Called in on off chance for a table, for evening meal. Probably best to book as really small space, and limited tables. Food excellent, really big portions, enough to fill you up for the night. Staff really pleasant and friendly.

Disappointed , it may be a good place to eat , the website says dogs allowed but when we entered we were told dogs not allowed inside , this should be made clear on their website , went a little further round to the Black Horse where we were welcome in the bar with our dog and had an excellent lunch as well .

Was recommended here by a family member. Was very disappointed. Lack of customer service when told to just “find a table.” Waitress challenged us when they tried to give us a wrong meal which the waitress had written down incorrectly. They then forgot about one of our parties meals and when asked, acted like it was our fault! Young man behind bar appeared rude and spoke very abruptly when asked where the missing meal was. Not what you’d expect. Beef was bland and chewy. Usually eat at the Owl and the Otter and will be going back there rather than here. Chips were lovely, but cold. Gravy like luke warm water. Very disappointing.

First visit for our two cousins...4 meals ordered...Fish and chips..fab, Chinese style curry, fab. Pie and chips, fab. 20 oz MIXED GRILL SAD AND DRAB... NO SAUSAGE, NO BLACK PUDDING AND NO MUSHROOMS...also..one of our party was served a warm flat pint of Bira Morretti lager, which we complained about and was changed...it had to have been standing in the tray...When the mixed grill arrived it was drab...my cousin insisted I didn't complain...but I'm writing this review....first time visit, which annoyed me, because I recommended it to them...😠

Was visiting the area for a few days and pencilled in several local places to eat. Ate here on the first night and ended up coming back without visiting anywhere else as planned as we enjoyed it so much. I had the rib eye steak then the mixed grill and my wife had the sea bass and salmon. Fabulous food and excellent value. The staff were also really friendly. Would totally recommend the place and visit again.

Went in for a meal after visiting Beamish. Lovely old world pub. Food was good and great price (but I'm a Southerner and prices are high down south but my Norther friends thought it was great value as well) Staff were friendly but not overly attentive, we never got asked if we would like anything else after the main and I had to wait a bit to catch their eye to ask for the bill to be told I have to go to the bar to pay (which I have never done before unless ordering at the bar) I don't suppose I will be up that way again but would recommend to anyone visiting Beamish.

The positives are – it’s a rustic restaurant perfectly located at the entrance to Beamish Museum. In the summer there are seats outside; so ideal for family and friends to sit with a cool pint and order some traditional English food. Inside it’s rustic but certainly clean; with the obvious Shepherd and Shepherdess theme. The Menu is simple (Gordon Ramsey style) so you should be getting their best offering. Food quality wise – there seems to be a competent Chief behind the scenes doing some tasting of the food. The Chicken Liver Pâté starter we all ordered – was different from my expectation – and was delicious. A large variety of alcoholic treats are on offer too. Price-wise – it’s mid-range. The negative: it would not be fair to judge any restaurant on its service level – when it’s trying to get back to normal after COVID – but service is still an important part of the dining experience. We all ordered steaks – two medium rare and mine was medium. Only one of us got a pink-looking steak, and I got my steak well done – without any pink at all. We also ordered extra vegetables instead of chips. They completely forgot that we asked for more veg – which if they could not have served – should have said so. So they got two steaks wrong and the veg I had to remind them of. But in my mind “new staff, and the inventory is probably a bit low – forget it since the steaks are delicious!” My well done 10 oz Sirloin was exceptionally delicious. And nowadays – my eating habits are a lot more “normal” and I get satiated a lot easier. I was full from the Sirloin and salad that came with it. The steaks saved the night – which you can’t really ask for more. Note – the seating arrangements was its normal “pre-COVID” the evening we went. So only about 1 metre apart from what I saw. The pandemic aside – it tends to spoil your evening if you are seated next to a rowdy group of people who are using foul language and bantering; there are no partitioning for the tables for a more private experience. So be ready to be tolerant and sociable when you go.

The food here used to be magnificent! Returned today and the quality was very poor, hardly any filling in the pie with bland, lumpy mash and no sign of the beautiful dish of seasonal veg of old, few soggy peas and carrots. Had no accompanying gravy and what appeared on request was again lumpy and tasteless, not the delicious homemade gravy they used to do. The pie itself had a thick soggy bottom and very little flavour to the filling that was there. The chips were nice but the fish was very dry and over cooked, again nothing like the beautiful, fresh, hearty cod of before. Paid £6 for a pudding that took gwenty mins to arrive and was just a domed shaped microwaved sponge that you get two for £1 in all supermarkets. With custard, again lumpy. To be fair the price has been reduced but it was still incredibly disappointing and we wont return. I give an extra point for the staff who although they were incredibly busy were lovely and doing their very best. Avoid unless having drinks only

Lovely place in lovely surroundings. Unfortunately, poor staff attitude. We asked for Sunday lunch menu upon being seated, our drinks order was taken and promptly delivered. The Sunday roasts were on menu along with beef baguette. Unfortunately the rest of the sunday menu contained a lot of dishes we wouldn't choose, however I chose the beef and my husband beef baguette. Whilst waiting to have food order taken, I heard other customers discussing that there wasn't any beef left. We decided not to stay as there wasn't anything else we would have eaten from this limited menu and paying for the drinks, I asked the waitress would it not have been wise when giving us the menu and seating us and getting drinks, to have informed us what was not available? She just shrugged her shoulders and mumbled "huh sorry".She clearly was not interested at all. Lacked customer service skills. We went elsewhere in the locality and were given a beautiful meal by excellent, well trained staff.

While staying in Beamish we visited The Shepherd & Shepherdess a couple of times for drinks and sat outside. There are lots of tables but they do border the car park and there is no actual 'beer garden', not unpleasant though and it is a large area. There is a children's play area. The staff were very friendly and it felt Covid safe (hope that won't be relevant for too much longer!!). In a good location just outside Beamish Museum so a good place to have a drink or eat if you've been visiting the museum. We decided to eat in the pub one evening and just made last orders for food at 8 pm. The food is what I would class as 'good pub grub' and it was very good but huge portions, we sent back almost as much as we ate which I hate doing. The lasagne was homemade and very tasty and served with a huge salad, chips and garlic bread. The only complaint was that the garlic bread had been done in the microwave and was soggy. All in all a good place to visit and would recommend.

.I’ve been here a few times and it’s an old fashioned pub but nice enough. Food is really good and staff nice. I haven’t been in about a year, and after a trip to beamish we fancied a Sunday lunch. Got there, only to be told they don’t have high chairs? I had a 9 month old baby with me who needed feeding..I’m not talking milk. She’s weaned so eats actual food I.e. sharing my Sunday lunch. I was told we would have to use our car seat or buggy.I just can’t wrap my head around a pub in 2020 not having high chairs when even the smallest of independent cafes can offer one.As a result we had to re-pack the car and leave and went to the black horse. To add insult to injury they also have a park, so they obviously encourage families. Please consider Investing in some basic high chairs for your customers. We ended up spending £100 at black horse, which on the scale to a company isn’t much but could have been In there till instead.Like I said, such a shame. Sorry but felt necessary to comment to see if they’d consider catering to entire families.

We turned up to our table got seated and then got told we weren’t allowed Push chairs because of “social distancing “!! Do we have a car seat? Even if we had a car seat it would of had to sat right next to us anyway. We asked to change seats , move the tables along everything and they said we aren’t allowing push chairs at all. Absolute time wasters and was very rude!!!!!! Would not recommend .......

I know and fully understand that we are living in unprecedented times but the idea of the Government's eat out initiative, is to promote business. Whilst on the whole, it would appear to be doing so, you would like to see the respective businesses, actually welcoming customers back and being glad to see them. We got the distinct impression that it was an effort to endure the presence of patrons, after months of inactivity. We had a far better experience on our last visit. There is only one way in and out, causing a bottleneck and breaching social distancing rules. Customers were being allowed in without masks and indeed not all members of staff were wearing masks. The phone was constantly ringing and bookings were being turned away, hand over fist and often in a brusque manner, due to already being fully booked. Many of those potential extra customers will be put off from returning, if things ever get back to some sort of normal. Our food was perfectly acceptable and I am pleased our soft drinks were half price, as they would have been extortionate otherwise. One chap seemed to be very flustered and was rushing around like a headless chicken, with a look of panic on his face, akin to that of a Welsh sheep on a dark night.

My partner and I have just been to our local Shepherd and Shepherdess Restaurant this evening for a meal after lockdown restrictions have been lifted somewhat. It was lovely to be welcomed back by Ian, Lisa and the staff. The team have done a wonderful job in preparing the pub as a safe and welcoming venue as people make their tentative steps back to a new normal. As we all get used to sharing our social time together again albeit in a new way, it is lovely to know you can still enjoy excellent food and drinks but also feel safe sitting inside or out knowing that your health, safety and well being are their primary concern. We have all taken so much for granted in the past but it's so good to know you can still rely on this team's approach as we all face a new future together keeping safe. Thank you Shepherd and Shepherdess so much for all you have done ❤️ Allen and Paul x

The portions were huge especially the mixed grill, with this in mind you may think the quality was low but no tasted great too. The mixed grill was under a tenner, you just can't go wrong for that.

Always a pleasure to eat here. As I’m a severe anaphylactic and have multiple allergies the staff here always double check that I can eat what I order I can’t fault the management and their team

We visited for lunch just after our trip to Beamish as it's just around the corner. I was expecting an overpriced, over busy pub cashing in on the Beamish connection but was pleasantly surprised. The food was good value, especially the Two for... Menu, well cooked and good portion sizes. I had a pint of the Shepherd and Shepherdess ale which was great. The staff were friendly and service quick, I had the leek dumpling topped mince which I really enjoyed. If you're visiting Beamish and want more than the cafeteria food on site I'd definitely recommend a visit here.

Wow what a disappointing dinner that was beef I could have souled my shoes with. And veg that must have been in the pot since last weekend it was that soft, I was unsure if I should chew it outr suck it. Will not be making a return trip. Very very disappointing my friends are either easy pleased or the kitchen had an off day.

We'd heard good things about the food here so thought we'd call in. Absolutely fantastic and the portions are huge. The mixed grill was gigantic and cooked perfectly. Make sure you're hungry!! We will definitely be back.

There was no special menu as we were told they don’t do one during the school holidays. I opted for the mixed grill which was large however the quality was mediocre ‘nothing to write home about’ as the saying goes. The portions were large but quite expensive and everyone in our group left quite a bit as there was too much, would rather have paid less for a smaller portion and have had the option of paying the extra for the larger portion had I wanted it. Whilst walking through the restaurant I noticed a lot of people had left a lot of food on their plates so there was a lot of food wastage, paid for but not eaten.

Make sure you are hungry when you order their great food - even the children's portions are generous enough for most people! Good atmosphere, welcoming staff, and just outside the gate to Beamish Museum. Great place.

We went for dinner to find they don’t have there usual specials which is the reason we go lovely food at reasonable price. The service is perfect, nice park outside to play in, canny beer garden. Food always to die for never a complaint on that front

We called into The Shepherd & Shepherdess Inn for a drink whilst we waited to pick up our daughter and her boyfriend from Beamish Museum. We found a table inside as there was a plague of wasps around the outside tables. I went to the bar and ordered a pint of real ale for myself and a half pint of coke for my wife. I was then charged £6.30 for these two drinks!! I was very taken aback but had no option but to pay this exorbitant amount!! Obviously we shall not be revisiting this rip-off establishment and I strongly recommend that if you do, ask to see the drinks price list fbefore you order anything!!

Called in here the morning after we had been to a wedding in the area, only us an another couple were in about 930am. We ordered the breakfast which was fairly substantial, the larger breakfast included 8oz Cumberland sausage and an extra fried egg! Nicely cooked breakfast with fried bread, very tasty but probably no good calorie wise!

We called in for a very late lunch at around 15:45. There is outdoor seating but we chose to eat in the spacious and pleasant surroundings inside. There is a comprehensive menu that covers everything from Breakfast to Sunday Lunch. The choices are as mouthwatering as the end product on your table. I chose Mince and Dumplings, served with fresh vegetables and new potatoes. My wife opted for the pie of the day, which was Mince and Potato, served with veg and chips. Her mother had fish and chips with garden peas. We saw several people being served with enormous plates and ours was no exception. The plates were piping hot, the food well presented; lovely home cooking and tasty to eat. We had a large separate gravy boat and it wasn't a problem when we asked for some more. Poor Mother-in-Law was overwhelmed by the size of her fish and chips. The food was excellent and the service very attentive throughout. It was good to see the bar staff acknowledging the presence of people as they arrived at the bar. So often they are ignored in many places. It is a refreshing change to find a well run pub, with good staff and superb food. These qualities are frequently lacking in many of the chain run pubs. Looking forward to next time.

Went to visit Beamish but weather was so bad we didn't bother going in . However we called into this pub for food . I was expecting it to be quite expensive with it being so close to the museum but i was very pleasantly surprised. It was clean , the staff were lovely and very welcoming, the decor was spot on for the age of the building . The menu had lots of fantastic choices all very reasonable prices . We opted for 1 if the cheapest items which was the mixed grill . I was expecting a small plate but got the shock of my life when the meal appeared on a huge plate/tray . This was the biggest mixed grill I'd seen , it actually felt like an episode of man v food . Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted lovely . My husband couldn't manage the grill but still had a dessert of sticky toffee pudding with custard which he did manage to finish with a big smile on his face , he said it was perfect . I would definitely visit again and would definitely recommend to others

I hadn’t been here in years. Since I was a teenager in fact. We use to go all the time with my parents. Food was great. The mixed grill was huge for only £10. Will be back. Recommend.

Yet again, absolutely astounded by the size, quality and value of the mixed grill. I struggle to choose anything else from the menu. 20oz for £9.95. Simply incredible. Also left my power bar there and a member of staff rang me the next day to say they’d found it. If anyone knows of somewhere local that provides better service and value I’d eat my had if I wasn’t full of food.

I last reviewed this place in 2019 where my main issue was poor service and would you believe it things haven't changed. Service today was non existent. We were seated for over 10 minutes .... Not even a greeting. Front of house totally disorganised. It's a wonder the floor covering wasn't worn out because of the too-ing and fro-ing which never seemed to produce anything. This service is the worst I've experienced anywhere.. Cone on.... Get a grip !

Parking is plenty and is a one way system, so don't try to get to the front out of laziness or you could get stuck during busier times and end up having to go back out and round into the main dual carriage way and roundabout if there is too much traffic. The parking is free and it is a gravel car park . As you enter there is a sign to wait to be seated, but don't wait if there are plenty of seats, as you'll be there forever. I think the sign should be put away during quiet times and brought out in busier times. Once seated it's easy to order, choose what you want from the menu and go to the counter (remember what your table number is). Massive cake/sweet selection at the till area so I suggest having a look there as well for sure! At first glance £4(something) for a Melba is a bit much but then when you see the size of it, it's fair. Delicious too! They have take away boxes as well, yum! The last time I went I tried the hot beef bap and it was really good, no chewy, gristle or fatty bits in the meat at all. Spot on. Time before was the cheese pie which I absolutely loved (my lactose intolerant body however rejected it, but was still worth it and I'll do it again NGL). The majority of the staff are lovely, I've never felt anyone has been rude (even when they seemed to be having a crappy and busy day). Have been a few times now and definitely will go again. Edit: it's also (well behaved) dog friendly.

A hidden gem of a pub. We were recommended by a friend to seek out this place just off the main road between the Eden Arms Roundabout and Newton Aycliffe. Good friendly staff. Food was lovely .Little Jill had the Pie of the day, Chicken and Ham, I had the Gammon. Both were really lovely. The only gripe i had was the overflowing wall mounted cigarette bin at the main door it was unsightly and off putting to us non smokers. Maybe move it or empty it more often. Only a little gripe and will not put us off returning.
