Shao in Edinburgh, City of

Everything from the pickled veg to the macha red bean egg yolk puff (would recommend) was absolutely delicious, the pork belly was juicy and tender and the dumplings were hot and made from fresh ingredients. Only thing I didn't like is that I had no room for more.

Surprisingly very authentic Cantonese food. We had the pork liver congee, roasted three meats plate (char shiu, roast pork w crispy skin, soy sauce chicken), and three dim sum dishes. The size of the food were larger than we expected, and all very well prepared.

Excellent Korean barbecue with lots of other pan-Asian options as well. Cookers on every table and attentive staff. Great choice for students right by the uni.

Among the diversified restaurants, we chose the Korean BBQ, which has a generous portion.

Meeting an old friend in a foreign country gives you a sense of intimacy. You can eat Korean barbecue, dim sum, and all kinds of other dishes.

Roasted duck, crispy pork belly and char sui ho fun was very delicious and the proportion was very generous. Dim sum tasted wonderful as well. The seafood pancakes, japchae and tteokbokki were very delicious as well. But the service was slow.

Food is quite good. We have steamed dumpling and some other dim sum. Authentic Chinese food👍🏻

Ordered pickup, 30mins. I liked Tempura vegetables, variety and amount good. Steak with soy sauce and onions good, portion of boiled rice as well. Lettuce leaf as wrap perfect way to eat a little of everything and be healthy.

Authentic Hong Kong dim sum, and fried flat noodle with beef. On repeated visit, this time tried the rice dumplings which is also authentic and good.

What a shambles. Booked for 9pm. Had to wait until 9.30 before we had to ask for menu's and drinks. Food ordered, nothing for over 30mins then rice arrived. We asked for our starters, we were told, you want them now before your meal. Total disaster, meat fatty and gristly. Cost £120 for 3 people. We weren't the only ones that night who left unhappy. Never again.

Delicious Korean BBQ in the middle of Edinburgh. Staff were very helpful and started cooking the meat for our sharing platter on the griddle in front of us and left us so that we could cool it as well done as we desired ourselves. Ingredients appear to be high quality and the dishes tasted great and authentically Korean. Would definitely go back. Delicious. Full for the rest of the day.

Eva and I had both never been to a Korean restaurant before, and we were both very impressed! Helpful staff, generous portion sizes, a great mixture of flavours, interesting Korean drinks, chopsticks to make the dining experience a slow and relaxed one... a very enjoyable evening for us both and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a meal in Edinburgh We both hope to be back at this restaurant someday!

Was so difficult to find good Cantonese dim sum in Edinburgh. But luckily Shao offers some of the usual things we can find. The quality was better than I expected and everything came fresh. Also packaged well & clean with a complimentary side dish (spicy pickled veggie & seasoned beansprout) and dipping sauce.

Really good food, a lot of variety. Highly recommend. Vegetable egg fried rice, tempura, pork rice, it was all excellent. Reasonably priced, too.

Terrble customer experience. No other table but the two of us; ordered a BBQ for 2 plate. The staff randomly would not let us split the check or give us two receipts; which was vital since we are being reimbursed by receipt. Food was mediocre. Staff kept being pushy to get us to order more high priced item. Staff could not answer basic questions such as 'which ingredient is this?" 50 +quid plus service charge for this terrible experience; 3 sad veggies sides and no carb / rice included. Won't return. Caveat Emptor. Happy to discuss this further. Best wishes.

The paper box used for takeout packaging was rotten when delivered and spilled all over the bag. I suggest using plastic boxes next time.

With particularly empty bellies I left it to my partner to order several Dim sum alongside Char Shuer pork & a bowl of Congee. He had nostalgia for home made Hong Kong style congee. Staff were excellent in advising us on food and actually recommended that this would be a LOT, & she wasn’t wrong! Congee with Chicken was tasty. For those not squired to this wall paper looking over cooked rice-it’s skin to porridge. You have to have flavouring, but it is strangely comforting! 3 way Char suer pork with rice was flavoursome with excellent audibly crunchy crackling. There were little bits of bone so do be careful, but this is unavoidable. Dim Sum; Rice with nuts & salted egg yolks. Has such a recognisable taste (egg yolk) wrapped in banana leaves and steamed cresting a stodgy & filling accompaniment. Prawn & pork dumpling-little parcels much like Sui Mai. Totally morish & the wrapper is perfectly thin. Fried Crystal prawn dumplings were a little like mochi with a thick but light batter. Moolie (Chinese radish) had a nice texture. Sides of Asian slaw & pickled carrots came as standard. Custard & sesame seed balls are Huge & delish but best saved for dessert. A pot of roasted rice green tea that was refilled again & plum juice rounded things off to £60 which included a 10% gratuity, which annoyingly is automatically added. I would have tipped anyway but we weren’t told about this time which is a personal peeve. For the amount of food (we left with a box! It would have been suited to three people, it came out quickly & piping hot. Staff refilled our cups and left us to it. Very polite. Looking forward to returning. I’d say this is informal relaxed dining. It got super noisy as there is no soft furnishings but if you don’t mind this you will enjoy some super authentic Korean food at very reasonable prices. There are a small selection of tofu dishes & options for veggies.

The food is amazing, full of flavor and passed the palate taste of my B-I-L who is a chef himself who was with me yesterday 04/29/24. I ordered a beef bulgogi and it was delicious although i miss the rice portion of it. The only down side we can think of is the menu options, there are too many dishes on the menu to choose from. The food itself regardless what we ordered was good.

Great BBQ, great service, great times.

An easy 5 all around, this not so hidden gem (smack in the middle of the “student quarter” next to the Edinburgh Uni central campus) offers excellent Far Eastern Asian cuisine in a cozy, accessible setting. It is impossible to pick a favourite - everything we tried, from the pork buns to the spicy tempura prawns and the bulgogi were fantastic. We actually found impossible to limit our order to a few items, and had to take food back home. There is no excuse NOT to visit Shao if you’re in town.

Such a great restaurant, authentic guangdong food, great value and friendly staff. I’ve been here a couple of times and definitely coming in the future.

Everything is very good. We ordered the full BBQ menu and it was brutal. We made a mistake in one dish and honestly it was a success. Lunch for 3 people up to £77!!

The food is amazingly authentic, the service is even more amazing. They suggested us to stay and chat a little bit to wait for the sudden rain to pass, even offered a refill for our tea. Will definitely revisit🥰

Food was expensive, mostly bland and mediocre at best. Some part of the char siu, pork belly, and duck i ordered was cold- probably microwaved from frozen. Scallops were small and very grainy with the chewy vermicelli which were also not seasoned well. Heard from a friend this place was good but was thoroughly disappointed, would not recommend.

It has become my latest favourite Chinese eatery in town! Dim sums are really nice, fresh and a good portion! They have rice dumplings which you don't usually find in Edinburgh. Try the congee, or rice porridge, it is delicious.

Ate really delicious Korean BBQ. The meat was very well seasoned. The friendly operator took a lot of time to answer our questions.

The food was not particularly delicious. It was just a place for students to fill their stomachs. Halfway through the meal, the light above the head suddenly broke. The whole place was dim and dark. However, the variety of meals was very rich, including Hong Kong, Korean, and Japanese. If you have a chance, go again. Go try BBQ

It amazingly satisfied my nostalgic appetite. Their very friendly staff speak Cantonese too! I ordered a Hong Kong styled 3-in-1 dish with rice (Char Siu, roast belly pork & roast duck) and egg tarts, which are my usual favourites. I would give it 5 stars if there could be less fat in the roast duck, and if the egg tarts have a higher proportion of eggs. Truly hope they could become better and better as a new eatery in Edinburgh.

A Hong Kong friend and I went to this lovely Cantonese and Korean restaurant conveniently located near the Central Campus of the University of Edinburgh. The décor was simple and refreshing, making it feel spacious inside. There were also fresh flowers on each table. We were offered three different complimentary pickles (shredded carrots, sliced red cabbage and bean sprouts) as appetisers. The waitresses were very friendly and considerate. We ordered braised beef brisket with radish and rice and stewed fish belly with tofu but no drink. They very kindly brought us two small bowls for sharing food and one more jug of water. Our dishes were in satisfactorily big portion and tasted authentic and delicious. It was a very pleasant experience and we would happily recommend this restaurant to every diner in the area.

My partner and I wanted to try something different and found this place. We were very happy with the service and food. The BBQ set menu D was more than enough for the two of us. The pork bun was also delicious and prices are reasonable. We will happily come back.

Excellent meal out with the family. Korean food was new to us, but definitely will be back. Lady who served us was helpful and explained choices. Food came quickly. Delicious and doggy bags were required. There's no alcohol licence but a range of interesting soft drinks. Brown Rice Milk is worth a try!

Avoid this place if you have a allergies or a gluten free diet. The manager, waiters and the cook are incompetent. They didn't know what was gluten free. I ordered food that had gf symbol. I had finished my starter when the waiter came over and asked me if I was feeling ill because they had given me a sauce, not knowing if it contained gluten. Then the manager was screaming at her staff and pointing at me. It was embarrassing. It was the worse gluten free food I've had in restaurant. I was ill and missed out, on seeing my father in-law Fringe show because of the poor services at this restaurant. Please be careful when eating here! This occurred 5.30pm on the 19th August 2023.

Delicious, nice service, great price, our first meal in Edinburgh and will definitely come back!! Try the roasted duck, it normally serves for dinner.

Es wurde für uns extra ein vegetarischer Hotpot vorbereitet, obwohl es keinen auf der Speisekarte gab - sehr zuvorkommend und sehr netter Service!!! (UND lecker!!!)

Invited by a friend, I really enjoyed this restaurant. It's, however, not easy to find GF food so you only have to ask. They are very friendly and welcoming. It's a very good one. I recommend it.

Really enjoyed ourselves. The service is very good too, dry humble and nice people. All dishes were authentic. Recommend the pork belly - enjoyed every bit of it. Portions are quite good as well. Will come back!

The ambience and food at Shao was really special! We came as a group and Ling and the group were incredibly accommodating throughout - this place has a wide menu, with many traditional asian dishes made so well. Thank you! PS, try her deserts!

My favorite place to eat near the university! They have delicious dimsums, my favourites are: 56, 60 , 66. You should try them!

Very friendly staff, good service, good food! The restaurant is clean and the tables have fresh flowers which is cute. The spicy prawn tempura is extremely good and you get a lot too. I'll be coming back with a friend tomorrow so they can try it too. Thank you!

Absolutely amazing korean bbq! Had set D which was a mix of pork, beef and chicken and devoured the whole lot! Would absolutely go again and entirely recommend!

We tried some dim sum and barbecue. Dim sum is not as good as expected and the ox is so chewy. But the service is good

Not amazing but quite good! Tastes homemade and certainly way better than steaming frozen ones yourself at home. About 2-3 dim sum dishes each. Would come back again ( maybe tomorrow haha). Can bring own alcoholic beverage in. Well-priced & can pay by card. One thing they should fix is the insane flickering lights - probably need sunglasses while dining to prevent an epileptic seizure 😎 Our waiter was nice.
