Sister Bao House in Edinburgh, City of

The girl at the reception is exceptionally rude for multiple times. Last time I had chili wontons, and when I paid at the cashier, I casually said the price has risen, she shrugged her shoulders, gave an eye roll, and said 'that's the price...'..Today I went to order a rice dish and said I would like to sit in. After realising that she has put a service charge on my bills I said sorry can I change to take away then, she shrugged, made a rude hand gesture, and looked really unhappy. I asked her why she did the hand gesture and she was being rude, she started complaining that she had to re-do the amount on the till...This is the second time that I have experienced her being rude and condescending, judging customers and being extremely unpleasant when she is simply asked to do her job. Since she has been doing this as a pattern, I can imagine that she has been doing this to most other customers. This leaves a bad impression of Sister Bao, since the food here is delicious. I hope something can be done about this.

Unpleasant, under new ownership and no longer serving authentic freshly made Chinese food. Bao are pre-made and kept warm so they’re not fluffy and fresh, served on a cold plate instead of in a bamboo steamer like they used to be, and served with soy sauce for dipping which just doesn’t make sense. Noodles now no longer taste freshly made and the sauce, rather than being delicate, aromatic and complexly flavoured like it used to be, consisted just of burnt garlic and chilli flakes- no flavour, just unbearable heat and the unpleasant texture of burnt chilli flakes all over your noodles. This place used to always be full and have a lovely atmosphere but clearly the decline in the quality of food has emptied the place. The servers were nice but unfortunately the food was terrible. Very upsetting as this used to be my favourite place to eat in Edinburgh. Now it’s just a waste of money.

A terrific wee bun and noodle place in Newington. I highly recommend the oil spill soup - intensely spicy and very flavourful, with fresh herbs.

Authentic bao and noodles! Unexpectedly good food :)

Had lunch in this place and really liked the vibe. Service was friendly and the bao were really delicious. You tiao very nice too. Xiao long bao were a bit lacking in broth, but still moist and tasty.

Went there some time ago, good enough food for the price. When I walked pass the stairs I think I heard someone singing downstairs?😂 He was very good

This isn't a fancy place, but it doesn't pretend to be either. Simple, tasty, traditional northern chinese baozi at a sensible price. We had a baozi each and shared a noodle dish. Fair warning, the noodles were pretty average, but we didn't come for noodles... These baozi are quite big, so don't be surprised if two or three fill you up. Would have been nice to see some vegetarian options like egg and chive, but pork baozi are a classic. Service was friendly and quick, they have a load of baozi steamed up and ready to go so we got to tuck in pretty promptly even while it was so busy the poor waiter was getting rushed off his feet.

I've been eating here religiously for 3 years, but something changed a few months ago. The cook was an old chinese man, cooking amazing food, but he is not here anymore. The dumpling noodle soup used to be so delicious, and now it is just soy sauce soup...very salty and no special taste, very disappointing. The mushroom dumplings used to be homemade, but now they served the frozen ones from the Chinese supermarket! They also took the homemade soy milk off the menu. Very disappointed :( the place used to be so busy Saturday lunch time, but now there is nobody there.

Delicious bao buns and noodles with lots of options

Fantastic experience - delicious food, filling portions, prompt efficient service & stunningly great prices - I cannot recommend it enough. They also have a good variety of vegetarian options.

First time trying Sister Bao tonight. The Dan Dan Noodles and the dumplings were really good. And this is coming from a person who ate them often in Hong Kong. Will visit again. Service was good. Update 21.8.23 Visited again today after the first time since Christmas 2022 during lunch time. The DD noodles were the same ,service was fine. Not Sister Bao’s fault but those mainland china students absolutely ruined the experience for everyone today, talking so loud all the way throughout despite being in a small public space, those mainland people have all that money to study in Edinburgh but can’t buy a bit of etiquette and class.

Super friendly and helpful service. The Bao are extremely good! I highly recommend the coconut and pumpkin one.

It’s not great. The buns are pretty dry and the pancakes were solid. Gyoza were good. Waitress wasn’t very friendly.

Food was ok but got food poison the following day 🤢

J'ai pris le hot spicy beef qui était très épicé. Je le recommande pour les gens qui aiment très épices. J'ai aussi pris un bun au miel qui était correct mais je n'ai pas senti le goût du miel et il y avait peu de garniture.

Atmosfera w lokalu świetna. Obsługa bardzo przyjazna. Jedzenie dobre, ale nie świetne. Trochę brakowało mi przypraw, przez co moje danie (makaron z wołowiną i pomidorami w wersji z sosem) było niezbyt wyraźne.

The Staff & Owners were darling. The Bao was delicious. They just needed a little more steam heat. The dumplings were awesome and the menu looks like it has incredible dinner items. Don't shy away for a dinner here versus a lunch or snack as that's all I had time for. My local friend took me here and loves it as well. It was alright. My ramen was labeled vegetarian, but I'm pretty sure there was some sort of fish or oyster sauce that made the plate taste really fishy? Other than that it was good with kind staff.

Buns are handmade and delicious.

Very bad, never visit again. Flavors and recipes are amateur. Skin of steam dumplings are tough and doughy, fillings are disgusting, mushy and taste weird. 70%of the menu are not available, load of item got crossed. Price is ridiculous too. Pathetic

Not sure how this place even gets more than 3 stars.. the food is ok, dumplings were fine but the noodles lacks flavours. Don’t bother ordering them. The service is also poor.. we went there tonight. First of all we don’t know what the dishes mean and the guy taking the order didn’t pay attention to what we were asking and ended up ordering something which had noodles and cilantro only..my wife ordered katsu fun and it wasn’t good either..just plain noodles with fried chicken.. Also when the meal arrived we were not given any cutleries..we had to take and serve ourselves. The service guy always seems to be busy with his phone and he even forget some of our order and later when I reminded him he came back and told us that the last one was served to the next table when in fact we ordered way before they arrived.. Honestly money was flushed in the toilet..not going back..

I'm *so* happy to have found this little gem. Where to start? Firstly, the service & staff are so polite; always happy to chat to you and make sure you're enjoying yourself. The food is absolutely delicious and it's so great to find a high quality, yet super affordable, authentic Chinese in the city. Go, go, go!

Ordered dan dan noodles and braised chicken leg fun, both were superb. The chicken one was well worth the price. However, the XLB and rose red bean bun were let-downs. XLB’s skin was too thick, did not taste like XLB at all and the red bean bun filling was too dry, could’ve gotten better ones from the supermarkets. Overall, would recommend this restaurant for noodles, but not the XLB or the red bean bun.

Don't be put off by shabby steamed up windows. Really interesting authentic bao buns and dumplings. Veggie options a bit limited and sweet but the soups and noodles are spot on. No frills interior adds to authenticity!

Xiao lung Bao : It is definitely not delicious. Fried pork is small dishes charged over GBP10. Beef brisket isn't juicy. Only the dumpling is normal standard. It is disappointed we ate here for 1st dinner in Edinburgh when we travelling.

Really nice food at an affordable price, definitely reminds me of my mum's cooking. Not your run of the mill restaurant stuff but has a cosy home vibe. Polite staff :)

Food quality bad like shxt. the worst chinese food i had in UK

Went here with a friend, we were having a good time until the waiter decided that it would be a good idea to be rude and drop/throw the food on the table next to us instead of our table, without saying a word. We tried to get his attention so he could explain which dumpling was which but no luck. It just seemed like the waiter did not want to be there and it was our fault. Don't worry, we did not take it personally, we just laughed as it seemed almost impossible to be this rude to people. We will obviously not be coming back, wish this has not been our experience and hopefully the waiter gets proper training on how to treat and serve human beings. Best of luck!

Mixed platter was some beef and diced pork belly! Nothing like the picture on the menu. Noodles came bland, dry and stuck together in a clump. Dumplings were hard, hardly any broth filling. Seriously dissatisfied and really hope the sit in option is better.

I've eaten in many Chinese restaurants all around the U.K. This place has the best belly pork I've ever had from a Chinese restaurant for sure. The food was fresh, hot and tasty. Pricing is very reasonable considering the location, my main dish was around £9-10. Quite relaxed atmosphere and you definitely don't feel rushed. Free WiFi is available. Would recommend.

I have brought honey roast pork bun and it is not the traditional pork bun that I eat in Hong Kong. That is vegetables bun??? Hate to see pork bun become vegetable. 叉燒包不是叉燒包，是菜肉包，還要難吃過菜肉包。 可不可以不要侮辱了叉燒包，叉燒包可是很好吃的。

My Sunday dinner go to. The hot and dry noodles are exceptional. If you want something more meaty, the Dan Dan noodles are perfect and today I tried the spicy been fun. The best thing about this place is that they have out of almost all Chinese restaurants I’ve been to, delivered consistently on the quality and tenderness of meat. Such a good place. The spicy tofu bao is now my favourite.

Just had amazing lunch here, I ordered beef spicy noodle. It's not ordinary chinese yellow noodle but like rice noodle, i love the texture. It was so refreshing, savoury and delightful. I will come back for sure, and the price is affordable, I spent £10. Another story, I left my phone there and the kind staff help me to get it back, thank you very much

Had their set meal A for 12£ (noodle +1bun+drink) but as I chose a different noodle dish (spicy chicken leg) so 1£ added extra. Overall tasty food. The noodle chicken soup was ok. Pak shitake bun was good too. But I think 13£ is a little expensive for the food.

Very good value for money - I normally have 2 Bao and this is enough for lunch, this plus a drink is usually £7! Delicious too :)

I ordered buns from this place, and there's a piece of glass fragment in the bun. This is extremely dangerous and can cause serious injury. Will never order again.

Tasty noodles, friendly service. Knocking down one star because £7 is very steep for a side of edamame! I ordered it because it was called "edamame salad" on the menu, which is a bit misleading. I would go back because it's good, but I'll be more careful with what I pick from the menu!

Expensive Asian fast food and a bit dry, but I like the flavors and convenience. Food seems to be frozen and re-heated. The buns have a low filling-to-dough ratio but remind me of home.

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS 😋 I can't wait till the next time I'm back which will be very soon! I was dining with someone who has an allergy and they were very lovely and attentive. All the staff were nice and the food is absolutely amazing, we are both veggie but that didn't stop the food from being so flavourful !! Definitely Definitely recommend. Sister bao is one of my favourite places in the city. The food is good, the service is fast, and the prices not too high even with the recent increases. Sister bao is always on my list of options if I'm looking for food in this area of Edinburgh

I am very, very upset with the service I received from Sister Bao yesterday. It has previously been one of my favourite meal places in Edinburgh until now. Yesterday I received an apparent plant-based meal that was crawling with every meat you can think of. My tofu & chive dumplings came with prawn & some other form of meat in them and my tofu ramen had bits of beef & chicken floating around in them. I want to reiterate just how upsetting this is for me. I have been vegan for 8 years and had not touched meat since and for me to have now, just from the ignorance and lack of care of somebody else, is so disheartening and upsetting. I hope you do better & I won’t be back.

The small wonton soup was absofrickinamazing - I was quite full from my day but dropped by because I had a craving for baos. I found the recommended chicken Bao good (not great - wish it had been juicier inside) but the wonton soup omg. I’m already looking forward to going back.

You're definitely up for a delicious treat if you decide to eat here. The restaurant offers a great variety of vegetarian dishes. Easy to recommend

Very good tastey food with friendly staff

It is hard to beat this place in terms of price and overall quality of the food. Everything is handmade and absolutely delicious. For approximately 10£ each my husband and I were able to have two large bao each? split some Shanghai-style soup dumplings (Xiao Long Buns), and have Dan Dan noodles (a definite highlight in the menu!) This is probably be of our top Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh - a city that boasts a lot of truly excellent Chinese restaurants.

Quick and delicious with plenty vegan and veggie options. My fav go to are the rainbow salad - with tofu skin, fungus mushrooms and peanuts and shitake gyozas. That set can easily feed two. The premises are simple. It's a no fuss diner rather than a restaurant but those places are always the tastiest.

I’m Chinese okay, these are definitely the best buns in Edinburgh. Also the best priced- you can a wholesome lunch for 2, for 15£.

Too much dough, not enough filling. The xiao long baos had no soup inside them, and had more dough than Homer Simpson

Delicious takeaway. Had a curry chicken Bao and pork dumplings. Buns were steamed in house. Dumplings were grilled over a pan over an open flame. Highest recommendations for this, especially the dumplings.

One of the best places for a quick meal in Edinburgh right now. You can either sit in or take away. The price is affordable and the service is fast. I am personally in love with the vegetarian bao buns and the hot dry noodles. The dumplings were nice too.

Nie dobre. Niestety źle wspominam to miejsce. Pierwsze witają nas brudne okna, myślę okej, pewnie to jezdni z niepozornych miejsc. Menu rozpadające się w rękach, pomazane. Zamawiamy Bao i dwa dania i napoje. Bułeczka podgrzana z niezidentyfikowanym nadzieniem, dziwna. Pierożki w zupie jeszcze mniej przekonujące. Trudno było to jeść. Już nie wspominając o okropnej łazience w lokalu. Jedno z gorszych miejsc w jakich byłam podróżując, a szkoda bo wyglądało na autentyczne.

Essen hat nicht gut geschmeckt. Der vegetarische Bun war unerwartet süß und hatte zuviel Teig und zu wenig Füllung. Die vegetarischen Nudeln mit Kokos waren klebrig, versalzen und schmeckten chemisch. Kein Gemüse drauf, außerdem. Personal jedoch freundlich. Eher ein Takeaway mit ein paar Sitzgelegenheiten.

Delicious food! All of the steamed buns were so fluffy and tasty. The edamame salad was very flavorful, and the dan dan noodles were 10/10 - easily some of the best noodles I’ve ever had.

Very disappointed that the food and service got so much worse than before. The lady worked at the counter was very rude and made us feel unwelcome. We ordered dumplings, buns and noodles. The 4 pok choi buns came still frozen in the centre and they replaced them. However, 2 of them still came frozen!!! This is really unacceptable.. The dumplings were okay but the dan dan noodle was very salty.. Wouldn’t recommend.

Ordered on deliveroo. As someone grew up with Chinese food (in Hong Kong) I had high expectations of this place but it’s very average in my opinion. Soya milk was tasteless, golden buns came not crispy but soggy and cold. Condensed milk tastes diluted. Dumplings were alright but too expensive - almost £1 for one dumpling. Buns were a bit more reasonably priced but there was so little fillings - only one small piece of chicken in chicken curry bun! The honey roast pork bun was nothing like what I expected - I expected Char Siu with a lot of bbq sauce but there was barely any sauce. Overall I would not order from this place again but I’m guessing it’s got a more Northern Chinese flavour than southern/ Cantonese.

Online ordering was confusing so ended up paying for collection as opposed to delivery. Team tried their best to resolve so ended up okay in the end. Well done and very good, authentic food.

Fantastic! Easy on the wallet. Huge bang for your buck flavour. Get the Dan Dan noodles for spicy pork with soup and Szechuan pepper!

Very yummy paos and service very good good price

The buns were only very warmed up and tasted like they'd been sat there for days. The service was very cold and unwelcoming. Staff were all happy and cheerful talking to each other but as soon as a customer arrived they looked like their day had been ruined.

Everything was unlabelled so we had to work out/guess what everything was, which spoiled things. We think we were able to work it out, but when all the buns look the same it's very difficult. If people were veggie or had allergies to certain dishes (e.g. satay) then they would not be able to make the distinction confidentiality. The buns are good, but we're still not confident we split them up between us correctly. Can you please identify what each bun in each bag is in the future please?

Amazing, many flavour choices. I ordered meigan pork & Mapo tofu, all super!! The bao, the filling , the price, all 👏👏👏definitely standout even better than those I tried in Asian countries. Probably the best you can find in the UK!!

Amazing food at an affordable price. Sister bao house offers something unique with its wide range of Bao's. The Bao's themselves are delicious and freshly steamed. The service was impeccable and the food was ready in just a few minutes. The food is very well priced and you can get a lot of Bao's at an affordable price. They also serve noodles, salads and drinks. Highly recommend for a nice lunch meal.

A hearty, delicious lunch for a very good price! I highly recommend going for one of the combination meals for anyone's first try - we got four buns each (which were easy to split and share so that we could try more flavours!), generous servings of salad and drinks. The black fungus salad and seaweed salad were very good - just on the edge of my spice tolerance (which is pretty low) in the best way The buns were fluffy, light and filling, with a good range of different fillings - honey roast pork was particularly good. The atmosphere is comfortable, the staff are diligent and overall we had a great time! We left full and happy.

Just ate here for lunch and the food was amazing!! Some of the best Bao buns I've had outside of China! I got 4 different fillings and they were all delicious. Each Bao was huge! 4 was more than enough for me to feel full and they were such an affordable price. I live very close by so I'll be back often

Great Chinese food. Sister Bao House provided delicious and authentic food, made fresh and prepared in front of your eyes. We sat in to eat on Chinese New Year & the service was swift and considerate. Although the food took slightly longer to prepare due to it being made fresh, this didn't take away from the experience at all. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere good. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you want a nice authentic Chinese meal.

Gorgeous food. Quite filling. I had the dumpling soup and a couple bao buns. The service was a little chaotic but the food was well worth it!
