Delicious food at reasonable prices!

The place is not very big, but cosy. We got a 50% discount offer, so the overall price was great for the quantity we got. The udon was nice, as well as the sushi.

On 21st January 2022, we visited here fir our lunch after refurbished restaurant. The refurbished inside was very nice. Today, we ordered the different kinds of Nigiri sushi as Japanese order style. All were very good. All staffs were also very kind and good as usual. Looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you! On 24th December of Christmas Eve, my wife and I visited this restaurant for our lunch. We ordered fish sushi platter and beef curry udon noodle. All meals were very good as usual. This shop’s curry soup was very good! Looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you! Very good taste, I remembered Japanese taste dishes. Staff is very kind. Looking forward to coming back soon.

I have stopped cooking since I moved to Edinburgh three months ago, because there are so many amazing restaurants here. Shen sushi is one of my discovery. The place is cosy and organic with dark green paint and wood planks on wall. Staffs are attentive, cheerful and efficient. The presentation is immaculate and appetising, everything is prepared on spot. The rice in the sushi is at room temperature, as it should be, the proportion of the fish and the rice is just right. All the ingredients burst with freshness and you can tell that the chef is very skilful. Today, I had a chat with one of the chef called Sarah- who has worked at renowned sushi place called “Atelier” in Soho for 7 years. I was lucky enough to taste one of her “saba”(mackerel) dish which was lightly torched and served with slices of radish. The fish was translucent and tangy. I am salivating as I am writing and I can’t wait to go back!

What I love about Shinshen Sushi is the value for money the place provides. And they really do a good Sushi. Thick fresh sushis that are flavoursome and filling. The interiors are nicely done and we had a nice relaxing lunch and ate a lot, and was happy and sated.

Very yummy sushi here, had dragon roll and tempura , tempura wasn’t crispy which was sad but still it was yummy , been there twice now

Interesting take on Japanese cuisine. Pictured is the Beef Udon (I could eat that beef every day, absolutely delicious) and Chicken Teriyaki.

It's fine, but there are better options nearby (Mirin). Food is ok, music is terrible and the service is really slow (but pleasant). I get the impression they're slammed with Deliveroo orders and this increases the wait times massively.

First time eating here today. The food was excellent (fresh, big portions) and the service was very friendly. I've tried a few Sushi/Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh and this is now my current favourite.

Nice cozy place perfect for some delicious sushi or classic Japanese food! The staff is very friendly and attentive, the food takes its time to arrive (as it should be) but it's worth the wait! Full of taste, nice presentation topped up with some great prices! One spot to visit if you're around the area!

Small cozy Japanese restaurant with friendly staff and delicious food made with high quality ingredients. Had the duck confit ramen which was excellent and a collection of maki rolls.

The establishment is quite small, however the food (not just sushi but ramen too) is excellent as well as the service.

Hidden gem - amazing food and presentation was lovely. Our server, Josh was attentive, friendly and gave us lots of recommendations. He was knowledgeable on all dishes we had questions about and made us feel so welcome. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for great Japanese cuisine and cosy atmosphere. Can't wait to come back to try some new dishes! :)

One staff impressed me the most with his knowledge towards the food and that was josh, not just his outstanding knowledge his kindness and also had a good conversation with him, gave me an insight of what the restaurant is about,. The service was good, but the food was so low quality. Hard thick pork in the ramen, poor quality noodle and tasteless broth. The sushi had quite small amount of fish.

We visited on the first of two stops in Edinburgh on recent trip and were pleased enough to come back on the second stop. The sushi was tasty, beautifully presented and good value. The host was extremely welcoming and helpful. A small spot but on-line reservations are easy. Also very convenient to our hotel as well as others that would be near Waverly Station and just one block off the tram line. Recommend!

This sushi place is amazing. Great, fresh sushi for a better price than chains. They also have sushi you might not try otherwise. Presentation is beautiful and the restaurant is clean. The owners remember customers well and are super friendly. We have yet to try their hot food (but it looks and smells delicious). They do vegan sushi as well, we tried it as part of a too good to go bag and weren’t fans but actual vegans might love it. Would 100% recommend this place and we will be back again and again.

Wow The tonkotsu ramen is so tasty! The pork was tender and the broth was flavourful, the eggs were cooked to perfection and presentation was beautiful. My partner had the chicken katsu which I had a taste of, this was also delicious. Such tasty sauce! The sushi tasted as good as it looks - beautiful presentation, fresh sushi and soft avocado. (I've found it's a "hit and miss" in Edinburgh when it comes to sushi, you won't be disappointed here.) To top it off, the service was lovely and the restaurant had some good tunes playing. Will definitely be returning! Highly recommend.

Hidden gem . They have renovated the place to an absolute beauty. Josh (the waiter/cashier) is so knowledgeable and kind. The chef was also so kind.We traveled 4 hours and wanted sushi,but we also had a Great Dane in the car, and they let him in!! Delicious food,Hreat prices! Amazing service.

I ordered shrimp tempura curry with rice, it was really good. My friend ordered spicy seafood ramen and it was good too. The staff was really nice, definitely will come back.

A very cozy restaurant. The waiter was one of the most friendly and approachable person I have ever met. But the most important fact is that the food is delish! I loved the sushi. Oh my god, I will only eat sushi from now on. I don't want anything else. Just sushi. This restaurant made me this way.

We live just a few metres down the road from Shinsen and are regular fans of the Katsu curry (particularly the ajitama style egg included in the dish). Not to mention, all sashimi and types of sushi cooked or raw are always a delight, with presentation looking absolutely beautiful when dining in the resturant. Great customer service and great food, would highly recommend.

I needed a hot soup fix in a cold day and the ramen did just that! Mushroom ramen was tasty. A nice miso-based soup with plenty of mushrooms added.

Fantastic ramen, atmosphere, and service! This wee place is tucked in the back of the Leith Walk. I loved their seafood ramen (£14) and cooked salmon sushi (£10 for 8pc). Prices seem affordable and portions are decent. The waiter Josh was super friendly. The seafood ramen seemed more salty rather than spicy though. I will definitely be back to try their duck ramen and other types of cooked uramaki sushi!

Great food, very small restaurant tho.

An unassuming tiny restaurant on Broughton Street we discovered randomly. The front of house chap was very polite and we swifty order drinks (a nice glass of Riesling and a local Pilot beer). I had the confit duck ramen (£14) which had a delicate smoky broth with a slight sweetness to it. The meat had been cooked sous vide and was melt in the mouth tender. The sky marinated egg was delicious and perfectly cooked along with the noodles. The nori seaweed brought a real umami hit in what was a delicious dish. My partner has chicken teriyaki which consisted of tender chicken bites, sticky sushi rice and crunchy mange tout. We shared a delicious small portion of tempura prawns that had a light crunchy batter that housed the sweet shellfish. Would recommend

The local es very beautiful and comfortable. The service es very nice and the waiters is a really good and very kind. The food is very tasty and we loved that food. We ate mushroom ramen and curry ramen. Bouth things it was really good. I recommend to eat there. I hope you can enjoy like we could enjoyed.

Guys.. please do get it together. You have a cool vibe of a Spot and great location but: running out of tuna, lousy quality /chewy salmon in the limited rolls you had available, serving the incorrect wine ( it was a 50/50 guess I get it) and still charging the higher prices? I hope you do well but it wasn’t a good experience.

(Retracted 5 star review) place has gone down hill, hard and weird smelling sushi. By weird it’s clearly not fresh, as fresh sushi should not smell as if it’s going off. Salmon also shouldn’t have big grey side streaks of low quality cuts. Sushi is a premium price and should always be fresh. Could tell the order we had was not fresh as it was also lukewarm which is concerning. Entire order was refunded through Uber eats.

Great wee restaurant. Very small and cosy, but the right kind of vibe. Tried an array of different sushi rolls, alongside the miso soup. All the food was absolutely delicious. It was fresh and tasty. The prices were also very reasonable. The waiter was very nice and allowed us to move tables to be closer to the heater. Would highly recommend!!

Really lovely sushi, lovely staff. I've had take aways, collected orders and eaten in here. The staff are always happy to accommodate and advise. I'm not Japanese but love Japanese food - it's some of the best I've had - the sushi rice is seasoned just the right amount and the fish is always cut and prepared very well.

This restaurant offers both ready to go and dine in. We had two ramen which were quite yummy. Their toilet is huge unlike some are super tiny which made me feel so intense. Overall, five stars.

They're fantastic value, and I love their loyalty program that gets me a free lunch for every 10 I buy! On top of that, the staff always go out of their way to be friendly and helpful, they remember me and my order, and they're always lovely to my greyhound. Doesn't get better than a delicious, convenient Japanese restaurant that's DOG FRIENDLY! Thanks Shinsen!

They charged me £7 for this. I wanted a pure avo roll, which exist and I’ve ordered this LOADS of time all over the world literally, but they said it’d be too small, so I had to add cucumber, and I see why now, because the avocado piece is microscopic. I will never eat there again. They literally robbed my £7 like wth. It was low quality to boot. The rice just not good. No no no.

We came here as had an itison voucher for the teriyaki. I had chicken and my partner had salmon. Generous sized portions and we both really enjoyed it! My chopstick skills were embarrassing, they do offer cutlery (which I probably should have accepted 😂), staff were helpful and polite. Would definitely come again.

Not bad attempt at Japanese food

Fabulous pre-cinema dinner with some proper flavour in the broths although my choice, Salmon Teriyaki was the star overall. The Duck Leg and Beef Udon Ramens were also good and service was cracking, can't get more authentic Japanese than a West Country Gloucester accent ;) also have really good value lunch deals, we will be back!

Brilliant little restaurant. Very nice and professional. Food and service was great and the price are decent. I had the teriyaki chicken don burri, it was lovely and perfect portions. My partner had the the pork ramen and the next time she had the duck leg ramen that is "better than wagamamas" Ramen (her opinion). All in all great food and a great time, give it a go in your in town 😊

Booked to come here for my daughter’s birthday today. We received a really first class service. The restaurant only has a few tables but they were really accommodating making a table for 6 for us. The sushi was lovely! I also really enjoyed the Pumpkin Katsu. It was all plated really well too. They allowed my to bring my daughters own bday cake and plated it up with extra berries and chocolate powder etc to give it a special touch. They were also really patient with my nephew who is a very fussy eater. Nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely go back!

A small restaurant with cozy atmosphere. The employee was very professional and helpful in recommending menu items. The beef udon was incredible and the meat was so tender and soft so I’d highly recommend that, there’s also plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. They also do takeout sushi boxes style if that’s to your liking. The only downside was it’s geared towards the pricier side, especially for the portion given. Nevertheless it’s still a nice restaurant for a dine out.

Some of the best sushi I've had in Edinburgh. We sat in for a quick meal and it was so fresh and tasty. Staff were extremely friendly and really informative about the food! We will be back and can't reccomend it highly enough!

My son and I had lunch here yesterday. J and the team were very friendly and accommodating. The food was very good. Will definitely be back.

What an absolute disgrace of a place. Getting a table does not depend on whether there are any available but when the chef can be bothered to prepare your food. If you happen to then be sat facing the kitchen, you'll see why. Two chefs assembling, not cooking, dishes at a leisurely pace while the restaurant is full but no one is eating. When they eventually manage to complete a dish, it sits for 15-20 min waiting for the waiting staff to either be told it's ready or be bothered to bring it to the table. After over an hour waiting for our food and seeing this going on, we gave up and left. Is the food good? Never got a chance to try it but something that has been sitting for 20 min prior to coming to the table can't be at it's best. Especially when it's raw food. Do yourself a favour and don't waste time. There are plenty of other excellent Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh.

Right around the corner from our hotel, we stumbled I to this place starving at 3pm. Turns out, the sushi was phenomenal. Would highly recommend this place to anyone that likes both sushi as well as ramen and curry!

Don't order ramen on delivery. Totally not what I was expecting. Bland salty broth- watery, no depth. Bland meat. Really tiny bit of veg and corn. Egg not marinated in soy sauce, Im not even describing noodles- just no. That's it- from ramen I would expect variety of flavours, colours, excitement. That one was just flat one flavour from start to finish. No kombu, seaweed, sesame, green onion?

Had a dragon and California roll. Tasteless also wasn’t even rolled properly. Probably the worst sushi I ever had.

I had a great time here, I was running late for a movie and I needed somewhere to eat quickly before it started, the waitress who handled my order was very understanding and kind and managed to get the food to me in time so I got to my film. Do avoid the 5£ lunch deal, not worth it even at the price point, portion is much smaller than the ones shown in the photo and less appetizing too.

Sushi is very tasteless. We don't want to eat them at all. Are falling apart. Soy sauce is not enough, it is very salty

Agosto 2022 5 makis 4,5 2 niguiris 5 libras. Un pollo teriyaki, una ramen, una Asahi, una gaseosa 45 libras. Es muy rico, la mesera que nos atendió fue muy amable, el ambiente no es el mejor a nivel relación precio-calidad. La comida es muy rica. el baño no está limpio

Both vegetarian options that we ordered were not available (ramen and katsu) so we got teriyaki aubergine instead which was a bowl of raw and chewy veggies with sickly sweet sauce. We thought that maybe cook had a bad day as we saw her from our seats rolling eyes and saying something under her breath often.

I have a sesame allergy and they are always so pleasant and careful. The sushi is always delicious and I love the miso.

Clean place with friendly service staff. Arrived about 8pm and order two sushi rolls and two nigiri pieces. As noted by others the sushi rice needs improved. The place has alot of potential to be great but the sushi rice had been left in the rice cooker too long giving it a dry but sticky texture. Would like to see them fix this issue before trying again. Possibly by cooking smaller but more frequent batches. Would prefer to wait for fresh rice than pay for the rice we had.
