitiful dish. I ate the asparagus and (dry) bread and left the egg. Nobody asked if anything was wrong or even generally checked in that all was ok. On reflection I wish I'd complained but I wanted a relaxing Saturday and didn't really want to raise it at the time, especially in a full cafe with busy staff. I left very disappointed and won't be back.

Been coming here for a while now as we are local - once a week for probably 2 years or so. It is just a great cafe. Unlike most York cafes, the guy who does the cooking is an incredible chef. There will be something that sounds quite simple on the menu but when you order it you realise how much effort has gone into it. Everything has a little twist in it that turns it into something special. We have been going to the evening sittings in their new sister cafe - same owners and cooks - that they have every Friday night. I would say the food there is way better than anything else in York. I would certainly put it above Roots. Finally, the staff are fab. All of them are friendly and its a place you can relax. Maria is very good at what she does.

A nice surprise to find such a lovely cafe in the art gallery. Staff couldn’t be friendlier and the food was fresh and tasty. The open prawn sandwich had a great mix of flavours with fennel and dill. Definitely worth a visit even if you’re not going into the art gallery itself.

I dropped in for tea and cake whilst my wife continued in the gallery (she spent a LONG time in the ceramics area). Service from the young staff team was cheerful, prompt and efficient. She eventually joined me and decided a spot of lunch was in order. We were served by a lady (whom we took to be the owner or manager) and who had just finished delivering the final pieces of a fantastic looking buffet to a 3 generations family group who were celebrating a 21st birthday. My wife wasn’t sure what she wanted and the lady was very accommodating in allowing her to go off menu, providing a bespoke lunch. Having already had a scone I didn’t want much so the lady suggested I might like a few pieces of buffet food that hadn’t been served. Both my wife's lunch and my snack were just right. Good price, terrific service… just wish I didn’t live 3 hours drive away or I’d be in there often. Although, given the quality of the food and cakes it might be good that we don’t live closer!

Sat out in the square by the fountain it felt sort of continental. Although there is the red hop on/hop off bus terminal right there! I liked the coffee, although we did have complaints from the kids about the hot chocolate basically because its not very sweet but that's the sort of hot chocolate that I like so all about taste!

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
