Despite one of the photos, the Deli is no longer a sit-down eatery. It has a modest (but well chosen) selection of cheeses and other deli foods - all prepackaged, not portioned to order - plus a kitchen that makes hot and cold take-away foods. There are some reasonably nice breads, although not sliced. They will reheat their pizzas (etc.) to order. Which cooked foods they have at any given lunchtime seems a bit random. You might find (rather good) pizza one day, Spanish omelette another, and so on. You can usually rely on some kind of salad being available too. That's just one part of the Deli, though. The two other main parts have gourmet sweets, snacks and cooking ingredients, and housewares. But I need to address the elephant in the room, which always needs a big label. And on it is written: "PRICE!" EVERYTHING in the Deli is expensive. Don't even think of going in if you aren't comforably well off. It seems aimed at customers who would happily get their groceries in Fortnum & Mason, if it were not so inconveniently far away. A hot takeaway snack or salad will set you back £7-8. A confectionary bar, £5 or more. Homewares are firmly in the "Fancy Christmas gift" price bracket for most people. This is why they lose a point on the score. What they sell is excellent, but to my mind is (shall we say?) cheekily priced. Now, to be fair: if you want to pay Tesco prices, walk to Tesco, a short distance away. The Deli probably isn't for you. I just don't want someone to make a long trip, only to turn back when they see their lunch wouldn't be much less expensive if they ordered at a local restaurant. Having said all of this, one thing you'll never complain about at the Shelford Deli is service. The staff are uniformly lovely, and will go out of their way to help in any way they can. Arguably, this goes with the luxury bracket, but it's genuine, not forced, and very nice to see.

Visited a couple of days ago. Lots of nice packaged foods - pickles, oils etc. we had hoped for a range of artisan cheeses but were disappointed. Good range of veg especially tomatoes and aubergines. Lots of gifts but expensive. Bought some Benghali chicken. Tasty but expensive £12 for 375g. It really does have a wide range but there are other quality delis about. All said we probably would go back.

I cant lie, the almond croissants are the best ive ever had. Ive been going to the deli for around 6 years, i miss the jarvis sandwiches still to this day. However, the prices are getting ridiculous, almost making it unaffordable, i would love to shop organic and local but the veg and meat.... And cheese is so dear, its such a shame. I will however be back most weekends for my one treat... An almond croissant!

We were very surprised to discover that our local deli, which has recently opened on Friday evenings, now does not only great pizzas but also gluten free and vegan ones. We had a lovely evening there recently with family and friends. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the staff were friendly and attentive. We will be going back there - often, hopefully! Should add that it doesn’t stock all the deli food it used to. It is open as a cafe in the day and I have always found it welcoming but a tad expensive. Plus the menu seemed to stay the same for years and the gluten free cake they did was too sweet for my liking. BUT the pizzas were not more expensive than anywhere else and were MUCH NICER than most places. It’s the best GF pizza I have ever eaten, and I had some very good ones in Sicily!

This place clearly isn’t what it used to be. It’s not just a new menu, but a new attitude as well. You can tell that by the lack of customers and bored staff. However, how they are still open is really surprising. The coffees are served lukewarm, the ‘gourmet’ pizzas are inedible and the staff couldn’t care less. They really need to shut down so that something worthy of the lovely neighbourhood can replace this depressing space.

I appreciate having somewhere in Great Shelford to NZ drop in for a coffee, but I'm in two minds about this. There was nothing wrong with my Americano, a generous cup served with hot milk on the side. However the chocolate and raspberry brownie was solid and heavy, rather than crispy on the outside and moist within as a brownie should be. Also a couple of pounds more than I would expect to pay at other coffee shops in the area.

The deli now appears to be taking second place to a full meal service. I popped in for a coffee and a snack lunch and was surprised at the limited choice available. The menu appears to have changed recently and now offers a selection of full meals rather than light lunches - such as a slice of quiche etc. That said both the coffee and cake I had were very good but not what I went in for based on previous visits.. Parking is available in the nearby car park and there is both indoor and outdoor seating.

I went for lunch with 3 members of the same family. The menu was mainly pizza type dishes and a few other meals all under the 'salad' umbrella. A little pricy I thought, but, in Cambridge that is sort of expected. What put me off was a salad on the menu not being something for eating in the café. A Greek salad was requested by one of the party. A box was served. No plate, but a take-away box. A plate was requested but a we were told that this item was only for take aways, and was not to be eaten in the café, unless extra money was paid. Why was a take-away item on the café menu?? Get your act together deli people! A menu usually shows the items for eating in, not for taking away. The food was quite good, but not really worth the prices paid Disappointing

Firstly, the place is crazy overpriced. They have all manner of reasons for this, but the empty restaurant and disgruntled staff certainly speak for themselves. The food is mediocre at best, and no matter how ethical sourced the produce is....is tastes pretty ordinary. You order at the till and pay. No problem with that. However, this means that despite complaining about our lukewarm coffees, nothing was done and no apology given. They have our money by this point, no clearly they don’t care about quality. I visited with a pregnant friend who asked if the cheese used was pasteurised, the lady cook in the kitchen was too busy to respond. However, the waitress did try to ask. The pizza that eventually arrived was dry as board with a minuscule array of over crisped/burned toppings. By this time, there really was little point in complaining as even the one pleasant member of staff had disappeared.

I recommended this to a friend as I ate here at the end of last summer and was looking forward to doing so more times this summer. I was shocked at how much the place had changed...and not for the better. On my last visit they had a good selection of salads which were delicious and fairly priced. This occasion could not have been more of a contrast. There was no sign of salads or food visible and no menu board to choose from. We didn't get sight of the menu until we got to the head of the queue. Also the adjoining high-quality food shop had disappeared and become just one fridge in what was now a side seating area of the cafe. In the end we took the menu away and sat down to choose before queuing again. Most of the menu is now pizzas, mostly in the £13-£15 range which is very expensive for a village cafe. I spotted a 'seasonal salad', based on beans, in the fridge for £4.50 which was just what I wanted and similar to what I'd had last time. My friend chose a salad off the menu and we went to order. I pointed out that I would like to eat my salad in so was happy to pay VAT and a cover/plate charge. I was told that would then be £11.95. "£4.50 to £11.95 for eating in?" I queried while pointing out that I was unable to eat a large portion so the salad I'd chosen would be great as clearly an £11.95 version was going to be huge. I was then told that it was only the same size salad and with some lettuce added but that they had to charge me £11.95 to eat in. I tried discussing this further but was just abruptly told that it was £11.95 or not if I wanted that salad. Having dragged my friend a long way to meet here I didn't feel able to leave so easily but wished I had. In the end we shared a pizza which was £13.45. It was a nice pizza but I have no intention of returning here ever again. How sad that a seemingly successful business can change so rapidly to such a poor one. Even soup of the day (the cheapest item on the menu) is £7.95. This is a village in Cambridgeshire, not the centre of London. Although I've eaten much better food for a lot less even in the centre of London.

This was our first time here and was a little confusing which entrance to go into. Partly complicated by some pushchairs outside and picnic table which partially blocked the entrance. (There is a space for pushchairs to go, however it was full and appreciate this is out of their control. However, if someone needed extra assistance, it is cramped once you get in and you would've had to move other people's things) The look and decor is really tastefully done, has a feel of shabby chic vibe and a baby blue accent colour which is really nice. It is flooded with natural light and has plants tastefully accenting the space. The seating area is quite crowded and could do with one less table. Toilets were clean. They was a steady flow of local and regular customers - which is always nice to see. There was a wide range of ages and the staff were very friendly and efficient. They don't open tabs, so that was slightly frustrating as we wanted to order some coffees and then get some cakes a bit later - but not really a big deal as I just paid twice. Would be more customer friendly if tabs could be opened. Went outside to check the outdoor seating area to the rear and was disappointing. Looked like the place where the old furniture is just dumped. It is spring and on a nice day people will want to sit outside. There was a Wendy House for the children to play in (nice touch). However, looks like all the thought for decor and ambience went on the indoors. We had coffees, one was soy (soy & oat options available - great!) and cakes, one was a carrot cake. With the carrot cake, I don't recall the card describing it stating that the frosting was cream cheese based. If we had seen that, we would not have ordered it. The cake itself was light and tasty, but not keen on cream cheese.

I live locally and am a loyal customer to the deli but was very disappointed when visiting recently with my 6 month old baby. A member of staff very abruptly told us to move our prams outside to the buggy park - this despite 2 of the babies being asleep in them and us moving chairs etc to make sure they did not block any walkways. I was happy to love mine as baby was awake but didn’t appreciate the manner in which we were told to do so which was bordering on rude. As a first time mum it didn’t make me feel very comfortable. I know a lot of mums and babies visit the deli regularly and it would be great if staff were more accommodating.

When working in this village my colleagues and I were looking for somewhere to sit down and eat a meal. We decided to give this bistro a try despite its very pretentious appearance - the chalkboard outside stated, amongst other claims, that here within was ‘food with a purpose’. I may have missed something but I have always understood that all food had a purpose. Unfortunately the food on offer within did not serve our purpose, that of sustaining us through the day working outside in sub-zero temperatures. ‘Artisan’ means ‘smashed avocado’ and other trendy treats as opposed to anything substantial. The offerings were all rather expensive in my view, on a par with Central London prices. Not what I expected in this sleepy little village.

We've lived in Great Shelford for 5 years and have eaten/shopped at this Deli countless times. We always used to enjoy our visits and were happy to pay a bit extra for good quality food. Sadly, I completely agree with other reviews that suggest the new menu now seems geared towards generating excessive profit at the expense of customer satisfaction. There was plenty of space, including a large garden and a semi covered open barn area with seating. It has a lovely, relaxed, home for home atmosphere about it and the coffee is fantastic (Monmouth Coffee company). I haven’t tried any food yet, but judging from my companions' comments, I got the impression it was also very good and I will definitely be returning soon to sample a full lunch. We never stayed in for lunch although I fancied the options they had on the board, everything seems to be prepared with fresh high quality ingredients which makes it a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it. They also have a good selection of Italian specialty pasta and homemade cakes that look delicious. A lovely spot for lunch and I frequently pop in for takeaway coffee (okay and cake!) as the coffee is delicious. The takeaway lunch options are also great, and I go out of my way to get lunch here.

Coming to Shelford on a very cold day (it was 1°) we knew there must be a cafe for tea and cakes and all things yummy. My faith was rewarded on discovering the deli and on arrival my heart gladdened on opening the door and seeing a lovely open light space with big rafters, velux windows and twinkly lights. My yippy feelings spilled forth surveying a delightful scene of shelves laden with goodies. Yes we had fallen upon good times, or so I thought. My glee became a bit more muted on encountering the tall young man on duty behind the counter. Well he looked as he might be on sentry duty, and not too impressed by me and my partner. I reckon it was down to us being hoodies, he clearly hadn't got the message that we should be hugged metaphorically if not actually. Disappointment began to sweep in. However we rallied ourselves and ordered tea and Bakewell tarts. Well not cheap obviously but reasonable at a tad under £11 I think, or so we initially thought.

I have visited this establishment on a number of occasions most recently for my husband’s 40th birthday. This place is a real gem and our community are very lucky to have it. Delicious freshly prepared dishes, responsibly sourced ingredients, knowledgeable staff, great service and lovely atmosphere. I am never disappointed and in reference to the previous review , never confused ! The best restaurant in the world may have gone to Yorkshire but the best deli in the world definitely goes to Shelford !!! Well done Team Deli. You do an amazing job.

By chance passed by with a colleague and saw a busy deli so called in, nice vibrant environment upon entry but instantly met by a confused state. Did I order, pick up a plate, queue, pray, not sure? yes there was a sign to say what to do but I just felt a little bewildered -sorry.

Visité aquí hace un mes. Tiene un encantador ambiente bien iluminado para un café con una cantidad razonable de descanso. Pedí dos cafés con leche y una porción de almendra y frambuesa, que eran de gran calidad pero muy caro a más de £9! No...

Directora grosero. Diabólica. No volver

Iv been here a few times now and really love it. The food is gorgeous even though it is a bit pricey. I would definitely recommend. Very tasty freshly cooked food. Take away also possible.

This wasn't the first time I'd eaten at the Shelford Deli and it won't be the last. The food is all cooked on the premises and the owner, Drew, tries to find fresh local and mainly organic suppliers. In the past I've eaten the delicious soup of the day - always quirky and interesting - and the splendid frittata but on this visit I went for the meat pizza - ham, sundried tomatoes and a fairly strong cheese. Because I ate in, you can can take any of the dishes away if you wish, it came with a well dressed salad on the side. The dish of the day looked terrific but I held back as I know from previous experience that the portions are generous. The staff are young but know their stuff and can either answer questions like 'Is this gluten free?' or will take the time to check in the kitchen. I've always found that the service is good although you can expect to queue during the lunchtime rush as local office workers collect their lunch. You also need to expect to share a table if they are really busy although if the weather's good there is overspill space in the pretty garden at the back. Be aware that this is casual eating - no reservations and regulars take the time to clear their plates when they've finished. The Deli closes at around 4:30 pm by which time most of the amazing cakes will have disappeared but it does open early enough for breakfast and serves an excellent almond croissant to go with a good cup of coffee. Don't expect a cheap lunch here but do expect to enjoy yourself. And on a final note, it's clean! The toilets are always spotless - my acid test.

Really enjoyed the food, staff could do with smiling a bit more, but they were efficient.

Menu somewhat limited but food was lovely. It was very busy and lots of people talking inside was inevitably loud; however, this was made unbearable by the rock music blasting out from the speakers. When we mentioned it to a staff member she wasn't interested. We would have stayed for cake but as it was couldn't bear the noise any longer.
