Best chip shop in Sudbury by far! Food can not be faulted, and I have tried plenty of different chip shops in the area. Nice to find one that is actually worth the money. Also nice that they accommodate for vegetarians because it’s hard to come by in chip shops. Staff are friendly too and service is quick. Definitely recommend.

My wife and I have dined at the Codfather now 5 times, always enjoying cod and chips which have been first class. Last Saturday, I went ‘of piste’ and ordered the grilled plaice, chips and roasted vegetables. When the waitress brought our meals to the table I was absolutely stunned. It was beyond my wildest expectations and looked superb… large, succulent and beautifully cooked including the fries (to die for) and the roasted vegetables. All washed down with a very good chilled bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. I am in my 70s and have eaten in many great restaurants. The last time I had such a super grilled plaice was in a pub next to the fish market at Newlyn in Cornwall which you would expect. But in Sudbury? It really was an excellent meal and I couldn’t recommend the Codfather more highly.

My parent brought me here after several visits as food is delicious. Grilled fish is very fresh with a good range and Gluten Free! Service is very warm and friendly. Highly Recommend.

Best fish and chips money can buy! The homemade grilled chicken burgers are amazing!!! The prices are better than most takeaways around. What more could one wish for. Be mindful if you are not eating in the restaurant as you'll need CASH to take away.

I had a delicious piece of cod.....a real treat as it's not easy to find gluten free - this was crispy batter and lovely fresh cod..... perfect!

Took our grandchildren to Sudbury for a day out and were disappointed because our usual fish and chip shop "Micks Fish and Chips" was closed for holiday. We went to The Codfather instead. We all ordered different things but my husband and I ordered Cod and chips. The portions were ok but the chips were dry and the fish not flaky they could take lessons from our usual shop as they are always lovely - never dry and fish always thick and flaky. . Charged £3.50 for a soft drink and almost £3 for a cup of tea. Then to top it all they added 10% service charge - not that there was anything wrong with the service but I have not been to a restaurant in a long time that added service charge automatically. Will not be returning.

Spoke to the manager and he still charged us a service charge and too £5.00 off for the scampi yet I paid £7.00 for chips and mushy peas! Do not bother to go there. The manager was so disingenuous and it spoiled our anniversary.

A group of us had fish and chips in the dine in restaurant. Very good service. Nice place. Excellent menu,good choice. Some of us had haddock and chips with sides of mushy peas. Really lovely fresh fish with excellent chips. Mushy peas nice too. Very good portion size. We had four large pots of tea to share. A couple of us had grilled cod with vegetables and chips,again very tasty and well presented. Even with ten percent added for service it was good value. We will return next time in the area. Recommended.

The restaurant is set in the centre of this lovely historic town. Our waitress was excellent. The menu extensive and the portion of the meals were huge. The food was well presented and of good quality.

Late lunch. Very quiet. I had king prawns with baby potatoes and stir fried vegetables. Everything was cooked to perfection and very tasty without overpowering the taste of the fish. Staff were very polite and friendly. The best fish restaurant.

Went and ate an early dinner at The Codfather. Almost empty at 6pm. Staff were polite. Nice meal, middle skate was great. 10% added to bill for service charge.

Visited The Codfather in Sudbury after hearing other people's reviews. I settled on a large haddock and chips, with mushy peas and curry sauce, with my obligatory black coffee. I certainly wasn't disappointed when my food arrived. Lovely crisp batter on my rich fresh fish, nice crisp chips and lovely sides, it also came with a wedge of lemon and tartar sauce. The fish was fantastic and is delivered regularly from Grimsby or Billingsgate Market and as you would expect is fully traceable, back to the boat that landed it. Food was great. Staff were friendly and attentive, but not constantly checking on you. The venue was bright, clean comfortable and relaxing

Was invited here for lunch by my parents. Having been previously curious about visiting the restaurant, I naturally jumped at the chance. I had a large fried cod. The chips were to die for as others have mentioned, and the size of the meal was very adequate. Be hungry... Regarding takeaway, I think it's a mistake to not eat this sort of quality as soon as it's served, rather than drive it home 5 miles 1st. It seems the grumblers are doing this. Personally, I very much enjoyed it and happily stuffed my face. Haha

The service at the counter yesterday evening, February 20th, was an absolute disaster! While the lady who initially served me was pleasant, the young fellow with braces on his teeth who took over was downright appalling. He was rude, inattentive, didn't make eye contact, and was abrupt. Despite my efforts to remain courteous, he continued to be disrespectful. Even worse, two other staff members witnessed his behavior without intervening. I'm giving him a chance to shape up—if he improves his attitude, I'll consider changing my review. If not, I'll be taking my business elsewhere, just around the corner, there is absolutely no need to treat your loyal customers with contempt like he did.

Lovely food, only had takeaway haddock and chips so not an enormous trial of their menu but what I had was very nice. Chips are huge but tasty. Slightly expensive but on a Sunday night when everything else is closed it's a selers market so can't really complain. I'd go again.

Thought i would try this place as i hadnt been there before and live local Ordered 3 large cod and chips for me...my wife..and my 18 yr old son. Didnt really take much notice what they were dishing up..just paid..and took the bag home..(about 7 minutes) When we took the cod and chips x3 out of the bag there was a funny smell..abit like bleach...i broke abit off and tasted it..well it was definately off !..hence the smell. It was stone cold also..in the space of ten minutes. The chips were also cold and were more like sharp offcuts and barely cooked..didnt bother tasting them I phoned the shop about six times but no answer. The next day i got my wife to phone them again..eventually a member of staff answered the phone..she explained the problem and they said "if you dont like our food..dont come here again..you are banned" Well make your own minds up ! A few days later i read similar stories on my local community Facebook group..seems it wasnt a one off...!

Absolutely delicious huge portions of well cooked fish and chips. A real find in the lovely town of Sudbury! I was delighted to see middle skate on the menu which was cooked to perfection. Good friendly service and very competitive prices. We will definitely return on our next visit to the area!

My server was rude. Probably the worst customer service at a till I've ever received. There was no interaction at all. Felt I was a burden. When he handed me our food. No eye contact. Literally threw it on the counter without looking at me and walked away..asked him a quick question. Still didn't turn to talk but spoke a couple of words looking the other way. The others in there were just all standing there. Just clinical . Felt awkward. I won't go back again.. Learn customer relations and how to retain your customers. If I could give zero star atmosphere & service. I would. Food was average . At the end of our meal half of everyone's meals was left uneaten..( 4 people ) I can only hope one day another competitor opens up nearby and people will realise the Codfather was not so good after all.

What a lovely find. Not just a takeaway but a very clean and lovely restaurant with all Memorabilia related to its title. A really good menu . Caters for everyone. I had the hallumi and humous meal and my partner had yummy cod and chips. Really tasty. Lovely courteous and attentive staff and great value. Thank you . We will return 👍

One of the best fish and chip shops I’ve been too. Both take away and eat in is good. Scampi is perhaps the best I’ve eaten. Fish is really good and chips are nice. Service good in the restaurant I would recommend it if you want a chippy fix.

We had a lovely meal here, the nicest chips ever, not greasy, the fish was to die for. Food was piping hot too. Girl who served us was friendly and efficient. Spotlessly clean restaurant. We will definitely be back!

Traveling from the United States me and my fiance tried this place out. We ordered the vegan calamari and the vegan fish and chips. The calamari is real delight to eat. The vegan fish is ok to say the least. I felt like it was missing something in flavor. But it was still edible regardless. The service was also ok, but I was a bit confused with the 10% service charge. I've been to restaurants in the states where a service charge is added if it was over a several amount of people. But the fact that we ate as just myself and my fiancé did throw me off a little. Overall, in the end its still a good and nice restaurant. I even liked the decor as well.

Amazing! Went for my daughter’s 12th birthday on Xmas eve. Lovely table with plenty of room. Amazing meal tasted lovely and good portion sizes. And they went above and beyond to help present a cake for my daughter. Highly recommend

Ate from here 2 nights in a row. First meal was really nice. Then second meal a huge difference. Fish was OK, but the Cumberland sausage was stone cold in the middle, so didn't eat them. A little disappointed.

Have enjoyed a chippy tea here many times. Always a great selection of fresh fish to choose from and some good options if you don't want fish and chips. Tempura king prawns are delicious!

I had scampi and chips, hubby had regular cod and chips.both of us had lattes. Best chips, superb cod and scampi. We are in fact planning to make the Codfather our go-to fish and chip shop. Their chips are better than The Hook in Halstead - it all was to be honest. It may be further than our local but it’s well worth the effort. Thank you to the staff there, we loved it.

Freezing day. Nice cup of hot tea followed by very nice rock and chips for me, and plaice and chips for my wife. Ideal on cold winters day. Only downside, people didn’t shut the door properly so very cold draft.

Very tough cod - overcooked or left to wait for a long time. One piece tasted of an ammonia tang. Chips definitely under par. Very disappointing for the enormous cost. Had expected much better on reading reviews

The CODFATHER has to be one of my favourite fish & chip shops i have EVER visited. I went there on the 18th of November with my partner and we were greeted by two lovely waitresses. The food was amazing and we both left stuffed. Definitely will be visiting there again soon.

After reading the reviews I thought I'd give it a try found that the fish and chips was very average very dry wasn't very satisfied would have done better at home by myself. And also portion size was poor..

My friend and I popped in here on the first Sunday of October 2023. We were out sightseeing and decided to pop into this fish and chip shop to get a bag of chips each. We then sat on a bench nearby to eat our chips. I have to say we both thoroughly enjoyed our chips. They were probably the best chips I have ever tasted. They were big and chunky and fluffy, just the right texture and taste. We both at all of them. They were so lovely and enjoyable and I don’t think I’m ever going to find any chips as nice as these again. Well done to The Codfather. I live in Cornwall and sadly won’t be able to pop back to this restaurant, but if I lived near Sudbury, I would definitely be a frequent visitor. So good !

Very disappointed today. I had skate which was literally cooked to death, batter hard. My granddaughter got sprayed with tomato sauce on opening the lid, the same thing to me with tartar sauce, my daughter had to run out and buy a top for my granddaughter because hers was absolutely smothered in sauce. No recompense was offered, just a sorry from the waitress.There were just 4 of us and the bill came to £61.05 😲 that's drinks, skate, scampi and sausage in batter all with chips for children.

I rang to verify some allergen information and an incredibly rude man answered the phone. He didn’t have the patience to have a conversation with me so shouted at me and then hung up. Simply awful service.

Use The Codfather regularly. Never had a poor meal nor a cold meal. Portions are large.

I collected take-away fish and chips and just want to say how good the food is, the gluten-free batter is excellent and the chips lovely too. The staff aren't very chatty, but do a good job. Thanks guys!

The food is delicious, but there are little things missing. Like the little pots of tartar sauce, the little touches that make such a difference. I would have given 5 stars in the past, but there is just something missing. They are quite expensive too.

Really rude staff, dirty tables and ripped seats. My wife's food had a dead fly on it. You couldn't make it up! We were so disappointed.

My big complaint, transaction fee is charged against the customer. I used my debit card but still they passed the charge to me. Very unusual and unwelcome.

Quality of food has picked back up and one of the best places for its chips that I know of.

Medium cod and chips. Have had more fish on a fish finger from the supermarket. When I phoned to question if there had been a mistake. Was told No that’s a medium. Definitely a medium. No question. As you can see from the picture very small. No attempt to explain, or apologies, nothing. They laughed at me down the phone when I said I’ve had bigger fish fingers. Was very disappointed, have never written a bad review before, but this we so disappointing. I certainly won’t be going here again.

Visited on a Sunday around 2 food was amazing restaurant wasn't very busy so didn't wait to long for meal. Plenty of options on menu if you don't want fish. Portions a good size including salad. I opted for scallops served around 6 scallops nice size with chunky chips and salad. Would say bit too much salad dressing for my liking but that's just my taste. Would say some background music would enhance the ambience of the restaurant . Definitely be going back

My husband and I stopped for a lovely Fish and chip lunch. The fish was amazing and the portion sizes was great. We definitely didn't eat for the rest of the day. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I really liked the interior of the place and found it to be very clean. There is a good selection to choose from on the menu and found it to be really good value.

The food was fantastic, the place was clean but the price was high. Two cod and chips plus pot of tea was £35.

Always great food from here. Only go as a treat now and again as can be expensive.

Great local fish and chip shop with attached restaurant that servers fresh cooked food. A particular favourite with the children and I like the grilled fish.
