The best fish and chips I’ve had in years, and my friends agreed. Everything made fresh to order so you can wait a while to get your food, but the wait is definitely worth it. Nice touch that you get offered a wedge of lemon with the fish supper, and the homemade tartare sauce is AMAZING! If you’re lucky with the weather you can pop across the road to the braes and eat your food on the banks of the Tay (maybe even catch a famous Tay sunset if you time it right!) Highly recommended.

A proper Fish and Chip shop! Busy on a Monday night is a good sign that others agree. Good fresh chunky haddock(s) cooked in light and crispy golden batter is the food of the gods.

Went here last night as we were running late and didn’t have time to make anything. Being from Perth we haven’t been here before so popped in. The place was lovely and clean and the 2 young ladies behind the counter were very nice. I ordered a haggis supper and a smoked sausage supper. I was delighted to see the smoked sausage microwaved instead of deep fried. We went out the back to eat in the car. I had 2 portions of haggis and a tonne of chips. Same with the sausage supper. I couldn’t manage it all but did notice they do smaller portions. That will be for my next visit. The food was delicious and I would definitely return.

We have been very regular customers for years. For much of this time the food was consistently good, although portion sizes were often variable. In the last year or so the quality of the fish on offer has diminished, both in terms of size and taste. For us, the most recent order of fish and chips on 4 May 2023 ranks as the worst fish and chips we've ever had. The batter was burnt, the fish miniscule, tasteless and stuck to the batter. Unfortunately, based on the progressive decline in quality, and this most recent offering, we have decided we won't be returning. We're disappointed as we like to support local businesses.

Staying in the area for an overnight. It was such a lovely sunny day that after a few drinks we thought we’ll have fish&chips out in the sun. I had actually done a bit of research and new about this place but it totally exceed expectations. Made fresh, good portion size with both the fish and chips cooked to perfection. The batter was so light but with a lovely crisp finish and that slightly wet underside. And you’ve got to get the homemade tartare sauce - yum! Superb!

With so much call on our money, we are looking for decent value in a takeaway but sadly the last offering included smaller than small fish. The breaded fish was dry and the pizza was battered though this was not ordered. Looking for a very fresh juicy white fish..didn't get it on this occasion.

The Silvery Tay is a part of Newport life that we always look forward to experiencing whenever we return to Newport-on-Tay. The portions are ample, the fish is always tender and the peas are deliciously mushy! We especially relish the 'suppers' Hamish serves. Highly recommended. Being accustomed to Fife having some chip shops that are unbeatable in quality. I expect good quality. This stands very high up in quality of Fish & Chips. Staff didn't seem upto very much in terms of "service with a smile" but certainly worked efficiently to get the customers in and out the door. Food was lovely. Didn't notice any bones in the haddock compared to some other places I have tried in the past. Light crispy batter on the fish that was cooked fresh. Chips to fish ratio was adequate to say the least. Especially at a price of around £7+ for a fish supper. Be sure if you're going to charge similar prices to some of the best chip shops in scotland, then be sure to match their overall standards in service & portions etc. Also noticed a random sign that humoured me. Something to the effect of only being able to sell fritters on like 3 days of the week? Umm why? Hilarious. None the less even through being critical on some minor issues this was overall a very good food experience and would return without a doubt. 4/5.

Well, I'll tell you now, that Hamish from The Silvery Tay is bloody lucky he still has his head and teeth intact!!! Firstly, he was extremely rude when we placed a very large order. First thing mum asked for was a battered chicken supper, then started to read from the list, to which Hamish said " give me the list, it will be easier" to which mum replied no, because the list had changed slightly. He said " well, would you remember if I told you that list!!!" Well, mum gave him the list as so shocked at his attitude. Then we got to the counter and the Wee lass had the list and read it out, we noticed that there was no chicken supper there, to which Hamish bashed in and shouted "you didn't ask for one!!!" And then proceeded to argue with us across the counter, said well, we all can't be perfect like yous and remember an order among other abuse!!! I then said we wouldn't be back and other customers stood there in shock at the abuse. Anyway,we get our order and he then tried to apologise in a very patronised manner. "If you don't come back, then that's your prerogative!!!" By that point, I had enough and told him to f off and walked out. Get back and we all start digging in. Mine and Linzi pizza and chips drowning in oil, as was Hayley's dinner, then Liam finds this sticker still on his fish!!!! Disgusting and feeling very ill now. Dinner was binned, but still taste the grease!!! Won't be back!! #thesilverytay

What a treat!...there was so much delicious fishy loveliness that it fed all 4 adults, 2 hungry kids and with some left over for the cats too!Now we are resident in the area, I can't wait for more tasty delights...although my waistline might disagree! :)

Kids would eat from here every night if they could!!! Super fish and chips at reasonable prices - the regular queue down the high street says it all

Lovely fish suppers and a good size to satisfy a big appetite. Very popular chippy. The queue is usually away down the street. Would recommend this chippy.

We have been here a few times coming back from St Andrews. The service is always quick and the fish and chips is always very hot and tastes fresh.

Very busy fish and chip shop. Big menu, including unusual Scottish items such as red pudding and deep fried burgers! All food cooked to order and our haddock suppers were excellent. The "standard" supper included TWO fillets of haddock! Friendly service despite a short wait as it was so busy on Saturday tea time. Ate them on nearby pebbly beach at Wormit bay. Highly recommended.

Not a huge fan of going to a chippy - this one however is just fantastic. You have to visit this place at least once in your life!

Always stop here for a carry out of fish & chips if we are on our way home from a trip, as always the service quick and orders are cooked while you wait. No matter if its fish, pies, pizzas or chipsteaks everything is always pipping hot and served quickly. This shop along with the sister shop in Dundee is always worth a vist if you fancy a great chip shop carry out. To have some fish with a view over the silvery Tay, and great scenery not far from its front door there isn't much more you can ask for.

A bit of the beaten track but worth it. If this café was in the city centre, it would be packed out every day! We enjoyed lovely, freshly made sandwiches in a cosy atmosphere and took some delicious cakes home. I hadn’t been for a while but it’s every bit as nice as I remember, we’ll definitely be back.

We didn't stay but went for lunch one Sunday. We booked but several groups turned up without booking and were able to get a table. The menu is the usual pub grub but nicely presented and service was quick. Ae chose the roast beef, meatball and curry with icecream and coffee to follow. All very tasty The welcome and service were frienly and efficient and the dining room light airy and spacious.

What a disappointment. I found the Bothy at Boglily on TA, loved the look of the place, the gorgeous photos of cooked food on their site and the good reviews. We are doing a road trip and this was going to be our Sunday morning treat. The car park was jammed with cars and we saw people standing in a queue to pet baby goats. Upon entering the inviting Bothy and asking a young man for a table, we were told that we couldn’t bring our dog in. Fair enough. Not every dining establishment is dog-friendly. Though I was a bit surprised as the restaurant is in a buffalo farm, there’s a petting zoo and it’s in the countryside. The sun was shining so I asked if we could order our meal and sit at the table on the deck, directly next to the door of The Bothy (see photo for proximity). The young man’s response was that they don’t offer takeaway. I queried whether a table one step from the door qualified as takeaway. It reminded me of the TV ad with the man trying to buy potatoes at a farm shop and being told that he can only pay with digital currency. People taking themselves so seriously that they don’t think of the customer experience. We had driven up from our holiday cottage at Kinghorn especially to get a nice cooked breakfast from their lovely menu, so my surprise and disappointment were apparent. I was directed to the outdoor kiosk they call the Milk Bar to order something from their limited selection. We ordered one Double Cheese Toastie with fries, a latte, an affogato milkshake ( made with buffalo milk ice cream) and a scone, which was on their menu. The two lovely servers told me that they don’t sell scones outside and I would have to go to the Bothy Café to get one. When I explained that I had been told up there that I couldn’t get anything from them takeaway, the young woman offered to go get one for me. They were both very sweet and I apologised for my previous grumpiness. Unfortunately, it wasn’t worth the trouble. The cheese toastie and fries were served in a cardboard tray. The toastie was on “cheap white bread” according to my partner. I didn’t taste it. The fries and the milkshake however, were excellent. My scone was dry, cold and crumbled into breadcrumb texture when I tried to spread some butter on it. The crumb was impossible to pick up and eat but my dog liked it. It wasn’t worth eating for me as it then began to rain and we had to head for the car. I can’t help but think that the very cheerful, welcoming and upmarket website promises more than it delivers.
