Upon checking in to the hotel that this restaurant is part of we confirmed our dining arrangements for that evening. The receptionist said “we have noted that you are a vegetarian” which I thought was wonderful and (wrongly) anticipated they would cater for me, as having perused their online menu there was nothing suitable for vegetarians. Upon arriving for dinner I was handed the standard menu which did not contain one single dish suitable for a vegetarian. The waitress asked if I had any questions about the menu and I pointed out that there was nothing for me to eat. She said I could have the mushroom risotto, but it contained parmesan which is NOT suitable for vegetarians. She seemed bewildered, but in this day and age why should anyone working in catering know anything about alternative diets or allergies?! She hastily disappeared without comment and came back to ask if I ate fish (SIGH!) The chef then appeared and asked, very loudly, “are you the vegetarian?”, alerting all the other diners to the “fussy eater” in the corner. I found it quite embarrassing to be honest. He also asked me if I eat fish. I would expect a professional chef to know the difference between a vegetarian and pescatarian but alas he did not. I found it odd that people kept asking me if I liked fish as there were lots of fish dishes on the menu which I would have ordered if I DID eat fish. After some debate, during which I could feel myself becoming more and more embarrassed for wanting to eat something as simple as a dish without meat, it was agreed that the chef would make the carbonara linguine minus the chicken and bacon. The restaurant then charged us £1 more for the hassle of a chef NOT cooking something and NOT putting it in a dish!! My husband felt that the chef coming to see me was a great service, but in this day and age I cannot believe that there was nothing to choose from on the main menu, especially given that we had informed them (as requested) in advance that I am a vegetarian. To be honest the rest of the meal was marred by this, and the carbonara itself was very creamy and sickly. It had clearly been made with cream although carbonara is traditionally made with egg yolk. It was far too creamy to finish. To add insult to injury the waitress came out to check I was ok to eat peas... I cannot comment on the staff, service etc. because I don’t remember, I just recall wanting to leave and never go back. Even high street eateries like Las Iguanas, Zizzi, ASK Italia and more can cater extensively for vegetarians and vegans. I now no longer eat dairy or eggs so I dread to think what I would be offered now – bread?! I’m sure this review will be met with rolled eyes by people who are lucky enough to not require an alternative diet due to allergies or ethical choices but in this day and age every restaurant should be able to cater for us without embarrassing us, especially if informed months in advance. This was our anniversary meal and we were staying at the hotel. I expected more.

We stayed at a guesthouse opposite The Skerries (4Kt guesthouse), the owner recommend it to us, and how right he was. the dining room is stunning and is matched by the standard of the food. Very friendly staff, good choice of wines and great menu based around Orkney sourced food, terrific steak and having the Cullen skink was an outstanding choice, again both were recommended. Slightly more expensive than other places but on a different level.

We ate here on our first night in Edinburgh as we were staying in the Dunstane Hotel and it was perfect for our tired family. We tried haggis for the first time here and it was the best we had throughout our trip. All the food was good and the portions were generous which meant I ended up sharing dishes with my little kids as there was no children's menu (which seemed to be the norm in many of the restaurants we went to in Edinburgh). We particularly appreciated the service which was kind and tolerant with us and our tired kids despite the restaurant being on the quieter side and with most of the other customers being couples. The restaurant was very convenient for us since we were staying in the hotel but a little way out of the bustle of town so definitely for people looking for a quieter experience.

Outstanding steak burger second time around and a very large serve of good sticky date pudding the second. You won't go hungry and prices seemed very reasonable to me. Wines by the glass were not fantastic but that was my experience in this price range across Edinburgh. Lovely atmosphere in the dining room with hotel guests and some locals keeping it lively.

The smoked salmon with capers and whisky appetiser was very good, and the no-nonsense burger that followed no less so. The Orkney IPA and Dark Island brews available in bottles were very good ales to accompany the food and I finished with a very decent sticky toffee pudding. Not unreasonably priced at 42 GBP.

This is essentially a small, typical hotel restaurant with a very small menu. Our food was served by a lovely waitress, but was truly nothing more than standard. The salmon was bland and served in a boring way, and we were hard pressed to find a salad that wasn't coated, topped with a heavy meat or sauce. It's not a bad place, but certainly I wouldn't rank it beyond average

The setting of Skerries is lovely and it is conveniently close to Murrayfield stadium and Haymarket station. I was dining alone and didn't feel rushed or uncomfortable at all.The wine list was extensive and although the wines available by the glass were limited, those that were available went well with various dishes on the menu. There was also a wide selection of cocktails and whiskies.I started with scallops in a cauliflower and herb sauce - the scallops were huge and perfectly cooked and the sauce had a great taste and texture. For my main I had the battered haddock with chips and it was hands down the best fish and chips I have ever had. They weren't too greasy and the chips were wonderfully crisp on the outside while hot and fluffy on the inside.

We ate dinner here midweek with the baby. The restaurant is situated in The Dunstane, a boutique hotel that is done up beautifully. Skerries' decor itself is tasteful and luxurious. Each course was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Our server was friendly and happy to make suggestions. He was also very helpful with our baby, and gave us a larger table so we could accommodate all our baby luggage! The restaurant has high chairs and a baby changing table in the ladies' toilet. I didn't see a ramp or a disabled toilet anywhere, so it isn't easily accessible for those with wheelchairs or prams.

We had been looking forward to eating at Skerries for a long time. I often walk past the restaurant and liked the look of the building and the menu. We ate on Friday evening. It wasn't very busy. The atmosphere was good, the waiting staff were polite and service was fast. My boyfriend and I both had exceptionally good starters (the scallops special and the salmon pave). I ordered gnocci in gorgonzola sauce for main. The dish consisted of very nice gnocci, spinach and chopped walnuts smothered in a terrible cheese sauce that was far too strong. It was thick, pungent and the only way to accurately describe it is smelly feet! It actually burned in the mouth. Not just a strong cheese flavour but overpowering and disgusting. I do not have a delicate stomach, and enjoy strong flavours, but this sauce was clearly wrong. My boyfriend tasted it and agreed it was inedible, and the waiter when I complained to him commented that even from standing next to the table he could smell that my dish was unusually strong. He went to enquire with the chef as to what had gone wrong, and brought back the chef's comment: "It's gorgonzola" (!) This was quite insulting, suggesting I had ordered the wrong thing, rather than the chef having made a bad sauce. We were charged full price for the meal and received no apology or compensation of any sort. It was a real shame, because apart from my spoiled main course, the food and the experience were lovely. I would struggle to recommend Skerries after this experience, which is a real shame.

Although the menu had many tempting options, and specials, we wanted something simple so we went for the fish and chips. They do say that if you want to see how good a restaurant is, order something simple and not fancy, so you see how well they do the simple dishes. Well, this was the perfect fish and chips, with a very light batter, and lovely tartare sauce, plus tasty peas and wonderful thick and piping hot chips. Although it's in a hotel and set well back from the main road, we could see from our window seat that it was getting lots of walk-in customers, obviously locals, and that's a good sign. We'd definitely like to eat here again and sample some of the chef's more adventurous dishes. We can see why it gets rated so highly on TripAdvisor.

Close your eyes and imagine the dining room from Fawlty Towers. Now imagine a scene from the Walking Dead and you'll be close. Ate here on the last Saturday of the festival and it was deserted. One other couple in the dining room and everyone whispering. The two lads behind the bar had managed to knock out the sound system, which until then was playing cheesy 80s hits so I don't know which was worse, the music or the silence. Started with a Pims which in fairness was good and fairly priced, then it all went downhill. Shared a smoked salmon starter which was tiny. We both had steak (the sirloin special recommended over the rump). Tough, chewy, tasteless, half of it left on the plate. No one asked whether we liked it. Nice salad and onion rings. Really ordinary food, no excitement, no passion like something you'd cook yourself on a tired Friday night. I'm writing this two weeks later and can't even remember whether we had desert that's how memorable the whole experience was. I know sterling is strong at moment, but even allowing for that, 150 euro for canteen food including a bottle of house red. Must run the zombies are coming....

We stayed at The Dunstane for 2 nights, and enjoyed Skerries twice during our trip - once for breakfast, and the following night for dinner. The dining room itself is beautiful - high ceilings, good natural light and elegant decor. At breakfast, the area connected to the bar is laid out with continental-style, help yourself breakfast fare. You have the typical choices - cereals, fruit, yoghurt, cheese, croissants, some cold meats. All fresh, and very good. I believe the breakfast is priced at £10.95, which I think is a little steep for continental... but average considering these are hotel rates. Spring an extra £3 for the cookied breakfast, and you'll be upgraded to "Scottish Full" which includes sausages, bacon, haggis, black pudding, eggs to your liking, and options for smoked salmon. Definitely worth the upgrade. For dinner, we sampled the Orkney Chowder, mussels, and sea bass. All were very good, although I found the chowder to be a little rich (lots of butter and cream) and a little lacking in "lumps". My main experience with chowder has been from Galway, Ireland, where it tends to be a bit thicker, and chocked to the brim with seafood. In this case, there was no potato and a smaller scattering of seafood, which switched the emphasis to the broth -- a little too rich devoid of accompaniments. I overheard a neighbouring table mention that their risotto was very buttery too -- rich fare seems to be a theme! The chowder was advertised as "with bread", but we were served bread first, and not offered it with the soup. Granted, I could have asked for more at the time, but sort of felt I'd had my fill by then. The mussels were good, although to be fair it's pretty hard to get them wrong. Again, the broth was a little on the creamy side, but it had a nice flavour. I probably shouldn't have ordered *both* the chowder and the mussels together - it was essentially the same meal, but to a different ratio of seafood. Next time, I'd probably opt for a burger or steak. We were left a little card in our room that said "free dessert for liking us on Facebook" - we obliged and had the ice cream. At £5.50 regularly, I thought this was a little steep - there was nothing particularly stand out about it compared with ice cream we'd enjoyed in Edinburgh (mostly notably, Mary's Milk Bar.)Overall, a nice dining experience, although I do think there's some room for improvement. Firstly, it was a tad expensive - £15.95 for a relatively small plate of Mussels and £18.95 for a small sea bass made this squarely feel like "hotel pricing", and not necessarily somewhere we'd choose to come had we not been saying here.Secondly, service was a little hit and miss. We had 3 waiters throughout the meal, which felt a bit disjointed. When taking advantage of the Facebook offer, we were asked to show our phones "because the chef requested it" (?). Fair enough, but given that we could "unlike" as soon as we'd flashed our phones, surely it would be better to take this on faith when our billed topped £60 on other courses?Thirdly, it was "Monday night steak night", but we were not told about this. I think the offer is 2 for 1 on the rump (don't quote me). We only knew because a table near us ordered it after we'd ordered our food. I could have been tempted into a steak if I'd have known about the offer. Finally (and this is a minor gripe), the billing could be improved. Traditionally, charging to the room would mean getting a receipt to sign, and allowing us to offer a tip to the wait staff. Instead we were just told "that's been done for you". This is poor firstly because we don't know how much we've spent, and secondly because it makes for an awkward and public conversation for how we can tip for service. I was told adding that to my account was not possible, but "you could pay in cash". I didn't have any on me, and by the time I was next downstairs, one of the members of staff I'd spoken with about this was no longer around, so I wasn't able to tip. I should note that our servers were the same team who checked us in to the hotel, so it seems they have a small team who share roles, so I'm not really sure who we "owed" the tip to.Overall, I would recommend this restaurant if you happen to be staying in the hotel - the food is good, and the setting is very well presented. I probably wouldn't make a special trip otherwise - the food is a little pricey against comparable offers available centrally in Edinburgh.I would also like to note here that I've reviewed our stay the hotel separately, which was excellent throughout.

It was a Friday evening and even though we hadn't booked, the lady who greeted us went out her way to fit us in.Dinner was amazing! The chowder is the best I've ever tasted and our main meals of fish and chips and steak were excellent. My only disappointment was that we didn't leave any room to try a dessert. The staff were friendly, efficient and made us feel welcome.Highly recommended and we will return soon.

Love this restaurant for dinner with groups of friends, work colleagues, family and special occasions. Ideal for a romantic meal too.The food is superb, with bigh portions and a Scottish twist. They have a fantastic wine list and we began the night with a whiskey tasting at their Stane Bar.

This is part of the Dunstane hotel. It's a charming room, great atmosphere and great service from the hotel staff. We found the starters (scallops and duck salad) to be the best part of the meal. Mains lean towards largeish portions of beef, venison, and seafood. Since it's a hotel restaurant, it would be nice to have some lighter things on the menu. But overall, it's a nice dining experience.

Dusntane Hotel's chef is a master in the art of cooking fish, that's for sure , but his skills apply to the meat dishes too ! Excellent food! I highly recommend this restaurant.

They didn't rush you to order or between courses. The staff were very friendly. The starters and main courses were delicious. would recommend the scallops. The only downside for me was the desserts but it is definitely worth going to taste the starters and main courses.

Beautiful dining area which is part of the Dunstane Hotel. We stayed at the Dunstane and had an absolutely wonderful experience! The food at Skerries was not bad, but also not excellent based on the standards of the hotel and the price of the food. The service was friendly and the food hot, but somewhat bland.

I have now used this restaurant a number of times to entertain guests before the rugby and have never been disappointed. The food is excellent as is the service, and all just 10 minutes from Murrayfield.

I attended a farewell meal for 24 people at Skerries last week. Given the size of the party we were given a limited menu - 3 choices for each course - about 10 days before the event. The whole evening far exceeded my expectations- the feedback from the whole group was positive - I had the crayfish starter - the ling main - pear tarte desert - all good. The food was very good, well presented and the service was good too - impressive for a large group eating at 7:30pm on Friday night. I'd go back.

My partner and I went here for a Valentines meal. The service was fantastic, friendly and efficient and helpful, the food was amazing (in particular the black pudding and scallops starter which was the freshest and tastiest I've ever had!) and the dining room is spacious and nice. I would highly recommend, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service and will definitely go back!

Very good quality and imaginative menu. Not many choices but, in fact this turned out good because it made me try things that I wouldn't normally go for and they were very nice.

We had a lovely meal here and would recommend the food. I understand what other reviewers said about a certain lack of atmosphere but the service more than makes up for it.

The food was wonderful as was the service. We spent several hours at dinner eating and talking and were the last people in the restaurant. Not once did the staff act as if that were a problem. They acted happy to have us.

Looked at all the excellent reviews before booking a table on a Saturday night. Unfortunately I cannot agree with some of the reviews. There was no atmosphere in the dinning room with some empty tables. Service and staff were friendly and efficient. For starters two of us had scallops (2 scallops on the plate) very over priced. Two had the salmon selection ,both presentation and flavours were good. Main course, two had the lamb which was presented and tasted good. Two had fish, one had cod the other smoked haddock. Portions not very good. Vegatables were the biggest disappointment, tomato and onion in one dish and green beans and broccoli in another, both overpriced. Only two had desserts from a very small dessert menu. Overall experience overpriced, no atmosphere, friendly staff

We recommend the 'Dunstane Burger' - probably the best with local products we've ever experienced. (Dont' really thinks there's much to add, but the review must be at least 50 characters).

We were having a family reunion and my nephew selected Skerries Restaurant at the Dunstane Hotel where he had dined before. The restaurant, part of the hotel, is unpretentious from the outside but elegantly decorated and furnished inside. The restaurant room is not huge and a table down the centre of it had been arranged for the eleven of us. The menu is both breathtaking and mouth-watering, with an emphasis on Orcadian (from the Orkney Islands) dishes, and I found it more difficult than unusual to choose between a number of tempting dishes. Finally I chose the scallops to start and the monkfish with Savoy cabbage, chestnut mushrooms and celeriac with a side of green beans as my main (you can mix from the two menu options). First I have to say, the service was immaculate with all 11 starters and later all 11 mains being presented within minutes of each other. Every one of the dishes was beautifully and appetisingly presented. Both my starter and main were melt in the mouth delicious and everyone else agreed that theirs was the same, including the chef in our party. The service was friendly and attentive throughout the three or so hours while we were there and, while the price was quite expensive, it was well worth it for a fabulous meal.

We ate here whilst staying in the hotel and the food was lovely but the choice could have bigger; the menu was slightly small, everything we had was very tasty but one evening there was enough. The service was good but very slow in coming back to us with our drinks etc.Overall the restaurant is comfortable and convenient, with an excellent scotch choice and good food; if we stayed at the hotel again we would use it again for the above reason especially on the first night.

By far our best meal in Scotland was at Skerries. They pride themselves on Orkney-sourced food, and the fish and lovely fresh vegetables attest to it. The preparation was impeccable. A large painting of the standing stones of the Ring of Brodgar dominates the room. While we were there, they were featuring Highland Park scotch, a fine Orkney single-malt. Definitely recommended for after dinner. Breakfast was likewise exceptional, with very tasty black pudding, bacon, and creamy porridge (you can tell what I like!). Truly exceptional!

As a fan of Tom when it comes to the celebrity chef scene and local entrepreneur we knew we were set for a blast. But hey, there’s always room for a bad day at the office, well, last night was one of these days. Booked for some scran with the fam and as always we smacked few classy bevies couple of doors doon the road at the Blackbird. Stunning wee boozer. Rocked up for dinner and the place was pretty buzzing which is always good to see. Although it grabbed our attention that there wasn’t many members of staff that particular night, but we know how professional they are and expected nothing but a great culinary experience. Fun and games so we start teeing off with the munch; Mallard and haggis the only two things that were up to par. Ragu, cod , cesar salad, pātes and ribs not even close to the to quality you’d be thinking of a top tier gastro pub. Desserts were orite. Great Rioja. Birds at the front of the hoose weren’t coping at all but they put a lot of effort on it. We’ll be back

Couldn't fault our dinner with friends at Ducks. Friendly service, lovely atmosphere and incredible food. In particular I have to shout out the desert which featured a sea buckthorn sorbet - genius! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone.
