Very disappointing, low quality ingredients and plated up with no imagination. Prices are average for what was on offer, but overpriced for what was presented.

We arrived 20 minutes before the kitchen opened so had good choice of tables and were greeted by a charming young barman. Picked a table, ordered a couple of pints and sat and perused menu until he came and took our orders. Food turned up promptly and was delicious. About 12.15 glanced around the room to see the place was packed. Glad we came early. Portions were generous and prices reasonable. All staff we encountered were delightful.

We met friends here who we hadn't seen in 5 years. It was a Sunday lunchtime but no Sunday roast offered, not complaining as it had a great menu. What we had was good, the Cullen Skink was full of fish and very little potato but the soup was on the thin side. The mussels as a main course were wonderful and a large portion. Recommend but you must book and the table is only for 2 hours.

Luckily got a table outside on a very warm sunny day - which was also a local holiday! Please was very busy, but the staff coped with good service and good humour. The menu had a good selection of both seafood and others. Watching meals coming out, we noted the Chicken Fillets and the Muscles seemed to be very popular. We had the Smoked Mackerel salad and the Cajun Fishcakes. Both tasted very good - and the table beside us changed their intentions and had the Mackerel too. Prices seemed fair considering portion size, quality and superb location.

I return to the Ship Inn Stonehaven every chance I get, not only because it's a lovely inn in a wonderful coastal town near numerous sites worthy of a visit, but because the restaurant serves the most delicious Cullen Skink anywhere. I've sampled it in many places and none have compared to that of the Ship Inn. Thanks to the chef for making it a unique and delectable experience.

Although the staff were freindly enough, we were disappointed with the size of the cold seafood platter which seemed to have shrunk considerably since the last time we ate here. It wasn't cheap, and to be given two very small morsel sized pieces of bread between the four of us was quite ridiculous! For a platter (£27.50) with a few small pieces of seafood was a shocker. In total the meal came to £117 for one (tiny) platter, four mains and a round of drinks, we certainly won't be going back. I came away feeling as if we'd been ripped off. Never again!

Was really disappointed after reading all the great reviews. I ordered the steak which although was cooked as I asked was not presented well. For £24.50 it arrived on the plate with 3 onion rings a small handful of mushrooms, half a tomato and a small portion of fries. Poor value and not well presented. My daughters crispy fish burger was a piece of haddock (what is usually served as the fish & chips) sticking out of a floury bun accompanied by yet another small portion of anaemic fries. The only thing that saved it was the lovely coleslaw she said. Staff on the other hand were excellent tho

I visited this restaurant with my husband and 13 year old son for lunch whilst visiting the nearby Dunnottar Castle. We had booked a table before travelling (a good job too as the restaurant was booked up!). The staff were friendly the food was excellent. The only slight mishap we had is that my son ordered the gammon and, whilst it was excellent, it wasn't what he was used to (real, fresh gammon as opposed to those pressed processed circles). I gave him some of the home-made chicken fillets I had ordered (which were amazing!) and he really liked those so I asked the waitress if I could order some of those for him instead. I made a point of saying there was nothing wrong with the food, just that it wasn't what he was used to and she ordered some chicken for him instead. She couldn't have been more helpful and we really enjoyed the rest of our meals. This really is a fabulous restaurant with top-quality food set on the harbourside. I would highly recommend it for any age group or occasion and would certainly visit again if I was in the area.

We were 6 for lunch on Saturday 4th January, 2020. I had asked for a window table when I booked, and that is what we got. We were rather disappointed that the only fish/seafood items on the menu, (other than battered/breaded haddock), were unavailable. Because of dietary requirements I then had a problem choosing something else. I'm guessing no fish/seafood may have been due to no boats being out over New Year? We will bear this in mind now, and won't visit again at that time of year, as most of us want to eat fish/seafood when at the Ship Inn.What we all ate was good, service was ok, (not as good as usual), but it was quite busy. Having read the reviews and the blurb on the website we decided to try the restaurant as it had stated seafood was on the menu. My husband had a starter of mussels which were nicely cooked though quite ordinary. We then had veal and seafood frito misto. The veal was very ordinary. The frito misto was supposed to be seafood in a very light tempura batter. It turned out to be pieces of seafood in batter as you would expect in a fish and chip shop, along with courgettes in batter too. This made the meal very heavy and you lost the taste of the delicate seafood that the batter hid.

Why put coriander cress on top off beef olives??? I had the seafood soup! The little bit off monkfish salon and mussels I got were cooked perfect but the squid and prawns were chewy. OK. We arrived at the almost empty restaurant to be told they were fully booked so could sit in the bar? Which we did, while the restaurant remained empty for the duration of our meal. First was the starter. My partner had Cauliflower Pakora, and I had the Cullen Skink, which was quite frankly shockingly bad considering what is on offer next door. The Pakora was not Pakora at all. Battered raw cauliflower at best and completely inedible. The Cullen Skink had pools of oil floating on it, was watery, could find little evidence of potato in it and the fish was bland, overcooked and tasteless. Just awful. We couldn't finish either dish despite our efforts, and on returning both dishes were offered no refund. We hoped the Macaroni Cheese would fare better but alas we were disappointed again. The pasta was substandard and undercooked, what little sauce there was had been absorbed by the undercooked pasta screaming for moisture, and as if to mock my already sad mouth, a thin dusting of cheese burnt onto the top of each dish almost made me laugh at the disatrousness of it all. The chips were overcooked and very low quality. The garlic bread and onion rings were also awful. Soft onions dripping with old oil leaving a dirty aftertaste, with the garlic bread having a hint of plastic? (pretty certain it had been microwaved). Couldn't wait to get out of there to be honest and we are both still feeling rather unwell. A very unpleasant dining experience and would suggest walking straight past to get some proper grub next door. How they can call this cooking is quite amazing. I wouldn't feed this rubbish to the gulls!

Local and had opportunity to bring family together. Table ready on arrival and we were seated immediately and waitress went to bar area and chatted to another staff member. After about 5 minutes with no activity I had to go and ask her if we could order a round of drinks at the table. The order was duly taken and brought over - we found we were a drink short, one of the party had not been asked what they wanted. My beer (Stella) was rather flat and short on measure - to her credit the waitress noticed and offered to top it up but it was still not “lively” as it usually is. We dined early and found “specials” were being taken off by 1830. Overall the meal was okay but considered starters and deserts in particular to be over priced. There were no other “locals” and place is generally geared to tourist market. With the pound the way it is may seem good value to foreign visitors. My son who dines regularly in the UK and overseas on business said “Let’s go somewhere else next time” which was a disappointment for me on what was a special occasion.

Really enjoyed our lunch at the ship Inn. We had the choice of eating in the bar or the restaurant and chose the latter which was light and airy and has a view to the harbour.

A méditer.

Typisk britisk pub, med godt øl og veldig god fish and ships.

We met another couple here for Sunday lunch and a long overdue catch up, our friends had booked the table which was just as well as they were busy. Service was a bit erratic but the food was good as were the portion sizes, it got a little warm so a few windows were opened but we had to ask for them to be closed again as it was too much for January. Would go again and think they are reasonably priced.

Given other reviews we had read prior to deciding to eat at The Captain's Table, we were disappointed to receive pretty standard 'pub grub'.

Pernottando al The Ship Inn e considerando le recensioni ci è sembrata una scelta "obbligata". Ne siamo usciti soddisfatti.

I’m a local and friends and family eat around Stonehaven so kinda have a feel for the current scene, in all honesty the service needs a kick up the backside, one of our party was forgotten about (main course) the fish sliders on brioche buns were not in brioche buns, trying to order a Glenmorangie proved a difficult task....food was okay but not of the standard expected, come on Ship Inn, ship up or it’ll be ship out for us!

Visited there on a wet dull Saturday lunch time and had a table in the bar side. Even though it was very busy in restaurant and the bar, the food was surprisingly quick. I had the soup/sandwich combo of Culllen Skink/Tuna Mayo sandwich and it was excellent and reasonably priced. Not a huge menu for light lunches but the portions are just right

We had dinner here during our last visit a couple of years ago so decided to go back for lunch. Service was very prompt and food was very good and just right for our appetite. Would definitely recommend the Ship Inn.

We enjoyed o lovely lunch here of mussels & Cullen skink (which was superb), followed by a tempura dish of fresh fish (unfortunately without the vegetables).

Had a meal here last night. When we arrived the restaurant was full but we were lucky enough to get a table in the bar. Friendly and informationative service from the 2 staff members that greeted us. Lots of choice on the menu, with local produce very visible. Our 2 children enjoyed their breaded fish and chicken burger, my husband and I had the salmon fish cakes and the sea bass with risotto. Everything was well presented and delicious. My son was especially excited by the presentation of his ‘Pingu ice cream’ as penguins are his favourite animal. Will definitely be returning again when we are in the area.

We arrived late in a Friday night and walked to this place. Great food and quick service. We enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks as well. Right next to the pier.

Had a super lunch here of fresh mussels, frites, and crusty bread. Absolutely delicious. Great service, great view if you are lucky enough to get a window seat. A little pricey but worth it for a treat.

My son and I enjoyed a superb meal at The Ship Inn. The Cullen Skink was amazing as were the mussels that he had as a starter. He then had a huge mixed grill while I enjoyed wonderful fish and chips. The service was excellent and could not be faulted. A wonderful setting by the harbour in Stonehaven. I can very much recommend The Ship Inn and will definitely return.

A group of us dropped in for some lunch and all ordered haddock and chips. The fish were all overcooked and the chips were soggy. Come on guys, get your act together for this basic dish and provide crisp, dry chips as well. The staff were good and attentive but the place and especially the toilets, need a facelift.

We prefer the Inverurie one to Elgin or the Inverness ones. Fast service, quieter, consistently lovely food & friendly staff.

We had quite a disappointing experience, we booked the room on the Thainstone house website, we paid extra for a larger bed "super king deluxe" and some extras like a fruit platter, when we arrived they gave us the wrong sized bed, was a standard double when we paid for a super king deluxe, there was also no fruit platter. We were confirmed on the booking for the restaurant, but the restaurant was closed. Instead, they served us in the bar on weird low lounge chairs. It felt a bit silly making us eat in an area that's designed as a lounge, low slouch chairs, etc. They gave 3 different reasons as to why we couldn't eat at a table, considering they have 3 other rooms designed for dining it seemed a bit of a bad decision, other guests came in and looked pretty cheesed off at the arrangements. The gym and pool were really run down. It's not the sort of place you expect when you pay well over £300 for the entire experience. For that price and the house reputation we expected something really nice, I had to pretend to be happy as I didn't want to stress my girlfriend out, we had driven down from the Highlands for her to have a medical procedure at Aberdeen hospital, I thought it would break the journey up and make my girlfriend less nervous to spend the night in a posh hotel, I was mistaken. The one thing that saved this was that the food was amazing, but be warned, a pint of standard beer is £12. I left feeling like I had been really ripped off, wouldn't mind paying more if the place met the expectations.

The rooms are grubby, sheets dirty, decor is dated, don’t look too close as carpets, skirting’s and paintwork hasn’t been cleaned properly, hotel is a shambles, and don’t get me started on the sister hotel across the road…. It needs condemned

It is horrible to walk into as everyone smoking outside. Also, when the back door opens the smell of stale, smoke goes through the restaurant . Tables are a mess with leftover plates and never seem to have many staff cleaning. Like an old man's bar with smell and drinkers.
