Most of the staff clearly do not know the difference between a flat white, a latte, and a cappuccino as they are all made with flat hot milk no matter what you ask for. No froth or foam or latte milk. The coffee is not cheap enough to be this bad.

I had an appointment at Ninewells today. Having worked out where my appointment was, I decided to buy a tea and snack from the Segafredo cafe in the Ninewells entrance as I was hungry. There wasn't much on offer so I bought a tea and a Fudge Doughnut. The latter was in a clear plastic package, which obscured sight of the product. It cost £1.75. The Fudge Doughnut turned out to be the most disgusting bakery item I had ever had the misfortune to try and eat. I tried to scrape off the sickly thick layer of fudge on the top, but it was still disgusting. It turned out it had a custard filling. The doughnut was overdosed in sugar and calories. Notably, one can buy doughnuts in lots of shops and cafes that are not disgusting to eat, rather they are enjoyable to eat, but not at Segafredo. Given that Ninewells is a hospital, with people there for treatment, not for a trip out, one might expect that the products on offer would be healthy products, with relatively low calorie and sugar content, not maxed out on sugar and calories. When I complained to the staff, they said they were from a local bakery business and the ingredients were noted on the packet. I recognise that the product purchasing decisions are made by managers, typically not based locally, which is why the staff are so defensive. Does Segafredo have such contempt for their customers, that they think it's Ok to serve up disgusting products?

Having a family member taken to hospital for a serious condition staying there most of the night and Into afternoon. Safe to say that cups of tea and a toastie was in order. I chose a cheese and tomato toastie and at over £4 I got an unbuttered slice of bread with 3 thin slices of tomato on it. I cannot find anything at all that resembles a bit of cheese !!! Absolute daylight robbery. And having waited for 15 minutes it wasn’t that hot. See attached photo

I knew about this cafe from the last time i came to Ninewells, as i had time on my hands during waiting to do my paperwork, and although you get a tray for your purchase, for hot food the staff will bring it over. The Second time i only had time for a coffee and a Bacon Roll before my Extraction, but i would not want to keep coming to 9Wells as it is very Cramped.

After a lengthy hospital appointment with my elderly Mother we made the mistake of thinking we would have a pleasant light lunch ..sadly no !!a lukewarm mug of coffee at just short of £3..a toasted sandwich consisting of 2 slices of bread !! or better description would be 2 slices of cardboard containing a boiled egg.. no butter!!! unable to cut with plastic knife provided ..When complained we were informed that butter isn’t used on any of the toasties at a cost of £4 Mr Esposito is making a fantastic profit .. We should have abandoned the idea from the minute we nicely asked member of staff if she would mind cleaning the dirty table and met with a disgusted look .. Never again.

Handy to have a cafe in the entrance to a major hospital - such a pity it seems to have a monopoly. We were lured into the cafe by the 'buy a filter coffee or tea with a bacon roll for £3.25. After a long delay at the counter we were served. My wife and I each tried the bitter filter coffee, but did enjoy our bacon sandwiches. Our grandchildren each chose a small 250 ml drink; one had Tropicana orange and the other Copella Cloudy Apple. To accompany their drinks one chose a regular sized bag of crisps and the other chose a fudge doughnut. The total bill came to over £15! We discovered that we had been charged £2.60 for each juice drink. The staff seemed disinterested when I expressed my surprise at the cost of our snack. Next door is a WH Smiths where you can buy 300ml bottles of Tropicana Orange and Copella Cloudy Apple juices for £1.89. Apart from the fact that this cafe is conveniently situated I can't find any other reason to recommend using it.

Visited a few times recently always 'greeted' by staff completely uninterested by serving us. Today however I was told that I could not buy a ham roll and 2 bottles of water to sit in as they had come from the takeaway fridge ( which is situated within the same cafe!!) Asked if I could have a ham roll from the correct part of the cafe only to be told they have none! Having worked in the service industry for almost 40 years I am amazed that this place still functions. However I suppose because they have a captive audience they feel they can do what ever they want. Best advise I can give is bring your own sandwiches and a flask of your own coffee. It will certainly be better than they serve there.

I purchased a take away coffee, went to a clinic returned and ordered food. In reference to my take away coffee, whilst waiting at a table for food, I was told that I must, "get rid it"! Absolutely shocking when buying food too.

We bought 2x teas from this cafe to take away and came back to this cafe after our appointment in the hospital to order food. We still had our EMPTY take away cups in our hands from before and one member of staff approached me to say we were not allowed to sit in as we had take away cups and was rude about this. I explained they were empty and from earlier then found a table as we were ordering again. ANOTHER member of staff then came back over and rudely shouted that we were not allowed the cups and caused a scene over empty take away cups! I EXPLAINED AGAIN that they were from before and were empty, Staff very unprofessional, rude and caused a scene over empty take away cups!! Shocking service!

At 9wells as my mum is very poorly. Managed to get to the cafe to get her out of the ward and a break from hospital food. Two juice One coffee 2 bacon rolls 1 panini 3 cakes £25!!!!!! Papa joes feeds four of us proper meals for £24.00!! Absolutely ridiculous, this cafe knows they have the monopoly as some people aren't allowed out, or relatives can't/won't leave incase something happens and they prey on this vulnerability! I'm disgusted!! If she's up to it we will be visiting the staff cafe in future!! And the girl on the checkouts constant smirking as we asked her to check the price twice!! STAY AWAY!!

This busy self service café offers standard café fare, seating is limited, staff are cheery in spite of working under pressure most of the day. Take away drinks and cakes are an option.

Had white coffee and a chocolate muffin. Coffee was not that special and I have tasted better but the muffin was tasty although it was in cellophane wrapper so don't think homemade. All in all wouldn't hurry back

My visit was to the gallagher retail park Dundee, must say it was the worst bacon roll I’ve had in my life and I’m almost 80. Bacon was barely cooked and riddled with fat and they charged £4.95 Total disgrace,it’s not rocket science to make a descent bacon roll, they should be ashamed

Let’s begin by saying the girl with fake tan should not be working behind the bar, had to take my own and my partners coffee back up as there was fake tan all over the outside of our cups unfortunately I did not catch the girls name but I think she was the manger on shift. For the price we payed for coffees we left there so dissatisfied.

So people are asking why this place closed, as it's quite rightly got great reviews for staff service, food, coffee, and general vibe. This was my favourite spot to have a quiet coffee or meet people for a light lunch in Dundee. Basically, the story is that the owner shafted a pregnant employee the day after she went on maternity. He "fired" her and refused to pay her maternity. The staff, having apparently been paid not that great already which is testament to their professionalism given the quality of service, walked out in protest. This was late Spring when the hospitality industry seemingly had ten job vacancies for every candidate, so they rapidly just found other work and Birchwood's workforce simply evaporated overnight. Word got out on Facebook and, especially given the prices, ignited a general boycott of the place through the outrage. I'm unsure if the employee ever did get her *legally required* maternity pay. The last that was being said was that the owner had not only blocked her number, but also HMRC's! A lesson in how a lovely place can come crashing down through the sheer greed of its owner.
