What a fantastic place lovely atmosphere and overall feel of the place is really inviting. The food we had was delicious, cooked and presented well. The staff were really warm and welcoming. As a visitor for the 1st time I will definitely be back.

Lovely food, two of us had a tapas selection and one had a pie, all fantastic. Great atmosphere and helpful friendly staff.

Kitchen closed half past seven.

My 1st pub on arrival in Edinburgh. Friendly bar service at lunch. The steak and ale pie was fantastic.

Lovely staff and atmosphere, the food was delicious and not too expensive.

The place is a real Scottish pub. The food is amazing! The absolute best sticky toffee in the world. Warm chocolate, custard around it. I was staying at the Sheraton across the way, so it was an easy walk. They have a lot of beers on tap plus some local whisky

I couldn't contain my anger not to give this place a one star review I put £650 through the £100 jackpot machine because I have ADHD and a self control problem but what happened was beyond a joke,the reason this place gets a one star review is because the pub chain gets a share of the profits from the scam machines which... as it turns out are illegal they are supposed to pay out based on a percentage none of the excuses for what happened today it was decently borderline illegal practices £350 was spent on 50p on fishing frenzy and it took LITERALLY £350 and didn't give a single bonus over £30 pounds it only gave 3 bonuses!!!! then after the entire £350 was scammed from me I put in £100 and played a bit more then changed game with about 100 in the balance it took ALL of that then another hundred down to my last one hundred pounds and down to £1 my last spin was the jackpot with a repeat so £650 for £200 I was scared to play it because 3 bonuses in £350 is scandalous that's 700 spins..... honestly after that I wished this was all a bad dream but here we are! Will be complaining to the company who runs these and demanding a refund.

Had a lovely time here, wonderful staff, great drinks, love the music on a Friday night, Scott and Sandy very knowledgeable on whisky, can’t wait for my next visit

A pleasant pub to pass the time in.

We found this pub across the street from Sheraton where we were staying. Nice inside, all of our food was delicious and fortunately an “uncrowded” night. Concert hall right next door, so I’ll bet it gets jammed on occasion.

On the day I visited, it happened to be a time when they couldn't serve food, so they turned away several groups of customers. I was only interested in beer, so I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has the feel of a quiet, laid-back local pub compared to the hustle and bustle of West Bow, south of the castle.

Decent prices for the center of Edinburgh, incredibly nice staff. Only issue is that it can get very crowded.

Nice but busy pub next to Edinburgh's Usher Hall. If there's an event on, it's mobbed. On the occasion I was there, there was space between seats, so we were not crammed in like sardines and had no choice in overhearing the conversations of those next to you. Mature customers in for a drink, chat and/or food.

Thought this was a great place! We spent the evening here and the staff was brilliant. We did not order any food but had nice drinks and watched the games. The place is quite big so it doesn't feel as crowded as many of the smaller pubs do. We're probably coming back for seconds!

Visit with friends however the sharing platter was a bit small for the price. 3 bits of halloumi on a sharing platter??? It certainly wasn't large enough to share between 3. The food was tasty enough but just not worth the price. The staff serving were pleasant but they were slow at clearing tables.

Went there to watch the Manchester derby. The atmosphere was really good even on a Sunday afternoon.

Always a great atmosphere in this pub especially on rugby game day, staff are always efficient and friendly! Even when it’s busy they try their hardest to get glasses and everything away while being rushed off their feet Got the BBQ chicken and it was so yummy! Will definitely be back for the next game!

Went back after nearly 20 years, used to work in the hotel across the road and the best nights started from here. Was nice to be back.

Used to drink here years ago and liked it so we decided to come here again and try it for the rugby. I had phoned during the week before to ask if a table could be booked but was told it was first come first served and that they opened at 12pm, we arrived around 11.50am and the bar was already open and pretty busy so someone had given the wrong information on the phone about opening times. We got a seat and ordered drinks then had a look at the food menu. We ordered trio of fries which was fine, cant really go wrong with them and also a chicken dish, this was fairly disappointing and for almost £15 should have been alot better, chicken was really dry and the cheese on top was quite watery. After ordering more drinks I handed the barman a £20 & should have got £10+ change back but he just handed me some change and walked away, I asked for the £10 that I was due and instead of getting it from the till himself, another one of the bar staff had heard and handed me the £10, no apology for the mistake either. We spent a good few hours in the bar and watched both 6 nations games but there was no real atmosphere or any hype which you would normally get in other pubs that we have been too. Another point is that alot of tables had empty glasses and no-one seemed to be coming round to collect the empties. Toilet facilities were very poor and in desperate need of some attention. All in all, we were both rather disappointed in our choice of venue this time around and we won't be back.

Typical good quality of a Greene King pub. Good choice of food at a high quality and reasonably priced. Range of beers on offer quite wide and varied. Service speedy and cannot be faulted. Good clean, friendly pub. Definitely be back if we return to Edinburgh

Nice atmospheric bar, friendly staff and good selection of drinks

Have visited the Shakespeare a lot over the years, and seen a few changes, but I've always felt comfortable and enjoyed the atmosphere, welcoming friendly staff. Can be a but noisy when football showing or when people going for dinner/drinks before going to the theatre so I avoid going then. Have never had any reason to complain about food and I feel comfortable going in on my own if I just need to rest up have a coffee or a glass of wine while out shopping.

Typical Scottish pub, nice atmosphere, nice decor, service only at the counter. Didn't taste the meal.

Not the place for a quiet drink. Other than that it was fine.

This is a cool concept and an interesting atmosphere Unfortunately, the beer was bad. I had two off the tap and either the lines were dirty or the kegs were old. We did alert the bartender. The owner has commented that they do not serve old beer so it is probably worth another go during my next visit to Edinburgh.

My family and I stopped in here after arriving in Edinburgh. Had a great food and drink menu. My son (2yo), niece (6yo), and nephew (1yo) loved it too.

Discovered this pub on a recent trip to the City. Have walked passed before but never been in. Overall great pub, friendly and quick service. Gents toilets floor was like a swimming pool security constantly checking them could have got someone to clean them! Definitely be back but with the floor sorted would be a 5/5

Haven't eaten here too often, but the food I've had has always been excellent and great value. I do however regularly drink here before concerts and shows at the nearby venues. They always have a good, small range of Greene King empire's real ales on cask at reasonable (for Edinburgh) prices, and they are always well treated. Staff are friendly and attentive, I usually sit at the bar itself and they tend to notice as soon as I'm on my last mouthful or two if I want another.

Was in a wee while back for a drink, had Katie serving me and she couldn’t have been any nicer!! 10/10 service from her!! And all the rest of the staff are lovely too! Highly recommend!!!

Had a night out here for approx 30 folk. The manager, Izzy, is so helpful and friendly. She helped me plan what I wanted and reserved space/tables for us. She was very accommodating and even put up some balloons/banners without me asking! All the staff are amazing - shout out to Anastasia. As well as all this, the place is just a very nice traditional pub with a really happy vibe. To add to that, drinks are reasonably priced. On this occassion we didnt eat from menu but I have on previous visits and have been pleased with the quality and price of the food.

This has been my regular meeting point with my friends because I went to suggest them this pub but after today I ain't going back there ever again that's for sure. Ordered a hot chocolate and some mixed nuts to snack on and asked the blonde lass working behind the counter if she could bring it over to my table as my hands were full. 15 minutes later no hot chocolate in sight nor mixed nuts. My friend arrived in the meantime and I went to ask her why she hasn't brought the hot chocolate over to me as I could see it lying there behind the counter. She had the nerve of saying she didn't see me and after that her attitude changed dramatically and she turned rude. I was sitting in the corner and she obviously didn't bother looking around properly. Wish all the best to the rest of the staff but this lass clearly doesn't have a clue how to work in a place like this.

This spot is delightful. The service was impeccable, particularly Daniel (bar staff). He was attentive, flexible, and fun. He listened to my ridiculous drink order (being American) and didn’t judge. He is my new, favorite mixologist! Cheers Daniel! Until we meet again…

Belhaven-owned pub on Lothian Road, near Usher Hall theatre. The food is ok, the variety of beers is ok, the staff could be a little more helpful.

Got offered some coke in the loo, not too bad.

Waren zu fünft dort. Haben etwas gegessen. War okay kann man machen. Preisleistung war gegeben. Wir sind halt kein Fan davon, die Getränke am Therese bestellen zu müssen wenn man gemütlich in der Ecke sitzt und beim Essen ist. Dadurch ist es bei einem Getränk geblieben. Jetzt muss man dazu sagen die Altersstufen waren, 80, 2x 52, 36 und 30. Wäre ich mit 3-4 Kumpels dort und hätte das eine oder andere Bier getrunken kann ich es mir sehr gut vorstellen.

Wonderful, friendly atmosphere with great food and drink. Izzy, Dan, and Zoë we’re running the pub when we arrived. All three were super welcoming and gave us quite a bit of their time to answer our many questions about Edinburgh (we were visiting on holiday). GO HERE!

Great atmosphere,great service, coffee is greeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaat:) Daniel was behind bar a credit to the pub and deserves a pay rise...hint hint :) will come again :),have returned for lunch ,Whitby scampi ...was very good ,liked the use of sea salt on the chips ,also liked was a good serving of tartar sauce,in past alot of restaurants including Whitby stint on it ,asked for extra tartar sauce wasn't required,think I am a fair judge on this as I'm a Yorkshire lad (ok old man :))

So freaking accommodating, and the food was so good. Fish and chips was great, fries combo was interesting but not bad. Overall a really great experience especially for walking in with a large group of people. Thank you so much for making room for this bridal group Scot and Dan!

September 12 - big game Scotland vs England tonight and terrible and slow service with only 2 bartenders . One bar had people waiting not knowing it was closed and a long line at the other . While 1 is serving the other is cleaning glasses . When we got served she was was a bit sour or at least not cheery. Normally leave a tip but not tonight.

We came across The Shakespeare on our 1st day. Izzy met us at the front door an made us so welcome. The atmosphere was friendly and it was nice to see people enjoying their food and drinks after lockdown. The food and drinks we recieved was excellent, we could not complain. Izzy and the other staff made sure all our needs were met. We even felt more at home when one of the staff sayed she was from N.Ireland. We stayed on Edinburgh for 3 nights , and came back to The Shakespeare each lunchtime , as we were sure of receiving a good meal an nice drinks. Thankyou once again Izzy for making us feel welcome.

went here on a wednesday night with my wife and friends for a meal staff were nice and friendly menu looked good and reasonable priced but after long wait food arrived cold had to be returned and left to find somewhere else staff good and never charged for drinks maybe just a bad night but wont be returning.

First time in Edinburgh and this pub was amazing. Ordered a combo and it was great. Drinks value for money and toilets and pub spotless. I couldnt recomend enough izzy and gina made this experience really nice

Recientemente visitamos el bar Shakespeare en Lothain Road. Mi pareja y yo fuimos el domingo 31 de agosto a la calle solo para tomar un par de cervezas, terminamos almorzando allí. compañero tenía pastel de carne que era encantador, tuve el pescado con patatas fritas, que también era agradable. Nuestro camarero fue Alison que nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos. y dada la situación de covid, nos sentimos a gusto y no fue un problema en absoluto. Gracias chicos, nos vemos pronto. ????

Fui a tomar una copa en una noche tranquila, y un anfitrión se encontró con que no parecía tener idea de lo que estaban haciendo. No recibí un saludo ni nada, solo me dijeron que hiciera el seguimiento y rastreo y lo llevaron a una mesa y le dijeron que ordenara en el bar y eso es todo. Pedí un g & t, la fruta se veía repugnante y como si estuviera estallando. Nuestros vasos también estaban pegajosos. El personal parecía que no querían estar allí y decidimos ir a otro lugar después de nuestras primeras bebidas ya que el ambiente estaba muy apagado. El único miembro del personal que parecía estar haciendo algún esfuerzo por ser amable fue quien pensamos que era el gerente, pero solo entró cuando estábamos a punto de irnos, por lo que no fue suficiente para que nuestra experiencia fuera mejor que 1 estrella.

No me puedo quejar de mi estadía en Shakespeare's, nuestro camarero Kellie fue absolutamente encantador durante toda la experiencia e incluso nos permitió una cuenta y extender nuestra estadía en la mesa a nuestro conveniencia. Otro camarero Conor también fue muy agradable, además de traernos unas copas con prisa. Estancia muy agradable, y tengo la intención de volver.
