We ordered a takeaway from the menu online. We were charged £54 for the following Veg pakora Popadoms & spiced onions Chicken bhoona Rice Garlic nan We called to querie the price as it differed from the online menu price. We were told by the owner that there was two menus and the most expensive menu was the one we should have ordered from. I asked why there was two menus and he advised ‘he couldn’t do anything about this, that it was an old menu’ I asked why a meal for one was so expensive and they said it was because the produce was expensive. I feel £2 each for a popadom and £5.50 for a nan bread is overpriced The food was ok but definitely wasn’t worth the price. The pakora was a small portion and consisted of 6 small pakora pieces the nan bread was definitely not cooked in a tandoor oven. It looked and tasted shop bought. Extremely disappointing and I wont be ordering from here again. There are many restaurants/takeaways that I will be using that are way more value for money in the local area. We have contacted trading standards about the menu so other people are not mislead when ordering from here. Very poor 👎🏼

First time ordering a home delivery from Shimla Cottage, won't be the last. My meal arrived in record time and was piping hot on delivery. Food was absolutely delicious. Best lamb Rogan josh I've ever eaten! I had plain boiled rice with it and the rice was perfect. Both the gentleman who took my order and the delivery driver were friendly and helpful. 10 out of 10 guys. Thank you.

Had the lamb korma nice and tasty , but should have had something different. Couple of poppadoms free and spicey onions Really nice. Will have to come back again

We visited here 26th Dec 2023 with friends. Everything started off fine, Staff took the order and the food came. Food was actually nice. Then the bill came. Over charged by at least 10 percent. We asked for a menu to double check. Staff member (seemed to be the person in charge) clearly not happy with this, then told us that it was an 'old menu' but was not forthcoming with the 'new' menu. He the ln started ranting about 2 of our group sharing a main course (they did have a starter each) and one of our group having ordered 2 starters instead of a main course. The staff member then told us to pay what was listed in the menu, which we did. If this wasn't bad enough he then proceeded to try and insult us by taking the notes and leaving any of the pound coins on the table saying 'You need these more than me' I along with this group regularly eat out on restaurants and have done for a number of years. I have never came across this kind of behaviour from staff in any premises. A real.pitty because we did all agree that we would have returned in the future, obviously not now. Extremely ignorant man!

Visited on a Wednesday night and it wasn't busy - which we like. It also meant we got great personalised service from the owners (Father & Son). I had the parsee chicken (so fresh and just that hint of coriander !!) and my partner had the prawn chasni - both were very good indeed. Naan and paratha were excellent and the rice was the best I've had in a long time. As many folks say it is rather on the pricey side but the quality is great and the menu is interesting and not just your usual fare. It looks like they do an early evening set menu on certain days for £13 pp so we'll try that and keep the a la carte for a treat.

Went tonight, as a wee treat with the children having been meaning to go for a while. The place was quiet but we were greeted like old pals from the minute we entered. The children were made to feel comfortable as the team went out of their way to ensure that they adapted menu items for our wee boy (4) who has some allergies and our daughter (7) who can be fussy about food. My own meal was full of depth and flavour with clearly fresh ingredients throughout. Meals out might be at a minimum over the next while, given the situation everyone faces, but this will definitely be high on our list for places to visit when we can.

Our third take away from Shimla Cottages. In general we have found the food is expensive and small portions. Some dishes taste very fresh, the chicken passanda is very good. However at these prices and in a competitive market we’d expect quality across the board. Our last order was at 5pm last night, restaurant not long opened so you’d expect a wait but also freshly cooked food.Sadly we were disappointed. For £42 pounds the order was .....chicken pakora @ £5 (okay, not too dry but temp tepid), mushroom pakora @£4.50 (seriously only 50p less for mushrooms than chicken??) again okay, mushrooms were at least fresh, but again tepid. Made us wonder how long had pakora been sitting waiting for rest of order? Chicken Passanda @ £11. Third time ordered and as per usual was very good. Not particularly hot but okay for me. Still pricey though. Chicken Chasni @ £11 was 7 small pieces of chicken tikka bobbing about in a woefully thin chasni sauce, very synthetic and such a disappointment. Much better is available elsewhere. Boiled rice was good. Garlic Nann very poor. Tough dough, cold and dusted with dried herbs. This is so wrong. Sure the chefs can do much better as chicken passanda would illustrate. It’s a personal view, we didn’t discover anything sinister like chicken bones, so didn’t complain . But sadly we won’t be back.

We collected a very expensive Takeaway last night and were very dissapointed with the quality..The “prawns “ were more like shrimps and the Chicken Chaat was synthetic.I phoned to say we were disappointed and rather than an apology I got a very gruff response basically saying id made the choice. I thought id phone with my feedback rather than put a review in public but the arrogant response was too much. Sad really as we try to support local business but not this one any more.

My partner and I had a couple of hours to kill when our daughter attended a nearby event. We fancied an indian meal and decided to pop in. We hadn't booked in advance as it was a Monday evening, but we were made to feel very welcome on arrival and offered a table no problem. We didn't have a huge appetite so both shared a mixed pakora to start which was delicious. We then had a ceylonese korma and a Shimla mixed grill. The grill comes with salad, rice, curry sauce and a nan, which in total was perfect between us along with the korma. Both meals were very tasty, the staff were thorough in asking us to taste initially to check we were happy with the spice level. The food was particularly nice and fresh and the younger gentleman who served us was pleasant, friendly & appropriately attentive. We struggled to finish the mixed grill but they happily packaged this for us to take away by request. We really enjoyed our meal and would defo return soon.

Have not been into this restaurant in a while and due to moving back into the area thought we would try it as we really enjoy a curry. The interior has changed, has been updated but the quality of the food hasn’t. The freshness of everything served was top notch from the popadoms with spiced onions to the naan breads WOW superb so unbelievably fresh and the best flavour. I’d recommend the chicken karahi done with added green chilies for a wee bit of extra kick made to exactly my taste. Service was attentive and friendly and the food was as good as years ago!!The decor may have changed but the excellent food has not best Indian in the area by far. We ordered a take away from Shimla as we have always had really good food in the restaurant. The prices are high but we expected the same standard.Unfortunately it did not live up to expetation and the £50+ cost for 3 dishes was not worth the money. The special curry was very poor and the mixed tandoori was again poor the sauce flavorless. The portions are also very small for the prices charged,. Will use our local next time.

We called this restaurant as we knew it done deliveries. Initial call to place was a bit repedative repeating ourselves regarding our mobile number. After we ordered we waited 1 hour we called to then establish it was 5 minutes away. A further 30 minutes later a chap at the door. We refused to pay the full amount to due time which wasn’t less as the driver was extremely apologetic. But once we open the food, the nan breads were cold, the rice was not as hot as it should have been and we called to advise of this and then we had a discussion with someone that can only be described as speaking to someone who had been drinking all night and saying that his brother was a @%@#%%@. Extremely disappointed and the discussion was more about his feelings and not the food which we offered and especially at the price for 2 dinners of over £40, I do not agree with the quality of ingredients, communication with staff especially inebriated staff moaning about their family members to the general public as an apology. Won’t be ordering again. Yuk

Been meaning to post for some time about this establishment. I have been eating here for some 40 ish years and over the years have seen many changes. One thing that has remained is the quality of Asian fare coming from the kitchens. Remains up there with the best I have eaten. Take aways are always a treat but to sit in and have the food fresh to the table is worth the price. Not your run of the mill Indian so don't expect run of the mill prices. 'Value' for the money is more important. Loved the Nan masterclass last week.

My family and I ordered a massive meal for a Father's Day dinner. When we sat down to enjoy our meal, we found that the two chicken chasnis we had ordered were swimming in sauce with only 9 pieces of MINUSCULE chicken. I phoned to complain and was immediately treated with disrespect, despite my polite approach. The manager talked over me, denying that there was anything wrong with my order. When I asked for a refund for the chasnis, I was told no, that they did not "do" refunds. As well as this, the manager kept referring to me as "love", as in "no, love, those chasnis are a decent portion size" and "love, no one else has called to complain". He very abruptly offered me money off my next order, but only to the value of 1 chasnis meal, not 2, despite the fact that both lacked a decent amount of chicken. I declined and said that I wouldn't be dining in his restaurant again due to his rude nature and he replied "that's fine, love". Not a response you would expect from a restaurant owner that only had 1 table of four eating in on a Sunday night on Father's Day.

Got a take away which was just short of £30 for two curries. Both curries swimming in ghee , the lamb though very tender was hard to find and the prawns were obviously a protected species as they were equally in short supply. Both curries were purée in presentation and tasted so similar as to be hard to tell apart. Have lived in village for over thirty years and can remember when I didn't mind paying a bit more for good fare but never again . Just because we have the odd footballer up our way doesn't mean we pay stupid money for poor nosh. Very very disappointed.

Not the cheapest but certainly of the highest quality of food.

Overall the food is first class, which very few can match or even get close to. Shafiq (daddy) and Tabs are fantastic once you get to know them..........keep up the great work :)Thought I would update my review for this little restaurant. I hadn't eaten it this restaurant for years and then paid a visit some years agao and was disappointed at the cost of food (but the food was great). Since then, I've ordered lots of Shimla Cottage takeaways and I've had a change of thought after visiting a lot of other Indian restaurants in the area and lots further afield, there is NOTHING that comes close to Shafiqs cooking. This was the very first Indian food I ever ate about 30years ago and I remember that distinctive Bhuna Lamb, I can still taste it after all this time and its embedded into my pallet. The "changing times" hasn't changed Shafiqs recipes, they have always stayed true and so has the "strength" of the food. If you want bland tasting Indian food made with a stock gravy then look away and go visit most of the other restaurants that server Indian "style" food. I've asked so many times in other restaurants is their food authentic, is it home style food (despi-apna) - they reply is "Oh yes, very traditional" - 99% of them are lairs and make the food for the UK market pallet.A Bhuna (and I know my Bhuna) are made by browning the spices, adding the meat and onions and not much else, it should be a very dry dish and can be eaten with chapati/paratha etc - the way I was taught by Shafiq. (not runny and yellow in colour with load of tomatoes like most restaurants). I it should also have enough spices/chilies & garma masala to catch the back of your throat and make you take notice of the depth of flavors and time/skill required to make the dish - all relevant from Shimla Cottage.I know I've waffled on about the Bhuna, however there are dishes all traditionally cooked from scratch and made with love that will satisfy all taste buds from hot/spicy to mild and sweet, light and heavy.OK, the cost of the dishes are a little more than you would pay in other places, however this is proper cooking, traditional cooking passed down from real family members and not messed around with. I only have one gripe, thats the Pakora sauce. I remember when the restaurant was across the road, the pakora came with a little lethal pot of dark ruby red hot sauce that was divine - please bring this back..

Just back after a delicious dinner. First thing I noticed was the absence ofStrong curry smell , which I do not like. The dishes were very aromatic and tasted wonderful. Staff friendly and after asking what we liked, suggested dishes which did not disappoint. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Have been going to Shimla Cottage for takeaways for years now although stopped briefly because of small portions of meat in curries. So last night ordered pakora which was up to usual high standards as were accompaniments poppadoms etc.Problem again was the lack of meat in the lamb curry and chicken garam masala..5 tiny lamb pieces and 4 chicken pieces so basically £20 for two portions of sauce..this is our only complaint and reluctant to make adverse comments but feel improvement could be made for better value.

It's been a while but we three mates visited Shimla last night and it's as good as ever, even on a quiet Tuesday. The service has always been excellent and super friendly, and when my two indecisive friends asked for a recommendation, they got custom-made curries which were very tasty. I can't go past the chicken tikka masala, best in the business. Must go back more often...

I came here with my whole family we rarely eat out for Indian food but when we do Shimla Cottage is a must have. Every item on the menu is cooked from scratch and the taste and quality definitely reflect this. While the food is amazing the service is even better- nothing is too much bother and you feel part of the family with Shafiq and his son Tabby taking care of you. I would definitely recommend Shimla Cottage, I can guarantee you won't regret it!

Personally I don't normally like Indian food got it because of partner but I was amazed at how good it all tasted. If you looking for a lovely meal this place is the place to go

Decided to go out for a meal instead of cooling at home. We hhought we would try Shimla Cottage as we had not been for a long time. We were greeted at the door and directed to our table. Ordered drinks and then perused the menu. We were all stuck as there was so much to choose from. The starters and main courses were fantastic and for all who have commented about it being too expensive - I disagree. I will admit it is is more expensive than other similar restaurants in the area, however I am a great believer in "you get what you pay for"Thanks to all the staff for a great night with great food.

Ordered 3 different curries with rices & naan breads as a takeaway. Curries all looked the same, what little meat was in them was tough & chewy, the 2 different naan breads were burnt & hard to tell apart, the rice was mediocre. Given that meat courses ranged from £11.50 - £13.50 each & the whole bill was over £50 this was an expensive mistake, never to be repeated. Would NOT recommend at all. Spoilt my birthday dinner.

Visited Shimla Cottage last night for my daughters 9th birthday at her request. As always was greeted by Tabby, Shimla's very own BFG. My daughter quickly made it clear it was her birthday, and from that second onwards was made feel like the princess she is. We go to Shimla on the odd occasion and it never disappoints. The service you receive from Tabby and his father is always fab and nothing ever seems to much hassle. The father is still very much involved, which I think is admirable and speaks volumes of the dedication this family have to this place. Would HIGHLY recommend, yes it is a little more expensive than your average, but this is no average Indian restaurant.

Tonight after a long shift at work my husband and I wanted a takeaway for convenience. Normally we order and feel so disappointed afterwards so decided to try shimla cottage. We walked in and the son of the business ( I'm so sorry I never caught your name, could be tabby? was so hospitable we sat down in the comfortable takeaway area and had a wine and he chatted away to us. I actually felt so relaxed, we chatted so long our takeaway got put back on the hot plate! We asked for a recommendation, we had a tikka korma but it was made to order for us and was delicious as was the pakora. My husband never enjoys an Indian takeaway and tonight he has said it is the only place he will go now. I just want to say thank you for being so hospitable we will definitely be back for a sit in meal and drinks.

We travel all over the UK on business. We also eat out at various restaurants in and around Glasgow however despite staying locally to Shimla Cottage had yet to try there. After work this weekend we went in and were met at the door by Tabby and can honestly say that from the outset it was the most relaxed and friendly restaurant we have been to that I can remember. The menu is extensive and we asked for recommendations and were not disappointed. Even the pilau rice was a different league! The service from Tabby left us feeling like friends rather than customers and the ambiance of the place reflects the family involvement from door to kitchen to table. I see people have commented on the price as expensive but here's the thing...... if you want a takeaway go to the takeaway. The difference in quality of food is immediately apparent and I can honestly say we have paid more for a sit down dinner for very average food in many places. This is without doubt not the best indian restaurant we have ever been to.... it is probably one of our TOP FIVE RESTAURANTS we have ever been to. I have never, ever tasted a curry so good and the chef will add or omit any ingredients you want as all the food is made fresh to order. In short this place is a DIFFERENT CLASS! (As for the presence of his Dad, I want to eat in a place that the entire family have a desire to put the best food they can in front of you. The fact that he started the restaurant in 1973 and still wants to keep his hand in speaks for itself.)This is now our place of choice to eat and any visiting colleagues, friends or family will be sampling the food here.Ewan & Jacqui.

This please is just so expensive. We now buy take away and bring home from glasgow and only ever eat in Indians in Glasgow. It is time the father left the business and allied the don to develop and review his current market. The menu had not changed and is stuck in the 70s. Very poo value for money

This is the second time I have dined in Shimla Cottage. This visit was more out of necessity than desire due to arriving home from holiday earlier on the day. After eating 5 star cuisine for 2 weeks on holiday I wasn't sure how Shafiq's food would fair. As a family the consensus was it was better. Tired and deflated after travelling home to reality, the service provided by Shafiq and his team on a busy Friday night was prompt, yet we never felt rushed. Although clearly busy our server Tabby listened to our holiday tales with genuine interest. I love this as it makes you feel valued as not only a customer but a person. So often nowadays people are so busy they can be unwittingly rude. I can only assume that such courtesy delivered with good humour is the vital ingredient that gives Shimla Cottage such an outstanding ambience which was greatly received by 4 tired and hungry patrons. Like my previous visit I was impressed by the attention to detail involved with the table settings. None of your (more commonly nowadays) disposable tablecloths etc. Only proper linen ones and napkins, which I love.Writing the review on the food is such a tricky bit for me. We only had main courses, but even at that I am sure I cannot justify how good the flavours tasted in my description. I tried the Desi Channa Bhuna again and loved it equally as much as the first time I tried it. One of my daughters had Chicken Burryanie and the other Chicken Korma which they both demolished. My partner on the other hand was indecisive as to what to order so Tabby asked him what kind flavours and strength of spiciness he liked and then suggested few alternatives aside from the menu. This really impressed my partner and I, and is only indicative of restaurants that cook from scratch. Looking around I could see that we were not the only people enjoying our dinner. On a busy night the sound of laughter and people chatting as opposed to people venting their dissatisfaction is a clear sign that whatever it is that Shafiq and his team are doing, they are doing it brilliantly. Please do not take my word for it though. Go and experience it for yourself. I promise you will not be disappointed

My wife wanted to take me out for a birthday meal. I researched various Indian Restaurants and liked the look of this place. We had driven passed it, but had never been in. The welcome was very friendly and the inside was very nice. We went for the set meal for 2 which 4 options that we both liked. For a change I tried the Chicken Tikka Tandooria Masala and wasn't disappointed. My wife enjoyed the Lamb and to be honest we couldn't finish it all. The prices were very reasonable and will visit again next time with friends who appreciate good food.
