Really enjoyed the food and service during our recent stay in the area. We will definitely be back. The food was delicious and the staff very welcoming and friendly.

Great food as always. Chef Luke cooked some amazing food again. Both ordered burgers (lamb and chicken) on a Saturday lunch time. The food was tasty and really great. Frank and Ella were very attentive. Not sure the people who have given negative reviews really justify their ratings.we will be back for sure!

We dropped in for lunch at this delightful pub on our journey through the Peak District. The food is very tasty and beautifully presented. The staff are friendliness personified and very attentive. And the pub itself is lovely. I can't recommend the Shoulder of Mutton highly enough.

Excellent food and quick service. Me and my wife have called twice so far during our stay in the area, all our meals have been very enjoyable, delivered quickly, by pleasant staff. It's dog friendly, with lots of comfortable seating, we will be calling again I am sure before we leave.

Visited on a quiet Monday lunchtime, very friendly barstaff, very clean and welcoming pub, ordered Rump Steak and Fish and chips, both excellent made perfectly with homemade chips and very reasonably priced, definitely coming back.

A lovely pub. The first pub I've been to in a very long time. Very clean, beautiful interior, lovely staff and great food. Quite high prices but it was worth it for the overall experience. Is dog and child friendly too which is great!

Had an evening meal here which was OK but no gluten free options at all. I ended up with burger without the bun and chips.not many veggie options either for my daughter. A very nice staff member who was new but that was the best we could say. We also used the venue in the daytime for a funeral wake. It wasn't good. Buffet is a good price but the milk was off and when checked 4 days out of date (this was on a hot drinks station which was underwhelming) all white bread no idea how to cater for gluten free and the offering turned up after the other food was demolished. We had asked for specific cakes it was the wrong sort and l large tart ,16 portions, for over 30 people 🤷‍♀️we resorted to popping over the road to the very helpful Weltons to buy more cake and none available at the pub for the gluten free diners. What a shame

I am a regular at the shoulder and do drink in here but not often eat. My family came on Sunday for the Sunday lunch. I had often heard people leaving the premises saying how beautiful the food was, and I know that the food is always highly spoken about. So last Sunday we managed to get a table for fathers day. "Luckily they managed to squeeze us in". All I can say is if your mum cooked a proper Sunday dinner then this is the place to go. The food was superb and traditional, not faffed about. What I will say is I see people come and go, fed and watered and leave happy. I was one of those customers and will definitely be partaking again when my wife says she can't be bothered to cook. Absolutely superb proper food.

Went for the England game with a few mates, where they were doing an offer for a burger and a pint for £12 Messaged their social page first to check if there were vegetarian burgers as well, to which they said that vegetarian burgers would be available which was good Disappointingly when we arrived they said that they didn’t have any vegetarian burgers (even after messaging before to confirm). I asked if they did any chips and they said they were only doing burgers. They even offered to do me a cheese roll instead of a burger 😂 not paying £12 for a cheese roll and a pint My friends burgers came out and didn’t look like I was missing out on much anyway so not all losses A shame really as heard good things about the pub, not coming back in a rush

Good pub food and reasonably priced. There was a fat drunk bird shouting which slightly spoiled the experience. Pub staff should remove these problems, that's my only grumble.

Steaks cooked to absolute perfection and the plate is filled with a variation of everything instead of just chips (although the chips are lovely too!)

Very mixed feeling about this place. Mia was very kind to take our pre-order, and the food was organised as it should. The chicken pies took a bit longer to come out compared to the others' dishes, but that was ok. Portions were very descent and food quite tasty. It is very convenient to have a child playground for the little ones. And they kindly offered sweets to all the children at the end of the meal which was a very nice touch. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. There are lots of alcohol free drink choices, which i appreciated greatly! Now , we got a little bit unlucky with our timing as a wake was taking place when we went. But the issue was more that in both male and female toilets, the guests of the wake were taking drugs... which is not ideal when you have little ones with you. "Luckily," we could take them to the disabled toilet instead.

Faultless throughout. The staff are sensational. Very friendly and eager to help. Efficient service. The food was top notch (we had a party in the far dining room, with a cold buffet, which was delicious). The drinks are reasonably priced. Good selection of beers, wine and gin. Garden is spacious and good for children (pebbles and grass). Very grateful to John, Harry, Luke and the team for their efforts. Very lucky to have such a great pub in the village.

I popped in here twice this week as I was staying in the area, the food was delicious, the beer was good and the staff very friendly. It ticks all the boxes. The halloumi fingers were the best I’ve ever had

Nice pub with great food, big bar so plenty of spaces to sit, marked down on the atmosphere due to the same song being repeated about 5 times while we were waiting on our witby scampi and the large group of youths hanging around one car on the car park

I must say I'm out of town and looked around for best places for food and decided to go here and ommmgg the burger was unreal even I got stuck for choice as the fish smelt just as good the owner was very Down to earth with the best selection of music ever very chilled and very nice decor even wants to keep it a restaurant type bar to filter out the sports bar needing for the town

As we heard the pub had launched a new menu, we decided to go down midweek to try out some e dishes. Great new menu with lots of traditional pub grub and a few fancy dishes. I opted for the Chicken Kiev and my partner the lambs liver and they were both delicious. Chef Luke really does cook some amazing food. One thing for sure is to save room for the Chocolate Fondant - it was out of this world!!

I arrived here around 3pm and the place was pretty much empty, not a goid sign. The food was over priced £15.95 for an halloumi and mushroom burger. My partners pudding and chips were even more expensive. The pudding was hard definitely not steamed. Jalapeño bite to start was £5.95 and you got 3. They were full of water inside and greasy. I am more than happy to pay for good food but this was not. The food was not fresh and definitely frozen. My partner and friend have been ill last since eating the food.

What a lovely pub! We had never been before and went for an evening meal. There were 4 of us and we were spoilt for choice on the menu. 2 starters (garlic mushrooms) disappeared very quickly with clean plates at the end. Main courses of lambs liver, chicken kiev, steak and gammon were all absolutely delicious, plentiful and demolished - again all clean plates at the end. Desserts of chocolate fondant, vanilla trio and cheeseboard were all fantastic. The chap who served us (apologies we didn't ask your name but it was a Thursday evening) was absolutely lovely, chatty and couldn't do enough to make sure we were enjoying our food. We found out that the head chef was actually pot washing whilst overseeing the junior chefs who did the cooking. Well done junior chef(s), the food was fantastic, and well done head chef for teaching them well (and pot washing!). The pub had a long and large dining area, so plenty of space - we had booked, but were advised for popular nights like sunday lunch, music and quiz nights to definitely book. We will definitely be returning - thank you Shoulder of Mutton, for a lovely night

£15 each for a burger & chips & £8 for child’s meal…. Came to £50 for 2 adults & 1 child which only soft drinks. Burger wasn’t nothing special & was cooked medium rare (pink in middle & red juice soaked in the bun) no option given in how you would like it done. Coleslaw was old & warm. Best meal was the kids Mac n cheese but was still average at best. real shame, I would have rather gone to a proper restaurant for the price.

We visited with friends. We live some distance from each other so meet up mid way ... It was a Wednesday evening and Steak Night. What great value for money,2 steak meals for £35..Decent portions with chips, tomatoes, peas..Also a free drink came with that..We had 3 courses and each was delicious and freshly prepared . Would definately eat here again when in the area..

Visited today as a family for Mother's Day. Staff are very friendly and we felt welcomed when we arrived. Starters were good and puddings scrummy but the Sunday roast was delicious! We were stuffed and very happy when we left! Would highly recommend and we will definitely be back soon. Thanks!

Went here on the spur of the moment with family, 7 adults and 2 children. Well we were all so impressed, it was the best roast we had all ever had, we opted for 2 family of four sharing boards @ a cost of £60 each. We did have a little wait but staff were attentive and friendly, when the food arrived we were taken aback by the platters, there was sirloin of beef cooked to perfection, sliced thinly slightly pink in the middle, but melted in the mouth like butter, thick slices of moist pork, chicken breasts that were well flavoured not your usual thin slice's that you might be served else where! Great big home made yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, glazed, whole carrots and parsnips that were delicious cooked to perfection, baby stem broccoli all accompanied by pigs in blankets. We all tucked in and were left more than satisfied with our choice. There was enough to all take home take away boxes, which staff were happy to do and presented well, for the next day. The ambience of the pub was lovely as there was live piano music, which made our visit extra special. Could not fault this place, will definitely return soon. Special thank you to all the staff, fab job.

We were impressed with the menu choices. I had an adult portion of the gammon, chips & peas. The egg and pineapple really added to this. It was delicious and so filling I had no room for dessert. My friend went for the small plate beef lasagne which she thoroughly enjoyed. She had room for her second choice dessert. Half of cider apiece was a great choice. The layout of the place was spacious and the decor was lovely. The background music was a trip down memory for us. My mother used to say you can judge an eaterie by the state of the toilets. These were clean, fresh and with extras like lotion, hairspray and feminine hygiene products. We will certainly go again and will recommend this place to others.

Had lunch here on a rainy day Great service from the staff. Told us what they didn’t have available on the menu We ordered pie of the day, sausage and mash and a panini. All the food was delicious I had the chicken and tarragon pie with mash and veg. Was really yummy. Will def visit again. Have been before on the evening and the decor and ambience of the pub are lovely. The bar area is really comfy and lovely Definitely recommend.

An evening with friends who all at one time lived in Great Bowden but hadn’t really visited since COVID. Quite simply the food was excellent and great value. In some respects too much, I took home a doggy bag. The tapas like dishes were excellent and plentiful. Home made pies and brilliant sausages ensured four satisfied customers. Little gripes included not being able to see what draught beers they were. The staff we interacted with were efficient and personable. Don’t think you can ask more from a village pub. We will return but maybe eat less. Use it or lose it!

Amazing food great staff, came here last sunday for dinner with family , I wasnt expecting much having been to afew local restaurants , i can honestly say this place knocks the socks off the rest, absolutely cooked to perfection, I will not be going anywhere else in the future 😀

Absolutely outstanding!!! chef in town!!! We went this afternoon for Sunday dinner all I can say is outstanding 👌 Plenty off delious food, piping hot, fast service. I've not been to the pub in years and was truly blown away by the turn around. We will definitely be returning. If you haven't been yet you need to go.

Went for the Sunday dinner and it was the nicest roast any of us has had in a long time! Unfortunately a table nearby was making a fuss about the vegan menu and being very rude and insolent to the member of staff on duty. Despite this, the member of staff remained professional, and service was not interrupted. We had our meals promptly. No issues or complaints from us! Would recommend and will be back in future.

Disappointed. Came here because of the reviews and menu, but was let down by the communication and service. First, the service was slow - the place was not busy and it still took 45 minutes for food to be served. Secondly, when it came we kept having to ask for parts of our meals that were forgotten (potatoes on two meals, cauliflower cheese for all). Finally, we realised that the menu stated that *all* Sunday lunches included Yorkshire puddings, but it turned out that that doesn't include the vegan option (which has the same price - photo of menu attached). When I pointed that this wasn't communicated by the staff and is misleading on the menu, the person I spoke to argued with me, stating that the menu is not misleading because it says the vegan roast is vegan, and therefore can't include Yorkshire puddings. At no point was it acknowledged that the menu clearly states "All", and refused to accept that we would interpret this to mean a vegan alternative would be provided. In summary... slow, scattered service, misleading menu, and a member of the service staff who was belligerent and sassy when prompted to accept that we were misled. Despite all this, most of the food we ate was nice, so our experience is not as low as 1 star.

Big group of us went Christmas day and paid £65 per person. We had to wait 2 hours for mains to come out and it was shockingly bad. It was that bad I'm surprised that the staff would be prepared to serve it. Shame we will never be going back.

Arrived early at first and wasn’t home but very understanding and came back at the requested time! However not impressed with the size of the burrito considering the price and didn’t arrive with salad as said 🤷‍♀️

Popped in mid-week early evening for dinner. Service with a smile, bar staff were helpful and friendly, plenty of choice for seating, very tidy too. Ordered food at the bar, I went for the house burger served with salad and Potato wedges which was delicious, proper meat, one of the nicest burgers I’ve had in a while not your Mcdonalds fake burgers! Food arrived in good time; again, with a smile. My partner decided on the chicken kebab which she thoroughly enjoyed. All round great service…Atmosphere was a bit lacking but it was mid-week early evening… If we’re in the area again we’ll definitely be making some meal stops here 10/10

We really enjoyed our stay here for our lunch, my son even said the food came out steaming at the perfect temperature 😄. There are dog treats for dogs, The area is clean. Little touches of thoughts like the serviettes stick together that must be an extra effort to make it look nice & emergency toiletries for girls which I appreciate as a customer 🙂. The staff were young ladies with good attitude & manners 👍 Spent £52 for 3meal,pint for my partner,small rose wine for me &hot chocolate for my son which he said is perfect 😄 Spacious and warm

We had arranged with John prior to our wedding for us to use the Shoulderfor our Groom’s party to have pre wedding drinks and a fantastic breakfast! Very reasonably priced, food of a great standard and any nerves were calmed with a great selection of beers!! Would recommend this to anyone getting married at St Peter and St Paul’s Church or anywhere in the local area. We captured some great photos both in the pub and gardens and around The Green outside. What a local should be all about - thank you John and The Shoulder team who went above and beyond!!

Amazing food tonight at the Shoulder. We had the special Surf & Turf burger and the Chicken Burger. Both were amazing! Desserts were also incredible. Friendly and welcoming service as always from John & George. Comfortable, lovely village pub. Highly recommend! Especially on a Thursday for prosecco night, amazing wine choices and a very good pint of Guiness.

My husband said the Gammon was the best he'd ever had! I had lamb kebab on flatbread with mayo and chilli sauce. Great.

We loved it here, its dog friendly, nothing was too much trouble, the chef made curry sauce off menu, the chef was lovely and so was the food, the chicken naan, nachos, fish and chips so good our son had it both days, we loved it so much we came back the next day for lunch, we will be back next time we are on holiday 😋 we didn't take any photos, too busy eating

The staff are absolutely amazing, nothing is any trouble at all, so friendly and welcoming. I've not tried that much on the menu "yet" but what I have tried I really can't fault in any way. The atmosphere is the same as the staff friendly and welcoming

Chef Luke is indeed a magician. I had the carbonara and my wife had the sea bass. To say my pasta was delicious is an understatement and the risotto with the fish was sublime. We will be back for more!

Had a family meal here today, the food was really good and not overly priced. The staff are really nice and accommodated all our needs and requests. We will definitely come again and recommend it.

Stopped by chance on the way home from Scotland, very clean and tidy, games for the kids, treats for the dog. Food was excellent and the service top notch. Highly recommend.

We went to this place around 4pm on a Saturday, it was quiet the atmosphere was off putting to say the least. We ordered white bait starter which was nice. The mains however we ordered the classic beef burger, for the price of £15 each we would’ve expected a decent beef patty but were served something basic with no taste or sauce on the burger, some of the lettuce was also wilted. The bread was crumbling and weren’t even toasted. They also did not have any other dairy free milk options which was strange as they had gluten free deserts. Apart from that the place was clean.

Absolutely fantastic place, lovely food, adventurous menu for kids, friendly staff and customers. Kids, me, Mrs and grandparents all loved it,100% coming back again. Highly recommended

Just called in for a couple of beers post ride, bit pricey but isn't everywhere now. At least it was open, only pub I could find in Chapel open on Friday afternoon! Sad town.

Pub is really lovely, clean and welcoming. The food was good however I would have chosen something else had I known it was going to be served with fries. I'm not a lover of fries and I don't think they belong with pie and gravy, so please if you're going to state chunky chips on the menu then at least tell people you haven't got any so they can make another choice.
