Great reviews. Interesting menu. Make a booking online. Turned up. Restaurant closed. Looked as though it had been closed a while. Went to Aluna instead. Had a great meal. Advice - call to make a booking, don't rely on online.

Wonderful staff, they recommended I try the vegan platter which came with injeera. It was my first time trying Ethiopian/Eritrean food, so I wanted to have something “typical” of the cuisine. The food was delicious, and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend and would love to come back some day!

We came in fairly late on a Saturday night having seen the day get away from us, and found this place which was open late enough. We got in just before the kitchen closed and I consider myself incredibly lucky that we did: the food was incredible. The cocktails were also really good, but the server who was working the bar helped us with recommendations on food and was absolutely wonderful throughout. We opted to share a mixed platter and every single part was delicious. I can’t pick out a stand out item because it was all so good. Absolutely no hesitation to recommend this place, if you’re in the area you should definitely make a point of visiting and eating here.

Delicious food and great service! We ordered the meat/veg platter and it was quality food and very tasty! We also had the coffee ceremony which was lovely. Server was super friendly (Devora?) and fun to talk to. The place was recently renovated and it is very nice and the pictures on TripAdvisor don’t represent how lovely it it now. Definitely recommend!

I celebrated my birthday on 15th January 2021. The main food was really nice apart from the soup. Apart from the chaos and disorganisation with the main being brought out before the starters and forgetting the cutlery I couldn’t fault the food much. But what I found very disappointing was that they tried to con us out of money when we asked for the bill. First of all they forgot to take of the £55 deposit of the bill, their excuse was because other people ordered extra meals. That didn’t make sense to me so insisted that they either give me back my deposit or take it off the bill. The waitress got the bill amended. Then my friends noticed that the prices online were different to what was presented on the day. Their excuse was that the online menu had not been amended and that we would have to pay the more expensive price. I argued that we came to the restaurant based on the online prices and the fact that they hadn’t amended the prices online wasn’t my problem. Reluctantly they revised the bill. Then my friend noticed that they charged her for a starter that she didn’t receive and and charged her for the complimentary soup that she was told could have for free. So I had to get the bill amended again. Then on top of that they charged us £20 for a bottle of Rose. Now admittedly they did say we could only bring Champagne because they didn’t sell that there. But none of the other guest knew that. At any point they could’ve just said sorry you can’t drink any other beverages. I wasn’t going to pay that but my mom paid that plus gave a £10 tip which I thought was crazy lol. The funny thing is, despite the chaos of it all at the beginning they still would’ve got a bigger tip from the rest of the guests on my table. But because they tried to rob us blind, maybe because they think we wouldn’t notice, myself or any of my friends will never go back to that restaurant again and will be encouraging them to write a review about this restaurant.

Devora was serving me and she was very helpful advising on tastes and flavours. Compliments to the chef . The flavour was just right. not too spicy -just mouthwatering . Recommended. 👍

Visited here after reading the great reviews and we were keen to try Ethiopian food. I was quite underwhelmed on arrival. The place was empty, our tablecloth was stained and it just didn’t feel clean. While we were waiting for food a man came in and ordered and sat watching something very loud on his phone for the duration of the meal. It was all a bit odd.The food was delicious and the welcome was warm. Sadly I wasn’t surprised when I found a hair in my food. I doubt I would return due to the cleanliness issues and lack of ambience. It’s a shame as the food itself tasted good.

Neither of us had any understanding of what Ethiopian and Eritrean food would be like so we ordered a couple of starters and a veggie platter to share. It was delicious and flavourful but not spicy. The traditional bread, injera, was tasty. The closest comparison I can make is a Staffordshire oatcake made with sourdough. There was a tomato lentil dish which was great scooped up into some of the injera which you tear as you go. You’re encouraged to eat as the Ethiopians would, with your hands, but I’m sure they’d provide you a fork if you wanted one.

As we were eating the worker kept checking up on us, seeing if we still had injera or if we wanted any drinks maybe: excellent service. After the food we enjoyed a traditional coffee ceremony. I have never left a negative review in my life, I also think that you can expect some sort of standard when you go out to eat. Unfortunately, the standard at this restaurant was very poor. Where do I start? As soon as we entered the door, the place was empty. My husband and I were really hungry and decided to try it anyways. We came to the restaurant for authentic Ethiopian food, but in fact what we had was nothing close to what we expected. First of all, the restaurant is on Tastecard and the deal is 50% over the whole menu. The manager wasn’t really happy with that and made us get drinks and pay extra for our starters. We had to wait a long time for our food and we could literally hear the microwave from our seats. First we asked for fresh juices and what we got was the opposite. When the starters came it was clear that the food was microwaved. I’ve ordered Timtimo rolls that were soggy and not fresh at all and my husband ordered spicy prawns that were so watery, not cleaned properly and chewy. We waited for our mains hoping that it will make up for the starters and what we had was even more disappointing. We ordered the veg and the meat platter. My veg platter came with the same filling of my starter, soggy wilted spinach and over cooked mushy veg and a salad. My husband platter had the same veggies as mine and the meat was not cooked. All of the food was tasteless, it was almost impossible to eat, everything was undercooked or overcooked and you can tell that it’s just microwaved. The service was absolutely disappointing. In addition, we spend almost 22£(on a 50% discount) but the price is not comparable to the food and service. In conclusion the whole experience was not good, I would never go again to this place for any reason and I don't recommend this restaurant, not even to my worst enemy.

The restaurant serves Eritrean/Ethiopian food. Most dishes are served with injera – a large flatbread, from which the diner tears a piece and wraps it around the food, eating it without cutlery. We chose the Ajubo Hamli, which we would thoroughly recommend from among a wide variety of vegetarian options. Helpings are generous, but the staff allow diners to take home what they cannot eat on the premises.

So why not 5 star? Firstly I went midweek and there were only two other people in the restaurant. However my starter still took 25 minutes to arrive. I had a mixed platter of vegetable and meat dishes, and a couple of the lamb dishes were a bit tougher than I would have expected. On the plus side I really enjoyed the food - the waiter recommended the mixed dish, which was not on the menu. On top of this, the Eritrean beer went down very easily. So if you are feeling adventurous, try Savanna, but just don’t expect perfection.

First, although they are on Groupon (Under the name Shamrock, it's the same place but with a name change and they've changed their post-code slightly) and on Taste Card, they do not honour either. Just be aware of this before you go.

I visited Savanna with my mum and my sister. We are all vegetarian and having never eaten Ethiopian food before and being largely unaware of what Ethiopian food is like, we weren't sure whether there would be much choice. There was plenty, and the only problem was deciding what to choose. We shared a platter and it was delicious. The injela was so filling and the dishes were full of flavour. We had an Ethiopian beer, which was very nice and my mum tried a honey wine. This was a little like mead, but lighter and not as sweet, it was home made too.

This was my third visit to Savanna since June and I have loved it every time. I always feel so at home and welcomed by the various family members who work here - the chef is the mum, and her daughters who work here too; they are very kind, patient and so attentive as well. Onto the food...The starter lentil soup is to die for - it's so exotic and tastes like a walk through a beautiful garden, yet manages to be warming in a very welcome way without being over-hot/dominated by spice. The hummus I enjoyed very much too and I felt it was a generous portion. Both chicken dishes (main courses) I've tried on past occasions were excellent but my favourite main dish of all is what I had this third time round - the vegetarian platter, which was mouth-watering perfection!! Because I couldnt eat the traditional Injera bread (I have a gluten intolerance), instead the chef/owner (a very lovely lady) gave me a beautifully made vegetable/lightly spiced rice which had a little lamb surprise in it too - it was all divine.

I was on my own and had the mixed plate - so good and filling. Welcoming and friendly service. And the food is served on edible thin bread that you can literally eat! Would definitely return and recommend

Lovely restaurant. I had never eaten Ethiopian food before, and the waitress was very patient whilst we asked silly questions, she didn't bat an eyelid when we requested a knife and fork either. We both ordered different chicken dishes with a vegetable platter to share so that we got to try lots of different things. The food was really nice, "Betty" told us that she cooked it all - she was lovely and obviously took pride in their restaurant. The atmosphere was really relaxed and the service was excellent. The food and drinks were really good value, I would recommend this restaurant to all!

We were just driving past, and decided to come in for lunch. What a gem! The food was so delicious that we really struggled to leave. The staff were extremely helpful, explaining their cuisine and giving advice. And, with a Tastecard, a very filling lunch for two only cost us £17. Brilliant.

We went here because we had never eaten Ethiopian food and it was great. Family run business really very friendly and as authentic as it could be. Lady who owned and cooked the food explained everything and was a great host. If you have never eaten this type of food it's a bit of a mix between middle eastern and Indian. Open until 5 in the morning. Well worth a visit.

This is a fantastic little place - good food, friendly staff and very good prices. Went here on a whim using our tastecard and were very impressed. If you have never experienced Ethiopian cuisine before this is a great place to try it! (Just be ready to eat with your hands.)

We booked Savanna restaurant using their online form, our choice based on previous reviews and the handy location to the Hippodrome.Having never had Eritrean food before we were unsure what to expect but waitress/hostess was wonderfully welcoming and friendly giving explanations and recommendations from the menu.We chose the mixed sharing platter so that we could have a wide selection of different dishes. Food was delivered quickly, was tasty, varied and very reasonably pricedOpen late, Savanna would be a great choice for groups looking for somewhere different with a friendly relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and surprisingly central location.

Groupon meals can be dodgy I must admit, however I noted that this restaurant's reviews on tripadvisor all seemed quite good, this is quite unusual. A friend and I came on a Friday evening. It was not very busy, but the service was personal and attentive. I guess they are used to people not knowing much about their food. If you don't read all this review, just note that we were so stuffed we had to take the left overs home and there was a lot, and we are big eaters. I'm terrible at remembering dish names, but I have added some photos. Everything was delicious, we had meat and veg, one that was spicy, you don't realize how filling injera is. That is the brown bread like item. Try it out and you won't be disappointed. The deco/ambience gives you a nice African relaxed chill feel. The restaurant is spacious and big enough for group parties. There is parking at the front, but its full often, so I parked round the block.
