A mixed review with overall disappointment. It saddens me to write this review as I have been a customer of Six by Nico since it's opening in Edinburgh and sampled at least 5 different previous menus. It's a fun concept with good value for money, hence returning so often. We were particularly looking forward to the Tokyo theme having visited Japan earlier this year. The food was really tasty and delivered a fun take on some classic Japanese dishes. Unfortunately, the poor service (from our assigned waitress) made rest of the experience a real let down. Our aperitif drinks didn't arrive, yet the table of four seated after us (served by the same waitress) received all their drinks before us. We were then served our second course (by someone else) before we had finished the first, and had to ask them and re-order our aperitifs. Our server had forgotten them and then resent our order to the bar; the cocktails eventually arrived later with the first wine pairing. Glasses used then often weren't cleared on time. We also asked our server twice for water refills during our meal and didn't get it - but noticed again the table next to us immediately got their water and drinks as soon as they asked. It wasn't until a different server arrived with our dessert course that we finally got some more water. We also had to ask for our final drinks to be brought with the dessert. The only time our server seemed to be doing things promptly was when they came to clear the fish course (while I was still eating) and when they presented the bill at the end of the evening. They seemed far more friendly and interested in attending to the other tables around us. I've never had this experience at Six by Nico and I really don't know why this was the case. Other customers seemed to have a much less rushed and more pleasant experience. We kept the service charge as the other staff we interacted with were polite and helpful. Unfortunately, I won't be returning soon as I think at this price point there are places where you will get good food, better service and a more enjoyable experience. I understand it was a really busy evening, but if the concept is to have a tasting menu with paired drinks, this should be the objective. Basic things like water refills and good customer service should be provided equally for all guests.

This was so disappointing, we have been to Six by Nico in Glasgow and this was such a bad experience compared to the Glasgow one. When we sat down we had to wait 15-20mins before anyone even spoke to us let alone offered us drinks. The 3 tables next to us who were seated after us had their first course before we even got our first drink. I’m not sure why our table seemed to have such a terrible wait time compared to everyone else. I can only assume our waiter was forgetting about us. The whole night we watched table after table get their food before us (which would be fine but these were tables that had been sat long after us). The worst part about all of this was that when we mentioned to our waiter that our food was taking a long time he didn’t even apologise or offer an explanation. The food was incredible when it eventually came, just it’s a shame when you decide to do something like this as a nice treat and end up having a bad time.

What a fantastic food experience! It was our second visit to Six by Nico in Edinburgh and our first time trying the Tokyo menu. Each course was beautifully presented and exploded with flavour. The mushroom and pork dishes where definitely the highlights of the menu absolutely exceptional cookery. It was Birthday celebrations so the glass of bubbles and wee card was a lovely personal touch really appreciated. Considering we couldn't get a table until 9.15pm and booked 3 weeks in advance the late dining didn't effect the food or service. Each dish was perfectly presented and explained by our waiter. Thanks again Six by Nico for another brilliant night!

We had the Tokyo menu which, whilst not quite anything authentically Japanese, was still an excellent and delicious selection of flavours that on occasion did remind me of the place itself. We were served by the charming and witty Gwen who was able to provide information on both the regular and vegetarian menu, and information about the wine pairings. For the price you pay, the experience is an absolute bargain, and I would recommend it to anybody visiting. Once you've eaten here, it's hard to recalibrate your taste buds back to normal and you'll find yourself wanting to visit again and again each time the menu changes!

Worst restaurant experience in half a decade in Edinburgh. Booked for a special occasion in advance. No-one to meet us upon our arrival at the restaurant. After 5 minutes of waiting and two waiters fully ignoring us, the hostess who was supposed to show us our table finally showed up, looked at me as I was looking for someone to help us and shoved me to the side. Then she just turned around saying a condescending "yes?" as if we weren't supposed to be here, forget about getting an apology. Reading other reviews this seems to be a repeated behaviour from that particular person, yet nothing seems to be done about it. Do yourself a favor, there are plenty of great restaurants just yards away on George Street for the same price or less with an actual service and experience. Most of all, stay away from Six by Nico.

Visited Six by Nico for their Tokyo menu and left quite puzzled. I’ve dined at the Hanover Street location in Edinburgh a few times and never left so disappointed. Six by Nico is known for its themed menus, and I expected to be transported to Tokyo through the food. As someone who appreciates the simplicity and craftsmanship of Japanese cuisine, I was excited to see what surprises this meal would bring. Unfortunately, it missed the mark. The meal began on a high note with Chicken Karaage—a well-prepared dish with a delicate flavor that didn’t overpower the meat, and a perfect crunch. However, the Tempura Enoki was served with mushroom pâté, mushroom purée, and mushroom ketchup—far too much mushroom for a cuisine that doesn’t lean heavily on them. The Kimchi Okonomiyaki was more of a tasteless mousse. If you’d told me it was a zucchini fritter, I’d have believed you. A real missed opportunity, especially with no katsuobushi topping. The ramen, literally meaning "noodles," had none. Instead, we got a sour soup that overpowered the fish, mushroom, and egg flavors. Tonkatsu was served with a laughably tiny square of cabbage. Oddly, there was also slow-cooked pork belly, which would’ve been better suited to the ramen, and a confusing "yakitori ham jam." The Strawberry Candy dessert was visually stunning, but the matcha moss didn’t taste of matcha—the fresh strawberries were the best part. Overall, the experience felt like a wasted opportunity. The quality ingredients and solid cooking didn’t take me anywhere near Japan. This menu could have been named after any city in the world, and no one would notice. To make things worse, we waited nearly 30 minutes to pay as our server was too busy chatting with other tables. The toilets were filthy, with one urinal half full and a plunger on the floor. It’s a shame that the fine dining experience I remember seems to have vanished, and no one seems to care.

When you charge top dollar prices and then don't take Amex cards, it makes you wonder where else they are skimping. Food was good, we'd contemplated coming here on a regular basis, until the penny pinching "We don't take Amex" policy was revealed. Nothing on their website to indicate their cheapskate take on life.

We visited Six By Nico at around 7pm on the 26th of August 2024. The food was tasty and high quality - exactly what you'd expect at a restaurant at this price point. Good food - not world beating, and definitely not the best in that part of Edinburgh, but decent food nonetheless. Our main concerns were around the service. We left the restaurant at 9:20pm after having the 6 course service. This meant an average wait of about 25 minutes between courses. The plates are small; you're able to eat one course in around 2/3 minutes, so that made the wait for the next course feel excruciatingly slow. There were a few occasions where the whole restaurant seemed to grind to a halt, with no tables visibly eating. Aside from the slow service, the waitress spilled a glass of Coke on someone at our table. We received an apology but no offer of discount or anything. When we received the bill we were over-charged by ~£40 as they had billed us for an extra person - so watch out for this. Make sure you double check everything on the receipt! After that, the service seemed to just fade out. There wasn't a happy/firm goodbye and send off - we were really just left to leave the table after we paid. We all felt as though after the waitress' blunders, and the late time of night that perhaps she just wanted to get home. Overall: Food: 7.5/10 Service: 2/10 Atmosphere: 5.5/10

Hello, we were absolutely thrilled. The concept of this restaurant is just right. We didn't have a reservation, we were there spontaneously. We were able to spend the waiting time (approx. 30 minutes) in the cocktail bar next door. A DJ played relaxed, trendy music and there were crazy cocktails. In the restaurant afterwards we were served very professionally, with a lot of information about all 6 courses, which tasted excellent. Conclusion: A must on every visit to Edinburgh!

Everyone raves about this place so I thought I’d give it a try. I thought the outside and inside a little grotty and a squash which I guess is offset by the low prices for a six course taster menu. The girl who showed us to our table was not there to meet us and was quite stroppy when we accidentally walked past the booking in -station. Our waiters were lovely though and informative. The food was ok but quite samey with too many creamy sauces on the Amalfi coast menu. Tasty though and easily enough to eat.

One of my favs for light fine-dining. Six by Nico offers six courses (hence the name). The first two are light appetizers, the middle three are dainty portions of main dishes and the final dish is dessert. They offer a regular course and a vegetarian option as well. They swap their menus every once in a while. Our theme was "Almafi Coast". I first tried the one in Aberdeen and loved it. Decided to try the one in edinburgh, and this restaurant was also fantastic. The food is plated exquisitely and the flavors are seamlessly cohesive. Service was great and each dish was described to us. Overall, a great place to check out. I'd definitely love to come back someday.

Affordable tasting menu, but ultimately a bit disappointing. The dessert course was a surprising highlight. We had the chippie menu with matched wines. The main disappointment was the wine. Not a single wine was to my taste, other than the primitivo (which likewise was rated a high 4.2 on vivino). However, despite being a good wine, the primitivo did not really match with the dessert (one is available for 4 EUR a bottle). On looking the wines up on vivino all others were lowly rated and very cheap bottles, as expected based on their quality. Some of the courses had fine-dining flair, but it was not consistent. I don't get out for meals much these days so will head somewhere more special for future meals. Baby change bathroom had no mirror while the men's toilets were very dimly lit (darker than the main restaurant).

This was my (slightly belated because adulting schedules are hard) birthday dinner, and the first time I'd ever done anything of this level. I can't deny I was a little bit daunted by the price just because I've never ever come close to spending this much on a meal, but I have to say I was absolutely blown away and it was absolutely worth it. First off - just to give a big thumbs up to the attentiveness of the SbN team, as I'd pointed out on my booking form that I have an aversion to tomatoes, and they were excellent in dealing with this, swapping out the tomato-based course on my menu for something equally good. I've been to restaurants whose idea of adjusting a menu like that would be to simply serve the same dish without the tomato in it, but SbN went an extra mile there. The service was excellent - we had multiple people at our table over the night checking in on us, but our main guy was (I believe - apologies if I've got this wrong!) Timothy, and he was very helpful and friendly. The food was, well, the best meal I've had in my life (yes, even better than my mum's mince and tatties), and both me and my wife were genuinely impressed and delighted by it. Again, the food was very different to what I'd usually have, even on an occasion dinner, but the skill was evident and the flavours went together so well. I think I could have eaten the smoked onion emulsion (I think? I'm not great with the technical terms, sorry!) which came with the trio of pork as if it were a sorbet, it was so delicious, and that was just one small component. I've attached some distinctly amateur photos (I'm no influencer!) to give an idea, but they don't really do the experience justice. I don't drink, but my wife had the paired wines and thoroughly enjoyed herself with those too - each patiently explained to her upon delivery to the table - and although she's not a big drinker, the serving sizes were just right to not be too much. So yes, it's expensive (especially by my standards), but I have to say it was absolutely worth it on every level, and I hope I can find a chance to come back again in the future to try something else. The new "Trust" menu sounds fascinating. The only tiny (genuinely tiny) feedback I would give is that the restaurant is quite noisy, and the servers were quite softly spoken, so I had to strain to hear sometimes. They were always very nice about repeating, but feel free to shout toward me if I'm ever in again! :)

Had lunch with my husband at Six by Nico Edinburgh to celebrate our Anniversary. Our tasting Menu was ‘Trust’ where you are given a blank menu and have to guess the ingredients contained in each course. The food was based on the childhood experiences of the Danish Head Chef and every course was presented with great attention to detail as you would expect from Six. John, our waiter provided us with exceptional service, extending the intrigue of the ‘Trust’ concept throughout the meal. We have been to the branch on at least eight previous occasions, but this was by far our favourite concept as we were encouraged to really examine the flavours in the food, not just taste it. Our Anniversary was thoughtfully celebrated with a glass of fizz & a Six by Nico card, making this a memorable experience for both of us. As we thought today was the Amalfi Coast menu we will just have to return to sample that menu. Many thanks to all staff but particularly John & the Chefs who produced incredibly creative & delicious food - it’s a 10 from us 🤩 We’ll be back soon!

Jack told us all about each dish and Kaludia even went as far as messaging Head Office for the Songs By Nico playlist when I complimented the music. We had a 'New York' set menu dinner for 2. If in short, I would not recommend this place. Below I added comments amount atmosphere, service and current set menu. Service: When booked initially I specified that one of the fish meals needs to be replaced with veggiterian option. Then I reminded this at the entrance when greeted. Then I reminded this to the waiter and then we eventually got served 2 vegetarian options 🤷🏻 Also, we ordered one type of cocktails and that was mixed up as well. and waiters when serving dishes mumbled everything extra fast with zero enthusiasm and were running off. Overall, not much joy really from the process. Atmosphere: Usually I would expect somewhat elegant, quiet and calm atmosphere in places like this. However, it was quite crowded, very little space, quite noisy to the extend that it was hard to hear each, not much different from going to a regular pub. So focusing on enjoying the company of your partner/date and food was challenging. Food: Course 1 - Pepperoni Ragù, Panzanella, Parmesan Foam There was so much parmesan foam that it was overtaking any other tastes and apart from intense parmesan it was hard to taste anything else. And serving was not very elegant, just everything put in small bowl. Course 2 - B.E.C – Bacon, Egg & Cheese Smoked Bacon Belly, Confit Egg Yolk & Trapanese ‘Hot Sauce’ This course was just dissapointing and mediocre. it's a kind of an English breakfast served for dinner and nicely put on a plate. Course 3 - Pastrami Sandwich - Ox ‘Pastrami Sandwich’, Choucroute, Pickled Kohlrabi, Battered Gherkin, Frenchies Emulsion Pastrami was nice. Choucrouteand was such a small piece with such a mild taste, that it was hard to pick up the taste of ot. Pickled Kohlrabi and Gherkins were almost like as if I bought them at Lidl. Overall, not impressed, usual pastrami sandwich tastes better. Course 4 - The Everything Bagel - Grenobloise Coalfish, Salt Baked Celeriac, Wild Garlic, Caper & Lemon Dressing This was a nice and interesting set of combinations. Course 5 “Double Chicken Please” Buttermilk Chicken, Hot Honey Sauce, Jalapeno Ketchup, Thai Basil & Hazelnut Pesto 3 different sauces with a little piece of chicken. Simply put, you don't have enough chicken to enjoy all the sauces, and if you mix them, it's a mess. I guess this was just a bad combination. but separately, everything tasted alright. Course 6 - Lower East Side Apple Pie Baked Apple Creme, New York Cheesecake Sorbet, Dulce De Leche, Cookies & Cream Crumble This was okay. Basically diconstructed cheesecake. Looked pleasant for the eye, but nothing extraordinary. So, overall, if you seek an interesting food experience I would recommend to pick another place, like dinner at 'Aizle' for example or lunch at 'The kitchin'. It will be an extra £20, but at least you will have an actual unique and interesting experience, with caring service and relaxing atmosphere. If it's your first time trying a set tasting menu, well, I'm worried that this place might leave so so impression and felling that this experience is not worth the money. Well, considering that I left £140 for a dinner for 2 + 2 drinks each + Service charge, I left with a strong feeling that there are enough places in Edi where I could have had a better dinner for less. and no wonder this place is not mentioned in Michelin Guide 🤷🏻 'miser pays twice' as they say, and guess that was me this time.

The wines were instantly forgettable and didn't enhance and occasionally jarred with the courses. The new york slice didn't go well with the overwhelming cookie, the BEC was a mess on the plate, I was most excited about the pastrami but it was bland and oily. Everything bagel was standout but capers were mostly vinegar and chilled and didn't sell well in the dish. The chicken was dry and don't remember much else about it. Lobster roll was very greasy, Apple pie was exciting but looked horrible on the plate. After hearing good things about this restaurant we were both avidly excited. However on receiving our set meals we were both extremely disappointed. Food was not that great, the taste was bland and portions were absolutely tiny for the price you are paying. This type of restaurant is not for people with good taste just to much to spend. I could not fault the staff they were great. The couple sat next to us after receiving their meal stated they were going for a chippy afterwards- that they would also most likely enjoy the chippy more than this experience. Despite having a 70 pound voucher this ridiculously priced establishment cost us well over 130 pound for the crumbs of a meal and a few drinks. AVOID- there is so much better places in Edinburgh that are far more value for money.

My partner and I went for a very special anniversary after eyeing it up for a while. As 2 experienced foodies we were very excited to try given the hype and opted for the Newyork themed menu. After the first bite we knew we had made a big mistake as it tasted like it had been prepared years in advance giving it a cold, stale and defrosted taste. It did not taste like food at all more like a mouldy car tire. The service was very poor, waiters had dirt in their nails and were coming mm away from the food with them, basic hygiene standards were not met. We were seated in the back which was incredibly smelly and noisy, we couldn’t hear each other speak never mind the waiter. We had to leave half way through as we could simply not stomach anymore. I would avoid at all costs and recommend opting for other restaurants nearby such as tipo, where the staff go above and beyond, the food is way better and the prices more reasonable.

The hot chocolate was ultimately not of the utmost quality, albeit this can be excused to a degree due to hot chocolate presumably not being a common order - the temperature was middling, not quite hot enough for my taste, it was perhaps a touch rich, the drink overall being somewhat bitter, and the consistency wasn't incredible, a little grainy. 3/10

Not sure why I can’t add another review here but had another great night out here again at the Hanoi set menu. Staff are brilliant as usual. Food as well was great as usual, particularly enjoyed the optional extra at course 5 the tempura prawns. Will be back for the New York menu. . Again back to six by nicos for the first taste of the best if 2023. As expected the service, presentation and food was very good at a great price for what you get. My only complaint was that the first course from the classic menu chicken karaage and the 5th course what came first… was a little to salty for me. My favourite course was Branzino course 4 the sea bass it all went so well together along with the last course Crèma catalana. We will be back again.

A very poor start to the evening, met by a rude and miserable hostess our table wasn’t ready no apology from her, nowhere to wait for your table, you need to leave the restaurant. No apology when we returned either, she didn’t smile once throughout our entire stay. Our waitress was Faith, she was happy and attentive and did her best to make our evening enjoyable . However the courses were rushed and the members of our party that were having the wine pairing didn’t have time to finish their glasses before the next ones arrived. The food was very average and generally cold. Insult to injury a 12.5% service charge automatically added to your bill . We were there to celebrate our daughter’s 18th Birthday, however the whole experience ruined what should have been a memorable meal. We will not be back

The experience was so disappointing, the hostess was rude, despite our table not being ready, she was cold, unapologetic and expected us to go and wait elsewhere but expected us back in 10 minutes not a minute longer. No apology despite us leaving and coming back, still no welcome, an embarrassment to the establishment. The experience was salvaged by the waitress, Faith, even she could not save the cold food being served within 5 mins of each course. Did not even manage to finish the wine before the next course arrived and then to add further insult, we were told to vacate our table for the next sitting despite being seated late for our reservation. Despite making it clear on the reservation and telling the waitress that one of the party had a severe nut allergy, we were still given pesto, luckily we were able to catch this being eaten. Not the level of service you would expect in this current climate. They are clearly too busy to care. Do not waste your money. This is a conveyor belt where the team are unable to treat you as a respected guest. £300 for 4 people is not value for money when the food is cold and the welcome was even colder.

We had a voucher to use and were really excited to try the Hanoi menu. Overall the food was very tasty but the whole experience felt very rushed. There was a different person at our table every 5 mins and it interrupted the flow of our meal and where our table was it felt like a very congested area with staff running around us so it wasn’t particularly relaxing. The wine pairings were actually really good (apart from the low alcohol fizzy Ribena wine at the end and the fizzy wine at the start). Not sure what the % service charge they added on was but we paid for the food and wine pairing with a gift voucher and we still had to pay £28 for one drink and a tip - fair enough the staff deserve a tip but it felt a bit much. The individual who appeared to be the manager did not look like he was particularly kind to his staff, we noticed him on several occasions behaving quite poorly towards the serving team. Overall, for chain restaurant fine dining it was a good experience and the price point is certainly accesible for more people than most fine dining restaurants. We wouldn’t choose to come back here as there are so many other places we would come to first and it did feel very rushed.

Went to the "Six by Nico - Edinburgh" last Sunday night for middle evening sitting. Menu "Hanoi". All I can say was food was superb, hot & delicious. You can also flip between the Normal Menu & the Vegetable Menu, depending if you have a problem eating fish or meat or any other item on one of the courses. Course 5: Gòi Xoài - Tamarind Glazed Chicken, Sweet Potato Hash, Crispy Chicken Leg & Burnt Mango puree. Good dish, but Crispy Chicken Leg was sublime. Though they all seem small portion, you come out full and satisfied. Staff service was excellent as usual. Recommend, especially this menu.

Disappointing! Lukewarm tasteless food, poor, slow service and mediocre surroundings. Whatever you do don’t be early- you’ll be made to stand by the door until it’s your turn to sit. In our case that was 30 minutes! Added two drinks, a coffee and two small starters and ended up paying an additional £80, including a £20 service charge. Honestly won’t be back, the food was uninspiring, bland and for the most part, lukewarm at best. Only saving grace was the wine pairings which were excellent. Look at the rankings- there are literally hundreds of better places to eat than this which would cost you half as much!

The food was outstanding and the staff very friendly. No buts there. What I found very odd is that when they bring you the bill they inform you that they charged + £1 per person as a donation for a charity and that it's not obligatory, cheeky sods. I mean, it's £1 per person and that's probably why it looks absurd to subtract it from the bill if you don't agree to pay it. I just don't think that's the way or place of doing it. Never seen any restaurant do this before, it's just not on. I kindly asked for them to remove that charge, and the charge of 2 extra drinks that they added by mistake.

I took my best friend here for a tasting menu with a gift card as a birthday treat. If you look at the review below, we were the ‘late’ couple in Edinburgh. In actual fact, we were only a few mins late after our 4:45 booking and had to wait in a queue for ten minutes. As others have mentioned, the waiting area in the foyer is tiny and you have to wait outside until a space is available to enter the restaurant. The front of house was nowhere to be seen during our wait. Once inside, we were seated at the booth next to the front door. We were waiting for ten minutes before being attended to and the waitress took our order from memory, we weren’t convinced that she had processed everything. We had to ask a few times for water and a wine menu. Our first course arrived before our drinks and we had to ask yet again. My water glass had lipstick stains on it and the aperitif drinks were were sickly and warm with no ice. The food itself was beautiful however the main course of pork was mostly fatty as others have mentioned. As feared, our extra of BBQ ribs had been forgotten about - we were advised that we could wait ten minutes for this with no real apology. As a frequent Nico’s customer, I was fairly disappointed. I was aware of the conveyor style plating up for the next sitting as we finished our meal. Starters were piled up for the next customers on the pass as we were waiting for our desserts which were frozen solid. It felt as though the servers were trying their hardest however the volume of customers at the sitting was excessive with the available staff. Such a shame that volume appears to be valued above the experience.

I visited here as I had bought a voucher for myself and daughter as a Christmas treat. Other family members had been before and raved about their experience. We arrived 5 minutes before our booking time and joined a large outdoor queue. The couple before us were offered a choice of 3 tables When the same person came to greet as I asked if we could have an internal table or the booth that the previous couple has been offered and turned down. I was then told that this was not an option and we were seated as a very small table opposite the entrance door. This meant that we were so close to the next table that we could hear their whole conversation, to make matters worse the party of 2 behind us was then offered the booth that we had been told we could not have! When I questioned this I was told that this couple arrived late and would be leaving early so was given the booth. Also that they would find us a table away from the draughty door, this did not happen and the host made no contact with us again! In reality the couple who arrive late left after us and no party of 4 arrived at 7 pm so this was very clearly untrue. This was not a great start to the evening and he obviously was not a very people person (or at least not to us). Thank goodness we had our lovely server Faith who made up for this. She was charming , helpful and knowledgable , although rushed off her feet while trying to assist some of her colleagues who were unsure of the courses being served. Had it not been for her service l would have marked our visit even lower. The food was well presented and tasty for the most , we had the vegetarian version and the only course we did not enjoy was the jackfruit which was very chewy with a strange aftertaste. Would I visit again…. I’m not sure , we felt very rushed getting seated about 15 minutes late and then only given 1 hour 45 to eat and leave, the experience given to us by the initial host was very unpleasant. On a positive we made the best of it and our sever was lovely and apologetic when we ordered coffees but advised that we would have to drink very quickly as she needed the table emptied. Not pleasant for her to have to say and frustrating we arrived well before our booking time which should have allowed 2 hours to eat and have a coffee. If you are thinking of visiting six by nico maybe research the branch you are visiting in advance to make you are going to get the best experience.

We had a fantastic time at Six by Nico, it was our first time and we will definitely come back! As we were celebrating my husband's birthday we also took the matching wines, which were all very carefully selected and even if some were not to my taste, it was fantastic to discover new favourites. Our waitress was really knowledgeable and enthusiastic which made the experience very enjoyable. The food was very creative and the fun fair menu is really well thought through with lots of great flavours. The reasons why I didn't give a 5 star review is because going through 6 glasses of wine (we had an additional drink on top of the 5 glasses included in the matching wines) was a lot and being someone who likes drinking slowly I felt rushed, having to finish before the next course arrived. The service was also quite fast and I felt there was not enough time to breathe between courses, and fully enjoy the experience apart from before dessert which came a bit later and that was much appreciated! We stayed around 2 hours and it went so quickly, I would have enjoyed a little more time to fully appreciate the experience. A couple of plates also looked a little messy, which I put down to the fast service. We will definitely come back but this time won't take matching wines and take our time with drinking and hopefully we will be able to taste more and enjoy the excellent quality of ingredients, great wines and lovely environment.

It is sad to see the decline in Six by Nico. This was our second visit with the first being a few years ago. This time around, it was clear to see that standards have slipped. On arriving, there was a queue to get in and, as only 2 people can fit in the foyer at a time, everyone had to stand outside in the cold. If you don't book well in advance, you will be extremely limited on time slots available. We had 9pm on a Sunday evening in February so you can imagine, it was cold outside! The front of house waiter seated us and was friendly and polite. Our server then came over to ask if we wanted water. It is quite loud in the restaurant and hard to hear what they are saying. After I said I did not want water, she left. When she came back, she got our drinks order but we waited a good 10 mins on the drinks to arrive with the first course coming before we got them. The glasses were not clean, the water glass my partner was given had a lipstick mark on it. All of the glasses, cutlery and plates smelled like dirty dishwasher which was extremely off putting when trying to enjoy a meal. The food was served quite slow and you could see the dishes waiting in the open kitchen with the Chef having to call service several times. Staff explain the course to you which is hard to hear given how loud it is and a bit overkill as the menu explains it all. It would be nice to be given the option to skip this part if you are happy just reading the menu. A couple of times, not just our table but others as well, their next course was served before fresh cutlery had been given leaving people waiting to eat their food. The food was okay but nothing special and, in my opinion, not worth £40 per person for what you get. Some of the food was not good quality. The Pork course contained a lot of fatty beef with the pork belly being 100% fat. It is naturally a fattier cut but should still contain some meat % Drinks are also super expensive with a small diet coke coming in at over £3!! When we asked for the bill, we waited 10+ mins for this despite others around asking after us, paying and leaving the restaurant before we even had the bill. The restaurant itself is compact with the tables being squashed in to allow a maximum number of people into the small space. We were seated at a corner table around a square table but were not able to sit directly across from each other, we were placed at either side of the corner on bench seating which I found to be extremely weird. It feels like the whole franchise is expanding and standard are slipping. It was an okay meal but we were still pretty hungry afterwards so definitely not value for money especially considering there are some all you can eat places in the same location offering much better quality for the same price. We won't be rushing back and certainly no longer recommend Six by Nico.

I was very excited to sample the set lunch menu at the Palmerston. Unfortunately, it did NOT live to expectations. The first course was 1/2 of an egg with 1 tablespoon of shredded cabbage/celeriac with mayo very poor and the second course was tagliatelle pasta ragu. The ragu lack in flavour and depth, my Italian grandmother would have been devastated. So we paid £21 for 2 courses and it was very unsatisfying. I wish we have gone to a different restaurant in Edinburgh, a pub meal would have been much more enjoyable. Maybe the a La carte is good but because the set menu was so poor that it is very off putting 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Cozy, tucked away, and just what I needed at midnight after a long day of travel. Service is quick and efficient, food is ready in minutes. If you choose to stay or to takeaway, they keep it easy. The pizzas are all one size, and are probably best described as “person” pizzas, although if you added sides it could be split by two less than starving people. Didn’t try their pasta, but will be back to do so!
