Whenever I head to London, always look for the hidden, unusual, spontaneous. Staying near Kings Cross, Shrimpy's was on my radar. Located in a former petrol station, I took advantage of the news that their pop up from 2012 was due to close on Dec 23, 2014 and get there before the demise, as I believe the property is to be sold on. It was the night before I left and, having located the venue during my walk about town, returned that night. Fortunately, I headed 'round the back else I might have missed it. And what a treat it was. I felt somehow privileged to be in such a creative space and greeted with such obvious enthusiasm at my being there. I hadn't booked so was seated at the dining counter, dinette fashion. The staff could not have been more attentive and personable. Their enthusiasm, and dedication, was palpable.Obviously, I went for the soft shell crab burger. Facing the kitchen, I was impressed by the precision with which the chefs worked. Hardly a word and so well orchestrated. I have enjoyed squat lobsters, but never had soft shell crabs but the first bite was glorious- edging thru layers of bacon, rouille and provolone. Yes, I could taste the crab. It's obviously going to be very subtle as these r creatures that have molted their old exoskeleton, which is where a lot of chefs get the flavour and why we r able to eat the soft shells. Still hungry (had missed lunch), ordered the grilled corn on the cob w/harissa butter which was so delish I wanted more(will be grilling corn and trying this at home!) However, I was tempted by the 'Afters' and it had to be peanut butter and banana sandwich. I asked if there was jam with this, one of my favourite sandwiches which I eat for 'afters' and yes. Well, this was worth every £. Not just a sandwich. Brioche, ice cream, p-nut butter, jam, bananas, nuts, drizzle. If I could do this again I would, but I can't. So, thank u Shrimpy's for being there and doing what you did. Soz 2 c u go but so glad I got it.

This place has a very limited menu, so you would expect the few dishes on offer to be exceptional - they're not.We tried all the "Snackettes" as starters. The pig skin and deep fried chillies were quite good, but the chips and dips were a few "crisps" and a bowl of mayo for £4.50!For main course 3 of us chose the soft shell crab burger as it seemed the speciality. It was a deep fried crab in a bun. Tasteless except for the relish and the oil! Very greasy and very bland. At £13.50 with nothing else included it was poor value for money. One of our party had the cheeseburger, which was pretty good and well cooked - but at £11.50 I would hope so too!Plus points are that it is a very interesting building in an up and coming part of London, but there must be better restaurants nearby.

I know London is expensive, but £11.50 for a cheeseburger sitting all by itself on a plate?! Make that £19 (!) if you want to add a green salad and some (unexceptional) fries. Then add the service charge on top... My pork pozole ( = pork stew with hominy) was quite good, but again, it wasn't worth £14.50. A lot of people seem to be raving about this place, but you sit outside in the cold and the dark and pay a lot of money for some very simple food. Be aware they only take payment by card.

severely overpricedTime Out saysPosted: Wed Sep 25 2013This unusually located place (in a disused filling station just north of King’s Cross) was a sensation when it opened in 2012. Word of mouth left thousands gasping for one of the trademark soft-shell crab burgers – and unable to get a table. A year on, bagging a table was dead easy at lunchtime. And our meal made us wonder what all the fuss had been about. There was some pleasing cooking: a bracingly acidic chicory ’slaw with pomegranate, and a boldly spiced hash made with shin of beef. But some food was simply inert. Prawn fritters had a woollen texture within, no crunch without, and vanishingly small prawn content. The real shock came with that famous crab burger: ours was simply crunchy batter with a vaguely marine taste, given most of its character by chilli sauce and dwarfed by a pillow-sized (and tasteless) soft roll. Shrimpy’s is due to shuffle off in 2014, when the site is redeveloped. It’s a shame we’ll be deprived of such a nice-looking venue, but the gastronomic loss is nothing to lose sleep over.

Shrimpy is not the Mexican place you'd except, which in a way was quite a good surprise as Mexican places can sometimes be quite tacky. The food menu has strong Latino connotations though you can still order the usual cheeseburger (I didn't dare ordering the double one, which was as high as a building really). I loved the Jimaca & orange salad, unusual and tasty. The Wild mushrooms mole arepa wasn't available on the day I went (out of 6 mains in total I thought that was quite disappointing) but the quality of the products made up for.I didn't get to try any cocktails but the list was as long as it was appealing :)You can sit outside on long tables with friends and family right by Regents Canal. That's a massive plus!I'll be back.

Pared down and utilitarian with a twist. Trendy clientele and waiters. Small restaurant inside glass walls and outdoor seating and a terrace area, and more long-table and bench seating and bar where the petrol pumps and filling up were. All enclosed in large 'corrugated' plastic/resin/fibreglass moulded panels with canal-side open. A spacious and light place hang out in for the brunch/lunch. Excellent cocktails (we stuck with bloody maries, moscow mules, negronis and pisco sours - avoid the house Shrimpy's fizz which was far too sour). Food was delicious with solid and spiced flavours - we ordered to share and had the spiced chicken, pork pozole, softshell crab burger and humita and plenty of sides. All very good. The ice-cream and brownie dessert can be skipped - ice-cream and brownie are supermarket quality. Pancake with dulce de leche was a better pick.

All the reviews here are spot on. It's a great location in a converted petrol station. This area round Kings Cross and the canal is being developed and thanks to the art colleges moving here is currently süpercool. But the food is average and stodgy. I had the soft-shell crab burger which was way too greasy. Other people had pork stew, macaroni cheese etc. It was all OK, not great. Had dinner with friends at Shrimpy's on Monday night. The setting was nice from the exterior and handy for Kings X but the restaurant smelt bad when we arrived. I don't know if our waitress was new but she struggled to take our basic order from a very short menu, was void of personality and barely looked up from her IPad ordering device. When pouring the wine she leant over my friends face and made no effort to engage with us - she made everyone around the table feel uncomfortable and even taking an order for 4 coffees was an ordeal. The food arrived and was fine - nothing special and seemed expensive for what we had. During the meal we were plagued with barfly until another member of staff sprayed fly spray as we ate - the strong smell was just about enough to overpower the smell from the porta-loos. We left the restaurant at 10.30pm - at this time we were the only people there and the staff all hovered around making us feel uncomfortable and obviously keen to close.

We came across shrimpys and loved it from the moment we entered the terrace area; laid back, quirky and comfy vibe with great tunes. The bar man was friendly and let us try both frozen cocktails before we ordered. Our intentions were to just to stay for a drink; ended up spending the whole afternoon there with lunch at the restaurant on the terrace. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food (omg) was fabulous; soft shell crab burger with avo and chilli sauce, fries and a cucumber, pickle, chilli & maple syrup slaw! It was just to die for! The coffee was superb too. All in all a fantastic experience. I cannot wait to return. Thank you for a memorable experience.

Having struggled to find good Mexican or S American food in London, stumbled upon Shrimpy's and was very impressed. The food is terrific. And more than that, our party included some very specific food restrictions (dairy, gluten, citrus) and we were given very caring help. And more than THAT: I desperately needed a Spanish train ticket to be printed (I was en route and no access to a printer) and the manager kindly printed out my tickets for me! And as I left I heard him cheerfully helping someone recharge their phone. And all this on a pleasant outdoor spot by a canal, on a summer's day.All my party were very impressed, and declared the intention to return. Top marks!

Superb food, plenty of interesting foods to sample such as the Chicharon snack & the Jicama & orange salad which all tasted great! The chicken wings should not be missed and the skirt steak was cooked to perfection and absolutely mouth watering. Cocktails looked great although we didn't have any (big regret!) and instead we watered our mouths with prosecco and wine which were fabulous! Service and ambience is very fun but yet it can be formal with the inside dining area tables laid out classical as apposed to outside which has a more informal feel. Would highly recommend it to friends especially in the summer months!!

Will be recommending that all my friends and colleagues do not go here! We booked a table 2 weeks in advance over the telephone. When we arrived they tried to seat us at the bar, then tried to move us outside. I booked by phone because I wanted a table! Attitude of the woman who dealt with us was shocking. The waiters/waitresses here seem to believe their customers are beneath them. I think they need to remember people are spending money here! Food was mediocre at best. Massively overpriced. It's just burger and fries. You can get better and cheaper elsewhere. Wish we hadn't paid the service charge. Didn't even get a goodbye or a thank you when we left. My advice is don't treat customers like you are doing them a favour. Ultimately it's the other way round!

Dear Shrimpy'sI just wanted to write into to say how much we enjoyed lunch the other day! My good friend and I spent a couple hours enjoying the food, service and vibe on bank holiday Monday that just passed, and although it was the 3rd time I have been, the quality of everything was as tip top as when I first came! The bbq wings were some of the nicest wings I have ever eaten (and the highlight of the meal), the soft shell crab burger with avocado was a nice light filling main (the batter was exceptional - not greasy at all, light and crispy!) Great combination of ingredients and flavour. Really refreshing side dishes with a shout out to the apple, lime, chilli combo! Only down points were that I would prefer more complimentary beers on the menu (not sure if thats the direction of drink you want at such a place) but maybe a lighter or wheat beer would be a nice addition. Plus the chips were salted far too much for me (something I have noticed to be 'a thing' at a lot of places recently??)The food is great, the waiting staff/front of house were attentive and efficient, speed of service being bang on and the vibe continuing to be one of London's finest. There is a saying that a girl with a fine body but does not have a very attractive face is a shrimp, as you would keep the body but throw away the head. This however, is one shrimp I like the whole look of!4.5 stars out of 5!Look forward to experiencing Shrimpy's again on a nice warm evening, hopefully in a couple weeks!

Three of us ate here on Friday night. Service was really helpful and knowledgeable right from when we sat down. They have a really interesting cocktail menu, so had a couple of those a nd a few beers between us. The chicken wings as starters were excellent, as was the cerviche. We all had the soft shell crab burger, which was very good, great flavours with the accompaniments. Sides-wise, the waitress recommended the humita which was an excellent mashed and spiced corn. We had a good evening, but without even having much to drink, and no desserts, it came to £50 each, as the burgers do not come with chips, and there is a service charge. Would go back, and would recommend it, just a bit steep...

We had dinner here before a concert at King's Place on Saturday evening. The restaurant is small and quirky and packed full of great ideas both on and off the menu. The interior is really unusual in a 50's surf meet 2014 kind of way and the service is efficient and pleasantly friendly. The whole place is staffed by people who care about what they're doing - essential in a kitchen but so often overlooked for service. And it's just a second's walk from King's Place! Shrimpy's is a semi-permanent pop-up restaurant down by Regent's Canal near King's Place. It's perfect if you are going to a concert in the evening. We were looking for something a bit different, and found this fit the bill. We had a table for four inside, which was great since the weather wasn't good. With many tables outside, I'm guessing business is best in the good weather. We found the service excellent and plenty of it. The food was tasty, albeit a bit expensive for what we were buying. Thus I'd say it isn't greatest value for money, but good if you are looking for a "find". I very much enjoyed our meal and experience there.

I then opted for the crab burger which was tasty (although a few recognisable crab extensions might slightly alarm some including me). Great side orders so we were certainly not hungry. The wine we chose was tasty and not too expensive. This restaurant is due to close at the end of the year (redevelopment of the area), so enjoy it while you can. It will be particularly pleasant in the summer, as there is a large outdoor terrace by the canal. The interior is a little cramped, particularly, I imagine, if you eat at the bar. We had reserved a table for lunch, when the prix fixe is currently £17.50 for two courses, which was reasonable value for the quality of the food we chose from an interesting menu: deliciously lightly spiced chicken wings and an octopus and chorizo dish as starters, followed by roast cod and a skirt steak (bavette), expertly cooked to follow. Good wines by the glass. The service excellent, perhaps even a little too assiduous when we were there. Overall an enjoyable experience.

We reserved a table for dinner before a concert next door at Kings Place, which was good value with the pre 6 PM prix fixe menu. Atmosphere a bit quirky with paintings of contorted giraffes on the wall - but comfortable. Service was excellent, attentive but not in your face. Food and wine very good - I had the clam-and-ham chowder which was excellent, although it would have been better in a smaller, deeper bowl so it remained hot while I ate it. The soft-shell crab burger which followed was also delicious, and my side salad was lovely, ultra fresh lettuce and very large portion size. My husband enjoyed his squash, cream cheese and spinach salad, and his spiced ox cheeks and corn bread. He still had room for dessert, and was pleased with his choice of the dulce de leche crepes. Wines by the glass were excellent - an Argentine pinot gris and a Spanish crianza. Overall a very positive experience, and we are already looking forward to returning.

Wow. Just wow. In a bad way. Sat at the food bar, we were nose to nose with an irritable chap making drinks whose constant HARRUMPHING was not exactly relaxing. His impatient glares when we ordered were turned up to 11 when we had the audacity to order just some chips and a starter initially; yes we were hungry but before you elicit 15 from me for a BURGER I would like some evidence that it might be worth it, if that is OK please Harrumphy. It was not OK. As he sullenly documented our order on his freaking Ipad it occurred to me that the extortioniate prices might have more to do with the Nathan Barleyesque idea that an overpriced status computer might be somehow better than a notepad for taking orders in a damp environment. The food was predictably underwhelming. Harrumphy continued to embarrass himself. Then we were presented with a 40 pound bill for a bottle of wine and practically no food. We went home for a nicer bottle of wine and a fried egg sandwich.Shrimpy's stands as a giant flashing neon symbol of everything that is wrong with pop-up culture. Gaudy, uncomfortable and painfully cool; puncture the gloss and find nothing within but packing material and a shifty looking little imp making money hand over fist from people who are too desperate to notice that they are being fleeced.

This place is awful. The location is very odd for a start, you actually have to walk round the back to find the entrance. Also despite being located in an old filling station, the place is tiny. Literally it looks busy because there's no room. If you fancy being a sardine then this is the place to be. I went there and ate the soft shell crab burger. I had seen pictures of this item on various websites and was looking forward to devouring what I thought would be a tasty little morsel!!! WRONG!!! What I ate was bland over priced rubbish. There was no spice on the soft shell crab patty and the seafood sauce was not freshly made. On top of that my fries were clearly cooked in the same oil as the soft shell burger making them taste fishy. Yuck!!! The burger is £12.95, but you are charged a discretionary charge as well. If the burger had been nice I wouldn't have minded, but really there is a reason as to why this restaurant is so lowly ranked. If you want to eat a nice piece of soft shell go elsewhere.

Food quite good- burgers and buckets of fried fish etc, veggie options, beer and frozen margaritas. Not cheap- but not expensive. Quite busy and lively. The restaurant is pricier, greater range of food on the menu- still based on the USA/ west coast type of fusion foods. Friendly service, perhaps a little slow, but we were clearly not in a hurry. It might be nicer in summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the canal view but in mid-winter we were stuck inside the small cramped interior, squeezed six on a table that really could only seat four, assaulted by loud music and equally loud background noise (I could not hear what my friend on the other end of the small table was shouting). The menu is an eclectic mix (read strange). The best value is the 3-course offer which works out cheaper than any two courses but when I looked at the starters and desserts there was nothing which caught my eye so I went for a simple main course only.Service varied from overbearing while we were trying to sit down, get our coats off, say hello to each other and read the menus, to sparse once we actually wanted to order.Taking the order via iPad was a bit of trendy theatre. It was a technology tail wagging a service dog because the waitress took at least five times as long tapping through menus, ignoring us, than she would have done with a pen and paper. The food when it arrived was excellent. You could tell some thought and passion had gone into its preparation cooking and overseeing; well done chef.Pricey too. And be warned, in the small print they say they don't take cash.

Overall I would recommend it for a trendy location on say a date but not somewhere to recommend for a foodie. Not worth the hype.

Recommended, booked in advance Saturday before Christmas -birthday celebration ,didn't need to only a few diners, cold and un atmospheric. Not a Christmas decoration in sight.Food average, above average prices, menu very restricted.Service good although, kept filling your glasses, could do with coats being taken as you arrive, rather than having to put them on the rail yourself.Manager asked for our comments as we left and I told him,he wished we had told him earlier, not sure what he would have done. Not intending to return.

Ate here before a comedy gig on a Friday night with friends. Had a really nice fried cheese dish but needed the taco chips to make me filled up. The service was slow though which would have be ok if it was faultless. However, one friends had to ask twice for the milk to go with her coffee and the side dish my friend ordered was forgotten and never arrived. Couldn't help thinking the staff would have been better off using the traditional notepad and pens rather than fancy iPad minis. They might look good but they weren't v effective.

We had great difficulty finding the restaurant and were half an hour late when we got there. The staff are welcoming and witty and the food was tasty and enjoyable. The soft shell crab burger is to be recommended. An extra bonus is the view onto the laser christmas tree which is projected from the restaurant onto the gable of an adjacent building. It is very clever and really good fun.

We didn't eat here. We were doing some work across the canal for a film night and faniced getting away for half an hour for a cup of tea. The Filling Station was only a short walk so we popped in there, but did not expect the £3.50 price tag for a cup of tea. It beggars belief that this is thought to be acceptable, and I don't care how cool this area is meant to be, or how rare the tea supposedly is, I wouldn't, if my tongue was about to fall out with thirst pay £3.50 for some hot water and a tea bag.I can't comment on the taste of the food, but it looked quite good and the more reasonably priced coffee was very nice! Please get over yourselves and this really tedious need of being really expensive as if to prove your worth. It's not cool.

A very novel building! Free wi-fi too! We went for drinks and dessert on a late afternoon. Staff were all very friendly. There was a mistake with my drink order but quickly rectified by our apologetic server. I had a virgin cocktail (hibiscus) and my husband had a prosecco cachaca cocktail. Both very good. Desserts were the meringue (chunks a bit too big but still delicious) and ricotta pancakes with pecan butter (really filling). We will come back and try their burgers next time as they looked very tasty. Fun but relaxing ambience.

Don't hesitate, don't um, don't ah. Just get yourself down to Shrimpy's.We went early on a tuesday night, and got the before 6pm meal deal, we both had the soft shell crab burger, that has to be one of the best burgers that I've had in a very very long time. It was erm.....EPIC. The food was really interesting, great menu with not a lot on it. Perfect for me as i'm useless with decisions in restaurants. All the food seemed really interesting, I could have eaten anything on the menu. Our starters were great and our deserts were great as well.Really interesting location, I imagine that it gets busy on a summers evening, but on an October Tuesday early evening it was quite and a bonus with the meal deal. Also the service was very good and spot on as well. Overall a great interesting place with outstanding food. I would go again, and again, and again.

Fast becoming one of my favourite places to eat in London. Great location just north of Kings Cross in an innovative convertion of a former petrol station. The restaurant probably only has 30 covers inside However, there is additional seating outside heating in the sheltered forecourt, which has been great on the two occasions I have visited (September & October)The staff are really friendly and there is a really relaxed vibe to the place. The menu isn't the most extensive however, the dishes I have sampled have all been really well executed.

I think I disagree with most of the reviews here. We went to Shrimpy's last night, and found the food, atmosphere and service to be very agreeable. We liked the arty decor and retro feel had a chatty and attentive waitress from Cork, who explained the menu to us in an informative way and turned out to be an aspiring fashion-designer. I had the hallmark soft-shell crab burger which was delicious, and we drank a perfectly nice bottle of the house red. The pricing is slightly ambitious but overall I felt it was very pleasant experience and would definitely go back again.

The location and curvaceous glass building were certainly interesting..Although the star attraction, the soft shell crab burger..... It was yuk, or at best nothing special, just a squished, deep fried crab, smeared with provolone cheese and a rash of bacon in a standard sesame seed bun, the accompanying chips felt that they had been fried in old oil.. Our mouths felt greasy and uncomfortable for many hours afterwards...The cocktails were OK, the service chatty and friendly. Our experience was that of an expensive, overcomplicated, overhyped and uninspiring restaurant...

We live nearby and had been meaning to try this place for a while. It occupies a great spot on the canal and (joy of joys) gets the evening sun.We went for the early bird dinner - 3 courses ordered before 6pm for £17.50. Pretty good value if you compare it to the full prices, but still not entirely sure we got our money's worth. Portions are very, very small and it's one of those places where you probably want to order sides as well.I had the squid to start, which was slightly flavourless. My husband's prawn fritters were great, though. My main, the provolone croquettes, was delicious. For pudding I had the manchego cheese... Which was OK, but a dull choice compared to my husband's banana and peanut butter sandwich. The thing that was really disappointing, for us at least, was that almost everyone there seemed really... unhappy somehow. This place seems to attract the fashion student types (it's right by the new St Martins campus), so there's lots of peacock-ing going on. I don't know why, but I just didn't get the sense that anyone was having any real fun. The place looks like how you should feel if you're on holiday, all palm trees and cocktails, but I just wanted to get the bill and go to the pub. For a sensibly priced, normal-sized drink (I paid £10 for a "Shrimpy Fizz" that came in a doll-sized glass and wasn't as nice as plain cava). We won't be coming back, but I don't think they'll mind.

The starters were tastless the Crab burger was bland and with all the extra's you had to order and the smallest dessert of cherry pie you have ever seen it came to over £200 for 4 of us! and that was only with one bottle of wine. Also the toilets had no running water except in the disabled and I can say from experience in the trade I was surprised they were allowed to open, save you money

We went on an impromptu visit here with a group of friends. We had all heard about this place, and were excited by the location and the menu. Luckily we went there AFTER 10pm, which meant we could get the 'Three-Courser' - 3 courses (duh!) for £17.50 - which is a great deal when you look at the individual prices. I have to say, after eating the food, I was so glad we got the deal, as the food was good - but definitely not worth what the full price would have been.As we went in after 10pm (for the deal) we were the ONLY people in the restaurant, but it was obvious the staff just wanted to go home and unfortunately the service was pretty shabby. Its a great shame, because the food IS good. Went to Shrimpys last night due to the great Time Out review. I wouldn't return if I was paid. The whole place is like a caravan, I guess that's what you get when you visit a pop up restaurant. But what made it more 'caravan' for me was the overwhelming smell of ammonia due to old male wee which filled the entire toilet area. Maybe it was a bad move to use the toilet before I ate! When the overpriced food arrived, I wished I'd left The restaurant after using the toilet. 'Plantain, chips and dips' was basically some nacho crisps out of a packet but about 5 plantain chips in there. Tasteless and boring. I can't even bare to tell you about the rest of the 'meal' as it was as dull as the aforementioned chips and dips. The bill totalled a huge £140 for 3 people to sit on bar stools (which were screwed to the floor) at a bar, with a bottle of wine and 2 cocktails. In summary, overpriced, underwhelming caravan styleee food. Don't bother!

We went to shrimpy's this past week after reading reviews on trip advisor. After eating there, I would say that the average reviews are spot-on. We got the soft shell crab burger. I got the fries and my wife got the macaroni and cheese. We both got soft drinks. The bill came to $48 U.S. dollars. Now, I don't know whether or not that is resonable for London but it seems like a lot to me for what we got. The crab sandwich was okay and my wife's macaroni and cheese tasted scortched. She didn't eat but I did since I was hungry. The crab meat was almost non-existant and hidden somewhere amongst the breading. Also, very greasy. If grease upsets your stomach, I recommend that you do not eat this. I must say though, the fries were good although I gave my wife my fries when she could not eat her macaroni and cheese.

Great matre-de & serving staff although not enough of them. Known for their 'soft shell-crab burger' which is really average with not much actual crab. And shockingly the place is trying to be so cool they don't have any baby high chairs, so hold onto your toddlers if you're uncool enough to have kids! Went just after 7 without a reservation on a Saturday evening. Manager(young man) happily showed us a menu and immediately confirmed we could have a table but it was booked for 8.30. This was fine as we had really only looked in with a view to returning at a later date and weren't massively hungry. Absolutely delightful young Irish girl(Laura) our waitress and couldn't fault her at all even though she said she was very new to the job. Water(tap!) and wine bought promptly and complimentary fried corn which was surprisingly tasty. Both chose the crab burger (didn't realise until later that this was the signature dish) and agreed it was unusual if not obviously'crabby' and certainly couldn't detect the avocado that I think was also meant to be a key ingredient. Green side salad pleasant, clean and fresh taste, not drowned in dressing. Enjoyed the food but didn't think it was exceptional or that it really merited the cost. But,all in all, a most enjoyable experience and we'd like to return. It's clearly 'on the celeb radar'-Stephen Fry there on same evening, but does seem to have its own'buzz' anyway.Laura was a hoot as well as being an excellent waitress, and the manager was relaxed and professional and seemed genuinely interested in our views.

Went on a quiet Monday evening, party of 5 arrived spot on opening with no reservation, and was seated quickly. Heston Blumenthal was there socialising and eating with friends before the opening time, so we thought this will be great, if its good enough for him its good enough for us...........must have what he's had! However all downhill from there..........staff are nice and friendly but untrained, wrong drinks sent over, wrong food delivered, and they had no idea as to who had ordered what. Wrong cutlery supplied, sauces missing from the dishes supplied etc etc, clearly no systems in place and no adequate training as they were all fairly new to their roles. Front desk manned by a great looking young lady who spent the entire time preening herself, sticking out her chest from her too tight dress, and eye flirting with all the customers, Asking her to do anything or help was a waste of time, so overall you feel that the place is not being managed at all.Sad really as the food and the drinks once correctly supplied was really very nice, handy and Central if you around Kings Cross and a different place to stop by, nice outdoor area and outside bar for a quick drink. All in all, a very enjoyable evening - looks great and the staff are attentive and dress the part. Liked the salt cod croquettes, the three mains - Softshell Crab burger, Beef Skirt and Seafood pot were all good, but no real 'wow' factor - best of the the three the Seafood pot. Wine didn't match the price being charged - but I suppose it is London and one of the up and coming places to be. This pop-up certainly has been attracting lots of attention in the media – particularly for one or two “specialities” on the menu.I tried the soft shell crab burger having read one positive review, and found it to be more full of hype than taste. In fact it looked and tasted like deep fried lard, which really is then just a waste of calories. (If you really like soft shell crab – have it neat at Roka for instance). Some of the other dished tried were just OK, but well below my levels of expectation.I would hardly call the venue smart either – it is small to the point of being cramped, on the site of an abandoned petrol station, and overlooking a rather ugly stretch of regents canal. The service was generally good, with the exception of the manager who was arrogant and rude. The bill was hefty, and I think there is better value to be had elsewhere. Feels a little bit like a case of The Kings Cross New Clothes!

We arrived and were made aware that they had run out of 2 of the three burgers offered on the menu. The crab burger was mediocre, the salty batter and spicy sauce overpowered the delicate crab taste. We also had went for the £5 dessert+coffee offer, but waitress did not clarify that offer applied only for filtered coffee only. Itwas a good way for Shrimpy's to get an extra £3.5 out of a customer, but not for repeat business. Boo!

My wife and i and another couple ate here last week. Be aware that they do not normally accept cash payments and unfortunately when we went their credit card system was not working either. We were given some popped corn which was a nice snack to start. The two girls had prawn fritters with a spicy sauce which were delicious but you only got about 6 which meant the £8.50 cost was quite high. I had the crab burger which was well cooked and wonderful. Again £13.50 with no sides was a little pricey. My friend had the chilaquiles which he enjoyed and was perhaps the most reasonably priced dish. With 2 beers 2 soft drinks and service it came to just under £60 for four.Overall an interesting place hidden away behind the Filling Station in Kings Cross.

I love Bistrotheque and had wanted to go to Shrimpy's for ages but we had cancelled twice due to a friend being unable to get away from work, so I was pleased that we were finally going. But on arrival it was fairly clear that the place was not going to be what I expected. It feels like the inside of a portacabin, and the table was too high for the chairs, so I felt a bit like a schoolchild. The photo in the Times makes it look nicer than it is. Yes, it would work on a beach in SoCal, but just looks a bit shabby in Kings Cross. 3 of us shared the calamari with fennel (nothing to write home about) the ceviche (OK but not great, and the sweet potato didn't work with raw fish and citrus), the cod croquettes (these were nasty - we didn't finish them), the quesadilla (tasty but really a nibble - one bite each for £4.50 - these should have been free in the cover), padron peppers (good), and then we had soft-shell crab burgers. These were quite good, but really not amazing, and the fact that they have become the talked-about dish says a lot about the rest. Service was pleasant and unobtrusive, rather than full of the attitude I expected after some of the reviews. Maybe that's because they know nobody is being fooled by the hype any more (although I feel I was...). We had a lovely evening, but that's more down to the company and a few glasses of wine than the venue. The venue certainly didn't detract from our evening, but it didn't wow us either.

If you are looking for a slightly pretentious pseudo-pop-up, Shrimpy is the right place for you.I did not expect a 5* gourmet experience, but something new and unusual, and I got just that. The location is great (a converted petrol station), design/interior mostly nice (exceptthe coloured cartoons painted on the walls, they looks slightly out of place),prompt service, kind and knowledgeable staff - and that's all before youeven open the menu.Menu - overpriced, probably, but a decent choice of odd-sounding dishes, and even the banale-sounding chicken with red pepers is not your averagelunch fare. Having spent a fair bit of time in America's deep south, I know a good Po' Boy from a bad one. At £9.50 (excluding sides), what I received was insulting - a tiny tasteless portion. And I mean really small - this would have been OK on a slider board with 3 items.Others had crab burgers - again, hugely overpriced at £13.50 (plus £4 for fries) and with little crab and lots of batter. The service was average - fairly effecient and plenty of water. I realise that this place only has a 2 year 'pop-up' tennancy, but Bistrotheque must worry that it is seriously damaging their brand. I will not be returning and will certainly think twice before visiting other Bistrotheque establishment. You can't trade on hype alone for long - if the offering doesn't improve soon, I fear this place may be popping down prematurely.

Shrimpy's is a pop-up restaurant that has taken a two-year lease on a former petrol station on the edge of the King's Cross redevelopment site. Finding it is a real initiative test, as it's hidden behind a fiberglass screen designed by the architects Carmody Groarke. Your best clue is the large sign on the roof, "The Filling Station". http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/daily-news/carmody-groarke-unwraps-the-filling-station-in-kings-cross/8631095.articleThe menu is influenced by both southern American and South American food (yes, there is a difference). I haven't quite managed to work my way through the menu, partly because I am repeatedly drawn back to the softshell crab burger. The brioche bun is lightly toasted on the grill, and hidden inside are two battered and fried softshell crabs, some home-made courgette pickle, chili, and avocado. It is incredibly filling, so take it easy on the starter. If you order the tuna tostada, my advice is to leave the tortilla chip and just eat the topping, not because it's too filling, but because the raw fish sits on top of it for just long enough to make the chip chewy and unpleasant. Don't miss the snack of plantain chips, tortilla chips, guacamole and tomato dip.The service there is very charming, though it can get a bit sporadic when the place is really busy. The wine list is very reasonably priced, and there is a good selection of fun cocktails if that's what you are in the mood for. They make a margarita with habanero pepper. I can't say I recommend it. Stick with the classic mixture instead. The tables around the perimeter of the old filling station shop are very comfortable with nice white linen tablecloths. They also have a bar where you can sit on stools and order from the same menu. My advice is don't. The stools are not very comfortable, and as the circulation space is quite limited, other patrons and wait staff and constantly brushing up against those sitting at the bar.Shrimpy's lease runs until May 2014. It's definitely worth making a visit before the developers dismantle the old filling station and build flats.

I have just visited for the second time... I was not disappointed as is often the case when returning to a favoured restaurant.I recommend eating at the counter rather than the tables(only for parties of 3 or more). So dinner for 2 is the way to go, it's tight space wise but worth it.The bar tender Robin made our night extra special by helping/suggesting when required and leaving us alone when not.We tasted several wines on his recommendation (after asking what food we were ordering) and felt comfortable choosing one of the lower priced wines (no pressure whatsoever). The atmosphere is something we really enjoyed and I think this is again, better experienced at the counter. You get to view all the dishes being prepared which really helped us decide what to try. There is a buzz about the place that I can only guess is less prominent at one of the tables.I would return but only as a couple to get the best seats in the house/gas station.

The restaurant is quite small and can be quite loud at time, the buzz is very good but it is not for everyone's taste. I had heard a lot about this restaurant and struggled to get a booking here in 2012 so was delighted to get a chance to go.It is built in the shop of a previous filling station and seeing the number of tables available in the space, I now understand why it was so hard to get a booking before. The menu is ok - quite mexican / south american in its influence in places and looked well presented on the plates coming out. However, having placed main course only orders for our table of three, we then had to wait nearly an hour for the food to arrive, having been told 30 minutes into this that the delay was because my friend had to have a "well done" burger and that this would cause a delay of 5 - 7 minutes. When the food came it was simply average - ok food for slightly expensive prices. When it came to desert, menus were placed in front of two of our party - clearly the waiting staff had decided that one of my friends wasn't to have a desert.Overall impression - ok dining experience but with so many choices of restaurant in London, I wouldn't revisit.

I like discoveries and so when I saw a fibreglass column wrapped structure next to the Regents Canal with the neon sign Filling Station above, I had to look. As an architect, this is a brilliant temporary reuse of a discarded building now bought alive and unpretentious in this solitary corner. At night, it glows!. Inside in what was the gas station office is now a restaurant looking onto a covered terrace and then the canal. It is a brilliant reuse. I only had time for a coffee standing up and so this review is based on what I saw. The food comes fast from a kitchen behind the long bar and it looks fresh and uncomplicated, the staff are some of the friendliest I have met and the owner was very welcoming. Thank you. The customers of various ages and groups were having a brunch that I was jealous of. So, if you have a chance, grab some friends or your mate and go for the experience, its perfect.

My partner and I visited Shrimpys on a Monday night for our anniversary. A short walk from Kings Cross and St Pancras along the new path that heads north from the stations. Not the easiest place to find with just a small sign pointing round the back of an interesting building that looks like public toilets. Having found the little eatery around the back of the building we sat at our table tightly packed next to our neighbours on both sides. Was maybe a little too squeezed in but I don't begrudge a restaurant trying to get as many covers in when the food should be tried by all. We both started with cocktails which were great and shared a wonderful quesadilla pre starter. Cod Croquettes for starter, these were fantastic and full of Cod And not potato. Lobster and the soft shell burger for main with a sides of the best fries and coleslaw I have had for a long time. Go visit this place it's great food, friendly staff and the best southern American food this side of the water.

After hearing mixed reviews we thought we would still give it a try as big fans of bistroteque (the brains behind shrimpy's). Based in an old filling station behind kings cross its off the beaten track but not too far if the experience was good. We went on a Saturday for lunch, party of 3. Not many tables in and eerily quiet for a relitively small room which made us conscience of our conversation. Waiting staff were dressed in strange white lab coats which looked cheap and were poorly ironed.Weren't offered drinks but tap water was offered and glasses were kept full until we left. Now for the food we offered a plate of octopus and calamari with tapenade and fennel to start to share between the three of us this was delicious and raised our hopes for the mains although the mains did not deliver. After a non recommendation from our vegan waitress I had the soft shell crab burger along with my friend and miss T had the pork pozole (like a stew)The flavours were fairly bland and all merged into one after a couple of bites a lack of seasoning across all the dishes. All in all this is one that is not worth the trek, there are lots of better places for your buck.

The food was average, nothing special, the prices are high but this is London. The place is located in an up-coming neighborhood but it would take long time for this area to become something. The best part of this area is that is next to the river but it's another place that has the rights for the out door area. The food is nothing special. I had Chicharron and a Guacamole as a started; I wish I knew better, we tried the Caponata, Sicilian aubergine stew. Been in Sicily, what a mess. The Monk fish was good, thank goodness. Asked for a second glass of wine it never came, even though I had the impression that the service was good, I have to admit I got it wrong! Good luck to this place. The chef is good but he got to get a hold of his/her staff.

Friendly staff. Some food good but some not so great. Thai green curry was lovely. Calamari was tough and so was the beef - so chewy! No atmosphere or music. Cocktail lacked taste and not even sure they put any alcohol in it. Food came out very quick. Egg friend rice was nice.

Just tried the fried shrimps, they were lovely! Would like to try some of the other menu items next time we are at Spitalfields. They came with a dip and some really tasty samphire. Would defo recommend!
