I didn't dine in so this review is about a takeaway. Odd times I like to treat myself and I've been to the Shajan restaurant since the very early days when it was little more than a bungalow with my late wife. So being of an age where sometimes things are difficult I decided on a takeaway and ordered a takeaway I have had before, Lamb Sal Boti. When i got it home it looked awful and when I tasted it, it was. Half of it went in the bin, the sauce was watery and there was one large chunk of lamb in the middle plus other smaller lumps. After years of dining and takeaways at the Shajan will I go again? It will take a long time to think about it.

My family and I come here all the time and we love it so much! Staff are attentive, and the food is absolutely delicious. I usually stick to butter chicken, but maybe someday I’ll branch out! I especially love the generous portion of poppadoms and dips that they bring out. Can’t wait to come here again!

Went as a party of four first timers . Great atmosphere and quick service with Kingfisher / cobra / madri on draught . Very busy but we were seated quickly . I ordered the chicken pathia which was average but our friends orders of Chicken saag, chicken shahee were lovely . Bhaji and sheesh kebab starters were fine but not the best I have ever had . We will return and next time have poppudoms as a starter as they looked nice . All in all a nice place .

We were staying locally and wanted a takeaway We ordered a chicken madras, chicken dopiaza, naan and roti’s The chicken madras was perfectly fiery hot. My chicken dopiaza had a good kick to it too. Roti’s were a little dense & on the heavy side but it was an exceptionally good takeaway

Awful food, even worse customer service! Just finished a meal here with my husband and the staff spoke only to my husband for the whole meal to take orders, very strange! The food was bland and inauthentic and the service was absolutely appalling with rude staff who blank customers. I will tell everyone I know to avoid this place!

We arrived on a Friday night without a reservation and there was no trouble seating us. Drinks were brought over quickly, a long with chutneys and popadums. The chutney tray was not the best but alright. For starters we had chicken chat puri and they were okay. Didn't come with any salad which typically comes with Indian starters and was a little dry. For mains we had a pilau rice, peshwari naan, chicken shahi and lamb Balti. Both curry's had good quality meat, it was really tender. The flavours of the curries were unexpected and not close to shahis and baltis we have had at other restaurants. The Balti had a strong flavour of red peppers and was sweet and spicy. The shahi was heavy on the cumin and wasn't pleasant. The rice was awful, it tasted very sweet and of ghee. The we didn't touch it. The naan bread was soggy and even though it was full of coconut it had no flavour. It was closer to a supermarket naan bread that any I have ever been served at an Indian restaurant. The restaurant was clean and the service was quick, hence why it gets 2/5 otherwise it would have been 1/5.

Food was ok. Nothing special. The main issue was the service and the waiters. On arriving there was no welcome, hello, nice to see you etc, just a grunt and told to go to the bar to await the rest of our party. In the bar, nowhere to sit , no one takes your order or hands out menus. Eventually managed to bag a seat. Again no one asks if everyone here, do you want a drink, are you ready to order, zilch, nothing! We are then taken to our table , no menus on table, told the waiter we hadn’t even ordered yet! A young lad then stands at the opposite end of the table from where I was sat and was apparently asking if we wanted poppadoms, unfortunately the restaurant was so loud I’d no idea what he was saying. Someone just ordered one each! Our orders were eventually taken and on arrival the waiter again stood at one end of the table yelling what each course was and either throwing it in front of the customer or launching it into the middle of table, again we all struggled to hear what he was saying and he just seemed to get more and more angry! My curry was going cold on arrival with the oil separating from the sauce. On leaving we all said a cheery goodbye to be grunted at again. We will not be returning!

We have been coming here for years and have always had great food. Regularly get takeaways even though it’s a 20 mile round trip, however we absolutely won’t be recommending this place to anyone ever again! We had pre booked a table and when we got there the table was not ready so were shown to the bar area. The owner (older male) came to take our order around 15 minutes later from the bar area, to which we questioned why we can’t order at our table. He turned hostile and proceeded to tell us he had been working there for 31 years and he knows what he’s doing. His tone was condescending and we felt quite embarrassed. We asked for a little more time to order to which he accepted, but this earlier altercation left us feeling very uncomfortable and embarrassed so we quietly got up and left. The male chased us out of the restaurant telling us never to come back again. Whilst sat in the bar area, I overheard the way he was talking to other staff members and again it was rude, abrupt and supercilious.

We have been coming to this restaurant for years and unfortunately tonight is the last time we'll be visiting. Food was very tasty, as always. Service was on point. I ordered the same dish as I always do, tandoori mixed grill which the sizzler it comes out on is usually full, this time there was noticeably less, one piece of lamb, half the normal size of sheesh kebab and a very sorry piece of tandoori chicken. I ate the lot and normally I'd have leftovers to take home that I enjoy for dinner the next day. When I was finished and asked how our meal was, I explained it was delicious but a little sparse compared to the usual to be met with hostility from the owner, the older guy not his son may I add, in fact he was damn right rude! He said that all the chicken is the same size several times in a flustered manner and walked off. After sitting and finishing our drinks, I tried to speak to him again and told him i thought he was very rude and told him unfortunately i won't be coming to his restaurant again and he replied with "OK" Normally he's a polite chap but thus time he most certainly wasn't and unfortunately I won't be returning.

Shajan Indian Restaurant. Longsight Road, (A59) Clayton le Dale, Blackburn BB1 9EX Tel: 01254 813234 Date of visit 4th February 2024. I last visited this 210-seat establishment which can be found on the A59 between the M6 at Preston and Blackburn, over twenty years ago, and other than to remember that it was OK, I can’t remember much more and to say that it has been in existence for over thirty years, is testament to its attitude to good food and service. I must report that once again I have been thoroughly spoilt. With over twenty staff at front of house, and I’m reliably informed at least fifteen in the kitchen, rest assured you are well looked after. It was shortly after it opened on a Sunday afternoon when I arrived, and the place was filling up even then! The Shajan ticked a lot of boxes, there is a big car park, it is modern, clean comfortable and spacious. They take card or cash! They serve alcohol, they smile and chat to customers! Service is slick and attentive. The food is out there, or at least what I sampled ticked all the boxes. It was obvious that many of the customers this afternoon were regulars and on first name terms! I sampled the Poppadom’s with a very generous six portion pickle tray. Next up was a perfectly spiced sheesh Kebab, piping hot with a delicious salad and dip. This was followed by their recommendation, Chicken Banjara, cooked to madras strength , the flavour reminded me very much of the Satkorha Ghost that I enjoyed at the Morecambe Tandoori recently. A rich hot and sour flavoured dish, I tried to obtain the recipe to this dish but was told that ALL the recipes here are top secret, even the floor staff are not informed! This was accompanied with a tasty dish of light and fluffy Pilau basmati Rice and of course it would not be complete without a Peshwari naan. I have had better Peshwari naans to be honest. Now the piece de resistance was after the table was cleared the waiter came over and asked if I wanted a desert, after what I had just devoured, I declined but he then turned over the dessert menu and asked if I fancied a coffee? Which are listed on the back, I pondered for a minute and decided that I would have a Galic Coffee! Now that little trick gained his restaurant an extra six pounds to the bill. Now imagine if they all performed that little trick at every table and it might go a long way in understanding why this restaurant has stood on this site for over thirty years. It turned out that the waiter who’s name I did not obtain, is the nephew of Ali (Tops) owner of the Bangla Fusion in Much Hoole, Preston that was. (now Nellie the Elephant) But he knew everyone in the trade. A thoroughly nice lad with a sense of humour. So, as I said, this place ticked a lot of boxes not the cheapest in the world but come on, if you want service like this you must dip in to those pockets. It is for that reason it has been awarded 9.5/10 from me. I would recommend this restaurant.

Disappointed. This was our first visit here with friends, who come regularly. They even asked at the end of the meal was it a new chef as they order the same dish every time and this time they were not the same. The service and atmosphere is very good, but the food left a lot to be desired. I had the mixed starter it came out cold the seek kebab was like rubber and the Samosa was just soaked in oil and grease. The main courses came my wife ordered the half tandoori chicken with a sauce (£18) it came out with 2 legs, the waiter asked how the food was. I explained we did not get half a chicken, but 2 legs he apologised and asked if I wanted a breast to take home. Our friends main dish was very watery and they gave them the same dish to take home. I then went to pay, I again explained that the main course was not way I ordered and showed him the picture. He basically said well you wife ate it. Not good attitude. So unfortunately will not be going again. We may have just been unlucky, but at £130 we will not be taking the chance again.

Wow what an amazing place . We decided to go early so booked a table for 18h30, only to find on arrival that the place was absolutely heaving-and it didn’t take long to see why! Superb food - it had been a while since we had had a curry in the UK - and it did not disappoint! The onion bhaji and veg samosa starters were delicious as were our main courses- but the peshwari naan was rather dry - should have stuck with the plain one - our neighbours on the next table had one which looked delicious. Our only slight criticism was that we felt rather rushed as we were out within 1hr 15mins, and back in our rented accommodation by 8pm! Mais sauf que ça- un très bien finaledes vacances en Angleterre. Merci beaucoup

This was the first time we decided to have a family meal out on Christmas Day. We all like Indian food so, why not ? It was far cheaper than what you’d pay at a pub or English restaurant. It was absolutely packed when we got there, difficult to park in the large car park, a good sign that it’s very popular. We had booked so a nice welcome and asked to get drinks by the bar whilst they sorted our table out. After a short wait we were shown to our table, weaving through the many many customers. Although very busy we had a nice table with enough room around us. The owner was great, he explained the Christmas meal option, simply anything you like ! Any starter, any main, any rice, any sides, any naan, any dessert and coffee. You could have several sides if required. The staff were fantastic, very pleasant, very efficient and prompt service. The food was excellent and plentiful, all in the family were well satisfied with their various dishes. A thoroughly enjoyable Christmas Day dinner, will definitely do it again.

But the staff where all so friendly and on the ball. Really impressed. Other comments have been it’s been a rushed service and I can see how that comes across. But I disagree, the staff are just very on the ball and keen to do their job. If you wanted a break in-between courses you can just ask. Food was perfect as ever ! The best Indian restaurant in the area by far.

Have been to Shajan many times over last 20 years or so however I haven’t been for a quite a few years . We visited yesterday and the food was as good as always . Good quality and very tasty what I didn’t like and haven’t experienced before on my previous visits is the very rushed service . There was lots of staff working , they were very on the ball but not in a nice way . They were hanging around ready to pounce as soon as you put your cutlery down . Made us feel uncomfortable and ruined the experience. It has put me off going back there which is a shame as the food is really good . The service is probably to efficient but I personally feel it’s not effective

I’ve been going to this restaurant for a while now and food is always fantastic ! Thing have changed for me recently having been diagnosed with gastritis, I can’t eat Tomatoes, Onions, Red Meat , Spices or any thing remotely acidic ! As you can imagine it’s a Indian food lovers nightmare, so when my son said he wanted to go to the Shajan for his Birthday I had visions of me eating nothing other than a bowl of boiled rice, I decided to call them and see if they served anything that I could eat, they listened to my dilemma and offered to make me something special off menu ! The night came and I was presented with a delicious chicken and potato dish that they had prepared overnight for me and that I never dreamed I could have, no side effects at all. Absolutely brilliant customer service, and I for one can recommend that if you get chance you go to the Shajan ! 💙

I’ve been a couple of times to this venue and the food was good but couldn’t help notice the crumbs on chairs, dirty floors and shabby and dirty toilets. Service was ok but not particularly friendly. Owners: pay attention to the details!

We were disappointed. We came here for a nice double date with friends we hadn’t seen for months. My boyfriend accidentally knocked over his pint and no staff came near for a good few minutes so it was dripping everywhere. We told the staff and the man just threw a load of cloths at us... like we are paying for a service and you want us to clean it ourselves? We were given 7 popadoms when we asked for 8, we are also charged for 8. My curry had a hair in it so I felt sick instantly, they made me a new one but it tasted totally different so I think it was a different curry, but I felt sick by this point and barely ate any of it anyway. The waiter said “extra garlic” is good for the nann breads and wrote it on without asking us, yeah they tasted good but we was actually charged for extra bloody garlic !!!Was very disappointed with the service we received and the food wasn’t great either. Would not return.

GF likes here as the chicken liver pate and accompanying pizza garlic bread also hit the spot. So there ended up a couple of those on the table plus a king prawn ginger starter. All OK. Mains a bit more disappointing especially the Sunday Roast Beef. Thin tough slices of beef served with their basic veg that they serve with their other dishes. No effort there. The Madeira pork was nice and GF enjoyed her fettuccine paradiso. Couple of desserts - one someone’s second sundae of the weekend and the other a decent crème brûlée. £36 for a bottle of standard Soave is outrageous and I have to say the place lacked any atmosphere and the staff any warmth.

This was not our first visit to the Calf’s Head but it has to be the best meal we have ever had. It was a large family gathering and despite the size of the party the service was friendly and efficient. Looking forward to a return visit, hopefully not in the too distant future.

Great food, great service, reasonably priced. Would recommend. I ordered the ox cheek pie and husband ordered the fish and chips which were both lovely, being really picky the mash were a bit on the dry side, but I would still recommend.

Turned up at about 8.50am on Easter bank holiday Monday. Had checked the website before hand. It said open at 8am. So we went along. 4 of us. Three adults and a 2 year old. Got to the door, which was open. Was told “we open in 10 minutes” we asked if we could sit inside for that time (because it was a bit chilly outside) but the dark haired girl said she was doing the cashing up so no we couldn’t. I was there with my daughters and a 2 year old. We were hardly going to rob the place. Plus, it turned out when we got inside that this was a building with a very open communal seating area which she could have let us sit at for 10 minutes. We ordered our food. I asked if there was any juice for kids (the 2 year old) - the dark haired girl working said “only what we’ve got in the fridge”. I said “don’t you have any orange juice or anything like that?” The reply being - “only what we’ve got in the fridge” which was those pretentious glass bottles of 1930’s fizzy pop (the brand that does stuff like dandelion and burdock). I bought two bottles of “Orange and Mandarin” thinking they weren’t fizzy. They were. More fool me. Basically Tory Fanta. Anyway. I went and sat down with my older daughters and my 2 year old son. My daughters ordered avocado on toast with salmon. I had a full English being the uncouth soul that I am. I asked if they have a kids menu for my 2 year old. The answer was no. I ordered him beans, one sausage and some scrambled eggs. I was told this could be done from the side menu, that alone cost £7.50. The beans, sausage and eggs came out on the same plate as one of my daughters breakfast. We had to guess that was the case (not mastermind but still ridiculously daft that they’d do this) we had to ask for a plate for my 2 year old who was in a high chair. Anyway. Another family came in about the same time as us. Low and behold another of their staff bought out two huge glasses of orange juice for them. So they did have other drinks available. My full English was ok, but it wasn’t great. The bacon was burned. It wasn’t crispy like the menu says. It was burned. So if the proprietor/owner wants to reply to this with a clever comment. The bacon was burned. Also, the poached eggs were COLD. And I don’t mean not quite warm, they were cold. We were the first people in, the place wasn’t busy and somehow I was served cold poached eggs. I’ve re read through the menu tonight before writing this review. Whenever I choose a place to eat again I’m always going to look for the word “Artisan” because that to me, on the whole means not very good. The “Artisan” toast I received was just sliced bread, but toasted. They even claim to have an “Artisan” Brioche bun If you look up the definition of “Artisan” in the dictionary it says. a person or company that produces something (such as cheese or wine) in limited quantities often using traditional methods —often used before another noun artisan breads I don’t think that you can claim that obviously pre sliced bread or even a Brioche Bun is “Artisan”. There’s too many mediocre cafes/restaurants who have latched onto this word and used it. The company website claims “We focus on quality and sustainability above all, which extends to everything we do. From our suppliers to takeaway packaging, we carefully select each element keeping you and the planet in mind. We support local, and well-being of the community is at the heart of what we do.” This is nonsense. My daughters asked for some tap water, they were pointed towards one of those fancy upside down glass water bottles, and plastic cups, plastic lids. Lots of plastic. They had paper straws. I don’t know about you, but if you want to be really sustainable, if someone asks for tap water, give them a glass of tap water in a glass. Zero plastic, zero waste. To finish up. Pros - pretty pattern on the coffee. Cons - Really incredibly gormless staff; bad cook who can’t even cook bacon or keep a poached egg warm; rude; not child friendly as no kids menu even at weekends/bank holidays (although there was a couple of high chairs). As you can imagine I will never be going back to this place. I’ve given them two stars because my daughter liked the swirly pattern on the top of her Flat White.
