Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)

Popped in for a coffee as we passed by. However, only instant coffee offered as apparently the coffee machine was on order so we had soft drink. I found a vacant sofa to sit on. However, I was told by a lady sitting opposite that someone was sitting there. They must have been invisible! I moved and looked for somewhere else to sit. I looked at several tables but they all had signs on to say they were reserved. I found a small space next to the fire. It was a Sunday and I noticed several couples asking for the Carvery. The time was around 14:30 and the Carvery was advertised to be served until 16:00. They were told they could not have a Carvery as other people had booked in. I didn’t have any food so cannot comment on this but suggest if you want a Carvery to book ahead.

Stayed here last night and had a great experience , such a lovely welcoming place and atmosphere plus fantastic food . Firstly it’s kinda like a motel with nice sized chalet rooms and it feels like something on an American sitcom but with far far better accommodation because the bed is bigger than some of the bedsits I had as a teenager ! I also had the opportunity to try the food , it’s got a good menu and I had the surf and turf and it blew me away with how good it was and the portion size - real chips REAL CHIPS that were well cooked with a 10oz steak on a bed of with onion rings and bettered prawns plus a dip/sauce , it was fantastic !! So if you’re looking for a good place to stay or fabulous food give this one a go

Had an spontaneous visit to York and decided to stay at this hotel for the night booking an evening meal and breakfast. The evening meal was beautiful. The ribs are not for the faint hearted. The room was spacious and well presented with ensuite bathroom. Very clean and comfortable. The outside garden opposite the rooms is wonderful in this gorgeous weather. There was a band on who were pretty decent. We went to bed before the band was finished and were pleasantly surprised that even with the window open you could only just barely here them. There was a buffet style breakfast with cooked breakfast to order. Overall a great place to stay.

Myself and my husband live locally and opted to eat here (on a rare childfree night) after wanting to try it for a few months. Unfortunately the experience and food was underwhelming. Firstly, the menu was quite uninspiring compared to the spring menu (change of chef I believe). The steak was presented well and was cooked as requested, but came completely unseasoned. The chips were very nice, but again completely unsalted. (We also had to try 3 salt grinders to find one that worked!). The onion rings were oily and slightly undercooked. The duck dish sounded nice on paper and was presented in an attractive way. Taste-wise the dish was ruined by a sickly sweet 'jus', which needed to be less sweet and more acidic to cut through the richness of the duck and dauphinois potato and counter the sweetness of the red cabbage. The dauphinois was very dry and flavourless and the portion was tiny. The dish was missing the crispy leeks and instead it came with, obviously, some watercress. Now the dessert - the cheesecake was the worst I have ever eaten! It had a soggy oat base (with sultanas in!), like mushed up flapjack. The cheese mixture had a large amount of gelatine in which made it wibbly and eradicated the creamy mouthfeel that a cheesecake should have. The sticky toffee pudding was good, but unfortunately the custard was instant. The food service was slow, but the service from the young waitress was fairly attentive. The menu prices are acceptable, but based on the food we unfortunately we won't be returning.

I ordered lime and soda to drink and was very impressed with the cost of it The young waitress was very friendly also. Will be returning if in the area again.

The title has no reflection on the Red Lion. My wife booked a meal here on the coldest night of the year so far. On entering the bar/ restaurant we were greeted warmly by a really polite young lady who showed us to our seats. We looked through the menu and both decided on the luxurious fish pie. Well it was delicious the best we have ever had. Beautifully creamy and full of different sea foods. We both had puddings and again they were great. Washed down with a bottle of wine . We had a great night and were looked after from start to going home . Thanks we will be back.

We phoned half hour before calling and managed to get a table for four of us. I’m so glad we did. The Sunday lunch was beautiful. We ordered starters which were presented lovely. Two had Cajun chicken bites, one had prawn cocktail and I had tomato soup all very tasty. We all ordered the carvery with a choice of three meats, Yorkshire pudding, roast and mash potatoes plus such a choice of vegetables all perfectly cooked. Topped up with various sauces and tasty gravy. Two then ordered cheese cake with ice cream. We were served by a very friendly young lady who was extremely busy but nothing was too much trouble for her. We have eaten here a few times in the past but this time it was exceptional and will be back very soon.

Chose this venue to meet friends as it is halfway for us all. Never been before , but will happily re visit. Just outside York coming from Harrogate, good sized car park. Entered into traditional pub, but ate in the lovely warm dining room. Linen tablecloths and napkins added to the occasion. We all had the carvery, delicious food with melting beef and plenty of accompaniments. Left room for puds too! £14.95. For 2 courses well worth it. Good start to Christmas. Happy to recommend

Recommended by a local as a gastro pub. Sadly well overrated, menu mainly very typical pub grub. Fish & chips, pie, lasagne etc.We opted for the sharing plates, one fish & one meat. Very patchy, some nice bits like fish goujons & fishcake but others mediocre. Bread that came with it was dry & there was no butter, i guess we could have asked but we didn’t. We were looking for somewhere to stop for a pub lunch on the way out of York and saw this place along the road. We stopped, checked they were still serving food, as it was past traditional lunchtime (they were), and a quick glance over the menu told me it was what we were looking for. The menu has all the usual pub food, so good for keeping everyone happy. They have a 'burger menu', with burgers made by the local butcher. Two of us had burgers, and they were indeed delicious. Lovely fish too, and both fries and homemade chips available for different dishes (I really like having both options as again, this suits everyone). I noticed there was a sandwich menu too, which is good, because sometimes something lighter at lunch is what you want. Friendly service, not long to wait at all, and a really cosy, homely feel about the pub. It's great when you chance upon something and it's just what you were looking for!

Myself and husband were passing at the weekend and popped in for lunch. Biggest mistake we made, the menu looked lovely and we ordered a roast. We had been waiting 30 minutes and it still hadnt arrived. So i just asked the waitress how long it would be? She replied quite abruptly ill go and find out. With that, a lady came back i'm assuming the land lady, and was exstremely rude and told us if we dont like waiting she is happy for us to leave as everything is cooked fresh to order. We were taken aback by this and said its not a problem we were just asking. When it eventually came out it was awful! Obviousely just reheated, the meat tasted funny and it did not look appetising in the slightest and the veg was over cooked it was just horrible and after what she had said to us, we were expecting a lovely meal. We had pork and there was no apple sauce with it or offered to us either. When it came to paying we went to the bar and the same women turned her back to us, how very rude! I am in catering and the hospitality business myself and would not dream of treating my customers like that not alone serve them food that is inedible! Disgraceful we will not be returning shame as we thought we had found a little gem, how wrong was we.

Visited the Red Lion (Boroughbridge Road, Upper Poppleton) May '17 with mum for a rare Sunday roast dinner out. Having never eaten here before we thought we'd give it a try.Unfortunately the overriding opinion of the meal was that we left still hungry. In my humble opinion, at a price point of £12 for lunch, the portion sizes are abysmally small. The attached picture was what I was served with. Yes, that's 1 roast potato! When asked if the meal was ok, we commented on the portion sizes and 4 more roast potatoes were brought out for us to share. Aside from the lack of a decent amount of it, the food for me was good, I had the lamb which was cooked perfectly.Mum had the beef, she had requested the grizzle to be cut off, to which the waitress assured her there would be none. However, there was a significant amount of fat and grizzle on the meat when brought out. She commented that it tasted like that boil in the bag meat you can get, and it did not appear to be carved. We did not find the meal good value for money at all and hence we probably won't return. Hopefully the owners can take this review as constructive criticism and use it to improve the dining experience, although from some of the responses I've seen to reviews on here; I'm not sure that will be the case.

The service was quick and the staff were friendly and attentive. I had the Red Lion Burger which was delicious, and my partner enjoyed the Steak & Ale Pie. I found the atmosphere quite casual so would recommend for a laid-back lunch, but I would happily visit on an evening also. We were slightly disappointed that some of the options on the menu were not available, but there was plenty of other choice. Overall we had a pleasant visit here and would return in the future and recommend to others.

Used a groupon voucher for beer and burger offer - waste of time and money in my opinion. Would have been a great opportunity for the chef to showcase his food and earn repeat custom - instead we were served the thinnest tasteless fries I have ever seen plus a tasteless, thick, greasy burger in a dry bun ! Understand that it was an offer but must have been the cheapest burger a cheap supermarket had to offer - didn't eat more than a mouthful !

We went for Sunday lunch as a party of 6. We hadn't booked a table but were accommodated in the restaurant after I called to check availability 10 minutes before we arrived. The service was slow and our food seemed to take a long time. They had run out of chicken which was disappointing for Sunday lunch given it was only 1:30pm. Being gluten free I was impressed how they could accommodate my dietary needs. The real ale and wine selection was credible. Authentic Yorkshire feel to the place. Food was ok when it arrived but beef a little on the tough side for those that ordered it in our party. We won't rush back in haste but don't discount if you're nearby and want to try somewhere new/fancy a change to your local jaunts.

The "gourmet" homemade burger came with salad, chips and coleslaw. The pub is very spacious with lots of little areas. Nobody else was in at 6pm. Good music playing. Atmospheric lighting, candles on each table, stone floors, all very classy and tasteful. The burger was just less than 1" thick presented in a toasted bun. Very tasty and the 6 chips, stacked up like Jenga, were really delicious. Friendly service. Clean toilets. Loads of parking. Very nice pub.

Not a destination eatery. The food was just ok but expensive, service was just ok, not really attentive.Nothing to get excited about but would probably return if I was passing and hungry.

I have visited the Red Lion before and can honestly say that I enjoyed each visit. My recent visit was with family totalling 11 in all. The service ws friendly and the food from the fairly modest menu was of very good quality. Although I have never used the accomodation, the fact that it is usually fully booked speaks for itself. For visitors to York the Red Lion is handily placed for the Park and Ride, just a couple of minutes down the road.Overall I was very satisfied. Thursday nights they have a small but very entertaining jazz group

Stayed for one night for a reunion in York, all in all not a lot to shout about, the rooms where basic but functional and expected more for the price. Breakfast was nice, full English all the trimmings.

We visited the national railway museum with our two year old son yesterday and I decided to take the scenic route (A59) back home to Lancashire, hoping we'd pass somewhere decent to eat soon after leaving York city centre. Saw the red lion from the road and decided to pull over and check it out - and have to say I'm glad that we did!We got to the pub at 16.45 and tried to order food to be told that chef had had to pop out and would be back half an hour later. We decided we were happy to wait 30 mins, after which member of staff immediately came over to take our order. The fact that the 30 mins absolutely flew by and didn't seem like long at all says a great deal about the ambience and quality of the place as well as the relaxing effect it seemed to have on us! We ordered food and have to say it was absolutely delicious. Again, we had our two year old son with us and he was made to feel very welcome, enjoying banter with the lovely dark-haired girl who welcomed us to the place, and he absolutely loved the food, demolishing a full children's meal when at the minute he's being quite fussy what he eats! Further great service from the guy who took our food order and presumably the landlord who brought our food to the table - seemed an absolute gentleman.Prices were very good, food was incredible and the place was very clean and well fitted-out. Other patrons seemed lovely as well, as did all staff. What more could you ask for. It's also worth noting that we actually stayed there a total of 1 hour 45 minutes and that absolutely flew. If I'm anywhere near York at any point in the future I'll definitely try to return. If any of the guys are reading this thanks for making us feel welcome and for a great meal before our journey home.

Called to see jazz band they had advertised, was told no band on so thought we would eat, was then told they had stopped serving even though it was before closing time, so said could we just have a cheese board, they said I will ask like we asked for the earth, then apparently they have no cheese in the building, what a dreadfully run pub obviously won't be returning

Arrived there ten minutes before end of service to check if the kitchen could still be bothered to warm up a lasagne and a steak pie and a few chips. The only words uttered by the waiter were move your phone, food was quite average however the waiters attitude is probably one of the worst I have ever come across ever, I have had better dining experiences at McDonald's! Avoid!

My wife and I called in for the first time today, we are regular commuter's to York, we ordered Beef Burger with Cheese the meal was terrible. Apart from the actual beefburger itself the rest of it seemed to have been cobbled together from left overs of a Sunday lunch. The chips were not really chips but resembled reheated Roast Potatoes that had been cut to resemble chips, they were brown and tasted old. On the side of the plate was what appeared to be a lump of white sauce in which was thrown a couple of cold halved potatoes as if from a salad bar. My wife asked for some mayonnaise and I asked for some tomato sauce, the mayonnaise was given to us in a small cruet which was fine but the tomato sauce was given to us in a Heinz bottle like something from a greasy transport café. There appeared to be some greenery on top of one of the halved Burger Buns on both our plates this was tough stringy and awful I left mine on the plate. In short the burger was a burger the rest of what was on the plate looked like left overs and was terrible. £20 completely wasted. Our family own and run a pub in Skipton I have taken pictures of our meal before and after getting home our family looked at what we were served today and agree it was disgusting. Our family have served food for a long time and we would not dare to offer something like this to any customer. Extremely disappointed is an understatement. Never again.

I have just been to the Red Lion for an anniversary meal. I would like to say it was absolutely beautiful, the lamb just fell off the bone and the vegetables were beautifully cooked. The staff were lovely and very personable, it was a warm atmosphere and the piano playing n the background was lovely. Would recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere to stay or eat.Thank you Red Lion!!!

Unfortunately we went when they were busy waited 50 minutes until we asked where the food is. Fair enough they were busy & we got our food out in about 10 minutes after this (about how long it takes to cook what we ordered). Again unfortunately the quiche was advertised with roast potatoes so why did it arrive with 4 slices of sliced bread? quiche had 1 finely sliced quarter of broccoli in it (tight)? when we asked for roast potatoes "Chef" deep fat fried roast potatoes for approx 20 secs ( they came out cold & tasted of lard). Everything else was gorgeous if they employed a chef without attitude I think it would be perfect. Id rather be told they are to busy & to eat some where else than have an arrogant chef treat his customers in such an unprofessional manor

Expected better having read the reviews. Staff very pleasant but not well organised. Not enough menus for our party despite the venue being half empty. We were asked for our order before we got the menus. After a lengthy wait our meal arrived. I asked for my meal to be served without gravy but to no avail. Vegetables were well over cooked. My companions found the beef rather tough and the wine, an Italian Merlot was quite unpleasant. There should be no need to ask if we needed glasses for the water. Coffees were just left on a tray rather than being served to those taking them. Two hours for two courses is not acceptable. I did not complain at the time as I did not want to embarrass my family but I was generally disappointed.

I booked a night at The Red Lion while working close by this week. Booking on line was simple followed up with emails to confirm booking. Great location for visiting York.On arrival I was checked by a very pleasant member of staff, who showed me right to my room which was spotlessly clean and well decorated. Free wifi available, good connection in bar but a little week as was in about the farthest but one room from the bar.Had a smashing meal in the evening with excellent service and a very large and good serving of quality food. I had previously read a review stating the rooms were noisy form the main A59 road, well what do you expect its located close to a main road. The noise does go away after the evening rush hour clears and I certainly did have a delightful nights sleep in a comfortable bed with no noticeable traffic noise during the night.I would certainly stay again. Thanks for taking such good care of me during my stay.

Have stayed at this motel in the past, but new owners have brought this motel up to date with new furnishings which are much more comfortable, the pub restaurant food is of excellent standard, we found it was not the cheapest but would be hard pressed to find better Staff are very friendly and helpful, and nothing is too much trouble. The motel is situated about half mile away from a very good park and ride, with a bus every 10 minutes, and is much cheaper than parking in York. We were very impressed and will be making a return visit.
