Visited cafe with a friend for lunch recently. I ordered the soup and it was very very thin and watery so I returned it. I reordered the falafel which took ages to come which meant that my friend had finished her lunch and I hadn’t even started mine! I was asked to pay the £3 extra with no concession to the fact that the soup was not acceptable. The falafel was deep fried with no dip and was also of poor quality but I ate some as we were running late. No apology given or refund offered......poor customer service and I won’t hurry back.

This wonderful cafe is a hidden gem situated on Lothian Road within the same building as the cinema. We had actually walked past it when a very kind elderly Edinburgh gentleman pointed it out to us and very grateful we are about that to! It is spacious, clean and gives easy access to those with mobility difficulties or wheelchair users. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is fresh and fabulous. We visited a few times for breakfast during our stay in the city and I can personally recommend the Scottish breakfast and Eggs Benedict! There is a fully stocked bar so on match day we were even able to enjoy a pint with our breakfast. Great place will definitely go back. Was even offered a complementary tea or coffee when my poached eggs had taken on a little too much water and were re done which shows good customer service x well done Filmhouse Cafe

I have been a regular here for more years than I can remember. It is the type of casual, relaxed place where you can sit on your own with a glass of wine and a book/magazine, or you can arrange to meet up with a group of friends who may all turn up at different times due to work/travel.The food is delicious, there is always a good selection of main meals and salads available including a lot of vegetarian options - my long-standing favourites are the Chickpea Curry and the Vegetable Lasagne which are both excellent. On my most recent visit I tried the Vegetarian Creole which I think is a newish addition to the menu - it was amazingly good, quite spicy, and very flavoursome. You order and pay for your food at the bar and they deliver it to your table. Usually the service is pretty fast. Sometimes it is difficult to find a table if you arrive in the half hour just before a film is due to start, but usually a table becomes free within a few minutes of waiting. They also sell a really good selection of wines by the glass, coffees/teas and cakes.

Sadly underwhelming breakfast experience. Basically a "wetherspoons" breakfast dressed up as something special by the addition of chopped chives (nice touch) but costing almost double. Ambience is somewhere between school common room and municipal library. Some might find it a refreshing throwback to a time before urban 'derelict' chic but as an arthouse cinema eaterie it feels like attention to the aesthetic of this place is long long overdue. Service was pleasant and prompt enough but there was a general lack of lustre in the details when completion in the city is so strong.

A friend suggested us meeting for a drink in the bar at the Filmhouse on Lothian Road as she was volunteering there at an Edinburgh Film Guild showing. Another friend also joined us there, as our original planned Easter Road location was going to be very busy due to the football match at home. The Filmhouse Cafe Bar turned out to be a very good venue, and we ate there rather than go out for curry as originally planned. I had a nice very veggie curry, my wife a dairy free fish dish and other friends pasta and soup I think. Everyone was very happy with their food, our friend who spends a lot of time in Italy enjoyed his pasta. The bar had a good range of real ales and continental lagers, as well of course as whisky, wines and soft drinks. While, as so common in trendy Edinburgh pubs, the ales were mostly a bit extremely hoppy for my traditional tastes, I did have a very nice pint of a beer another friend had recommended brewed only a mile or two away, and sampled a fine German lager. The cafe bar was very busy either just before a film started or one finished but we were able to get seats and it quietened down despite being a busy Sunday night in the city.

Reasonably priced (even more so if you sign up for a loyalty card which gives you a 10% discount), it's not the most comfortable but you don't visit here to sit for hours - you come for a quick drink or bite to eat before a film. The menu shouldn't be overlooked either - the food is good, there are healthy options and it isn't overpriced. We had a few meals here during a festival. The falafel plate was dry and overcooked. The filo parcels seemed stale. But the worst was the nachos. Ordered without jalapeños and it came loaded with them. Sent it back and another was brought out immediately. However on closer inspection it seemed they just picked them off as the plate was a mess. It tasted as well like it was made well before they were ordered as it was only luke warm and congealed. Place was a mess as well. Our table was sticky and covered in crackers. Counter service is friendly and plenty of 'earthy' choice mix for healthy vegetarian types. A nice chill place to have a beer or coffee, lunch or early evening dinner and not just for cinema-goers. Good place if you're on your own with a book or fancy an afternoon film in a traditional cinema.

When Oh When is the cafe itself going to be refurbished? It must be a health hazard. The chair covers are mouldering and starting to ingest themselves. Bits of the filthy looking carpet are worn away to nothing. How much effort would it actually take just to renew the flooring and get some second hand tables and chairs? Let's hope the kitchen is more hygienic. If it is a question of money can some rich film buff or actor please donate. On a positive note the strength of the coffee has improved though I don't think the taste is quite there yet.

The cafe / bar is being improved at present (feb 2015) but is still very popular for coffees and snacks, light lunches or pre film meals and drinks. Tables can be scarce at peek times but time it right and you can enjoy some peace from the hectic pace of the city. Recommended.

I really like this place, it is unassuming and a great place to catch up with friends at lunch time, maybe even have a glass of wine or a pint of beer with your lunch. They do daily specials, which are mostly homemade, soups, stews, curries etc, the food is always lovely, and very quick to arrive. The atmosphere is that of a little cafe, and people busy around, some reading, some catching up with friends, there are always children here and young and old alike. If you have time and are very hungry, take a friend, order yourself some nachos and a beer and chatter away until you burst.A great little place I like to go quite often.

Every time I watch a film here I find it hard to pass up on the filmhouse nachos. They must be some if the best in edinburgh. There are plenty of tasty dishes to choose from and more vegetarian options than most places. Sure it is a bit 'studenty' but that's part of the charm. If you want slick there are plenty of others places to go. This place is down to earth and egalitarian - a bit like its clientele.

Informal, friendly service, good range of good value hot dishes, snacks and drinks - great choice of wines. Can be busy, especially before/after popular films, but very convenient location for anything from a coffee to a meal.

Maybe it's because it reminds me of my student days, as the clientele are either students or at least used to be, or perhaps it's because it captures a great atmosphere whilst remaining safe, even on a Saturday night. Then again it could just be that the food is great. It's honest food, free from fuss. In fact it's great food disguised as simple student food. The service is also deceptively clever. You order at the bar and they bring it to your table, however no one asks you for a table number. They just know by looking at at you, that this is your order. As I say, it's genius and civilised. Eating at the filmhouse has the added bonus that even if the film is rubbish, I know the food will always be good.

This has to be one of the best cinema cafes in the UK. No plastic hot dogs or megabucks coffees here. A vast range of drinks - hot, cold, soft or alcoholic and all reasonably priced with 'llte bites' to die for. The bacon and hake chowder was deliciious as was the toasted ham and gruyere bagel but if I had the latter again, I would not have the wholegrain mustard on it, which to use an understatement was generous. Brought tears to my eyes even before I went in to see the movie!

Looking for a place to eat before a film, I had not thought about the Filmhouse. It was very busy and so you need to persevere to get a seat. Service was very good and they managed expectations very well - food arrived within the time quoted. Baked potatoes and fillings were excellent and all round - why go anywhere else?

My friend chose to eat her as she is vegetarian and visits here regularly as the veggie options are so good.I had a lamb and spinach masala from the specials which was superb. Lamb was tender and the sauce was spicy and tasty. The pint of Black Isle blonde I had was lovely and crisp. I even had a try of my friends chickpea curry which was also delicious. The place was busy for a Tuesday night but the service was prompt. A laid back atmosphere with a good selection of meals and snacks, catering to both carnivores and vegetarians. The only reason I've given four stars is the lay out of the cafe/bar is a little bit crammed and almost feels like a student union. A revamp would do wonders.

We have been going here frequently over the years, both before or after shows, and sometimes just as a place to meet. Lunch times (and during the day) tend to be quiet (even at weekends), but in the evenings it can get very busy and noisy. The trick is to wait for a film to start and lots of seats then vacate. This place is a firm favourite. Nice food, relaxing environment, no pressure for all in the party to eat and what to eat. The only gripe is that over the years the prices have increased quite substantially!

Love to take in a great movie and eat a good meal. Last time had venison bolognese, then chickpea curry and just had basque chicken. All really tasty. Love the food. Only bummer is no plugs for iPad and the beer is tres expensive.

I am a lover of chick peas in any form - hummus, felafel or even curried, so this place is for me. Accompanying salads ever a delight.

So sorry we chose this place as our lunch stop, the tea and coffee were acceptable but the sandwiches dreadful, should have complained but took the easy option scraped the soggy lettuce out plus most of the mustard there was far too much and ate the ham which was tasty plus the bread.Never ever again.

Staying In the City for the Festival we earmarked a film we particularly wanted to see and set out to collect our tickets and eat before the showing. We were delighted to find this excellent cafe within the building and our visit benefitted from the cheerful, unhurried atmosphere. A good range of foods for snack eating or main meals, friendly, efficient and cheerful staff. After booking another film we eat here again with the same enjoyment and will certainly call again next year at Festival time.

Generally love this bar/café but £8.50 for 2 pints of Black Isle lager! I'm sure it's been increased for the festival. Don't like fleecing and money grabbing - won't return again although we love the cinema, will just go elsewhere for a pre movie drink . . .

We ate here before seeing a movie and were delighted to enjoy freshly prepared, great food at a very reasonable price. I enjoyed a vegetarian dish of stilton and walnut nuggets, little crunchy deep-fried tasy models on a bed of salad with a garlic dip YUM! My companion had a delicious chicken curry. There is a sample menu on the Filmhouse website http://www.filmhousecinema.com/cafe-bar/

Popped in for a coffee with my wife. The service and atmosphere was amazing. The two girls serving were a delight and their names are Julia and Stella. Plus the coffee was excellent.

Steht nirgends. Also am Tresen bestellt. Es dauerte 50 Minuten für "fast food". Alles etwas klebrig, keiner hat gefragt, ob man noch etwas trinken möchte. Fish u Chips waren naja, Burger war ok. Insgesamt so gar nicht unser Ding.
