Sizzling Pub in York

What a gem and reasonable prices , food was cooked to order so always fresh and hot , staff were really helpful and friendly, especially kerry and Amy We were staying inthe Travel lodge next door and there's a connecting door to get inside , no faults on the 4 days we used it for our evening meal

Food and staff were excellent. Amy was extremely helpful with helping us get to know our way around. Reserved our table for the week. Paid attention to detail and very attentive to our requirements.

Decided to try this as i live near and there was a 40% of mains offer on. Looked like it had been busy as could not find a clean table so sat on a dirty one and waited to see if it would be cleared. Decided what we were eating and i queued up in one long queue. Then noticed someone else was serving further down the bar but just the people who were loitering at the bar even though one ordered food? Surely it should be a first come first served. One of the reasons i gave a star was 100% for the lovely, pleasant, helpful, polite , blonde haired young lady that served us ! (Student?) she was the best. Went back to the table 15 mins had past and the table still was not cleared all cleaned. There was a waitress storming around very fast with a really angry look on her face. I felt really reluctant to approach her and ask. The table was really dirty so i moved all the glasses and used tissues to the back located the cleaning spray that was left on the side and cleaned it myself. I felt pretty grubby after this, so went to the bathroom to wash my hands to find no soap in any of the dispensers in the bathroom. If there was no soap in both the dispensers this must have been for a while so how many people are using the toilets and spreading bacteria around 🤢. The meals arrived 1 x burger and chips and scampi and chips with a side of macaroni cheese. The lovely girl who had taken the order brought us our meal . The burger was average , had a few gristly and stringy bits in it. The scampi was fine but the mac n cheese was stodgy and tasted unpleasant so we left it. The lovely girl came and asked us our meal was and we witnessed her serving other people meals as well. My hands were sticky from the knife i was using , my elbows stock to the bar and the table . There were flies flying around. Unfortunately the Black Bull in my opinion needs a really deep clean , it feels grubby and dirty. There is no excuse to have every soap dispensers in the bathroom empty. Surely thats just basic daily checks as no way ‘both ‘ are emptied in a day. It is basic ‘value’ food . I have eaten here for a few years now but can honestly say the cleanliness standard has massively deteriorated. I am giving two stars for the fact the young lady was a credit to the pub and the food is passable and affordable. The affordability is equal to a similar pub chain a couple of miles away but the food and cleanliness in the other pub is much more superior. I will only return if standards improve.

Great staff. Shell served us, and was very funny and helpful, and brought our food and drinks very quickly. Would highly recommend.

In a few words. Fantastic, clean, great food and super service😃 sure to go there on my next trip to york. Location is good city centre is easy to travel to with park and ride bus every 10 minutes.

Nos alojamos por una noche en el Travelodge mientras estábamos en un hecho: encontramos una visita a la Uni con dos adolescentes. Habiendo llegado a las 8: 30 de la noche de un jueves, después de registrarnos, fuimos al pub a comer y rápidamente nos dimos cuenta de que era la noche del Concurso y que el lugar estaba lleno de equipos de estudiantes principalmente. Después de explicar en el bar que acabábamos de llegar después de un largo viaje y que esperábamos comer, el personal no podría haber sido más útil. El gerente (de servicio / bar) nos encontró una mesa enseguida que estaba bien para beber y podríamos haber comido, pero fue un poco apretado para cuatro. Cuando nuestra comida (bastante pronto) llegó, él y uno de los camareros se tomaron la molestia de decantarnos a otra mesa más grande al otro lado del pub que acababa de quedar vacante. ¡Excelente servicio al cliente! Fuimos a la mañana siguiente para desayunos que estaban bien cocinados, porciones generosas y muy buena relación calidad-precio.

Pidió la hamburguesa de pollo frito del sur, tomó un bocado y encontró un pelo! Me ofrecieron una comida fresca, pero me sentí tan disgustado que no quería comer nada más en el restaurante. Evitar asqueroso!

Came as a large party.It was very busy. Had a few issues with food order,but all dealt with well by very polite and helpful staff. Very good prices for food and drinks.

The Black Bull is part of the Travelodge and we needed a cheap and cheerful place to base ourselves for another visit to our son at York Uni. The Black Bull was both. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and made or two day stay really enjoyable. Big car park too, so we dumped the car (for free) and jumped on buses into the city.

Mi hijo vive en York por estar en la universidad, así que en una visita reciente fuimos a comer aquí, por el precio, pensé que era una comida de pub muy agradable. 2 tenían la lasaña y 2 tenían las hamburguesas (había unas pocas para elegir, así que no recuerdo cuáles tenían), ¡se veían increíbles! ! Still a local pub with a travelodge on the back. Staff nice food good and not to expensive. Bus stop just outside takes you straight into city centre

La única razón por la que sabían que la cocina estaba cerrada porque el personal de la cocina estaba en el bar y les dijo que todo estaba apagado. A las 1 y 10 minutos. No volveremos pronto.

My biggest disappointment is that there is not one of these places near where we live. We stayed in the Travelodge at the back for 3 nights and after the first meal here, there was no point in going anywhere else. The meals and staff were excellent, especially the waitress with the blue hair. Prices were really good too. I cannot recommend this highly enough. The staff could not do more for us, all so friendly and helpful.

Quick service at bar and not a long wait for food!

I've just read some negative reviews on this website. I don't think people realise how busy this place gets. When 20 or 30 people arrive all at once, there is bound to be a little wait, either for drinks or food. I've always found the staff to be polite and helpful, going above and beyond at times.The food is what is advertised, nothing more, nothing less,why expect Michelin star! It's always inviting, come and enjoy yourself, you'll soon see.

Been to the Black Bull over the last 3 nights whilst staying at the attached Travelodge. I found the staff very friendly and efficient. Whilst the pub was very busy and perhaps a touch noisy the food was well worth a small wait. It was good quality and served piping hot. A 2 meals deal is available but the main menu includes good value products, for example a mega mix grill was under £12 and includes steak, chicken, gammon and 3 sausages with chips etc (there is a smaller mixed grill for under £9 if you dont want to stretch your stomach). At their prices together with a 20% discount for AA members who go on the AA site for a voucher this pub was a no brainer for each of our meals. Well worth a visit.

So my friends and I went to Black Bull for a catch up and some good food. The food was pretty average and it seems the pub has gone downhill since staff members we knew and loved have left. (Rhymes with Bolly Mynn for our favourite staff member) We were sent a gift code in error and the staff were unpleasant about it when they told us it had expired. Do not come here if you like excessive barbecue sauce

Monday evening decided to eat here but wish we had not bothered!! Ordered a lamb kofta to start but did not end up been a starter it came with the main courses!! Garlic chicken was terrible 2 coated chicken breasts with garlic butter put on top the chicken had clearly been put in the fryer!! awful I just could not eat it and the salad that came with it was warm !! The BBQ chicken burger was dry and tasted of nothing! Its not expensive but lets be honest you pay for what you get!! This was terrible would ever return

Oh dear me this place has gone down hill drastically!! Never a landlord/landlady to be seen . Had family visit from London so popped up for some food and think they forgot to warm it up in the microwave.. my mother asked for a glass of wine to be told’ we don’t have any wine glasses’ the bar area was full of them,clearly to lazy to wash them , when my mum said she doesn’t want a glass of wine in a short glass the scruffy lady behind the bar calmly shrugged her shoulders as if to say tough ..Really poor service & bar staff rude and miserable. Get the place cleaned up and a glass washer !

We stayed nearby here for a family holiday. Went there for family meal one afternoon. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and well priced. only downside no real ales on. Plenty of other choices on keg though.

Just called in whilst doing Dad's taxi duties for a quick bite as it was also a case of Dad feed me!! Easy stuff nachos with chillie beef as a starter to share can't go wrong eh. Well maybe warm nachos but the beef was certainly chilly but not in a good way I think they forgot to microwave it and served straight from the fridge instead. The mains were edible but nowt to write home about. On the plus side the waitress was great we had a full refund for the starter without the usual fuss and she was very pleasant. Sorry that the guys in the kitchen let you down you were second to none.

Cheap prices for great portions. Both dishes ordered were good and tasty. Perfect for a meal not in the city centre but in a nice place and cozy atmosphere! Great variety of burgers, sizzling plates, vegetarian options and fantastic desserts.

Couldn’t be bothered cooking after hard work renovating an old semi so called in the Black Bull. As on previous visits it was busy and noisy. The music was so loud the waitress couldn’t hear me and we ended up a drink short, meaning another queue at the bar to get the missing drink. We were told to help ourselves to cutlery but they had run out of forks and we had to ask someone to fetch more from the dishwasher.

We decided to go to our local family pub and have a family meal while been able to watch the rugby league which we requested to be put on and was accepted. Then a couple of families came in and decided to put the jukebox on and all of a sudden the music was turned up quote a bit so we could hardly hear the rugby or each other talking. The family then decided it would be good to stand and dance on chairs and then kids followed which isn't what u expect from a sizzling pub and grill. We really like our sizzling pubs but won't be returning. We will be telling all our family and friends not to go to this pub in the future. Very disappointed.

We have been here for drinks a few times but decided to try their food as it had looked nice on previous visits. It was a very busy, sunny Friday evening but we managed to find a table and found lots of choice on the menu. We ordered the lasagne with garlic bread and the chicken skewers. Despite it being very busy, it arrived quite quickly with service with a smile and the food was delicious. Luckily we had time and room for dessert which were also marvelous. Reasonable prices and friendly staff, what a find.

Large menu of decent pub food, I've returned many times with no complaints. Great value and nice atmosphere. They offer 10% student discount which is always welcome. I'd recommend for a no-nonsense, good quality pub grub with a large menu (plenty of veggie/vegan choices also). Would like to see less stupidly small packets of ketchup/mayo/vinegar though, too much waste!

Visited mid afternoon after a couple of days in York.Have visited several times before & always been happy but today was exceptional!

Pedí un bistec y queso tarta, cuando llegó, fue difícil y quemado en el fondo. Me quejé y me dieron otra cosa que me gustó mucho, pero el problema era que este era exactamente la misma así que terminamos comiendo las patatas fritas y guisantes. Tuve un flan que estaba bien. El servicio era bastante rápido.

El sábado fuimos para té con mi hijo, que estaba en su camino de regreso a la uni. Pub, vasto menú, agradablemente sorprendidos por variedad de oferta. Teníamos 3 entradas por £9 que era excelente relación calidad-precio, cordero, madrás pakoras koftas pegajoso y alas de pollo, encantadora, platos principales fueron 2 un montón de hamburguesas y tuve el limón piri piri kebabs con patatas fritas de camote. Las porciones son muy generosas, disfruté de las patatas fritas de camote. Más tarde y pudines 2 una ronda de bebidas la factura era de £50, pensamos que una buena relación para tres adultos con hambre. Sin duda llamar de nuevo cuando nos están en la zona.

Recientemente nos alojamos en el Travelodge al lado de este pub, así que metimos en una copa por la noche y el sitio no está mal, el personal es agradable y nos ayudaron con la información sobre el transporte local, que era bueno. Teníamos el desayuno al día siguiente, desafortunadamente, pedí el bistec y huevos para reclamar mi bistec de tamaño y fue quemada, no puedo opinar a la camarera y me ofrecieron cambiar, pero yo estaba con un amigo, y queríamos comer juntos, así que acepté la comida, estaba bien aparte de eso.

Me alojé en el Travelodge adjunto al bar/restaurante. El personal era servicial y eficiente, pero en la primera noche tuve patatas crudas. Me trajeron un nuevo plato de patatas calientes, pero me dejó el resto de la comida. Por el momento el chips llegamos, me había comido el resto de la comida. Si había ido allí para comida familiar. No habría vuelto. Yo también presenció la otra madre e hijo después de una comida y la madre tuvo que enviar su comida como el pollo no habían sido debidamente preparado.

Llamamos aquí para un almuerzo tarde después de una visita al Museo al aire libre. Estaba bastante ocupado, y el bar donde nos sirvieron estaba muy pegajosa, pero nos sirvieron rápidamente, una buena selección de comida y un menú para niños. Éramos un grupo de cinco y cuatro de nosotros nos dieron nuestra comida, pero la camarera explicó que una de las comidas tenía que ser cocinada desde cero, como habían sido ocupados, pero que sería tan rápido como podrían ser, aunque para ver los tamaños de porción no era un problema como un montón de patatas fritas para picar mientras espera, aunque la espera fue de menos de 10 minutos. La comida era buena y abundante, el servicio amable, volvería otra vez.

Cheap in both senses of the word ;) But ok for a quick bite to eat. Noisy. Sticky. Tacky. Food was tasty though, and was very cheap.

Had a great meal here. Very ample portion. I had the Ultimate Catch. Well cooked and pleasant service. We were not rushed (though it was quiet when we visited). Couldn't manage a sweet after that first course. The place was clean and tidy too.

Greasy, tasteless and poor value for money. would be good value if the food was reasonable but as it's barely edible it isnt.

Its a bit of a does what it says on the tin. Good portion size. Great of your staying in the hotel behind and just want somwhere reasonable to eat with kids.

we ate here as it was next door to our hotel, it was quite busy, but the service was still very good and fast, all of our food came out quickly and was nice and hot and of good quality. we would definitely visit again.

La comida aquí fue épica! El personal fue maravilloso, muy amable, interactivos y servicial. La comida fue muy rápido, era cocinado a la perfección, y las porciones tenían el tamaño correcto.

When we came into the pub it was crowded and you couldn't hear anyone then it came to food and we waited approximately 1-1.5 hours.finally when it had arrived i found 3 fried peas in with my chips and my friend had a baked bean in her salad

We had two meals and two breakfast here, 1st night we had Grill for £6.49 very nice and dessert was backed vanilla cheesecake mmmmmmm and the wife had honeycomb explosion she love toffee sauce. 2rd night was Prawn cocktail for starters then Simply chicken a good meal and for the best part pudding was Chocolate fudge cake this was one desserts you needed room for. The staff were nice and maked you fel at home, i will be back

Lunch was very good. The staff were very friendly and chatted to everyone making you feel welcome. The kids loved the pudding of course, cookie sundaes.

This place is good for a drink and has a good selection of resonably priced wine etc.DO NOT eat here, it is truly awful and the food should be avoided at all costs.y

Terrible service, terrible food, terrible clients, terrible drinks. Its our local but it is truly shocking and so disappointing.
