We were staying at Bowood for a birthday treat and had dinner and breakfast in the Shellburne Restaurant and found Rotherhithe dinner to be more than I anticipated. Simply put it was one of the best meals we have ever had. The food was outstanding, I had the Cornish crab and my wife the lamb croquet which were fantastic, a cleaned plate was testament to that. It was followed up by the beef which was cooked to perfection and a delightfully tasting Diane sauce. My wife had the pork belly, yes, cleaned plates again. To finish I had the tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream. It truly was a lovely dessert, not sweet at all. My wife had the bread and butter pudding with honeycomb ice cream, again, not sweet. Service started a little slow but they were full. Wine was good, the house red really was a great choice. Great cocktails to start. Overall a fantastic visit, would highly recommend.

Met friends for a pre-booked afternoon tea, lovely to see friends, but the tea was boring. They had not remembered the allergies, refills of tea and even water were not forthcoming. Nothing special about the food- fairly colourless..a strawberry would have helped. Sandwiches the usual..ham chicken, eggg and cheese. Scones were dry and crumbly, although with plenty of jam and cream, even though the jam tasted burnt! Cokes were as tasteless as they were colourless. Macaroon was soggy. Actually an unpleasant meal in attractive surroundings. I won’t be trying another meal there,. Sorry

I had Sunday lunch here with a group of friends. The food and service were very good but I was disappointed with the main course: I ordered Vegan nut roast Wellington in Madeira sauce but when the plate came there was no puff pastry enclosing the nut roast. The waitress said that the word Wellington did not mean that the dish was something wrapped in puff pastry, but having discussed this with several friends and having looked at Google to, the recipe Wellington means encased in puff pastry. The food was well cooked and delicious but something was definitely missing.

We booked Sunday lunch as we were staying at the hotel. We were seated by Rowan, who gave us a choice of table. The food was excellent, especially the roast beef, and there was just the right amount of time between courses. Fantastic value for money, three courses £35/person. Would highly recommend a visit here, in fact we're planning to return for lunch over the Easter weekend.

We visited for Sunday lunch, arriving early, and were seated in restaurant at 12 midday. No other tables were taken at this time. We ordered our food, quite a long wait for our starters to arrive, when they did they forgot to bring one, a child’s starter of melon, as there were no other customers & about 6 staff milling about we were surprised that we had to ask for the meal to be bought out. The beef main course was virtually inedible, about 75% fat & gristle. We noticed a lot of other tables complaining about it as well. They did knock £10 off the bill! The service was incredibly slow. Very poor experience, we won’t be returning.

Great venue, location. Dishes were varied, both our starters were small, tasteless and tepid. Staff obviously weren’t trained for this level of dining. Which is a real shame as we will now think twice about retuning, whereas it should be an absolute treat.

This restaurant is in a lovely setting for a special occasion and the food was well presented, different from the run of the mill and tasted really good. Don’t go here if you like big portions though. The service however was awful. We went for lunch as a small group. It wasn’t particularly busy. No one came to take our drinks order and a long wait to order. Items forgotten and bill was totally incorrect. It’s been mentioned many times in these reviews about the apparent lack of training in basic customer service and attitude of staff and sad to say this still hasn’t been addressed despite token apologies from the guest manager.

Whilst a beautiful venue in the heart of the countryside and a lovely restaurant- it was seriously let down by poor customer service. The staff are completely disinterested and behave like they would rather be somewhere else or just don’t know what customer service means. The afternoon tea was ok, I’ve certainly had better, but thankfully one of the staff recognised that we were waiting a long time (even though I had already asked 2 other staff) and came to apologise and offered complimentary drinks. This could be lovely if staff were better trained

As far as the location, decor and views go, this place gets 5/5, so the food and service should have equally high scores. Sadly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Service was slow and inconsistent, mains arrived 15 minutes apart so half of the party had finished by the time the other half’s food eventually arrived. Beef was fatty and veg cold. No apologies for the delays or shoddy service. We complained and ended up with the food being taken off the bill. Such a shame as the ups place could be so special. We won’t be back.

We had a throughly pleasant meal at the Bowood Hotel, the highlight of which was the excellent food. The menu is varied with a wide choice of options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike, including the puddings. Everything was quite light in style and the portions were sensible sizes, allowing us to enjoy three courses without feeling too full. The only negative was the service, which was a bit hit and miss in terms of checking on us through the meal for additional drinks etc, and we had to ask for some orders a couple of times.

Last Saturday I took three ladies to Bowood for Afternoon Tea. This was a small bridal shower for my step-son's fiance. I advised them before we went that one of the party was Type 1 diabetic. I didn't realise that another of the party was gluten free so I told the waiter when we arrived. Our diabetic member was served the same tea as me - full of cakes, scones and jam. She asked for more smoked salmon sandwiches since she couldn't eat much else - she was brought another selection. So I gave her my mine. Our GF member was also brought the same tea as me, (maybe they thought we wouldn't notice?!) so we had to ask if she could have GF instead. After a long wait, all the kitchen could rustle up was a few sandwiches... and for some reason thought that GF people must be vegetarian too. Seems a beetroot sandwich is what someone who is GF should be eating! We gave up at that point. Seems strange to me that in this day and age of food intolerences, etc, the kitchen couldn't even produce a GF cake for her. So not wanting to cause a further scene on the day I waited and wrote to complain on Tuesday. The reply I got had overlooked the bulk of my email, and she didn't even get my name right. It was very insulting. I would not recommend this place - this car-crash of an afternoon tea cost me £121. I was offered a free glass of prosecco ''should we ever return'' though :-) Not likely.

First time we have been to the restaurant despite only living a couple of miles away. Our daughter gave us a “meal for two” gift voucher for Xmas present and it proved to be a good idea. Restaurant was due to be busy so we took an early sitting which worked out fine. Food was good ( corned beef, lamb rissole starters and we both had duck confit mains). No dessert but we had coffee and brandy in bar whilst waiting for taxi ( left car at hotel and walked back to collect the following day). Service and staff good, the only glitch being a missed pre- dinner drinks order due to communication error. Not a place for “cheap eats” (we spent double the gift voucher value, as expected as drinks not covered by voucher and we like decent wine!) but very nice for special occasions.

We stayed at the Hotel for 3 nights and dined here once. Not a great experience - why? Well the food is not great and service apart from the excellent Mario needs improving. Wines came and small amount was poured in my glass I thought for tasting/checking but the waiter immediately poured it round. This happened with the white starter wine and the red that followed. My food was the hake starter which was too bland and lacked freshness; was it made well in advance and heated up I wonder? The pork main was ok if steeply priced but the siode or of cabbage was unspeakable! It was a chunk of cabbage that looked seared and was complete/whole. We aimed at sharing the sides and no one could cut the cabbage properly. My dessert was poor too. Portion size was small so not rigth for hearty eaters. Breakfasts were poor too. A server on the first day was rude when telling us they had no orange juice! 30 minutes later she was serving juice to another table. Mario bought us some at the end of the meal! My wife asked for bacon and tomato. She received one small half tomato and one rasher of bacon. We ate all remaining evening meals out locally and they were excellent. The Hotel is very nice and needs this to raise its game.

We went to the Shelburne Restaurant late February 2022 for lunch to celebrate a family birthday. My husband had had a good meal there and was keen to go back. We had a dreadful experience. I am writing this review now because we complained on the day, and have waited 8 weeks now for the general manager to call us (as we were promised by the duty manager he would), but he never did. I appreciate that this review may be out of kilter with others, and we may simply have been unlucky - or things may recently have improved. We ordered champagne at the bar, but we had to chase it up more than once before it ultimately arrived after a long delay. Despite the fact that there were only a few tables occupied, all of the restaurant staff appeared to avoid eye contact, and it took ages to place our order, or receive our food. There was a lack of knowledge of what was even on the menu. After our main courses, we waited 20 minutes or so for our table to be cleared - but the staff simply walked past us until I ended up clearing the table, taking our plates back to the pass myself. Even that elicited no response from the staff or manager. No-one pro-actively came to offer us anything (e.g. desserts or coffee). The meal took forever as a result of the bad service; so much so, that afternoon tea was well underway by the time we finished. We enjoy a leisurely lunch as much as the next person, but the delay in this case was extraordinary and not down to us or our choice. When the bill came, my husband pointed out that it was missing the champagne we'd had at the beginning - at which point the restaurant manager told him (sullenly) that he did not check the bills (but did not think to say thank you). My husband complained to the restaurant manager on the day (who - only at the insistence of my husband - eventually and reluctantly made a discount on our bill), and I complained to the reception desk who called down the duty manager. I explained our experience (on the basis that if something is that bad, the management really need to know), and she appeared sympathetic. The manager was in a meeting, apparently, but we left our phone number and he would call us back. Needless to say, we have not received a call. On the plus side, the food was generally ok (not delicious, or excellent) when it finally arrived. But never have I experienced such lamentable service. It was a memorable meal, but for all the wrong reasons.

Have been there two times, A Sunday and a Saturday, the Sunday visit the toast was nice, but we found hair in the food twice and the service was slow, we notice the chef was not shaved and none of the chefs had face masks, during covid this is not a good idea. The Saturday visit was with friends, the menu was completely different and not a good choice, mostly sandwiches and they were so small and overpriced, the hot food felt preheated or was pink inside (chicken) and had to be returned. How can a place like this be so poor, I don’t mind paying for good service and good food, but this place failed in both, please change!

The restaurant was clean and well presented, the staff were friendly, helpful and polite. They made an effort and checked dietary requirements and allergies and the food was delivered quickly. What arrived at the table made for an indulgent and sweet feast. The quality of the food was superb, especially the homemade cakes and scones. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a little treat in special surroundings. We sat outside and enjoyed the views, sunshine and watching the pied wagtails. The only thing that would have improved the experience would be a little more cream with the scones. Otherwise a topnotch offering.

Valentine's Day dinner at Bowood's Shelburne Restaurant was a last-minute choice for us, having booked only 48 hours in advance. Living nearby for the past five years, but never having tried it, we wondered why our local friends and neighbours seldom mention having visited The Shelburne. Not much buzz in the neighbourhood. Let me reassure you, the food is expertly prepared to a high standard, almost five star. The dining room is a handsome affair, tastefully decorated and elegant, situated adjacent the lobby of the hotel of the hotel at Bowood. The grounds and overall ambience are classically quiet and calming. The lamb dish, involving several different cuts (even sweetbreads) and preparations all on the same plate was fit for the fussiest of foodies, and very filling. And the wine list is well rounded and reasonably priced, if slightly limited compared with other nearby restaurants of this calibre. The only area in need of some improvement is the training and development of the service staff. All very pleasant and eager to please, they lack detailed knowledge of the food and drinks menu, and needed to check with the kitchen and/or bar before answering even the most basic of questions. Not a fault of the team themselves, just a hint for the management....We will definitely return again soon, and look forward to seeing how this restaurant moves forward. With a few tweaks, this could become a very popular choice indeed.

The Bowood hotel is a beautiful hotel with excellent service that blends the new and the old to deliver a pleasant experience, however it is let down by the food which was at best average. Portions were tiny for the roast dinner which was either to save money (probably not), or to make the food look well presented on the plates (probably the case). Two sprouts and two Chantilly carrots and three small roast potatoes may look nice arranged on lovely plates, but do not constitute a proper roast dinner. The quality was ok, but a Toby Carvery would fare just as well. The same could be said of the “cheese board” which was more of a “cheese splinter”. It is such a shame such a lovely place is let down by such average, meagre cuisine.

My wife's deal involved a two-course prix fixe menu and I accepted that and thought that the value and quality were really very good. We'd been told this was a good restaurant, so decided to pop in for some lunch before visiting Bowood House next door. We were the only people in the restaurant, and were seated at a table that had a few ring-marks from drinks previous. We were handed a couple of menus, and offered some water - so I asked for some tap water that turned up in a glass bottle with chipped rim. I couldn't understand why my wife said the menu was uninspiring - until we found out she'd been handed the lunchtime menu and I had been given the evening menu... Unfortunately my menu was hastily retrieved and I too was handed an uninspiring lunch menu. No real meals on offer, just a selection of sandwiches/wraps, a burger, or fish and chips, or ?? . Once we'd asked for the wine menu, we were able to order a couple of glasses [which came from un-vacuumed bottles] . Mine was ok, but my wife's glass had remnants of lipstick mouth marks round one side. Worse, when she got to the bottom, the last mouthful was large lumps of sediment from the bottle. The food lacked finesse - my £11 club sandwich was made with supermarket bread and was quite a monstrosity - the chunky chicken was brown at the edges where dried out. The vinegar my wife wanted on her fries arrived in a nearly empty glass dispenser that allowed us to see quite how cloudy it was. At no point during our meal were we table-checked - and just had the amusement of the young staff giggling away to their new ring-tone. Whilst the menu for the evening looked like it might be worth a return trip - I'd not bother with lunch again.

As a family we have had mothers day lunch every year for the past 6 years at the Shelburne Restaurant but yesterdays was an absolute disaster. The service was appalling 3 hours to have an haphazard 3 course set lunch, the staff did not know what they were doing they were walking round with plates of food not knowing which table to serve it to. The starters were cold and all plated up so why it took so long I don't know. They had taken our wine order in the bar but it wasn't available once we entered the dining area and then I was told to go to the bar and order another bottle, never have I been in a hotel dining room and had to go to the bar to make a choice, the wine menu is usually brought to the table, terrible service trying to get drinks throughout the meal. The waitresses couldn't tell the difference between the lamb and the beef on the plates when they were trying to serve and the lamb was obvious as it was just large chunks of fat. My main meal was put in front of me and then table away and served to man 2 tables away. The table wasn't served all at once meaning those that were served first had to start their meal and were nearly finished before other were served there, this happened with the main course and the desert, the whole thing was a disaster. We were the first table to sit down for dinner yesterday and could see as the 3 hours dragged on that it was worse than faulty towers. Some of our deserts were serviced to another table before being given to us and then we had to wait an age before the rest of our table were served. We didn't bother with coffee to finish the meal as we were desperate to get out of the place and made my views known of our experience to the only gentlemen serving who got our bill for us but he wasn't concerned I had the feeling from him that this was a normal experience of dining there even though I said to him if a service charge was now being added to our bill he would need to deduct it from our bill, unfortunately there was no service charge to deduct so all we could do was not leave any tip at all. Speaking to another couple who had afternoon tea as we departed, the lounge service they experienced was just as bad. We won't be returning as the chaos of this dining experience didn't make for a nice relaxing family occasion in fact totally the opposite it was just an expensive mistake after all these years.

Very unhappy with the food, dry starters, no garlic or butter on garlic butter prawns, raw steak, raw carrots, cold sticky toffee pudding. We were given a bottle of champagne to make up for this but I want to help others avoid having the same experience as us, what a disappointment. The best thing on the menu is the chips! Plus the hot (or lukewarm) breakfast was also poor. Shame the chefs don't care about what they serve.

A group of business people including myself enjoyed a very pleasant meal in superb surroundings in the Shelburne Restaurant at the Bowood Hotel. The service was very attentive and all the food was beautifully presented. The ambiance was exceptional and far better than most other local restaurants. The meals were not cheap but the quality of the food makes the restaurant good value for money.

Had Sunday Lunch with friends today. The service was dire. Waited ages to be served, and then the waiter started clearing the plates when one of our party was still eating! The sticky toffee pudding was tough, I think due to being microwaved to death.

Mark the manager was fantastic, really good genuine guy who cared about his clients. The chef however could have been from a vegan campaign group as we all ordered medium rare steaks and all of them came out as rare! I think putting the steak in a toaster could have done a better job of cooking them. It's a shame as the hotel setting is great, shame the chef spoils what could be a good experience!

We have been regular visitors to Bowood Hotel and have always felt that the Shelburne was its Achilles Heel. That has changed dramatically with the arrival of Ed as Head Chef. The standard of the food has improved significantly and we have had the best meals that we have eaten here in the last five years. Service in the restaurant has always been good but Justyna has raised it to a highly professional level. Dining at the Sheburne has become both memorable and very enjoyable. It deserves to become better recognised and discovered.

lovely restaurant with a good choice of varied and unusual foods, great to try a new dish and enjoy it. The only minor niggle was that we were forgotten after having starters, we did ask twice if our main course was on the way, however other diners had completed 3 courses and we still waited, it was wonderful when it did arrive, but there was no apology and that was a bit upsetting.

We booked and went to the Sunday lunch carvery for Mother's Day. We live local and over the years we have gone there several times throughout the year to the Sunday lunch carvery that used to be in the Kerry Suite. This time we were in the Shelburne Restaurant. The service and the food was always excellent previously at Bowood. In fact, it used to be so impressive that we started to book the Kerry suite for private family functions like major birthdays, sometimes with as many as 30 or 40 guests attending for lunch. Our visit this Sunday was very disappointing. The bottom line is, whoever is in charge of the restaurant needs to be sacked. The starters that came out looked like they had been thrown onto the plate. The accompanying salad was so pitiful it just cried out that whoever was preparing the food in the kitchen did not have any pride in their work. It was a few shriveled up rocket leaves that looked like they had been left out of the plastic bag all night and then flicked onto a plate. How could anybody who would knowingly let this go out of a professional kitchen have any pride in their work? This goes not just for the person who prepared the food/ plates but also to the manager and any waiting staff who would serve it. The carvery itself was also very disappointing, the accompaniments to the meat were very limited but worst of all they were cold. Cold cabbage and cold broccoli are not nice and disappointingly, they far outweighed the good quality of the meat. To top it off, one of the chefs (I wouldn't be surprised if it was the one who had "flicked" wilted salad onto our starters) was stood gawping out over the restaurant through a hatch from the kitchen with his hand up against his face and his fingers in his mouth. When I asked one of the servers to ask him to remove his hand and fingers away from his mouth he pulled a face and walked off without washing his hands or showing any remorse at whatsoever. Totally disgusting and completely unprofessional. The deserts on offer didn't do much to redeem the disappointment experienced so far. Three choices of what seemed like different flavoured creams in square plastic containers about the size of an egg cup. I counted about 8 waiters/waitresses and 3 or 4 staff in the kitchen. Not once did anybody come up to us and ask if everything was OK....If they had of done, we would have told them NO IT WASN'T! How could so many professional staff get something so simple, so wrong? Whoever the manager of this restaurant is, he or she obviously hasn't got a clue what they are doing and have spoiled the great memories we had of this once, wonderful place to eat. Answer - get rid of them and start again - FROM THE TOP DOWN!

This was a large group meal celebrating two family birthdays. The quality of the food was good but not great and the portions were erratic! The salmon starter was a joke, one roulette about the size of a £2 coin, whilst the pate and toast was great. The main meals were fine, but debatable whether it was value for money. Service was good to start, but towards the end of the meal most of the staff seemed to disappear?? We were virtually left to fend for ourselves. This should be a fabulous experience considering the location and cost, it misses leaving you feeling short changed .....

We were celebrating a special occasion - a family wedding the following day - and Bowood seemed a fitting choice as many of us are local to the area but I'm afraid we won't be recommending the restaurant to family and friends. The overwhelming feeling was that it would have been perfectly acceptable it it were £10 cheaper in a pub. The two vegetarians in our group had two very unimaginative options to choose from :risotto and goats cheese salad. The salad was tiny, and I could have placed it in a bowl better myself. The other food was either too dry or too rich or just plain boring. The food did not fit the bill and the atmosphere was stuffy to say the least.

We came here for a mid christmas golf break, having been several times before we had high expectations. The location and decor of the hotel and restaurant is really lovely. However this time, the meal was really let down by inept service. Our cocktail order was completely forgotten - twice! And having hovered over us in the bar to get us to move to our table we were then left for ages waiting for a wine list and had to ask for that twice as well. When the wine finally appeared the sommelier couldn't open it - he said 'this corkscrew is rubbish' and then broke the cork. This level of service would be irritating in a roadside cafe but when you are paying £60 per head its very disappointing. I can only guess that they had on a temporary staff between Xmas and new year. Something has gone wrong with this restaurant and it lets down the rest of the experience at Bowood. Hopefully they will sort this out as this is one of our favourite places!

We have just had Christmas Lunch at the Shelburne Restaurant. The restaurant was decorated beautifully. We were greeted and let to our table for champagne and canapés. We ordered our meal and from there on it was totally downhill. The starter was average. For the main meal, I had turkey. On my plate were two slices of turkey which were fine, three under cooked sprouts, three small chips of potato that had been dipped in fat but were definitely not roasted, carrot batons that looked as though they had come from Tescos and one stuffing ball. The Christmas pudding felt as though it had been left in the microwave for too long it was hard around the edges and inedible, served with ice cream. This was definitely not Gourmet Dining as advertised. I could easily have been in Butlins Holiday camp.

My wine-tasting circle decided to push the boat out for our annual Christmas party. I really wish we hadn't. We kicked off with cocktails. The request for a Dry Martini with a twist yielded a warm single measure of Dry Martini Vermouth. The Salmon and prawn starter with Marie Rose sauce came with absolutely no prawns. An enquiry was met with "Well you've got some prawn sauce."The beef main course was Luke warm and the portion of carrot purée was precisely half a teaspoon. Now to the puddings: all were bought in. The individual Christmas puddings were served cold and the staff had never heard of brandy butter. The plum frangipani tart was dry, the accompanying vanilla custard was a dried-on smear. There was a feeling that the chefs thought such a formulaic party menu was beneath them so decided not to bother at all. By the time our pudding was served there was not a single person visible in the open kitchen. The serving staff were so embarrassed that we only had to pay for our after dinner drinks.Bowood struggles to get locals to dine there - no wonder. Eight of us certainly won't go there again.

We visited the restaurant with our small son for a relaxed sunday lunch.Food: 3 courses for £22.50 (£19.50 2 courses) good value for the quality and amount of food. Starters included creamed goats cheese and candied beetroot-delicate dish full of interesting flavours. Mains selection of roasts and fish dishes. Desserts with apple and cinnamon delice with coulis; chocolate brownie with homemade marshmallows. The food has consistently been excellent quality at the Shelburne restaurant.Atmosphere: the restaurant was surprisingly quiet for a sunday lunch service (the marketing team need to do more promoting!). It was relaxed and pleasant to see the views of the bowood grounds.Service: the staff were attentive and approachable. I visited the restaurant recently for Sunday lunch to celebrate my Parents Wedding Anniversary. The location is really good as the hotel grounds are quite extensive and picturesque. Also, the decor in the restaurant and bar area is of a high standard. With that in mind, the expectation of good service was there but was unfortunately not the case. The service was poor and very slow. The waitresses had simply not been trained enough to do a proper job. One example was the offering of bread rolls. Although there was a choice, the waitress just put one on each plate, not asking which one we would like. She did this by using a large spoon and then her thumb on top of the roll! Hardly silver service. They had almost run out of beef as it had been sold in the Brasserie next door so there was not enough for the amount of people who wanted it in our party. We complained in the end to the Duty Manager and the bill was reduced by 50%. Unfortunately, this experience has put us off going again. There are plenty more good restaurants around that offer a much better service. This is a shame though as the food was very good.

I visited bowood restaurant last night with my husband and his parents to celebrate my husbands birthday. We were all looking forward to the evening and had a lovely night but that was mainly due to the company. We were given the new wine list on arrival but then were given a list of wines from the menu they didn't have! The wait to get the food menu was at least 15 mins! Our starters arrived and they were tiny and not exactly cheap! I ordered beef flank for main cooked rare with a warm potato salad, the beef was not rare it's was medium and even worse was the fact my potato salad was a medley of raw potatoes! For pudding my mother in law ordered chocolate fondant, mmmmm gooey chocolate I hear you say?! No it's was not in the least bit gooey it's was a chocolate sponge! Very disappointing! At least we had the apologises of the supervisor Elora. She dealt with all our complaints in a courteous and professional manner and it's was down to her our evening was not completely ruined so to her I say thank you but to the chef and management I'd say sort it out because for a four star hotel it's not really good enough!

Stayed the night at attached hotel as part of a relaxing spa weekend and we decided to eat at the restaurant. Ambience is lovely - lots of candles and goes for a romantic theme - although this was destroyed with kids at an adjacent table playing with their iPad tablets shining bright light everywhere.Had hoped that staff might have asked the parents to turn off their children's iPads, but head of waiting team described kids waving their iPads at the table as well behaved. Some waiting staff fail to understand that the restaurant tries for a romantic sophisticated image rather than a restaurant for kids.Food has an emphasis around nouvelle cuisine. Starter and main course flavour was excellent although portions are not particularly large. Fell down badly on dessert - chocolate fondant is meant to be gooey on the inside, not the same as dry sponge. Mentioned this to waitress whose only response was that it would be passed onto the chef, but did not bother to say sorry we had been disappointed.Felt that waiting staff are encouraged to push alcohol fairly hard to customers, but a 'no thank you' sufficed to end further pushing. The restaurant at its core is good - just needs a little more work on consistency.

Couldn't help but be impressed by the facilities and surroundings on offer here, so not living too far away we thought we'd treat ourselves to a nice sunday lunch. I really should have read the comments on here first, as I concur!I had completely forgotten it was father's day when I booked, so the restaurant was busy and nosy with a few wingeing, disruptive kids near us, so that didn't help. Staff and management seemed to be stressed; half-hearted smiles, strained talk between them. We both had lamb, and was asked if we wanted sauce, well 'mint, of course' we said. For some reason the waitress looked surprised! We returned the expression when she said they hadn't got any!! Is it me? How can a good hotel do a sunday lunch with lamb on the menu, and not have any mint sauce???? Anyway, the meal was pretty bland and luke warm, I asked for some HOT gravy, as there was hardly any on the plate, and we were spoiled with around 2 fl oz of warm 'jus' - not gravy in my book! The £8-odd for a 250ml glass of chilean red - the size and cost of which was not listed on the menu - really tipped the balance. We left hungry, and wound-up with the noise and disruption, and agreed that I, or our local pub could offer a lot more, for a lot less, and a LOT tastier, so we won't be back - the nice view of the golf course just isn't worth the extra. What a shame, it looks a nice place.
