One of my colleague's bought some food into the office - Veg samosas, meat samosas and pakoras and they were so tasty, so I had to go down to Shahenshahs myself they had a variety of Indian snacks/curries and sweets. I went for a mix of Samosas, onion barji, aloo tiki and a selection of veg and meat curries. I got all of this under £25. The food was amazing. I know where I will be going when I have my next party. Would definitely recommend.

Many Sikhs and Hindus as per religious beliefs do not eat halal meat as it is forbidden for them. Strangely the shop displays Sikh religious imagery which usually denotes that food is not halal. The shop has not made any obvious efforts to declare the meat is halal, so it is quite misleading to customers. It's fine if a shop wants to serve halal meat, but customers should not be misled.

I have been visiting the Shahenshah ever since I was a child, living 3 streets and growing up on their potato cakes(!) I've visited when I can over the years, and the snacks and sweets have always been consistent and delicious. It is down-to-earth, good value for money, and has efficient and polite service. They are also a great option to cater for a party. I recommend the pakora (with the red sauce!) They also seem to help the local community from news on the notice board. THANK YOU - hope you are successful for the next 30 years :)

I have been a customer of Shahensha for some time now. The food is really nice, traditional vegetarian or with meat and not too expensive. I have eaten in the shop at the few tables they have or mostly had takeaway. I have also ordered larger quantities for entertaining at home.I would definately recommend anyone to try this place.

I have been a big fan of Shanshars for a long time. Their vegetable samosas, Jelena, karfi and vegetable curries are second to none. I also like the mango Rubicon they sell, which the big supermarkets, Sainsburys/Tesco's don't stock. Five stars all round from me!

I write this review combining all the times I have visited. I go here when I miss simple home cooked food, yet it never hits the spot. There is always something or another. Customer service is a bit robotic. The aloo tikkis and paneer pakoras don't have much flavour and could do with more spices added to them. The chutneys are kept outside rather than being refrigerated and there have been occasions where they have been off. The price for the savoury snacks is fair but I wouldn't say that for all items. The parathas are average - they charge you more if you ask for extra stuffing but even then there isn't enough added. Again you ask for extra butter, they charge you for that - it would be cheaper to go across the road and get a bar of butter than to keep paying for the tiny pat slivers they give. The one good thing is that at least when the parathas are served they come out as they are made. They could do with more filling and flavour for sure though. The sabzis of the day in the fridge are always bland and not always fresh. I cannot comment on the other curries on the menu as I have never ordered them. This place is cafe not a restaurant as it is often described as.

Service is efficient and friendly and the food delicious, what more could you ask for. Highly recommended!!!

We have visited this excellent, small, family run restaurant hundreds of times over very many years. Other than being very satisfied long-term customers of Shahenshah, we have no link with the restaurant at all... nor are we using this review to try to point potential customers to other Indian restaurants in Derby! Quite how Shahenshah isn't rated as the top Indian restaurant in Derby is beyond me. The food quality is excellent, the service is perfect, it is clean (5 star reviews from the local Council). I have never been short changed by any 'fellow' at Shahenshah. When I have wanted specific food ata ShahenshahI have asked and been given it - or been told that it isn't available. Equally, I haven't invited the cooks to guess what I wanted and then complained when they didn't guess right! Like many very good Indian restaurants in many cities, Shahenshah is located in a busy, vibrant 'Inner-City' area. Parking is free next to the restaurant - literally right next to it. With patience parking spaces can always be found. This is an outstanding restaurant that doesn't deserve some of the comments from recent reviewers in my humble opinion.

Our friends always rave about this place and i am at a loss to understand why. We ordered a vegetable korma and a chicken tikka korma. They were out of chicken tikka, fair enough, that happens but then the food was offered cold, to heat at home. When we got it home we discovered that both types of korma bore no resemblence to a korma. It was fiercely hot and did not look creamy but more like a tomato based dish. It was so hot that we had to add it to copious quantities of yoghurt. The veg paratha was a disgrace..paper thin and scorched. I think £6.50 is way too pricey for food that is not as described, poor quality and that you have to heat up yourself, using your own electricity or gas and having to then wash all the pots and pans as well. I do not expect to cook my own takeaway at this price !! I am not sure if it is supposed to be a restuarant as it looks more like a delicatessen. The samosas were cheap, 30p but contained only potato and nought else. The previous times i have eaten their food were no better and i wish my friends would stop making excuses for this place and find a decent indian restuarant/ takeaway instead.

Shahenshah is located in a rough part of town and forget parking if any of the nearby mosques are at their busiest prayer times. But if you get a chance, the mityai (indian sweets) are brilliant. There are a good selection of barfi and ladoos and cold milk dumplings in syrup (gulab jamon). The vegetarian savoury takeaway food (samosas, pakoras, spring rolls) is hit and miss; the seasoning and spice is sometimes spot on and other times it is bland. At times those dishes don't appear to be fresh and the taste and texture of the pakoras can be a bit off (stringy texture if you break it apart). The meat and chicken kebabs are good and there is a choice of mint and tamarind sauce. If the vegetarian savouries were consistent then it'd be a four star review. If everything was as good as the mityai then it would be a five star review.

Great little takeaway / café. I've never eaten in here but it's always busy and the food on the plates looks great. I come here for a take-away every time I'm in Derby to visit family. The curries are fantastic, particularly the lamb dishes as it's so soft it just melts. The starters are great, particularly the Karillas which I've never seen anywhere else...at least not in Scotland. The samosas are the best I've had and the kebabs are great too. Soon I will have to try the vast array of sweet dishes which always look so good.Derby is a long way to come from Dundee for Karillas and Lamb Madras but it is so good. I've been using this family run gem for many years now, my god t's over 25 years I think. My kids grew up demanding to be taken out for 'red chicken', Tandoori chicken being their intro to spicey food.I went again recently with colleagues from work, whilst it has obviously had redecoration it's exactly the same, the same wide range of authentic indian foods, snacks and sweets, the same patient tolerance of staff being asked 'what's that', the same friendly atmosphere with a mix of customers that represent's Normanton's rich cultural heritage.. The quality of the food remains consistent, whether cooked or warmed to your taste. When the locals are using it, you know it has to be good food and good value; and then there's the sweets, oh the sweets, my legendary sweet tooth is in it's element here, top quality Indian sweets and a huge variety at that.It is an experience I would recommend to any spice lover.

I' ve Been eating here for years. Good service, friendly enough but no chat. Was always a cafe with prices to match. Despite the revamp I think prices now are expensive for what it is. I cannot fault this place. I usually order by phone and then go and collect. You can order food hot or cold for you to warm through later. There is a good selection and dishes can be selected from the trays or can be cooked fresh. The food is excellent quality, authentic and is not heavy like some Indian dishes I have had from other places. The ingredients are good quality and the portions very generous. The samosas are large perhaps double the size of supermarkets and much lighter and crispy.Prices are extremely reasonable between £4.50-£6.50 a dish and servings are large. Chutney and sauce is usually given complimentary. My favourite order has to be the lamb Biryani and Aloo Gobi- I have never had better. The staff are polite and friendly and if you like you can eat in, there are 4 or 5 tables. The atmosphere is nice with Indian Music but is much more casual than Indian restaurants as reflected by the price don't expect tablecloths and napkins! However food is served to your table along with a jug of water and the environment is relaxing. The only difficulty I have experienced at Shahenshah is getting parked, it is on a main road and it is not always easy to find a space.Actually, I wish they would do delivery as this would perhaps stop me from over ordering as every time I go I always get tempted by something I see and am just too greedy to resist.

I've been a loyal Shahenshah customer for what is approaching 2 decades and my Dad regularly buys take out for which the standard of SAVOURY food is acceptable given the low price. However, I made the mistake of eating in with my wife. We ordered at the counter only to be served microwaved food from behind the counter at inflated prices for the Starter. No plates served with the Starters or salad garnish either just 2 spring rolls heated up on a plate. The main was butter chicken, authentic north Indian taste but no soul, especially when we learned the sauce is pre-made and they just fry chicken in more oil and add add the buttery curry sauce until it's hot to serve. Also they have oddly announced they no longer accept card payments too. I will be taking my business to The Chestnut Tree Pub & Restaurant as they charge the same but cook fresh to order, serve with fresh salad and at the same price point and they are pleased to greet you and see you off. Whereas in the Shahenshah the two young men are glued to their phones and would clearly rather be somewhere else than to greet or thank you! I left Shahenshah disappointed and would urge others to think twice before dining in.

I have been using the Shahenshah for Veg Samosas for years. I was always taken by the sight of the dishes of the day in tureens on the counter. it feels more like a community shop than a takeaway. Decided to try it for lunch with a friend as a convenience after visiting the Falstaff nearby. For a very reasonable price we had chili chicken, spicy aubergine with potatoes and a couple of chappati served simply in dishes. Carafes of water are provided on the tables. The guy behind the counter was very helpful and friendly when I was ordering. The food tasted really good but the meat seemed just a bit fatty. [can you have fatty chicken?] For what this place is, a simple cafe and takeaway, overall we had a very enjoyable experience and I look forward to visiting again to try more of the veggie options.

We come here when we visit the nearby Paks Supermarket and it's become a bit of a favourite of ours after a couple of visits. It's not the most stylish of places, but it does great food and is always good value. We usually have the Balla or Papdi chaat to start with and they're always very tasty. The sauces are very flavoursome and we always want to eat more. For a main dish, we tend to go for the chilli paneer and the bindi, both of which are really great - especially the chilli paneer. The spices are very tasty. The rice and chapatis are very good, with the breads in particular tasting very fresh. We sometimes have the sweet lassi, but this can be too filling and so we tend to prefer to stick to tap water, which is freely offered. Overall, this is a great little place. We've never tried the sweets on sale, although one day I'm sure we will. The service is very friendly and prompt. Excellent value for money and somewhere we always like visiting.

The veg samosas and pakoras are the best I've ever tried, and the value is incredible. When we lived in Nottingham we used to make special trips just to stock up on everything; now we've moved to Derby, it's hard to stay away! Massive selection of beautiful food, great service and great value.

The best samosa in the city. Good quality food, lovely taste, and a good variety to choose from. Nice friendly atmosphere, and helpful staff. I always get samosa if I am passing, and often tempted to have aloo tikki, and some bhaji . I come here for the quality of the food, but when you come to pay, not only best tasting food, but at the best price.

We have been going to Shahenshah for years now. Everytime we are in Derby, we make an effort to visit this place and it never disappoints. There is so much food on offer and at such good price too, you really cannot ask for more. Great chilli paneer and chaats; must try if you haven't already.

Arguably the best samosas I've eaten and so cheap too.Any time we have a gathering, or a homemade Indian, we go to Shahenshah for samosas and other snacks.Warning - once you've tried them, all supermarket bought ones will seem mediocre!

Have been coming here for 20 years. You can eat for hardly anything and all the food is tasty. The tandoori fish and chicken is great. When the spring rolls are fresh, nothing can beat them. If I had one criticism it would be that the samosas and spring rolls are sometimes not as fresh as they should be. But overall magnificent value and quality. If you spend 30 pounds you will come out with food enough to feed 5 people.

Shahenshah is still the best Indian food in Derby. The prices, service and quality of food is amazing. We visit very regularly and are never disappointed. Highlights are: (anything) chaat... aloo tikki, samosa, pakora etc etc. The daals are great too. Mattar panir is always superb. I can't wait for our next visit (which will be very soon!)

Been eating here for many years and seen the place change considerably over the years. The rickety Formica tables replaced by glass-topped ones and the serving counter revamped and improved. There's always a stream of locals queueing at the counter for takeaway food. That all said, you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Vegetarian food is good, but some of the meat cuts used in chicken and lamb dishes are a bit fatty, gristly and low quality. But that's reflected in the price.Their takeaway portions are big and come in sealed plastic containers - ideal for putting in the freezer when you get home.

Visited whilst staying at a local hotel. Found us a table despite not booking. Food was great however there seems to be no flexibility on portion size or kids meals. Ended up ordering a starter as a main with shared rice!

Poor. Food was flavourless, poppadoms were stale. Tandoori chicken has no flavour and is over cooked. Disappointing.
