We had pre-booked an evening meal for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary while staying at the Old Waverley Hotel. I had requested a table with a view if possible and we had a corner table in the window with a view of Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Memorial. There is a fixed price menu (3 courses for £24.95) with about 4 choices for each course. My husband & I both had the same choices: Garlic Chilli King Prawn Bruschetta served with rustic bread, tomato, basil, salsa, mix leaves & lemon wedge Chicken Prosciutto on a bed of creamed potatoes with mixed vegetables Scottish Cheese Platter served with chutney, cheese biscuits & grapes We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the food was well presented and tasty, and the service was efficient and friendly. We enjoyed our breakfasts as well, tea & coffee brought to the table and the hot/cold buffet with cooked breakfast (including haggis), choice of juices, toast, cereals, yogurt, fruit compote, fresh fruit and croissants.

I came here with my family as it was across the street from the winter carnival near my hotel. It was cold and we were desperate for food so we chose this as it was the closest restaurant available. When we entered, there was only one waiter, and he was relatively friendly. So once we got seated at the table the first thing we noticed were these small decorations on the table, which you can open and you are given a paper crown, a joke, and a useless fact. Moving on to the food, there wasn't much to order on the restaurant menu, and for some reason there was more food in the bar menu than the restaurant menu. The prices were also above average however the food portions definitely made up for it. (My family couldn't finish our individual meals) But while the portions were large, the food was only average. There is one major issue with this restaurant though - it is that we waited over an hour for our main course. We almost fell asleep at the table for waiting for so long. There were only about 4 tables, and 2 of those tables had already started eating by the time my family ordered our food. We were also given bread, however it was dry, tasteless, and stale. Seeds on top of my piece of bread were falling all over the table, plate, and I'm sure some even fell onto the floor. However, from my personal experience, ignoring my family, my meal wasn't too bad, but it wasn't very good either. I had ordered a beef pie, and the beef inside the pie was so hot that even after 5 minutes of waiting for the food to cool down I still burnt my tongue on the beef. Although this restaurant isn't the best restaurant, it does its job as a restaurant and delivers food with a relatively friendly staff.

First time we had dined here, meeting and old friend back in my home town of Edinburgh. Restaurant well situated with views of castle and Walter Scott Monument. Table excellent. Dining room, with original features and superb cornicing, relatively quiet so got a good table by window. Service excellent. Staff could not have been nicer. Food traditional Christmas meal. Good portion sizes. This experience was suited to an older client group, but for an authentic traditional Edinburgh experience, it was second to none and good value. We will definitely return. Highly recommended.

My teenage son and his two friends reserved a table at Cranston’s on Saturday the 7th and traveled down to Edinburgh at considerable expense. Having arrived, they were met by one of the staff who simply refused to let them in. The man in question was extremely rude and showed completely unacceptable behaviour refusing entry and telling my son that he was not interested in “playing games”. My son explained that he placed a reservation but the man continued to be rude so the three left to eat elsewhere, frustrated and upset. We are still unclear as to the real reason as to why they were not admitted and felt it was nothing more than discrimination against young adults; which I find disgusting. On returning home I phoned the restaurant and spoke to 2 gentlemen who both told me they were the manager. I relayed the incident to them, both stated that neither had been on duty yet neither sought to apologise. Both managers said they would call me back before Monday evening - neither did - Avoid this restaurant - not because of the food but because of how disgustingly rude the staff are .... Peter

On positives, my steak was cooked perfectly and the waitress was lovely. I really didn’t realise there were still such old fashioned places. Food generally poor, under cooked swede mixed with overcooked pork and green peppers, not a combination I have experienced. Creamy whiskey sauce, nowadays, honestly. Industrial cheeses. Great view, all be it with no atmosphere. Cheap and cheerful but if this is the aim, there are better, more “with it” chain options and that is a disappointment. Somebody needs to rattle the cage and put this great site on the map for all the right reasons. Currently whoever owns this is a disgrace to the staff working for them.

We travelled to Edinburgh on a steam special. We didn't have a lot of time in Edinburgh so chose a restaurant near Waverley Station. First impressions weren't brilliant - the restaurant is in the Old Waverley Hotel, slightly old fashioned - and for some reason the staff wanted to seat us in the bar even though we'd booked. Perhaps because it was almost 2 pm when we arrived. The food, though, was superb. I started with refreshing melon slices with fruit; my husband had a substantial helping of smoked salmon. We both ordered swordfish, they'd run out so offered salmon or haddock. Both were delicious, with perfectly cooked veg. Excellent coffee, and 2 courses for £9.95 - with good views of the Scoot monument too.

I have lived in Edinburgh for almost 30 years and only found this restaurant in the Old Waverley Hotel last year. It is a hidden gem! Cranstons is on the 1st floor corner with fab views over Princes street. About half full when we went for lunch but felt very relaxing as no pressure to vacate table. Fixed price lunch menu is very good value and though the choice is not huge, the 2 meals I have had here were excellent. As a recently diagnosed Coeliac I had emailed before hand to inform chef I needed gluten free meal and was appreciative of being given a menu which clearly showed GF items and chef also gave me a different sauce with my chicken and the GF bread was very nice too. Only criticism would be dessert limited to cheese for me but this is not unusual in many restaurants.

Visited Friday evening. There were no other dinners except us (which should have been a warning!) therefore no atmosphere and we were in and out in 45 minutes and the food was average at best (The side order of 'chips' we're in fact frozen fries, which arrived 5 minutes after receiving our meal after having to remind the waiter). We were taken to the restaurant by someone from the front desk and told to 'sit down' before he swiftly left. Throughout the entire meal the single waiter created some background music in the form of the din he was making from clearing crockery and cutlery from other tables presumably in preparation for breakfast, this just sealed our fear that there was obviously going to be no other dinners attending. Would definitely not recommend and won't be returning. Disappointed!

This is the restaurant of the Waverley Hotel on Princes St, and both are accessed by stairs from a door at ground level (there is a lift). The restaurant is on the first floor, occupying the corner facing Princes St and the famous Jenners department store (House of Fraser). We booked here for 8.30pm on the last night of the Festival, when there is a big firework display at 9.30 in Princes St gardens. We hoped to be given a table with a good view. When we arrived we had a drink in the bar and said we were eating in the restaurant. It was all rather quiet and I was a bit puzzled that we were not asked for our names. We were shown into the restaurant and given the prime corner table with just the view we wanted. They didn't need our names as we were the only couple that had booked - we ate in solitary splendour! The menu was quite OK - we both chose duck, and from the size of the portions, the chef obviously decided to hand out all that he had prepared between the two of us. He knew no-one else was coming. The view of the fireworks was excellent, but the display goes on for a long time, and with tables for breakfast being set all around us we eventually felt we ought to settle the bill and go before the end of the display (though we saw the rest from Princes St, which was not as crowded as we expected). So the meal was OK, reasonable value, but there was no atmosphere and the staff were obviously keen to go by 10pm. Not sure why it was so empty - presumably there were a good few guests in the hotel, but the only ones we saw were finishing their meal as we arrived.

Having a couple of hours to spare before getting the train, I decided that I would try this restaurant as I had stayed earlier in the year at the hotel. The previous time it had been fine: super room and good though ordinary, English breakfast. This time I went for dinner and was bitterly disappointed. I had a cauliflower soup which could have been any vegetable, it was so tasteless; steak which attracted a £3.50 supplement and which was tough, and served with chips, a whole roasted tomato and red wine jus. I told the waiter that it was tough but he wasn't interested. The whole menu is boring and for the price of £25.45, plus drinks which were of a normal price, I felt really cheated. It was way below the standard I would have expected and I could have made this at home for £5, so very overpriced.I have written twice to complain to the managerial staff but have still not had the courtesy of a reply, not good.Front of house staff in reception is superb, their managers need to learn from them.Sorry, will never eat here again as I could have walked a little further and had a good meal for much less.

We were seated at window overlooking Scott monument. Fabulous view - prime people watching position. We ate from a set menu - 3 courses incl half bottle of wine for ,'£15.95. Warmed bread rolls and a carafe of water arrived while we waited. This really is tremendous value for money. As my husband put it .- he paid that amount for a soft drink and meal in Nandos. Michael, our waiter kindly provided complimentary soft drinks and we must stress that he looked after us extremely well throughout giving him full marks. If only everything else had matched his performance. 45 long minutes after we arrived we were finally served with our order. Decaf coffee came in a sachet with a pot of boiling water - unacceptable. Sandwiches were tasty but meagre. It would appear that each visitor receives half a round of sandwiches. One cake each from a choice of three was ok but the strawberry tart fell to pieces as soon as it was lifted. one scone each with clotted cream and preserves. The menu looked good and was really cheap for the city centre in Edinburgh. We ordered a main course which took exactly 35 minutes to arrive. The meal was very nice, one chicken in wine sauce served with mash and ratatouille and one haddock with roast potatoes, courgettes and brocolli. A nice bottle of pinot grigio and one sticky toffee pudding and a huge plate of biscuits and 3 cheeses served with home made chutney. We were also disappointed in the menu which had 4 starters and 5 mains for £25 pp. The choice was rather underwhelming and we decided to eat from the bar men which was much more reasonably priced and a better choice. We both had the soup and the fish and fries which were very nice and would certainly have again, however the old fashioned décor would certainly put us off returning.

We dined here on a Monday evening and for the most part of our meal were the only diners which is a real shame as the quality of food on offer and picturesque location really deserve better. A set menu of 5 starters/Mains/desserts is somewhat limited but the choices are simple and not fussy but well prepared and delicious . At £20 for two courses or £23 for three it was at a standard that was above the price and you can't ask for much more than that ! My 1 criticism would be that as we were the only diners the service was rather erratic as the three staff on duty would just disappear for quite long periods , when they were there they were attentive and friendly though . I would recommend a visit just for the sticky toffee pudding alone!

Had lunch in the bar, lovely room ith stunning views of Princes Street. Sandwiches were better than we expected, and resonably priced, Chicken burger was a full breast of chicken, well cooked and presented. A good choice for somewhere to take a break from the shops and have lunch.

Excellent food with an imaginative flair. A pleasant suprise for a 3 star hotel. Try and get a window table and look out onto Princes Street, the park and up to the old town whilst you eat.

Beautifully presented food, good taste and very polite - but a little confused - waitress. All in all a very good experience and value. Our rooms was also of high standard for the price and compared to nearby competition.

Came here for set menu lunch. The quality of the food was excellent and great value for money. Lovely setting and great service. Restaurant was quiet but probably reflective due to time of year. Will definately be back and would recomment to anyone.

We went here to celebrate our anniversary-big mistake! The food was terrible, very poorly presented and just not what you would expect from a central hotel. The service was even worse. The hotel itself seems really run down and had a strange overwhelming cheap pot pourri smell. My advice? Avoid it at all costs!

This was so disappointing, we have been to Six by Nico in Glasgow and this was such a bad experience compared to the Glasgow one. When we sat down we had to wait 15-20mins before anyone even spoke to us let alone offered us drinks. The 3 tables next to us who were seated after us had their first course before we even got our first drink. I’m not sure why our table seemed to have such a terrible wait time compared to everyone else. I can only assume our waiter was forgetting about us. The whole night we watched table after table get their food before us (which would be fine but these were tables that had been sat long after us). The worst part about all of this was that when we mentioned to our waiter that our food was taking a long time he didn’t even apologise or offer an explanation. The food was incredible when it eventually came, just it’s a shame when you decide to do something like this as a nice treat and end up having a bad time.

I was very excited to sample the set lunch menu at the Palmerston. Unfortunately, it did NOT live to expectations. The first course was 1/2 of an egg with 1 tablespoon of shredded cabbage/celeriac with mayo very poor and the second course was tagliatelle pasta ragu. The ragu lack in flavour and depth, my Italian grandmother would have been devastated. So we paid £21 for 2 courses and it was very unsatisfying. I wish we have gone to a different restaurant in Edinburgh, a pub meal would have been much more enjoyable. Maybe the a La carte is good but because the set menu was so poor that it is very off putting 🤷🏻♀️.

Delicious farm-grown food and meat. We were picked up at the bus stop and dropped back. Cozy, intimate bar and dining room. I would thoroughly recommend a visit

Cozy, tucked away, and just what I needed at midnight after a long day of travel. Service is quick and efficient, food is ready in minutes. If you choose to stay or to takeaway, they keep it easy. The pizzas are all one size, and are probably best described as “person” pizzas, although if you added sides it could be split by two less than starving people. Didn’t try their pasta, but will be back to do so!
