Had the worst experience at this place. Was made very uncomfortable by making racist comments about my country India. Can’t believe a shop owner would behave like this with a paying customer. Owner said some very negative things about our prime minister Mr. Narendra Modi. And to make us more comfortable disturbing and very misinformed news was put on the speaker while we were waiting for our food.

Whenever I'm in Birmingham this is my go to place for seekh kebabs, pakora etc. Still the best katlamas I've had - great food, good prices & friendly service - nuff said! Actually, every customer I speak to in the shop all say they are the best katlamas in the Midlands!

I love the food that gets by making me remember the nostalgic eating at my old town. Juicy flavour kebab naan . But it’s quite a small place and if larger could accommodate more than an average Karahi center with Desi meals. It has potential on such a busy street too. Love to the desis in the kitchen. Made my day and laugh coz it’s Desi nothing else 😊

I have heard alot about the katlamas here so as I was passing I thought I would get some. I bought 5 for £3 each. As I got home the oil on the katlamas was coming out of the bag. Used to come here a lot about 10 years ago but havnt been for ages. The lamb curry is still really lovely although maybe a little too much ghee for my taste but that can be overlooked it's a traditional recipe. I ordered a veg samosa that was reheated but cold in the middle and very greasy to the point I just couldn't eat it. I will return for the lamb curry & chapati

So i’ve been going to this place with my dad as a kid and i’m 36 now and we’ve always had this on Sunday’s but past 3-5 years the food had changed a little because of new ownership so i stopped going! Last week i thought lets get Katlama’s which they are known for! I got 8 and was charged £24! I had 1 and normally i would have more later in the day but this time it was different! I felt so sick and the taste was so OFF it did not feel like i was having them from the same place and even there Red sauce was so different to how it was! Idk what’s gone wrong here! So i decided to give the rest to my brother thinking it was probably me and he had them and felt the same after and we sadly had to throw them away! This is not acceptable! Prices are extreme and food quality has gone down! Honestly i wouldn’t have given them even 1 star! Once upon a time this was my fav place in Bham. Shame it’s come to this! I hope the owners take a read and make serious changes! Bring it back to how it was!

The paya curry is spicy but nice and naan is nice and soft. The katlama and chicken pakoras are average, the sweet rice (zarda/mutanjan) is very dissapointing it didn't taste of much, a bit dry and had peanuts in...maybe ran low on almonds that day, but I wouldn't buy it again. I Would have paya and naan again. Customer service was good. They do take card payments which is good. The mithai is just average unfortunately, other places do it much better in brum so probably wouldn't buy it from them again.

Highly greasy food particularly the halva puree on Saturday/Sundays washed down with desi chai ! Katlamas are not that awesome, filled with stodgy dough, only 10% meat with other fillers and a complimentary tummy bug! But do highly recommend the Nihari, Paya and Haleem with paratha !!! Ras malai is lovely. Food freshly cooked daily. Place could be cleaner and needs re-modernization as it looks the same since the 80s! Reasonably good value for money and I would recommend giving it a try.

I ordered a large amount of food for Eid. Sweet Rice, Brown Rice, Katlamas, Samosas, Tandoori Chicken, Rasmalai, Gajrella, A box full of mitai. In total it cost approx £200. Sweet rice, seemed was scraped from the bottom of the pot, full of oil, all broken up. The rice itself they use was very cheap. No one touched, it went straight to the bin. Brown rice, was below average, that only one person took a few spoons of, others wouldn’t touch, it went straight to the bin. Tandoori chicken was very dry, you literally had to drink a sip of water with each bite to swallow it. Again they all went in to bin. Pakoras both vegetable and chicken. They were hard, seemed they were old, had been microwaved a number of times, then stored and then re-sold. Absolutely disgusting. Rasmalai. A number of packets. The milk was creamy, again it had gone off, went straight in to the bin. Mitai. It was just average. Nothing special about it. A box of white jalebi. That too was average, nothing special about it. Moral of the story is, keep far far away from this place people, if you have money to throw away, by all means come here. If not, keep away. I would give them minus stars 🌟 if I could but there’s no such features on Google at the moment.

I have been visiting the Shereen now for about 40 years and have seen many changes of owners and chefs and I can honestly say that I have never ever had a bad meal !! Starters, main courses and even the sweets have always been very tasty and meat has never been tough or chewy like some restaurants. I moved out of Birmingham about 12 years ago to the Cotswolds area but I still drive to the Shereen at least once a month to eat there and also bulk buy a few curries. Can’t speak highly enough of the restaurant.

But I only had a katalama and sauce from there that's not to say the rest off the food is not nice. Also they are friendly in there. but in my experience leaving food out next to the door not covered up is not good there's flies flying about from the rubbish left on the street not saying it's this places rubbish but still

Tasty and overall enjoyable curry. Chicken diapza, which was great. Special rice, not sure what was special about it, it was fine but far from amazing and have to admit it was a strange selection of rices available, no vegetable, no mushroom or anything else like that available. pashweshi naan was pretty good and tasty but a little greasy. We did have a sweet cannot remember the name but told its made by frozen condensed milk, can't say I will be having that again, it wasn't great and frozen like a brick. Overall enjoyable food and for the price of course would go again, only about £20 for 2 of us. However service needs to be looked at, had similar service from other establishments like this and they don't get it right at all. Always feel like the food is just thrown on the table and young waiter removing the water from the table whilst we was still eating is just rude! Toilets ok, but not amazing, someone had watered down vastly the last little bit of handsoap! Seriously can they not afford to shop at Lidl next door for a new one?

This is reputed to be the first balti to be opened in Birmingham. In the late 80 we went to this restaurant for their famous katalams. They were tasty and juicy and the curries were great and so were the Indian sweets. As the years went by we visited less and less.and only went there to get some sweets but noticed that the standards of the restaurant had gone down. Our friend took my husband and me for lunch as he had heard it was under new management. We had 4 different very tasty dishes. For starters we had chicken kebabs; very juicy and tasty. Leaving us wanting more. Then came our mains of Hellim, chickpea and potato curry which was. Good except the chickpeas needed a bit more cooking, and an ample amount of excellent chicken and lamb curry. Tummies full we decided to share some rasmalla. This sweet was creamy not to sweet and the rasmallas were big and creamy. This is one place I would really recommend you to visit. Nice decor, efficient service and very good food. The open early for Indian breakfast everyday. I am going to try this sometime if I rise early. Look out for my breakfast review sometime but in the meantime give this place a try.

I have been coming here forty years. It has had its ups and downs but now, under new management, seems to be back on form. The kebabs and rasmalai are as good as ever and the curries are tasty. I suspect the one star reviews from people with only a couple of previous entries are 'knocking copy' from rival establishments. A welcome survivor of a traditional Balti house amongst loads of trendy, but inferior, restaurants.

This should to be one of the best places on the planet for their Katlamas during the 1980's through to the 2000's. Back in the days as a child just the aroma from the food in the car was enough to literally make your mouth water.. Then the fine pastry on the katlama, and the nice rich mince meat inside. Coupled with their red sauce was bound to make your week and make you look forward to your next visit. Fast forward to today, I tend to stay away.... Pop in once in a blue moon just on the glimmer of hope that somehow someway they have managed to restore this place back to its glory days. But nope, have been thoroughly disappointed every single time. You guys need to bring back the original recipes and quality or not sure how much longer the glory days will carry your business forward into the future. Even if the prices had to raise quite a bit......

In it's heyday this restaurant was famous for it's Sunday puri and chickpea breakfast. Recently moved back into the area so came to have a look. The place was not inviting and a little bit grimy and the samosas were very disappointing. As other reviewers have mentioned this place is over 40 years old. It's desperately in need of a makeover and a revamp of the menu. You would have thought that being in business for all that time would have generated enough profit to re-invest in what used to be an institution in Balsall Heath. The spirit in the place is subdued and that was sad to see as all my memories were of a popular restaurant buzzing with happy customers.

Introduced to me by a friend. Have only had the breakfast from here which is halwa puri. Delicious chickpea broth served with pastry and sweet halwa.

I have been coming to Shahreens for around 30 years. The place had not changed much over the years but the food has lot very greasy, the seekh kebabs have half in size, hardly any meat inside the katlumas. I have heard that the old chef left and set his own restaurant up on ladypool road call THE TASTE OF PAKISTAN, been there great tasting food of old Shahreens. On a end note CHECK & ADD your bill before paying, the last 3 times we have been there we FELT we've been over charged between £4 to £8 and this we asked him to check and it was over by £6 which he corrected SO BEWARE. It's a shame the place is run like this now (the old man who set it up over 30 years ago would have not been happy).

We visited this restaurant following a review in the Birmingham Mail and were not disappointed. The restaurant may be basic, with menus under the glass on the table, but the food is stunning. We had the mixed grill, vegetable pakora & tandoori fish for starters, all of which were lovely. We all had balti's for our main with beautiful nan breads. On the waiters recommendation we had ras mali for desert. The whole meal was £15 per head. We were made very welcome & had a lovely evening. This was our first vist, but certainly won't be our last.

Love this restaurant. I had the Chicken Kali Mirch and it was just like proper hone cooked food. A good sized portion too. Lovely dessert. I had the cookie dough with ice cream and was another good sized portion. Just a shame I live an hour away, but worth the drive over! Highly recommended.

Good selection of traditional Cantonese food. The flavours were very authentic but the food was a bit too salty. Decent prices. We'd like to visit again next time we're near there.
