Sitwell Fish Bar in Derby

Visited on Wednesday lunchtime (10th Oct) only to find it was closed, despite the opening hours on the door stating it should be open! This place used to be a great fish & chip shop, and we have been regular customers for the past 40 years! Sadly, this was the final straw. Together with reduced opening times, and the food quality which has dropped markedly over the last year or so, my wife and I have taken the decision to find an alternative source for our lunchtime fish and chips. We won't be using Sitwell Fish Bar any longer ... very disappointed. Date of visit: September 2024

I ordered large chips and beef and onion pie and medium mushy peas. Overhaul the chips were tasty and the pukka pie was good. Staff could do with smiling more

Great food, very nice and tasty, the portions are very good, a medium portion of chips, was enough for 2 adults, the burger was cooked, just right and it had proper cheese on it, very pleased,

Cancelled my order because u have no meat why is the money not back in my account

will never get fish and chips from anywhere else, absolutely lovely.

Having seen lots of bad reviews recently I thought I’d give it a try and everyone whoes left a bad review give them another chance I had small haddock which was massive chips and curry sauce all nice and hot couldn’t complain at all very nice will come again

Fancied fish and chips today, I looked at reviews for Sitwell and zanfish and thought I'd give it a miss but couldn't think what else I fancied. Decided to chance it and glad I did! I ordered a large Cod (like my fish freshly cooked) battered sausage and small chips, the fish was fantastic with a nice light batter which was crispy on both sides, the chips were nice also. So glad I decided to give it a go 😁👍

Great tasting food, very good prices, the haddock was very nice, the chips were perfectly cooked, the burger was just right, it had proper cheese, which was very nice, will definitely order again,

Just bought a bag chips and they were inedible under cooked cheap potatoes only fit for the bin. If I'd have eaten them I would have had stomach and digestive trouble for a few days so no thank you avoid this at all cost.

Medium chips portion is massive and very good today, pie was spot on, quality food , quick service, happy punter

Not usual quality, chips uncooked so had to bin both bags, shame as portions were generous. Probably wasn’t best idea to order on hottest Monday evening of the year. Usually excellent.

We have used this chip shop for years, we've been a few times since the new management to give it chance and the food has been horrible every time, so we won't be going again. Really disappointing.

Everything tasted just fine, as usual, but the size of the 'large' haddock was disappointing - it was a good half the size I usually get for a large. I usually struggle to eat it, but this week, I was left feeling hungry. £7.50 was a lot of money for such a tiny piece of fish.

Only think we did NOT like, is that we received a small mushy peas instead of small gravy. My son was not happy. Please pay more attention to the orders. Thank you.

Went there today never again food is below par

Chips were under cooked again even though I asked them to cook in longer. Then to my surprise I had a lovely hair in my fish!

Poor pitta , was shocked how little meat was in it , lettuce is a definitely no because it was just limp , no shredded cabbage , just poor quality and the portion of chips were just full of black bits , nearly every chip had black on it

Amazing foid, the child were very nice, my grandson usually on had a few chips, but he had half of my portion and he them all, the curry sauce is very nice and thick, the only thing was, I ordered two saveloy and they only sent one, but that was very nice, well worth the money, will definitely order again.

Very expensive for small portions and its not the best quality food for the price your paying.. The staff are very ignorant and only speak to ask what you want No smile or greeting. It feels very unfriendly. I have been a handful of times as it is quite local. But since there is never a change in quality or service i venture a little futher for better quality and service after all my family tea time get to gether is worth that little extra effort..There is no access for disability or the elderly and i really dont think help would be offered AVOID..

Very expensive for what you get and not all that great . Nothing special for the price they charge. Worth going a extra mile for bit more quality

Probably the best fish and chips serving this far out of Derby. Sometimes the chips are a bit underdone - today they were perfect. Fish is a generous size on standard and the large fish are huge and tasty. Chips portions are good. The small chips are more than enough for one hungry person and enough for two who don't like a lot of chips. The food quality is absolutely excellent. Fish is always tender and juicy and never dry. The cooking fat is always fresh. All-in-all, there's a level of care that is sadly lacking from many other fish and chips shops. Only thing I would like to see changed, is a salt and vinegar option on the items as an order option, as - unless you state so in the notes - you get neither. Even when you ask for S&V in the notes, it can often get missed. It's the only thing that denies this place a 5/5 rating. Delivery is almost always prompt and well within the estimated time. Give 'em a try - you'll not be disappointed.

Two day's in a row it's that good!! The fish is beautiful, batter, amazing. I always leave a note and they always deliver what I ask for. Best takeaway around 🌟

First time ordering from here, it was ok but not overly good, the chips were nice, donor meat in tray very small, would be nice to have an option of small or large portion but it did taste good quality

Gone downhill since being taken over unfortunately. Also no longer make homemade fishcakes... Which were phenomenonal

I had ordered cod and chips. With curry sauces. The cod and curry sauces were excellent. However, the chips on this occasion, were very undercooked. Some were hard in centre, whilst all of them had any colour from the frying process. I would prefer my order was a little late and be properly cooked.

Sitwell you didn't disapoint. Amazing food and just eat wonderful delivery on time thankyou.

I’ve been going all the way to Draycott fish & Chips because this place as gone down the pan I wouldn’t Bother , from Spondon and it’s sad how bad it is now look don’t bother Draycott Chippy is Quality it’s worth it sad to say

Chips weren’t cooked looked very insipid, back to Zanfish, shame as it use to be a fantastic chip shop

The chips were anaemic the fish was tasteless and the mushy peas were no better will never buy again

Used to be a very nice place to visit. But new staff and or management have driven the place into the ground. Less friendly, young staff who seem generally disinterested. Fish was soggy and soft despite being cooked fresh for me, chips were soft and anaemic and the portion size of both the fish and chips was way down to usual. It was the exact opposite of what it used to be. Will make the trip to zanfish instead.

The chips have lost the chip shop taste they used to have and the last couple of times have been very tough chewy little things with loads of sharp bits as well.

We had Donna meat and chips today teatime it was burnt unedible even the dog wouldn't eat the meat very hard disgusting the chips ok gone down hill. New staff not been trained properly

Been going here for years fish great chips perfect then a few months ago things changed fish like mush chips not cooked and again another price increase for even smaller portions .

What was once the best chippie for miles is now the worst . Was a regular customer for years but no longer , we now have to drive smoke or so down the road for decent fish and chips and service.

Staff don’t seem very happy at all. No one greets you. Used to be such a happy place. Chips very aneamic and soggy. Chicken wrap - chicken quite tasteless and some pieces tough. Salad nice and fresh though but no tomatoes. Such a shame as zan fish becoming very popular now

Have been going here for years but recently the food has become stale, chewy, soft and or overcooked. Had fish last night and it was like rubber. Wont be going back unfortunatly

Most Fish and chip shops have a good chips as it is the bread-and-butter of the trains. All chippies have got their own products which they like to sell more than others. However, this chippy generally does most things you’d expect from the chippy. The owners usually in when we’ve been and we’ve had a laugh. We moved into the area and don’t really know the shops or the people around. However the staff have been really helpful and quite quirky. Definitely place to try out if you fancy some good wholesome British takeaway Pricing is about average, but slightly deal on some products as expected, but the day-to-day ordering is pretty on point with the current market. Portion sizes are pretty average however don’t be too specific with your order which sounds crazy as you’re paying for it as they won’t always follow the instructions which can be a bit frustrating at times as the wait times are long ( casual speed / service) and you don’t wanna hold to holdup hungry people eager to order.

Food is always lovely , chips exactly as I like them and the chicken kebab meat is gorgeous, go early though as it gets busy and they can run out quickly Currently card cayment only

After a Firework show nearby, needed some food, Sitwell Fish Bar was very very busy but the staff cope easily and with the plenty of choices from the menu we were happy with the Doner kebabs and cheesy chips.

Was served by a girl with brown curly hair and lots of eyeliner. She clearly did not want to be there and stared at everyone that came into the shop to make them feel intimidated. She got curry sauce all over my order and was chewing gum with her mouth open the whole time all over the food. This has really put me off going back as the guy that used to run it used to make everyone feel so welcome. Now I feel like it’s ran by 16 year olds that clearly think they run the place.

Sat on Saturday afternoon in car on road with a mate. Went in got fish mix for me mate, was deepest fish I'd had chips and mushy peas cryptonite green plenty salt vinegar mate almost chocked to death but he's okay. Highly satisfied we shared one large fish mix and a destination on Ilkeston route into Derby. Thanks guys

The freshly made breaded haddock is well worth giving a try. A takeaway from the Sitwell Fish Bar is the treat of the week. Give it a try.

I spent £9.80 and two pieces of fish to which I was really looking forward to, but I was very disappointed to find they had used old scabby fish that was discoloured, extremely chewy and had a nasty taste to which I had to bin. Would NOT recommend

Chippy tea with friends, you just had to see the queue waiting to be served to see how popular this place is, food is cooked whilst you wait and the staff were doing a brilliant job in getting the orders out to customers.
