Absolutely the best roast we’ve had in years. The gravy was to die for, the meat tender and juicy and the Yorkshires 👌🏻. To top it off the staff were so lovely and helpful with myself and my husband trying to get a taxi in to town, ordered us a taxi and gave us great recommendations as to where to eat and drink while there. Amazing. Would 100% recommend over and over… especially on a Sunday!

We had lunch which was so good we booked dinner the same evening. Some of the best pub food I have eaten, whole lobster £45, rib eye £25 and great pasta dishes. All complete meals, no need to add sides. An absolute gem, just a shame it is so far away from me in Dorset!

An interesting old building with a facinating history. Lots of small rooms. Food good and staff very plesant. We were in our motorhome on a site nearby, and as the roads are very narrow the pub sends out someone to pick up and bring back - excellent service. The pub is also dog friendly.

Beware! Worst meal we have ever had! The food was like warm, meat was chewy, gravy was basically brown water. The pub itself smells of cats and is dark and dirty. We should have listened to the many reviews of how bad the food is and not come here in the first place. The only redeeming quality was the host was very friendly however still Made us pay for our meals even though we didn’t touch them and mentioned how terrible it was. And to top of off asked us to leave a good review in lieu of a tip! Incredible!

Tried to speak to management got blocked then on fb called nasty and judging by other reviews here and google u can actually see the management doesn’t take criticism well. Beautiful place. Real shame about what owners bring. Flat coke. Uncooked food and nasty replies when tried to talk to them. Could of saved a review

The first noticeable thing was the very helpful staff. There’s a musty smell about the pub and there were the four of us and two others in the bar. My beer was totally cloudy but the bar person explained that it was meant to be that way. Three of us had curry and the other a pie left over from the night before. I hate to say but all the curries were shocking but any chef worth his salt would know that . The pie was good

He recommended the freshly cooked doughnuts filled with ice cream of our choice and we had those and also waffles. All of it was so good and we left completely full and happy! We also brought our two springers who were made welcome and we were given a space where they could have free roam. Such a great find. Staff were friendly and offered a good explanation of all the many choices on the menu, what would be suitable for my gluten free wife, what local drinks they had. Food arrived with smile and very good portion sizes and owner and other staff were coming round to chat with guests and check how they were getting on. This was an excellent night out. We were after somewhere within walking distance of local campsite and this seemed to fit the bill. We were a little hesitant given the dining restrictions around COVID eg only able to eat outside under a marquee and it being Sunday just having the choice of a meat of veggie roast. However, it was absolutely fantastic. Tom was a friendly and very efficient host, the beer was great and the food excellent. He offered (maybe slightly tongue in cheek) to pay for the veggie meals if they didn't like their vegetarian offering, but no need, clean plates all round. Finished off with amazing waffles amongst other deserts. This was a fine example of a local pub with excellent friendly service doing really well in trying times. Absolutely fantastic. What a super find! We were made to feel so welcome (as was our little dog), the owners were very friendly and took time to chat to us. In fact all the staff were lovely. The room was perfect and I must say the bed was so comfortable, it was sleeping on a cloud. We booked to eat which I am so glad we did, it is very popular and quickly filled up. Some diners who hadn't booked did leave disappointed as they were out of luck getting a table. And what a treat they missed. We chose from the Wessex Tapas (at last a chef that knows what Tapas is all about). Every dish we ordered was perfect, really tasty and beautifully presented. Our favourite (which was hard to choose) must have been the Morcilla with Chick Peas cooked in Red Wine and the Portland Crab on Sourdough. In the morning our breakfast was just as good. We ventured out to Shaves Cross again today. This time when we asked at 2 minutes to 2pm (sign out the front clearly says food served til 2pm) we were told (again by an arrogant student) "all cokking implements have been turned off! We've had a busy weeekend and we dont have any crisps either". Mothering Sunday and The Shaves Cross Marathon are two dates that Shaves Cross benifit from hugley and yet on both of this dates the pub has been under stocked and has arrogant staff front of house! As someone who has been in hospitality for 20 years I am appauled that a Pub with so much potential is being run into the ground! We will NOT be making it 3rd time Lucky.

We were a party of 10 and the welcome and service we received was superb. Really varied menu, suiting vegetarians, dairy intolerant and meat eaters. All our meals were served quickly and were absoluttely delicious. I can't recommend the Shave Cross Inn highly enough

Very good friendly pub serving good pub food. Sunday roasy is well worth it. Beers tend to be a bit niche. All in all a very enjable visit.

We stopped in here for dinner because we were staying at a near by campsite. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The staff could have been friendly, the food was surely the best for miles around and the beer was delicious.

We had a fantastic lunch after a very blustery walk! We ordered some tapas and were very pleasantly surprised by the large portions! The food was delicious, as was the beer and cider. The landlady was so friendly and went out of her way to give us some advice about events in the local area. A lovely, baby friendly pub. If we're ever in the area again, we will definitely be back!

What an excellent place! This could seriously bankrupt us, going back for more! Delicious food, best Thai cooking outside Thailand I've had! Great steaks and puddings! Beautiful old building, well done up with open fire! And a garden for summer! Love it!

Perfect leisurely lunch in beautiful cottage garden. We both had ribeye steak with chips to die for. The Watercress ale - recommended to increase sperm count was refreshing. We will definitely come again.

We turned up with our dog without a booking but, unfortunately, the bar was full. A few minutes later we were called and informed a table had become available; very lucky as we had the most delicious lunch in such a friendly pub.

Called into this lovely pub for lunch today and had the best food we've had in this area for a long time. Lovely setting, friendly welcome and good service. Beautiful food We could not fault it - and we are fussy!. An extra nice touch was a good guitarist with a wonderfully mellifluous voice which added ambiance without being intrusive. It was very busy so probably best to book ahead. Loads of character as the pub is 14th century - log fire and garden, dog friendly. A real hidden gem in a lovely corner of Dorset.

Lovely pub, found on a short walk up from the campsite we were staying on. First visit found it shut so we returned on a Friday evening.

I had a fantastic lunch here yesterday during a very wet walk. The staff were very friendly and accommodating to a wet traveller and his very wet dog. I started with the smoked mackerel, and had the roast pork. Both were superb. Portions were generous, and it was all washed down with a couple of pints of great ale. I would recommend to anyone, it was worth a soaking to taste fresh and interesting food!

Stopped for lunch on a quiet Saturday. The welcome and beer was excellent but the food was exceptional. We had 3 tapas plates followed by pork knuckle. All were perfection. We will be back later this week. The dogs loved the biscuits too.
