V warm welcome, a few minutes early, not a problem, warm and welcoming restaurant, lovely table, the personalised menu is genius in so many ways, very friendly staff, it felt personal, it felt like I was in a very special club. All tables full and this restaurant is in the middle of nowhere that says a lot. Food was so nicely prepared and presented, it all tasted FAB. The twist with foraged ingredients and I felt a care for nature and ingredients gives this restaurant and it's staff a 10/10. No surprise the feedback is so strong. We will v much look forward to visiting again, and trying the Cafe, Sunday Lunch, looking forward to it. And to top it a lovely drive .

We went last night as an early wedding anniversary dinner, we were unable to attend on the actual night, but that's fine. From the welcome at the beginning to the time we left was just a great evening for us both. Having visited Shillingfords a few years ago in Sudbury theatre, Carl's expertise in the kitchen has increased yet again. It was a memorable evening, fabulous food of course, and things I had never eaten before but will now as a result of yesterday's dinner - pigeon for example, who knew it was so tasty. The location is relaxed and efficient brought about I imagine by Beth's clear direction and management of the restaurant team. Everyone who was eating at a similar time to us was just loving it, there were lots of "oh that's just wonderful" comments, "I've never tasted anything so good". We came for a celebration event and as it's quite a drive for us, it is always worth it. Luckily we are booked to come again with family in August. If you haven't tried it you really must, in a nutshell, what is the food like as a friend asked, the answer is "non-adultered, natural, well-cooked, tasteful foods with the right combinations". Just perfect. Thank you for a memorable evening.

I had heard lots of good things about Shillingfords. So when the chance to dine here arose, I was only to happy to join the party. What I found was a very special place to eat and shop. Carl has brought his flair and talent to deliver excellent food in a very special environment. Foodies can spend lots of money here in the shop which has a nice selection of quality produce.

As suggested, my friend and I chose 3 savoury and 1 sweet course from the menu when we booked. Our table was upstairs. On the table we found menu cards with our name on and our chosen courses. Everything brought to our table looked beautiful and tasted even better. With lots of fresh, seasonal products as promised. The rosé we had chosen was a good match. Very friendly and competent service. We had a truly enjoyable evening!

So good we came back for a second time and weren't disappointed. Had a faultless meal. Kedgeree was lovely and nicely spiced. Duck with plum jus was also lovely and the pear tarte tatin was great. Puddings often let a meal down but the last two we have had here have been exceptional. Great value, lovely friendly staff and an attractive venue are icing on the cake. The food is top notch, would highly recommend and will return (again).

This is a truly excellent discovery. Carl and Beth Shillingford run a well thought out cafe/ restaurant/ deli that delivers exciting and inventive food. And, thanks to Covid in patrt many dishes can also be baught and taken home to be re-prep[ared and losing nothing in the transfer.. Carl is a clever and inventive cook who likes to explore other food cultures so expect to find opeiental, Spanish, Italian etc weeks in progress. And be sure to return time and again. If just passing the coffee is superb and very well presented and the deli selection is very likely to tempt you. We rate Foragers very highly indeed.

The setting is very rustic and we ate downstairs in the former stable, My wife had pheasant pizza , most enjoyable and I had cassoulet , again very good. Beth and Carl have been keeping the people of Pebmarsh and surrounding villages fed with delicious takeaways during lock down. There are lots of lovely dishes to buy from their cafe/deli and bring home to eat. We had a superb breakfast there recently and lunch is also available. The restaurant is open on a Saturday evening (restricted numbers) with themed food. If we can't get away to our favourite holiday destinations we can enjoy Carl's special evenings including Italian, Spanish and Indian. Sunday lunch is also available to eat in or take away. All covid 19 requirements are in place, hand wash, space between tables and necessary social distancing. I admire their innovation and determination to keep going during difficult times. We will return soon as they definitely deserve continuing support from their customers.

During the COVID19 lockdown Shillingford’s at the Foragers Retreat have been doing some absolutely delicious takeaway food options which my family have taken advantage of multiple times. We had Carl and Beth’s homemade Chinese takeaway which incorporated interesting foraged ingredients into fan-favourite Chinese dishes, like Fillet beef and Oyster mushroom stir fry, as well as sweet and sour wild boar, and starters like crayfish toast! We have also had homemade pizzas (on friday nights) that were reasonably priced and the tastiest pizzas from around here. These also had some unusual but extremely tasty toppings such as a prawn and wild sea grass pesto pizza which used foraged sea grasses such as samphire and sea aster. All the food we have had from the Shillingford’s takeaway service has been delicious, fresh and timely with a great Foragers twist on it! You cannot get better food to keep yourself happy during lockdown, keep up the good work Shillingford’s

What a fab place! We enjoyed ordering in advance from an interesting and intriguing menu and although I’d kept a note of what we’d chosen, there was no need as when we got to our table there were individual and beautiful bespoke menus for each of us. Lovely touch! The table menu also give you a chance to check you’re happy with the order that food will arrive, as depending what you pick from the veg/meat/fish you may have chosen one thing more as a starter than a main as it isn’t always obvious when you choose. The bar/downstairs area (an old stable block) was full of character and we’d definitely go back to sit there and test out their breakfast/brunch/lunch menu. The restaurant is upstairs (I don’t know if there is a lift for people with limited mobility?), and seats 20-30 I’d say. Ambiance, temperature and lighting were all just right. It’s smart-casual, service was efficient but informal and there was a mix of friends families and couples dining. All our food was good, portions are a generous starter size and we had 3 savoury courses and a dessert and were comfortably sated but not stuffed, so just right. The cheeseboard was brilliant, lots of interesting and/or homemade bits and bobs on there as well as generous pieces of cheese and biscuits. We saw one person decide to order an extra course before his dessert and they rustled it up no problem. The only suggestion I’d make is to explain what the homemade breads and the cheeses are as i had to get the waiter back to ask him. Definitely recommend!

The move to new premises has not enhanced the offer. As sometimes happens the very reasons for popularity and patronage are left wanting when success beckons. Prices and portion sizes now make this original Sudbury pop up restaurant an expensive option when sampling several dishes. My final straw was a £10 cheese board which left me searching for the value..Our bill no longer reflected the reasons we patronised the original concept ..shame to say but we will not be making the journey again...

It is great to see Shillingfords (Foragers) doing do well in their new location. Carl is a first class cook and does forage for much of the food. There is a limited choice in consequence but imaginative choices cooked to perfection. You choose your menu a day or two in advance for the upstairs restaurant but there are no more than 20-30 covers. The menu changes regularly and depends very much on availability and the time of year. Beth runs the front of house is is a bundle of energy, a lovely person. To guarantee a table bookings should be made well in advance but frequently seats become free so worth following on Facebook. There is cafe downstairs that also provides tapas and other tasty nibbles. These people really deserve success as they have worked so hard for it and the results speak for themselves. Makes you wish you lived in Pebmarsh.

What a delight to dine at the Forager's retreat with the lovely Carl and Beth. Their new business here has really taken off and it it is not difficult to see why. Carl is a talented Michelin star Chef who forages most of the food for his inventive dishes whilst Beth and her team are front of house. This time we enjoyed wild mushroom pancakes, mushroom stroganoff, haunch of red deer, scallop wrapped in Dover sole followed by lavender and honey ice cream and wild blackberry sorbet. Each and every course was fantastic! The reviewer who says they don't like being asked to order in advance misunderstands the concept. This is foraged food for a small probably 25 covers restaurant and pre-ordering helps them to avoid food waste. I much prefer this approach to a huge restaurant menu and being told that particular dish is not available. Keep doing what you are doing Carl and Beth it works well for those of us who enjoy your concept.

Well, Shillingfords is definitely a restaurant that's different. With the proprietors always there, Carl and Beth run a tight ship. Carl is the chef who also forages for much of his dishes, with Beth always front of house. You can eat formally upstairs, though you must book - they are often booked weeks in advance - or informally downstairs with a limited menu. Carl puts a large tasty, one pot meal on the bar, and when it's gone, it's gone. There are lovely 'tapas' style bits and bobs to nibble while having a drink. You don't have to eat, you can just sit there, having a drink and soaking up the atmosphere. Dogs welcome outside in the courtyard garden. I cannot recommend this eatery more highly.

We have been meaning to go to this restaurant for ages and we managed it on my birthday last week. What an experience it was - the most special birthday meal I have had in years. A couple of weeks before we received the menu and we chose four course each as they suggested that this was best and it was! We arrived in the small intimate restaurant and each of our menus was typed out and presented on our table for us - it was very nice. Beth has the most charming smile and couldn't do enough to help with serving us and the food cooked by Carl was absolutely amazing. I had a chestnut millefeille which was so tasty and unusual for a starter, following homemade tasty bread! This was followed by home-smoked sea trout on a poached egg and homemade muffin with a beautiful hollandaise sauce. The combination of flavours was superb and the sea trout was by far the best I have ever tried. The main of wild boar en croute had the most incredible damson jus to go with it and my hazelnut and medlar icecream was a lovely end to a fabulous meal. The wine and even the coffee afterwards was also excellent. This place is a hidden gem and I know they are moving premises soon so can't wait to hear where they end up because I would travel miles to eat here again. A stunning unforgettable meal.

I visited Shillingfords for the first time last night, having wanted to go there for ages. I was not disappointed. I loved the ambience, the food was excellent (I had delicious gnocchi with wild garlic followed by mallard breast and ice cream/sorbet) and it was all so well presented. The service was great too - Beth makes you feel very welcome and Carl came out of the kitchen to talk to diners at the end of the evening. I liked the idea of the small plates of food which, for me, meant that I had enough food without feeling too 'stuffed' at the end of the evening. Also, we had the option of ordering bread (four different types - delicious) and cheese or ice/cream sorbet on the night. It was also good to have reasonably priced wines. I can't wait to go back!

Yes the food is delicious but no one wants to wait for nearly an hour between courses and when pointing this out to the staff to be told its because there is only one person in the kitchen! I can’t fault this restaurant. The first time we went I wasn’t sure if it would live up to my expectations - it did...and more! It’s an interesting way of dining, small plates that you choose beforehand...the menu is the same all month (and I admit to being excited each month to see what’s coming next). The menus are designed around what is available and what can be foraged....which means I’ve eaten things I’ve never eaten before. The owners are a delight (you don’t see much of Karl as he’s creating magical dishes in the kitchen) but Beth is present and greats everyone as an old friend. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of visiting Shillingfords...but, be warned, it’s small and can only fit so many diners (I love that they’re not cramming more tables in or rushing people) and it’s a pop up restaurant so only open Thurs-Sat and is at the top of the Quay theatre (so not for the less mobile). For a Saturday evening you need to book ahead, but do, it’s worth it!

Our fourth visit to the lovely Beth and very talented Carl’s pop-up restaurant. The best food we’ve ever had. Fresh and amazing flavours and with a monthly changing menu it’s always exciting. Be back soon!

The key word is foraged ( not quite bush tucker trials) dont expect the usual array of restaurant food and you will not be disappointed. This is a pop up restaurant , the menu is not known until a few days prior so its a bit of a gamble , you may not like all of the dishes on offer . All well prepared but can be very untypical not all of our party were impressed by their personal taste restricted choices

Really enjoyed our evening at Shillingfords, amazing place - really cosy and excellent service, I believe from the lovely Beth. Food incredible, all good, however the bread was just outstanding and such a good choice of food. Lovely choice of wine and drinks too. I would 100% recommend this place, I am veggie, husband is not and we both really loved it - wish it was a little closer to Colchester!

I've been to Shillingford's so many times now and it just gets better each time. Their small plates are great as it gives you a few more choices rather than a traditional starter-main-dessert type meal. Recently I had sea aster pasta, loin of fallow deer, kid goat curry and ice cream (rose petal and pineapple weed). I'd always recommend starting with their bread because it's so tasty! Beth and Carl use seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, some of which they forage - everything is delicious and gives the opportunity to try some different foods. I highly recommend dinner here, just make sure and book in advance as it's got quite a waiting list!

We had heard great things about this place and we were not disappointed. We were greeted with a lovely warm welcome. The bread to start was really lovely. All the courses were so tasty, well presented and a perfect portion size. The venison with the gravy was amazing. Plate licking!! We were offered extra bread at any course to mop up the sauce/gravy. A faultless evening and would very highly recommend going. I’m looking forward to a return visit

We ate here a number of times when attending a show and enjoyed it very much indeed. The produce used was very fresh and beautifully cooked. They also stock a good choice of wines. The service is excellent and if you are seeing a show they ensure you are fed on time!

It is always a pleasure to enjoy an evening at Shillingfords being well looked after by the ever amiable Beth and to sample Carl's culinary delights, he never fails to impress with his foraged and locally sourced food. This time was no exception; the standout dishes for us were the kid curry with foraged spices and the herb tartlet together with a wild watercress salad. I am not normally a fan of watercress but this was amazing! We finished off with cherry pavlova served with a raspberry posset and gooseberry sorbet. A fine dining experience at affordable prices, the bill for two of us came to £69 including drinks, which is excellent value for this exceptionally different and tasty food. Well done Carl and Beth and we look forward to visiting Shillingfords again soon.

Shillingfords is unique. A pop-up restaurant situated in the Quay Theatre. All of the seasonal dishes are prepared with foraged foods collected by the chef, Carl Shillingford, along with locally sourced ingredients. The result is wonderful and delicious food, served in small dishes (you select a number of these dishes). Beth (front of house) will explain everything you need to know (and does it with real enthusiasm. This place is special - Book Early!!

My wife & I dined here yesterday evening and thoroughly enjoyed the lovely food, wine and attentive service. It's difficult to add to the many positives of this unique dining experience - which are already well documented in the multitude of reviews rated excellent on T.A., but worth mentioning that the food portions suited my wife admirably (she always says she would prefer a few tasty starters rather than a bulky main course) and also that our wine ( a grenache-style rose) was excellent at a very reasonable £17. All in all, a most enjoyable dining experience.

We celebrated our 30th Wedding anniversary at Shillingfords with friends and had a fabulous time. The atmosphere is really vibrant, everyone has pre-ordered their meals, so there is no pondering over the menu. We just relaxed with a glass of wine and enjoyed the evening. Food was fab, the lovely Beth was very attentive and knowledgeable, Carl bought our final course out, was lovely to see him, such a great chef. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend the restaurant, will definitely be back.

Great pop-up restaurant on the top floor of the Quay Theatre. Book well in advance as it’s really popular! Foraged and locally sourced ingredients cooked and blended together to perfection. What Carl does to food and the attention to detail is amazing and Beth’s service is exceptional. The method of pre-ordering to avoid waste is a great idea and the method of portion sizing at affordable prices is inspired. Would highly recommend.

We visited Sudbury for the weekend and having noted the great reviews were fortunate to secure a table. The food is based on seasonal produce and some is foraged which makes it more special. Beth was able to talk through our menu choices and the dishes were very well cooked and presented. Definitely recommend and very reasonably priced.

All I can say is amazing. I’m at a loss for words at the amazing quality of the food, the service and the amazing atmosphere. 3 hours and 4 courses later I’ve eaten falafel, scallops, guinea fowl and an exceptional amount of rhubarb (that’s not a bad thing). The service was amazing and the place had a quirky yet relaxed atmosphere. I’d reccomend it to anyone and I’m sure I’ll be back.

Hired the Strawberry Teapot for Afternoon tea on Sunday 1st for my uncle’s 80th birthday. Was a breeze to organise. India and the staff were helpful with allergies and vegetarianism and the food was lovely! A delicious afternoon tea at The Strawberry Teapot combined with a trip down the river with the lovely people at the Stour River Trust made for a perfect day! Thank you!

We chose the Lodge for my dad's 80th birthday celebrations. We could not have chosen anywhere better. There were 22 of us. The food was amazing, service impeccable and the Staff could not have been more accommodating and helpful. We will definitely return, as will so many of the first timers in the party. A real hidden gem

I have meant to try the pie mash shop in Sudbury for ages but only got round to it today. I'm really sorry I didn't go before now as it was excellent. I only had a single pie and mash but it was plenty for me. The pie was perfect and the liquor was really good. I will definitely go back.
