Sip & Tuck in Colchester

We didn't know Colchester at all, but happened upon Sip and Tuck when we were looking for lunch, and it was perfect for our requirements. Our only regret was that the portions were too generous for us to have room for a slice of cake! In fact, the Ploughman's defeated my husband, and so he had to ask for a doggy bag and the leftovers were sufficient for his lunch the next day.

We had coffee and a slice of Bakewell. We also asked for water. The Bakewell was stale and we told the waiter - we had both eaten approximately half. We ordered a further coffee but the water didn’t show up. They didn’t apologise for the stale Bakewell or even knock one of them off the bill. Expensive and quite frankly overrated.

This would have been higher but we had a strange man sitting at or table, was so weird and rude!!!! I had to bite my tongue due to the fact my son was there but if he has t been I would have told him to F**K OFF politely. Food was good tho and atmosphere. Battenburg was delicious. And too was the strawberry shake!

Based on the reviews I had read I was expecting a wonderful experience…however I was sadly very disappointed. We order two coffees and a piece of cake to share. We were seated for a long time before our order was taken and our order took even longer to be delivered. People who arrived after us received their food before us! After commenting to a passing waitress we finally received our food. The cake was tasty but the coffee was tasted watery. In total wouldn’t bother going back.

This is our second time here and we have just fallen in love with it - the staff are amazing 👏 the food is just lush and the home made beans are great - the avocado and Courgette cake was unbelievable as gluten and dairy free just beautiful thank you - will visit next time im in the uk 🇬🇧 5 stars 🌟

“British food is inedible”, “the lack of flavour is shocking” my apprehensive American boyfriend droned on as he arrived in the UK after a food tour across Asia. Despite his bad attitude (I’ve given him benefit of the doubt by attributing it to jet lag), he accompanied me to Colchester on a day trip. After a stunning castle tour and park walk we were famished and thought we would die, or worse, *have a domestic disagreement*. After trekking across the entirety of Colchester we spotted a hip looking brunch place with its instagram handle posted on the outside. “The Italian place we considered is closed so this will have to do” my fusspot American boyfriend stated. To our surprise the food and excellent quality ingredients moved him to tears. clearly good quality ingredients. Baron bigod is one of my favourite cheeses so seeing it on the menu was a great surprise. Had the bacon and Brie panini as well as the club sandwich. Two iced coffees. Cannot fault them.

I always like to try a new brunch venue, so I thought I’d try Sip and Tuck. Amazing location just opposite the entrance to Castle Park, which I think may be it’s saving grace. Friendly young serving staff. I ordered the chicken and waffles… it was described on the menu as chicken, waffles and breakfast potatoes. (A point to note if you are on a budget- the menu in the window is out of date and the ones on the table are current and more expensive!) When the food arrives I was somewhat shocked by the portion size for the price I paid and I’m not a big eater! One the plate were shop bought sugar waffles (I buy these exact ones from the supermarket for my mom!) two very small bits of tasteless chicken that could both of laid in the palm of my small hands, and a scattering of breakfast potatoes. There were so few I could literally count them! I know everything is so expensive now, but honestly It’s a potato so you could at least be a bit generous??? I called over the waitress to ask her if I could get some more breakfast potatoes as it was a bit ridiculous how few they were. She came back to advise :”the chef said they are more of a garnish” I politely replied that the menu didn’t state that and I was expecting a normal sized side portion . She advised the chef said I could hv more but I’d need to pay extra for them. No thanks. I paid nearly £12 for this! I was so disappointed I couldn’t even eat it. When I paid at the till, the chap asked if everything was alright… I politely told him the potato saga and how expensive I thought it was for the tiny portion. Also that the waffles are shop bought and not home made for the price. He apologised but offered nothing. I really wouldn’t recommend this place, but instead go to Tymperleys on Trinity Street, or Cafe 21 on Trinty Street or even Bills on the high street next to town hall.

We went for breakfast as a birthday treat for my sister and we orders 2 full English and 1 vegetarian breakfast. The poached eggs were served undercooked as the egg white was not cooked so we asked the waiter and he said that’s how the eggs come ‘snotty’ that was so off putting. He said when we ordered we should have said for our eggs not to be snotty. They come snotty, soft or well done. We couldn’t really finish our breakfast as the eggs turned my stomach then two fresh poached eggs came over in a separate bowl but our breakfast was cold and finished. Thought the customer care was awkward and not worth the £44 I spent. I thought as least they could do was send out a fresh breakfast. Why would we eat two poached from a bowl next to a cold breakfast that still had raw eggs on. Such a shame. I did send in a contact form but I haven’t received a reply.

Walking around Colchester, the name caught our eye and the cafe looked so inviting we had to give it a try. We weren’t disappointed as we had a delicious lunch and the service was excellent. We can recommend it as an excellent cafe to visit.

Positioned directly across from the Colchester War Memorial in front of the entrance to Castle park, this excellent cafe offers a comprehensive range of meals including vegan and vegetarian options. Combine this with excellent coffee, you have a winning combination that cannot fail to delight.

Having had trouble finding a dog-friendly cafe, I was greeted warmly. The light and airy interior was great. The staff were smart, intelligent and attentive. I got there just a few minutes before their kitchen was to close but they cooked me a lunch which was delicious.

Visited on Friday 02nd September 2022. Found whilst walking from St Botophs Priory to Castle Park. We stopped for brunch at what was a new cafe which the owner said was the old Tourist Information Office before he converted it into this cafe. Fun waitresses and decent food made it a nice experience.

Nice food and good service, although we have been made to feel very unwelcome on a few occasions! My biggest issue is the cost, £8.50 for porridge or a ham and cheese toasty is over the top. There are other places equally as good in the town that are more competitively priced. Saying that the coffee and cakes are highly recommended!

I am so pleased to have been presented with two options to pay. One was payment by card, the other was payment by cash. I chose cash. Since this place still accepts cash I will highly recommend it. The day it tells me that cash is no longer accepted will be the last time I eat in this friendly place.

I cannot recommend sip and tuck enough, the food is always amazing, the staff are really friendly and attentive, and there is a great atmosphere. I have visited a few times since the reopening after lockdown and there is a fab set up which has made me feel really at ease; if you are anxious about eating out because of coronavirus there is really no need to be when you visit sip and tuck -- the are lots of safety measures in place and the staff are spot on with social distancing and are all very accommodating. I really do think its the best place to get food in Colchester and I'm always bringing friends or family (especially for brunch which is amazing)!

This is the 2nd time I’ve had breakfast at Sip and Tuck since they reopened. It is a glorious experience! The staff are so lovely and professional and customer service is 1st class. My flat white was - as always - gorgeous, and the full English breakfast was delicious and big! I really love the courtyard and it’s such a relaxing place to sip coffee, tuck into great food and sit and stare.

I had brunch at Sip & Tuck with friends on Sunday morning. I was blown away by the measures they have put in place to ensure the safety of their staff and customers! Opted for two vegan breakfasts. Wide range of milk alternatives and sauces available. Staff very helpful. Vegan options clearly advertised. The breakfast is a solid 7/10 but I’d say that’s more down to personal preference. Pros: You can’t fault them for commitment when a breakfast includes tofu scramble, two vegan sausages and slices of aubergine which was a nice touch and a bit different. Highlight of the meal was the sourdough toast - delicious. Cons: Downside was the mushrooms, hardly any there and over cooked. Potato portion tasty but quite small (hash brown offered on the vegetarian breakfast but not this one). Would still happily eat here again and have the same meal so overall good experience. Where sip/tuck excels is the service and ambience. Quirky welcoming environment and decor, friendly vibe and great service.It’s set up well to accommodate, and carefully adheres to, social distancing and all government guidelines so a good place to take any nervous diners as there are no menus (all online), sanitiser and perspex screens on the table, temp check for everyone etc.

We loved the food (breakfast burrito and vegan breakfast), but it was also so reassuring to have such clear guidelines in place. Simple waiting outside to wait for a table if not prebooked, QR code track and trace, Temp check, masks through the restaurant and we sat in a lovely courtyard to eat. Felt very efficient and secure - and good was scrummy!

Myself and my wife went for breakfast on a Sunday morning shortly after reopening. I really must commend the owners and staff on how they've adapted the cafe to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Masks were a constant and the temperature check at the door was also really politely done. During our visit, the staff were incredibly polite, calm and friendly too. They were extremely empathetic to customers who may be a little more anxious with new guidelines, and we felt extremely comfortable and relaxed.

Our third visit. And first since Covid. Wow. You guys have got this sorted! Masks on whilst we stepped inside, then a friendly smile and our temperatures were taken. Masks off, with sanitised hands, we were shown to our pre-booked table. All the staff wore crisp and clean aprons and branded masks. Our table had Perspex to protect us and each table had another sanitiser pump (a really smart, smoked brown one as you find in spas) and instructions to access a menu via a barcode from our mobile phones. Our breakfasts were superb as always. I had smoked salmon on sourdough with two perfectly poached eggs. My family members chose a vegan full breakfast and another had a burrito which looked fabulous. We had coffees, teas and coolers (smoothies with sparkling water) and all were brought to us quickly and efficiently. Everywhere was sparkling clean and out of the four establishments we visited over the weekend with our family, this was by far the cleanest and in my opinion safest to visit. Well done guys!!

Had been to this cafe with a friend twice before and enjoyed croissants and coffee.So we decided to invite our friends for cooked breakfast. We reserved a table as it had been very busy at breakfast time previously.It’s a lovely place with good atmosphere and pleasant waiting staff. But what let this visit down was the barely warm poached eggs and salmon; eggs royal!! Not ideal on a cold day sleeting outside. The vegan cooked breakfast was overcooked and barely warm as well.The dishes must have been left waiting for some time in the kitchen I guess. Shame, we didn’t complain as we were enjoying our conversation together but don’t think I’ll be in a hurry to order breakfast here again.

Attractive cafe, good food and atmosphere, and friendly staff. In fact all good, but they have a 'joke' sign on the wall about preferring a cake on a plate or a tart on the floor! I'd prefer that in the bin please!

Frequent visitor - for solo lunches, couple breakfasts and the odd supper club - I’ve watched this place go from strength to strength over the last few years to rightfully claim its place as one of the best eatery options in Colchester, whatever time of day. The owners and staff are exceptionally welcoming and nothing seems too much bother. The food speaks for itself but this place offers more than just great bites - the atmosphere sets it apart. Well worth a visit. Huge congrats to Matt & Ruth and evening bigger thanks to Ash and the waiting team for being so consistent and welcoming every time.

I hadn't bee before, but went on recommendation. So glad I did, and went two days on the trot!Really original and tasty food, catering for a range of dietary needs without sacrificing flavour or quality. Good value for money too.Bit like the Tardis, as it's bigger than it looks from the outside. Young children not only welcomed, but catered for in the shape of 'blackboard tables' and pots of chalk - a rarity in Colchester.My last visit was within 5 minutes of the restaurant kitchens closing, but my sister and I were still welcomed and presented with an excellent fish finger sandwich for me, and a gluten free ham and cheese toastie for her.I haven't tried them, but their evening events look good too. Innovation is clearly evident here.Friendly staff, and nice atmosphere too.I shall be visiting more often now!

Went here for brunch on a busy Saturday afternoon with two other people, didn't book and walked in and had to wait a few minutes for a table. There was a wait on the food - of course - but we got it so much quicker than expected. I had the most delicious french toast brioche! The coffee was so good, too. I intend on returning a lot, and would love to try their supper club as well. Staff were so lovely and friendly, and we went away with some of their cakes available at the counter which are also definitely worth trying.

I have been a few times now with friends, family and my boyfriend and always had a great time. I love the food options whereby my boyfriend can enjoy a meat-based meal and I can a vegan option. The vegan fish and chips is so good even the meat eater agrees one of the best dupes for fish I’ve ever had. I also love the fact you can draw on the tables which makes it more fun when waiting for the food, although it never feels like the wait is long. The staff are super friends and everything nice and clean and well decorated so would definitely recommend.

Sip & Tuck is hands down my favourite cafe in town, and I have visited quite a few! Ruth & Matthew are excellent at what they do, I could not ask for better hosts. Service is always speedy, food is gorgeous and always hot when it arrives at the table. The concept is fantastic and interior is perfect to accommodate any type of customer. Staff are all friendly and helpful at all times. I would give you 10 stars if I could :)

Went here for brunch between wedding dress shopping in Colchester. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food was great. we went on a Saturday and would recommend booking a table as the place is fairly small and gets very busy. You get your table and then order at the counter with food then brought to your table.

We attended (in a large party) a supper club last weekend. Communication was superb, they catered for very specific dietary requirements, and were a joy to deal with. Service on the night was impeccable, nothing was too much trouble. The food was immense, one of the best places we've visited for a Christmas meal. The menu was really innovative and everyone commented on the quality of their food.

Sip & Tuck is the best eatery in Colchester town and their coffee is best I have ever tasted. I am a regular customer of sip & tuck and the reason I keep coming back is not only because of the locally sourced luxury produce that is used for every meal but it is because of the lovely, warm and friendly staff that work there. Even when they are rushed off their feet, they still go out of their way to have a chat and make sure my every need is met to the highest standard. I’m originally from Ireland and this little place always reminds me of home because of their hospitality. I also have attended many of their supper club evenings too and I am looking forward to attending their festive supper club event next week with my mum. Keep up the good work sip & tuck x

When you visit a place often, it's easy to forget to write a review so it's about time I did! What can I say? I love this place. Always greeted with a smile, the manager and her team always go out of their way to make you feel welcome from the get go. They have a delicious selection of food on the menu and cakes on the counter that look (and taste) fantastic! Their coffee is also the best in town. My favourite thing about S&T; however is the service I've received on every visit. All the staff are friendly and even when rushed off their feet (which they often are) they always make time to chat and check back on you and just generally find out about your day. First things first, let me make it very clear to you that the Sip & Tuck home-made hash browns are a true delight; don't be a fool and always order at least two. The Mango Medley is also incredibly soul-saving and the grilled marinated Aubergine awoke taste buds I never even knew I had.

I am a frequent visitor of sip and tuck, I live locally and have been a regular since it opened. I like the style and the atmosphere and the food is generally pretty good. However, I have been really let down. Last Christmas (2018) I booked a table for a festive supper club with my friends. My number was taken and I was told I would be called a week or so before the meal for our menu choices. No call came, so the day before I rang them up to give them our menu choices as no one had contacted me. I was told the evening had been cancelled as not enough people had booked but it was partially my fault because I hadn’t given my menu choices! I was not having this as they said they would call me, it’s not my job to call them! Also, I was then told the managers had been on holiday for a week so that’s why they hadn’t called me. If I had not so vehemently objected to being blamed for our evening being cancelled I doubt I would have been told this. After this disappointment I didn’t really want to go to sip and tuck anymore but I thought I would give them another chance and they were generally good. So this year I decided to give the festive supper club another go. I booked the table for 6 people way in advance in November and paid our non-refundable deposit of £60 (£10 each). Now I take a deposit to mean money you won’t get back if you don’t turn up or give less than 24 hours notice. Unfortunately one of our friends couldn’t make it, and when they rang up to get our menu choices 12 days before the meal I told them there would only be 5 of us. 12 days notice, 12 days!!! I assumed this was enough notice to move tables around and fill empty spaces, seeing as they were still advertising tables for the festive supper club on 7th December on the 1st December (see photo attached from their Instagram account), that’s only 6 days before the event, we gave double that notice. So I assumed the extra £10 deposit we paid would come off the total price of the meal as we weren’t told any differently. I was wrong. After a pleasant meal with good wine and average service we were told we would lose £10 of our deposit because one person didn’t show up. Despite them not wasting food as they didn’t have to order it in the first place (because we told them 12 days before!) and not having round tables to put 5 people round (we would have had an empty 6th place on our table anyway, even if we had always booked for 5 because of the layout of the tables and their shape), and despite giving them loads of business over the last couple of years, they still refused to return our £10 deposit. I visited when I was in Colchester. Myself and my husband had breakfast, I had the three egg omelette and my husband had the Sip & Tuck breakfast.

Visited this lovely little cafe after a tour of Colchester Castle on a cold December morning. This warm welcoming cafe was perfect. Great vegan options, I had vegan fish and chips which were really tasty and delicious, my companions chose the vegan burger and pronounced it excellent. We had the most wonderful coffee and absolutely stunning chocolate fudge cake to follow. Service was brilliant and we will certainly return on our next visit to Colchester. Loved it!

Came here for a child free breakfast with my boyfriend lovely place great coffee lots of options , I really wanted a toasted sandwich but they only had gluten free rolls not bread to be fair to the nice server they did say they would try and make it with a roll but it’s not the same.The bacon roll I chose was really good,my boyfriend said the three egg omelette was pretty tasty will be back.

We popped in here on Sunday for lunch. I did reserve a table and just as well, they were so busy - which is always a good sign. Had to have coffee as it always tastes perfect as they are hand crafted and we had a sausage bap and a bacon bap. Despite being full of customers it wasn’t long before our food arrived. The baps were very tasty and good quality bacon and sausages were used. Fantastic friendly service. We would always recommend Sip and Tuck if you want coffee, cakes, breakfast or lunch. Thank you.

Was recommended to try this place and so glad I did! The food was flavourful and delicious! I had the breakfast burrito and my partner had a bacon baguette. The coffee was very good. I now understand why I was told you have to book a table as it was buzzing while we were there! sign of a popular successful place to be so consistently busy. I will definitely be returning
