We visited this pub on 2 previous visits to Edinburgh and it was, as described, a cosy, traditional pub. Not any more. It seems to have become a hangout for students and was crowded, noisy and uncomfortable. The food was still very good, but we definitely won't be coming back.

It was a rainy day in July, and I had walked downhill from Edinburgh Castle and kept walking. I eventually got lost and my Google Maps said it could not help me. I called a cab and asked to be taken to the Cumberland Bar. Less than a mile later I was there. I needed a little refuge and Ewan, and his staff delivered. I was pretty much the only one in there that afternoon until I left so I had time to ask about the place and its history. It really is hidden away in a residential area, but it had a lot of rural charm. The ales on tap were admirable and I sat down for a little snack while I awaited my next move. It is a quaint place and going through a little renovation right now. It has a nice sunken patio and some cozy rooms. Check it out and settle in.

This 1 star is for the service. Place was empty and my daughter and I dropped in for a late lunch to eat outside. We were asked to leave unless I could prove my daughter was 5. I get this is a pub and they have a specific license. But my word and even my daughter telling them she was five is not good enough? I had her passport to prove it but this was so odd we ended up leaving. Not every place wants kids around but we were the only people there and were eating outside, it's not like we were disturbing the vibe

Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff but they really need to up their game when it comes to their Sunday roasts. I’d read reviews about wedges and thought surely they would have sorted that by now after reading their reviews. No. Soggy wedges and no other potatoes. Pretty poor. Saying that the lamb was tasty. NO HORSERADISH SAUCE for the roast beef which is a bit of a faux pas surely!! Had a lovely afternoon nonetheless and if they read and acted on their reviews it could easily have been 4 or 5 stars.

A bit of a trek and in the middle of an upscale neighborhood but a good stop for a pint. More of a modern, stylish interior compared to some of the rustic pubs in town. Barkeepers and waiters were dressed to match that vibe. Lots of cask handle but sadly only two were active during my visit. Enjoyed a Wee Heavy which is a style I hadn't tried in years. Visited a bit late but when this place is full and lively, I'm sure it's a lot of fun.

Great fun, great value and we've got a delicious, custom made bottle of gin to enjoy too.

Another bar that does not have bar stools......I am trying to understand why it seems like not many bars have seats at the bar anymore? A huge reason to go to a bar is to meet new people and talk to new people. Why does there not seem to be bar stools in bars? It makes no sense. Covid has been gone for over year now. Whenever I see a bar that does not have seats at the bar I have no desire to go in. I would love an explanation. Again a huge reason to go to a bar is to meet people. Deff a lot easier meeting people sitting at a bar striking up a conversation then going over to a table. Makes no sense. Can someone please explain this to me?

Went for a roast dinner with friends. Nothing on the plate was actually roasted. Menu said roast potatoes which you would assume was standard for a roast Sunday dinner. When it came all 4 plates had potato wedges, not roast potato’s. When I asked about why it was wedges and not potato’s I was told “that’s that it means by roast potato’s” it bit like the wedges where even done in a roast potato style. Just average soft non crispy wedges. Was not told when ordering about the non existent roast potatoes and obviously it was not that they had ran out. They just serve wedges, not roasties. Vegetables are boil in the bag. Not fresh. Yorkshire puddings 110% frozen, most definitely not made in house. Beef was tender but again, highly doubt it was fresh. Gravy was good for me but friends thought it was a salt overload. £18,95 so by no means cheap and to not even bother to make roasties or fresh veg is taking the p*ss. Nice bar staff. No complaints there but there is definitely a reason why the place was dead at 2pm on a Sunday. Would never return for a roast dinner 🙃 Worst roast dinner experience in over 25 years

The staff were really helpful and friendly to us. They were extremely nice and accommodating for everything. Fantastic! The food was hit and miss for our whole party, but was more hit than miss, truth be told. I had chicken and Haggis and both were lovely and flavourful! The decor feels a tad more dated than the food and staff would inply; the bloke's toilets could do with a slight revamp. Otherwise, a surprising treat hidden away.

First visit in three years and whilst the pub retains it’s character and the quality of the beer was excellent the standard of food has sadly dropped; the haggis bonbons were over cooked and the fish lacked any taste, had better from a chippy. Amazing gem in Edinburgh. We stumbled across this bar/restaurant prior to visiting. We struggled to book some other places due to the vast amount of visitors but this bar was able to accommodate us. It was a lovely warm traditional pub with friendly staff. The atmosphere was lovely, customers were very friendly and despite being busy, there was still a sense of space (something that is hard to come by in Edinburgh City during December!). We were comfortable at our table and didn't feel rushed. We ordered 6 starters and 6 mains and every meal was delicious and far exceeded the 'pub grub' we were looking for. We all agreed the meals were much nicer than some much higher end restaurants we had ate at previously and the prices were so cheap. We loved our visit, we have already recommended to many people (we were just here yesterday) and we were all in agreement we would go out our way to return whenever we come back to Edinburgh.

Great spot for a pint with wide selection of brews including some local. Location just a few streets away from the hustle and bustle of Princes St and therefore seems to attract more locals than tourists. Visited twice. First time, ordered Sea Bass and Fish and Chips. Sea bass was excellent! Fish and chips ok. Portions were very generous and prices reasonable. On the second visit, the restaurant was very busy as were all of the other restaurants. No local catch was left. Ordered Caesar salad and Mac and cheese. Unless you like a lot of dressing order it on the side. The staff was kind enough to bring out some extra greens to compensate for the overwhelmingly dressed salad. Note, freshly pickled anchovies are on top of salad. The mac and cheese was rich and delicious! Staff friendly and accommodating.

We dropped in for a beer at lunchtime, just curious to see the place that features so much in the "44 Scotland Street" books... the choice of beers was great and the menu looked fantastic, so we were tempted to eat a light lunch. Very pleasant traditional type Edinburgh pub which is a short walk from Princes Street area. Walk downhill down Dundas Street & after 10 mins or so you will see Cumberland Street where it is a couple of blocks down near the end. It was quiet when I visited which was an early afternoon on a Friday. Had a pint of the Belhaven 80s & a very nice tasty burger & chips for lunch which was good quality. Pub is a little larger than it looks from the outside due to a number of side & back rooms. Nice beer selection & decent pyb type menu. My type of traditional looking pub which is worth the short walk away from the city centre crowds & the walk back uphill if you are staying centrally which will sober you up. Recommended & I will return.

Nice little corner table by the bar which was stocked with many whiskies and a good choice of draught beer. Detailed woodwork and a history in the New Town add to the friendly ambiance with locals dropping in "for a pint" There was also a beer garden outside which looked good but very busy on the warm evening. Went back a few nights later for dinner. The staff were friendly and the menu had plenty of choices. The salmon salad was first class. I had Sausage and mash which was a huge helping. We wanted a quick pub lunch away from the crowds when we were through for the festival. I've been in Edinburgh many times and had never been in so headed down after reading reviews. It's a great looking pub, plenty seats, wee booths, a beer garden, nice choice of beer and very friendly staff. We said we were in for food, told to pick any table, handed menus and ordered drinks which were brought to the table. We ordered the schnitzel and a steak pie. The schnitzel was fantastic, covered in a great smoky cheese and bacon sauce. The steak pie at first glance was disappointing as it was a standard scotch pie case, however it was jam packed with tasty well cooked beef and a side jug of gravy was a nice touch. We asked for no green beans so the chef replaced with a wonderful mix of peppers and beetroot, again a nice touch. It's a place I'll definitely be returning to, hopefully when we've more time to enjoy a couple of drinks.

So to start we booked a table for 1.30 and walked into an empty bar, we asked to sit outside where there was a few more people but no rush at the bar. We went outside to find a seat and my girlfriend and her sister went to order our food and drinks at the bar. As i finished my pint we started to wonder where our food was ( simple order, 2 beef roasts 1 chicken). I checked my watch and the receipt to see it had been 45 minutes. So i went to the bar to ask where our food was. I was told there had been a mistake (not sure how since it was paid for so id had thought the till system would send it to the kitchen) and our food wasnt put through. The staff said sorry and told me 5 minutes, 10 minutes later still no food. So 1 hour after ordering and paying for food it arrives with a half arsed apology (nothing from the guy who made the error in the first place) and no mention of a complimentary drink or dessert which after an hours wait you'd expect something. When the food did arrive it was nice nothing special though definitely not worth a hours wait. If we hadnt paid at the bar when we ordered we would have just walked out.

Friendly neighborhood bar. Not a broad gluten-free selection, but they'll work with you, and the chef knows what he's doing. My daughter with celiac could eat a burger on gf bun and chips (cooked separate of gluten foods). GF beer on tap, and I think in bottle. GF cider on tap too.

Stopped in for a small bite as we weren’t very hungry. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating. I had the crayfish starter and my wife had the mini Mac’n cheese. Both were tasty. We also had a bottle of wine which we took half away with us. Would recommend if you are in the neighborhood. Pleasant!

Popped in for a coffee with my wife. The service and atmosphere was amazing. The two girls serving were a delight and their names are Julia and Stella. Plus the coffee was excellent.

My mum and son visited the restaurant on 6th July. Unfortunately, my mum took unwell and an ambulance had to be called. My son was extremely upset to see his grandma unwell but said the staff were absolutely excellent making my mum comfortable and supporting both him and my mum. They actually closed the restaurant whilst they waited for the ambulance and refused to take any money for the meal they had started eating. I want to say a massive thank you for the kindness shown to my mum and son, it really meant a lot. From what both my mum and son fed back, the staff were outstanding, fetching my mum cushions to make her comfortable and making cups of tea. You are all an absolute credit and so compassionate. Thank you so much.

We’ve been coming here every week for more than two years now so they must be doing something right! Great coffee, delicious sandwiches and home made cakes and friendly and efficient staff. Can particularly recommend the New Yorker sandwich, croque monsieur and the fudge brownies and carrot cake.
