This really should be a Very Good classification. But for two reasons I have downgraded. Firstly as a solo visitor, they automatically added a service charge, why? It's a personal gripe. Secondly I thought it was a bit pricey (although it is London). The place itself is nice inside. The main course I had (Gosht A La Nilgiri), was very tasty. Not too hot ( as described) but nicely spiced with tender chunks of lamb. The Keema Nan was also fine.

I had a spectacular dinner here a couple of years ago so chose Sitar for a birthday gathering recently. The food was fine, typical of every other Indian restaurant, nothing outstanding like it had been. The restaurant was very hot, and we had to ask repeatedly for cool air, definitely affecting our enjoyment. My friends all declared it very good, but I had hoped for what it used to be.

Dined here with a colleague who has used this restaurant for 20 years. It is very good food, owned and run by Bangladeshi staff, and not your standard 'western curry' fare. We shared a medium strength chicken curry and a hot lamb curry - they were excellent and full of interesting flavours. The side dishes were OK - basic but tasty. The prices are reasonable and the staff friendly. Will return and recommend to anyone fancying an authentic no-frills curry

Great indian food at reasonable price in a friendly atmosphere. A diverse menu with spicy and sweet spectrum of dishes from lamb over chicken to veggie and of cause naan and plenty of nice beer. And a final with chockolate and warm humid cloth to wrap your fingers and mouth before leaving. Highly recommendable

This was the second time I went back to this restaurant after 4 years. Nothing appeared to have changed except some items in the menu. They however have a very wide selection of fine Indian dishes. I tried to remember the lamb preparation that I liked very much during my previous visit and thought it was "Methi Lamb", which I didn't find in the menu. I spoke to Nipo about this and he proactively suggested that he could still talk to the cook and have it cooked for me although it was not in the menu. Although it didn't taste as good as it did earlier, it was quite delicious and I enjoyed it. He also got me some extra crispy tandoori roti / naan. My wife ordered Karahi Gosht which was also very tasty. I had some "Cobra" beer too that went very well with the meal. The portions were so huge and we ate so much that there was no room for dessert. When I came back to Canada, still curious to confirm what I had last time, I went through my reviews and found it was actually "Lal Mirch Gosht" (not Methi Lamb as I wrongly remembered) that I ordered during my last visit which was simply out of the world. Unfortunately, this item too does not appear currently in their menu. However, they have such a huge selection of great tasting items to choose from, it is very likely that one would enjoy whatever food he / she ordered.Besides delectable Indian cuisine and nice ambience, it is the initiative and helping attitude Nipo demonstrated that will go a long way to bring the customers back to this restaurant.

Menu variety unusually small for Indian so expected dishes to be tasty but was disappointed. Meals have a not great aftertaste usually an indicator of not fresh ingredients. Expensive mains that did not include rice. Total bill for three mains and Samosa entree was £95. Not value for money with rice being an added extra. Better Indian available.

We had dinner there before going to Somerset House. We fancied some Indian food which we are very fond of. This was, without a doubt, the worst Indian food we ve ever had. Indescript meat smothered in congealed sauce that could have come out of a jar, I have never had lamb pasanda that bad. No flavour, all the food, dry rice, insipid saag aloo and waiters unfriendly and clearly in a rush for their customers to come, eat, pay and clear off. because of the tourist location, these people assume that everybody is a tourist and just accept this terrible service. I would definitely not set foot in this so called restaurant again! There are some wonderful Indian restaurants in London, this one is a joke.

This is very good indian food. I was there with a friend at 130pm and the restaurant was about one third full at its busiest before we were fairly unceremoniously told they were closing at 3. More on that in a minute. Easy to find, on the Strand where the road divides into two. The restaurant is medium sized and the decor is modern and in very good condition as is the drapery which is very well laundered and crisply white. Service here is OK. I was early for my lunch meeting and was offered a seat but nothing else - no drink, no menu. I eventually asked the waiter for a drink which was silently provided quite quickly. Menus didn't arrive until my dining partner did. This is OK and I guess this is policy, but throughout this 15 minute period there was no conversation from the wait staff or even really acknowledgement that I was there. Somewhat strange. The food, once ordered, arrived in a timely fashion and was first class. Decent but not overwhelming portions, perfectly spiced and flavorful. Really very good. Delivered, again, in an efficient but wordless and somewhat unfriendly manner. We were not offered drink refills and had to ask for them. When we were done it was around 245 and we were told that we could only order tea or coffee and would have to leave at 3 as the kitchen was now closed. Again, this is reasonable but it would have been nice to have been told that timeframe upfront so we could plan.I would certainly return for the food, but the service needs to tick up a bit. These two offset one another and make a 4 star rating appropriate here - the food is probably better than that, the service; worse.

As a solo diner, I was seated quickly and served promptly. It was a little off-putting to be seated in a corner behind the goldfish tank, but I actually enjoyed watching the fish as I dined. The menu has plenty of options. I found the vegetarian samosa smaller than at some other Indian restaurants (almost Burmese-style), but the serving of 3 is fine for a single diner or splittable among other appetizers for a group. The rogon josh was excellent- lamb was tender and the sauce had a nice tang to it- and I very much enjoyed the mushroom rice. It's a little pricey for a budget-conscious diner, but a worthwhile mid-range restaurant.

I have eaten in many indian restaurants over the years and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find ones that satisfy my cravings... I am somewhat of a foodie and I'm always on the look out for a great curry. Unfortunately I'm susually left unsatisfied and dissapointed. This was not the case yesterday when my boyfriend and I ate in Sitar! We had the Chicken Tikka Massala and the Stuffed Murg Tandoori Massala. Absolutely delicious!! The Murg was like nothing I've had before... if felt like a modern spin on indian food but without loosing the very authentic flavours. Both dishes had the same massala sauce but the murg still was different enough for it to not be a problem. Both dishes rich in flavour and depth...so aromatic...so much flavour it was obscene!! Im used to restaurants just dumping a pile of sugar into tikka massala dishes and ruining them....but not in this restaurant!! I wasn't disappointed, we all thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The owner, Mr Khan was very attentive and suggested several dishes based on our tastes. The food was excellent and quite reasonably priced considering we were in "theatreland". Some restaurants can feel a bit pushy and intimidating but we all felt relaxed and at ease with the friendly staff. The seating was well spaced giving the restaurant a light and airy feel. this was an impulse visit, we all needed something to eat and the menu look pretty good, food a bit pricey compared to what I'm used to paying but hey you probably have a hefty premium for such a central location

I must admit the food was very good (I took a lamb dish and my friends the chicken tandoori and all were cooked to perfection!!). However, we left the restaurant feeling disappointed with how we had been served , us and two other tables had to ask 3 x for them to bring us napkins as none were on the table and they only came towards the end of the meal when I asked for the third time, they were not very pleasant when they took our order as we were asking some questions about different dishes and they barely answered us. We then asked for some sauce with the rice and naan and it never came yet they charged us on the receipt and then tried to make us believe that they had brought it out ... And so many other small issues of incomprehension ,their English wasn't very good etc. all in all the food was very good but the service was disappointing as we didn't feel welcome

Called in at this restaurant on impulse while walking past in the early evening (7.30pm). There were plenty of tables available and my Vegetarian Thali was spectacular and tasty

On the edge of theatreland, a nice sized Indian restaurant, tables not too close totgether. You are paying a premium based on the location as most dishes elsewhere would be a few quid cheaper. Nice Lamb shank and my colleague had the crab curry which is tricky to do and maybe the subtleties are challenging. That said, a pleasant evening a would eat there again. £52 for two mains, two sides, one rice, bread and 2 drinks.

On our travels we tend to look up Indian restaurants, this one was recommended by a staff member at our hotel which is close by. The restaurant itself is very low key but cozy, 2 out of 3 staff members look tired and a bit grumpy but the third one (a nice elderly man) made up for it by being very friendly, professional and attentive. The food was excellent, typical Indian cuisine served to share. We were 4 people and we ordered 5 dishes (mixture of fish, lamb and chicken) + naan’s and it was very satisfying. We well surely look this place up again next time around in London.

I always like to try new dishes and the Stuffed Murg Chicken Tandoori Massala was delicious. Sheek kebab starter also great. all food every well presented. Waiter very friendly, and for my cheek they even allowed me to take away one of their newspapers (well it was late on!)

Service left much to be asked for. The staff was focussed on just a few tables, not sure why. Food was pretty good though, but had to call staff for everything, even 15 minutes to get a menu.

This restaurant is good for the location and price. The staff are very patient with large groups and the food was of a good quality. The Sitar restaurant is well worth a visit as it is central, being on the Strand and near Covent Garden

Went to this restaurant after a show. Not that busy, but looked nice. Do not be put off. The food is excellent. Short menu. Four of us ate there, different starters and main courses. Wonderful spicing, could really taste the different flavours. The sheesh kebabs and lamb samosas were amazing, slow build up of spices which came alive. The different rices were beautifully cooked, the nan light and delicious. The chicken xcutti was one of the best. The staff were the only downside - less than happy and welcoming.

Booked a table for after the theatre - no need really as the sitar was quite empty. The food is what you would expect and no more. Reasonable value for the area.

I have been going to this restaurant for over 10 years and recently the almost inevitable slide has begun. On arrival the other night I noticed that the coat rack had been replaced by 2 tables so that they could squeeze in another 4 customers. Not good. The service was grindingly slow and the food turned up after an age. Chicken a la Nilgiri (a "Sitar speciality") watery, indistinct and tepid and at £12.95 not special. It is de rigueur these days to give standard Indian dishes (well you know Anglo-Indian dishes) ridiculously obscure and fake names and so Chicken Madras becomes Chicken a la Nilgiri and you can add an extra £4 - simples! To top it all off it took an age to get the bill. I can't see any reason to go back there.

We decided to to for one of the house specialities, the stuffed chicken tikka masala. We got an excellent chicken fillet ample portion stuffed with mushroom covered in a weakish curry sauce, reasonably pleasant but not really a mainstream curry dish ( but we did choose it ! ). The accompanying sag paneer and preceding vegetable samosas were rather sad and anaemic. The bill came to over £ 70, which we regarded as rather steep for what we had. At the margin, I'd prefer they didn't blow so much hot air into the restaurant, and if I'm being really picky, why don't they straighten up those pictures on the wall ??!

The Sitar must be one of the best typical Indian restaurants in London. It is close by the Indian embassy.I have been a regular for some years. Tonight's meal was great. Very well presented food and friendly staff.I had the Sitar special starter and the Biryani which was superb. You can tell a good Indian restaurant by it's Biryani.Well done the Sitar

We ate dinner at the Sitar Indian Restaurant while we were in London for a week. It was a great introduction for us to Indian food. We had a variety of menu items to sample which were traditional Indian foods. None were too spicy which we liked. A short walk from Covent Garden.Best tip: Give this place a try. It has great service and is well-respected for serving Indian/Bangladeshi dishes.

Went there for pre-theatre dinner. We were informed after 45 minutes that starters will take more time. Since we were running risk of getting late for the show, we had to cancel starters and jump straight onto main course. The food was reasonably good, not exceptional but not bad. Although the complimentary popaddum was not good.

Average given the price. Nothing particularly bad, but given the price the food quality was about average and nothing really stood out as wow, as you would hope for somewhere charging £50/head. On the face of it the decor looks ornate and impressive, but actually when you looked closer the wood panelling looked tired, and in places may have had black mould on the edges of the mouldings. The atmosphere was also somehow cold and lacking warmth and class — it is possible this was due to a poor choice of lighting, mostly overhead and cold in temperature, and not enough side lighting and of a warmer colour temperature. It was also actually cold! It is not clear why the air conditioning would be on and set to such a low temperature in October. It was too cold for my 74 year old mother, but eventually they did provide a small space heater, which greatly improved things. The staff were friendly and helpful — i.e. with the space heater —and the manager honoured the price I was quoted online, which disagreed with the price in the menu in the restaurant.

Its closed. Thank heavens. Dirty place. Oily food. Hideous. Had a photo of Princess Diana in the window so as to lure in punters. In the photo Diana is running away from this place.

I had an incredible dining experience at Royal India in Covent Garden. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a beautifully authentic atmosphere that set the tone for a memorable meal. The staff was attentive and friendly, making excellent recommendations tailored to our tastes. The food was truly exceptional—each dish was rich, flavorful, and expertly spiced, capturing the true essence of Indian cuisine. The butter chicken was silky and packed with flavor, while the biryani was aromatic and perfectly balanced. Whether you’re a fan of Indian cuisine or just looking to try something new, Royal India is a must-visit. This is easily one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to in London, and I can’t wait to return!
