The worst and most expensive roast beef dinner I have had, tough elastic beef, sloppy watery spinach, and god knows what they did to the roast poatoes, black brown and texture of boiled potatoes, a pint of flat warm lemonade from a big plastic bottle, the waitress kept repeating with a scowl that service was not included, I went with a friend after listening to someone famous reminisce about his childhood memories of this place, I understand that it is smack bang in the City of London and assumed that they did not like our appearance and thus the hostile reception and the terrible food. Will never return.

Food as always was excellent. You’ll never leave this place hungry. Such a charming spot. A real city institution for a traditional English lunch of meat chops. My only criticism is that some of clientele are far too loud snd should be asked to pipe down.

This place is a hidden gem in Bank; the food is awesome, especially the mixed grill and the stewed cheese, unique and above any expectation with a few drops of Worcester sauce, as our waiter (who was super kind and super nice) suggested. It is a must go if you are in the neighborhood.

Super recomendo!

Lunched here again on 17/8 this time as a group of seven. We had an excellent time as always. This is such a unique establishment which does not change. Good wholesome food at very reasonable prices and a good wine list. Great atmosphere and we were very well looked after by the excellent Benjamin with his exceedingly cheery banter! We were pleased to answer Yes 7 times to the question 'would you like a sausage with that sir'. Will definitely be back.

Very nice steak. Had rump, not the most expensive cut, but it was done very well. Seasoning was on point, chips were great, beer was nice and the atmosphere at lunch (2 pm ) was pretty solid. Great waiter. Dunno, pretty perfect really. Only downside was that although the benches look the part, ultimately they weren't very comfortable. Top marks though.

Hidden gem of a pub in the City of London. Following a walking tour of the area with friends, this was a perfect restaurant for lunch. We sat in the restaurant upstairs which was very busy on a Friday lunchtime. Lovely, noisy atmosphere. Traditional old bench seating which wasn’t particularly comfortable but was in Keeping with the history of the building. Steak and Kidney pie was large and tasty as was the cauliflower cheese and bubble and squeak sides. Prices were reasonable and the quality food was good value for money. Friendly waiter and good service. Will definitely visit again.

Was excited to try this place, but the experience went sideways from the start. Go for the history, but don't order food. You might put out the staff, get dirty dishes, overpriced, gristle-laden meat (with an odd smell), Warburton's toastie as "bread" side, and not even the pleasure of the wine you asked to accompany the meal. Or you might have a different experience, but I won't return to try to find otherwise.

We stopped by this lovely little tavern for a quick lunch on the off chance they had a table. The staff were so professional and helpful and seated us in no time. The food was delicious and arrived quickly, we had the ham, egg and chips - all elements of which were perfect. Very traditional menu and done very well. The place is steeped in history having been there since 1757, which really adds to the atmosphere. It’s tucked away down a little alley so the untrained eye may miss it, but I’d urge anyone to give it a go - we will certainly be back! Big thank you to the lady running the place, so kind and informative.

Went there for a Christmas lunch, staff appeared rushed, no attention to detail. Starters were put on the table, no cutlery, had to get our own! Starter of ham hock terrine was tasteless. Having almost finished it, we were then given sliced bread toast to go with it. Main course was average, plenty of food but canteen style and nothing special. When it came to dessert, we didn’t get what we’d ordered, just a mix of whatever was left. It’s not the most expensive but even at £40 a head, at least give us what we ordered. Having eaten there many times, I’m disappointed to see the place slip. I feel it’s just become a money making venue, hoping to cling on to regular customers who always eat there. Come on, you are much better than that.

We tried to book a table for lunch on-line, but this wasn't working. We also left a telephone message for a return call in order to book a table, but there was no return call to our request. However, this didn't matter as we went early and we were lucky enough to get a table/ booth after waiting for less than 2 mins. The food was excellent and met my expectations. I was offered, as per tradition, a sausage with my steak. The apple crumble for dessert reminded me of my mother's, so all very good. We did have to share our booth later, but this was explained to us very clearly when we sat down, as it can get busy at lunch times, but this actually made the experience better, as the conversation with our 'table partners' was all part of a wonderful experience. The Staff were extremely helpful, jolly & polite. I would highly recommend this place as it is steeped in history and after we wandered around the small adjoining 'city'alleyways which just topped it off to make a shear delightful all round experience.

Packed with city workers at lunch, we were initially put on a tiny table with the fixed bench so close to the table I was scared that post eating, they would need an industrial size jar of Vaseline and a winch to get me out. Luckily, the adjacent table for 4 didn't show, so we were moved. That said, it's not exactly comfortable and doesn't encourage lingering. It's old school menu is great and not remotely overpriced. Smoked salmon had a coarse cut suggesting it was sliced on the premises, and was absolutely supreme. Forget all the poncey "gin cures" - this was bold and bright and wonderfully smokey. A very juicy sirloin at £13.95 was a bargain (though a little nearer well done than medium, as ordered), and the chips were double cooked perfection. Partner allowed himself to be bullied into a "sausage with that" - I resisted, and we shared it. Excellent sausage it was, too. Service was incredibly attentive and very cheery indeed. Overall, the best "traditional" type place we've been for a long time, for a lot less money than Guinea Grill and many others of the ilk. Oh, and they have Aspalls on draught. What more can you ask?!

Love the history, but food was a major letdown. Simpson Tavern is a buzzing old style pub, there is normally a queue and I expected some great British pub food. We were a group of 6, I had the home made pie which looked like a plate of dog food and tasted much worse. My colleagues had items from the grill that looked OK but was very dry. We were constantly brought drinks and dishes we did not order and had £20 worth of sausages added to the bill. The service is slow and haphazard, the servers didn't have a clue about the menu or drinks. Over all will not go again, and if you do stay away from the food.

This bread also accompanied the cheese pot. Maybe the bread should change to enhance the taste of the food. I had York Ham (fantastic) chips (crispy and fluffy) served with eggs that I assumed came from a Bantam the yolks were so small !! really pathetic and a whole meal ruined by one ingredient.
