I came here with a few friends for a catch up as we hadn't seen each other for a while. There are lots for different things to choose from on the menu including, meals, platters and tapas. I decided to go for the italian & spanish platter as one of my friends had previously had one of the platters and said it was amazing. The platter was described as having a mix of meats, cheeses, bread and antipasti. This kind of thing is my favourite so I was looking forward to it. Unfortunately when it arrive I was disappointed. Whilst there was a mix of salami on it that was about it. It was basically a huge platter of lettuce with around 12 pieces of cured meats on it (the choice and amount of meat is what I'd expect), 3 tiny pieces of the same cheese (one piece was mainly rind so I couldn't eat it) 2 small pieces of sundried tomato and a tiny teardrop pepper. I'm not sure if there was someone new on or what but surely that shouldn't have been all you got for £20, especially when the main ingredient seemed to be lettuce. A selection of cheese shouldn't be 3 pieces of the same cheese and a selection of antipasti shouldn't just be 2 sun dried tomatoes and a teardrop pepper. Whilst it technically had all the components of how it was described, it wasn't what I expected. There was a small basket of bread that came and we didn't know who it was for. We were told bread came with all the dishes, but what arrived certainly wasn't enough for all of us - there wasn't even one piece each. My cocktail however was really nice, as was the pudding but I was so disappointed with my meal. One of my friends got the seafood platter and that looked amazing. I will point out that everyone else was very happy with their food (except the lack of bread) and this review is just about mine. I really should have said something but everyone was having such a good time, I just didn't want to spoil it. My platter was nice tasting it just not quite what I expected and certainly wasn't worth anywhere near £20.

We had a lovely meal for valentine’s we had the steak sharer was really nice then we had dessert and one of us had the white chocolate cheesecake and I have to say it was the worst cheesecake I have ever had it was a sloppy mess shame it spoiled the meal

Didn't enjoy the food at all, quiche was more like a egg flan with bacon scattered over the top, the chips were very greasy. My friends fish and chips were also very greasy. Shills used to do a lovely tempura batter on the fish making it lovely and light, not the case now.

Hosted us for a charity Burns Night. Great food and staff were great. Lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back.

We had a great Saturday night at shills. There was a bagpipe player for Burns Night who was great. The food was fantastic and the staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Looking forward to going back again soon and trying more of the menu.

Absolutely staggering from all the staff,from the chefs to the front of house. We all attended a burns night meal and the front of house staff couldn't have done enough for us, treated us all like kings and the chefs were on point with the food. Thankyou once again and will definitely be back.

Friendly service. Great coffee and food excellent. Good value. I visit regularly as it is so good. Great selection via menus of breakfast/brunch, lunch and lite bites and tapas on offer in the evening. There is also entertainment on some Thursday evenings.

Promised a lot, delivered little. Chose the downstairs room. Mistake. So poorly lit the waiter had to shine a torch on the menu for us to order. They had a deal of three tapa and a glass of wine for £25. So we ordered 6 tapa. We’d taken our coats off on arrival but soon put them back on. It was freezing. The entrance was just behind us and it’s a sliding glass door - letting tons of cold air in each time it opened. There was a curtain separating us from the door but it didn’t help. Food came quite quickly. Gambas Pil Pil. Nice large shell-on prawns but swimming in a watery sauce with no discernible heat. We couldn’t see well enough to peel them and had to ask for a light on. Cod croquettes. Too much creamy filling and not enough cod. Made the mistake of picking one up with my fingers and it just splodged everywhere: Sticky sausages. Submerged in a watery sauce instead of having a sticky glazed. Patatas Bravas. Covered in a watery tomato sauce which made them soggy and unpleasant. Spicy squid was quite nice. Padron peppers - also quite nice. We also ordered a bread basket - unaware we were getting bread anyway so only ate about a third of what we were given. Bread was delicious though. A couple who entered 10 minutes after us also put their coats back on and complained about the dark and cold. They were offered a table upstairs, as were we but being half way through our food we declined. I have to say the waiting staff were wonderful throughout - they were doing their best. The young man who brought the bill and asked how our food was listened to our feedback and said he’d go and have a word with the manager. We thought he might come and speak to us but he just sent the waiter back to say ‘sorry’. He refused our tip and I had to insist he take it as he’d done the best he could. This could be a really nice place but the heating and lighting needs sorting. As does the cooking.

Our best Sunday Lunch we have had out for a long time, the food was beautiful and the staff were great.

This place is amazing! The wine list is wonderful and linked to their ground floor store. There is currently a tapas deal (3 x tapas and 1x glass of house red, rose, or white) for £25. 3 of us got this and all loved it and left full. One got a vegetarian platter which was also a great selection! Cocktails were fab and so was the service (Leah was our main waitress and was so great with us throughout). Will be back for a staff Christmas party soon and very excited!

We got a last minute booking last Friday having just arrived in Cockermouth for the weekend. The staff were so friendly and pleasant, nothing was too much trouble. Food was really great, we shared a nachos and a seafood board, lovely bottle of wine. Would highly recommend a visit

I am in a wheelchair and have lots of dietary requirements but I found shills catered very well for both we were a family of 5 and everyone had a wonderful meal I had gluten free fish and chips followed by a gluten free lemon meringue pie. The shop also was amazing with lots of local delicacies. Great service too. Thanks for a lovely experience.

We went on a Thursday night when there was live music. Had a great night. Delicious Tapas for dinner and there was a great choice of wines , cocktails and beers.

Had an awful lunch yesterday at Shills, which is unusual. Very poor quality food. Fish goujons didn’t have any fish in - all batter, chips were dry, tasted looked awful. Salt and pepper chicken was mainly coating with very little chicken and sandwiches were again poor and tasteless. Very disappointing as we were there for a special occasion.

We popped in for a quick lunch after shopping. My partner had the chicken flatbread and I had a delicious warm cheese scone with cranberry and brie. It was a lovely chilled atmosphere, busy but walk ins available. Attentive service and my partner had the new draft ipa which was delicious. Well worth a visit when in the gem town of cockermouth.

We were a group of 16 with no reservation close to the end of the lunch serving time. We were warmly welcomed and quickly seated and served. The good was also fantastic. Recommended. Thank you!

Called in on the off chance about 5.30pm and were lucky enough to get a table. The service was polite, helpful, professional and very welcoming. The food was even better and compared to some, was very reasonable.

Excellent meal choices and lovely wine. I would Particularl like to thank Heather, offering us the brie from the lunch menu and allowing us to purchase items from the shop after it was closed. Another visit to Shills - for brunch this time. All of our group selected something different from the menu which had great choices. The food was delicious, well served with good portions sizes. Staff were friendly and helpful. What more could we want?? Looking forward to returning soon. We love the cheese and wine selection in the shop - which we enjoyed looking round after our meal.

El servicio estuvo bien y como el viernes por la noche esperaba que fuera un poco más lento ya que estaba lleno. Pedimos un plato para compartir de bistec de hierro, unas tapas y unas tablas de salsas. El curry de berenjena era bueno y las salchichas de Cumberland también, sin embargo, los otros platos no eran buenos. Porque lo que debería haber sido un buen bistec no era nada especial. Sin sabor y salsas / aderezos servidos con él no hicieron nada para ayudar. Mi amigo era GF y la mesera no nos dijo cuáles serían los sustitutos de GF para el pan en la bandeja de salsas y no vino a decirnos qué salsas estábamos recibiendo cuando preguntamos y ella dijo que nos buscaría. Como resultado, resultó que los sustitutos eran totopos con pequeñas porciones secas de zanahoria y pimiento y una pieza de apio. 6. 99 geeeez. Tuve que consultar el precio de los vinos pequeños que se pedían, ya que nos cobraban por los medianos. El otro servidor dijo que ese era el precio para un medio y cuando dije que pedí un pequeño, solo me miró y dijo Oh, está bien y no hice nada para rectificar esto. Era difícil saber el tamaño de los vinos cuando se servían en una copa de globo grande, por lo que al final de la noche me molestó un poco cuando no nos cobraron correctamente. 67. 80 por esto. ESTO NO ES TAPAS. No cocina de tapas y no tamaños de porciones de tapas. Fue una pena que nuestra velada fuera tan decepcionante como lo fue. Desafortunadamente, no puedo recomendar.

Comida deliciosa para 3. . . . mi esposa y yo fuimos por varios platos de tapas y mi hijo adolescente optó por pasteles de cangrejo. . . . abundan todos los platos muy sabrosos y vacíos. Busqué un buen restaurante para una comida familiar. Pre reservado, esto se veía perfecto? ? ! Nos colocaron abajo. No, estaba totalmente decepcionado, ¡la comida de las hijas no llegó mientras esperábamos! (¡la comida de las hijas era queso con tostadas!) preguntamos dónde estaba su comida, nos disculpamos y pedimos que volvieran a calentar la mía. Como la nuestra estaba fría por esperar hijas. Mi comida se volvió a calentar, pero el queso de las hijas con tostadas aún no había llegado. el servicio fue decepcionante, el personal estaba más interesado en otra mesa que vino después de nosotros. Al pedir la factura, la otra mesa recibió su factura. Lo siento pero totalmente decepcionado.

Just been for a lovely evening at Shills. Varied and individual tapas menu catering for a variety of preferences from myself and my vegetarian fiance. Really nice food! Langdale pale ale available in bottles, which is lovely. My fiance really liked her wine. Friendly service from all the staff, including the owner who'd made the effort to say hello to the diners and see what they thought of the reopening. Good atmosphere and nicely done out.

We visited on a midweek day when there was live music which was a young local girl who was very good. This place is very locally focused with local ales and local produce as well as local talent, and the owners were actually present in the bar. The food were all had was excellent, very good quality and standards without being overloaded. The bar also has a shop attached down the stairs, which sells more of the local produce, but although it looked very good, was closed when we were there so I am unable to make comment. On the whole excellent food and lovely atmosphere

Have been here many times both lunchtime and evening and everything has been good but will not be back after a Valentine's day disaster. Ordered Fish in tempura batter and chips with minted veg. All soggy and greasy soft greasy chips and obviously a lot of grease left on the plate ate the fish from inside the batter a few chips and left the rest. No money of the bill after telling the waitress and no apology. , partner said his meal was ok but had to send popodom back as swimming with oil. Came back just the same .! £ 46.05 for two lunches 1 cheese platter which was just ok 1 glass of wine and a small bottle of peroni. Unfortunately this was a gift from my daughter so am hoping she doesnt ask how it was.

5 of us ate here on Saturday night, service from start to finish was fabulous especially from a lovely waiter named Joe, he looked after us all night making sure everything was perfect .... and it was.Food was beautiful especially the special of Lamb stew, 2 of the party had steak and 1 had lamb burger and everyone was very pleased with the quality and taste, we had puddings and coffee again wonderful ..... Will definitely return and would recommend to friends and family. Thank you guys.

We were a family of 8 who, for a number of years traditionally meet for lunch on Christmas Eve. Our usual restaurant was unavailable, so we booked a table at Shillies, paying a deposit of £40.00. On arrival we went upstairs to the restaurant only to be told by a woman who appeared to be in charge that we were not being seated there, and were directed downstairs to an annexe to the right of the main door leading onto the street, separated by only a curtain. It was very cold, obviously due to the constant opening and closing of the door which also led to a busy delicatessen, and there was certainly no ambience. We were not happy with this situation and my daughter spoke to the woman, indicating an empty table in the restaurant large enough for our party of 8. She was told that this table was booked for later. My daughter said that when our reservation was made there had been no mention that we would not be in the restaurant proper. By now this person was not at all happy. Her face was set in stone and she said that we could have that table if we were out by a certain time. This was acceptable as anything was better than sitting in that cold annexe. Our order was taken in silence with no trace of a smile. Fortunately, the young waiting staff were pleasant and efficient, and our meals were OK. To add insult to injury when we were presented with our bill, the £40.00 deposit had not been taken into consideration and we had to ask for it to be taken off. All things considered it was not a pleasant experience, and I have no desire to return – all because of the attitude of one member of staff.

Visited here as we had a voucher as a Christmas present and unfortunately we were disappointed.Both couples left the pork nachos as they had absolutely no flavour or sauce so we’re very dry and bland.I told the waiter this and he just stood really awkwardly and agreed that he would tell the chef. I have noticed I am not the first person to say about the nachos so I hope this will be looked into.It’s a shame as previously Shills was a place I enjoyed to eat at. On the positive side- lemon meringue pie was amazing!

A definite down turn. Sorry, but disappointing food, and groups of girls clearly drunk were not asked to quieten down. Our family are very tolerant but when you can’t have conversation because of the noise created by shocking behaviour, not challenged by staff - then it is time to abandon an old favourite. The business is up for sale ... maybe this is the reason.

Came for a special birthday meal.Sad to say the service was slow and 'amateur', dirty cutlery on the table had to be replaced but most of all, even in this day and age they still advertise tapas food that has been cooked in oil that had fish or meat products in as being "suitable for vegetarians" which can never be (yes we asked the waitress). Other local places have got this message sadly not this one. After all the expectations we left rather deflated with the whole experience.

El precio total aproximadamente en el menú normal era de 6 por tapas y el vino era de 3. Just returned from an evening meal at shills what's not to like staff lovely good food and a nice drink see you soon.

We popped in for a quick lunch yesterday. We both had the sea-bass special with crab bon-bons with a side of roasted vegetables salad with orzo and dukkah. It was really excellent. Enjoyed it.

Our fabulous new landlords gave us a voucher for Shills , they are doing a £13 two course lunch it was excellent value for money beautiful cooked fish and chips and excellent deserts highly recommended

Realmente disfruté el almuerzo aquí, nunca lo había visitado antes en todos nuestros viajes a la ciudad y definitivamente no será el último. El comedor de arriba es encantador, una habitación espaciosa con mucho espacio entre los asientos. Gran menú junto con especiales, elegí pastel de pollo y puerro con papas fritas y verduras, mi esposo tenía pollo al curry. Mi comida era excelente, pollo tierno, hermosos pasteles desmenuzables, papas fritas perfectas, verduras perfectamente cocinadas también. Todo muy bien El curry de mi esposo también era genial, me dijo. No había lugar para el pastel después, se veían muy deliciosos. Gran servicio del personal. fabulosa tienda de delicatessen en la planta baja, ¡qué no te gusta aquí!

Delicious fresh food. Excellent service nothing was too much trouble. We wanted breakfast but arrived at 12.00 noon, the friendly staff saw the chef and obliged us with our request.

Visited on a Friday evening, so it was quite busy which added to the atmosphere but we were served quite quickly. Really good choice of different sorts of dishes, so choosing was difficult but everything eventually chosen was delicious.

perfect sunday afternoon on the wine tasting with these guys, i drank far too much and spent a forture but loved the whole day - great to deal with these guys as they know their onions and they are not gardeners!

Had an evening meal here - lovely atmosphere, great food (had the fennel and butternut squash lasagne and garlic bread -delicious!), good choice of drinks, and don’t forget the pudding! Nice to see they have a breakfast and lunch menu, gives us an excuse to come back

Been going regularly to Shills for lunch since it opened. Always found food to be excellent. Went the other day, four adults and a child. Were not made welcome by the waiter, not for the first time either. This relates to one waiter only. He is unfriendly, unwelcoming and quite obnoxious. Normally there are at least 3 boards of specials at lunchtime. This time the was only 1. After we had ordered, the waiter put up 3 more boards which contained some meals that we would have ordered. We asked why they hadn't been displayed previously. We received a curt reply that they'd only just come out, 30 minutes after they'd started serving lunch. Every other member of the staff is friendly and helpful, pity he isn't.

What a lovely place to go for lunch or coffee to catch up with friends. Small restaurant area down stairs with more seating upstairs. Also a small deli with varied choice of produce. I bought some cheese and bread which was delicious. Had lunch there which was very nice. I had cheese board with lovely choice of cheeses.

Fabulous range of cakes. Tea served in beautiful teapots. Jess the dog made most welcome with bowl of water and biscuits. Friendly and fast service. Will become a regular stop for us when ever we visit Cockermouth.

A pleasant upstairs room, not too busy. Pleasant and efficient staff. Delicious food served with no delay. A good choice of specials.

As well as the restaurant there is a deli attached. This has become our go to place to buy cheese when in Cockermouth. The staff are friendly and really know their stuff and can make recommendations based on what you are looking for and give you samples to try before you buy. Prices are reasonable, too.
