Friday night feast. Pre-booked a table online for 2 people. Saints game on the TV. Arrived on time, seated immediately in a great spot. Ordered drinks from Matty, took a look at the menu and ordered grub. Nachos to share for starters. Mains of Chip Shop platter for Mrs James and a Foot Long Fave for me. Starters served in good time, tasty too and a good size portion. When finished we were then asked when we were ready for mains to be served which was a nice touch. When they were served they were ace, both were presented brilliantly and looked good on the eye, taste was grand too. In these COVID crazy times there was nothing to fault. A COVID secure bar, clean, tidy, plenty of hygiene stations around the bar and all customers respecting the rules. Great food, drinks and service. An enjoyable night out in these difficult times. A legendary pub in good hands. Thank you Matty and the team.

I wondered what things would be like with the many restrictions and regulations forced upon pubs. I needn't have worried, the Sefton Arms must be number one in the St Helens' area for following the rules and keeping the customer's happy. Staff are always polite and helpful, (all except the most recent times when there were some new faces, who seemed really panicked and a bit unsure of things, and I had to wait over 5 minutes and still nobody took my order, despite being passed a dozen times. I ended up re-downloading and ordering via the My Pub App. Despite that hitch, the other times have all be spot on so I think probably just a one-off.Anyway, beer was really good and the food delicious as ever. Really can't fault this place at all.

Asked the girl at the door doing test and trace at 6.45pm if they were still doing food and she said because food stops at 7pm she doubted it but ask. Rebecca behind the bar when I asked just repeated it stops at 7pm. Yes but the girl at door said she doesn't think you still serve repeated 'food stops at 7' three times

Matty went out of his way to get the three of us a table as I hadn't booked and it was busy. A smashing young lady and young man brought our drinks to the table and the place was spotless, tables being cleaned on a continued basis.I am a fairly regular customer and for my money its a good town centre pub. Very well run, good beer and decent food at fair prices.

Just back from a Sunday lunch with friend. We ordered beef and chicken dinners. Micro mash. Micro beef/chicken. Micro veg. Beef like rubber. Chicken rubbish quality. Nearly went to subway... Also 9.49 ? Way overpriced. Ladies toilets very dirty. Faeces on tiles in last toilet ? Really not good at times like these. Complained on the way out. We wont be back. Save your money and eat somewhere else

I came back to St. Helens for a week's visit (as I now live 'darn sarth') and took my mate to the Sefton Arms for something to eat. I'd been before but this was his first time in St. Helens. I told him the food was excellent and we weren't disappointed, it was up to it's usual top class standard. A guy(who I assume is the manager) was stood by the door and asked for one of our names (due to covid) then pointed us to a table. It was nice and quiet in the pub, which was really nice. I ordered at the bar and the drinks were with us within minutes. The food came not long after and was ip to it's usual high standard. My mate had a burger and I had the fake steak pie and they were both delicious. The portions are very generous too. I went in again yesterday, this time with my son and his mate and, again, we had food and drinks and, again the service and food was 100%. I would recommend the Sefton Arms to anyone. The food is lovely, the service is excellent and the staff are always nice and friendly. I can't wait to go again!!

We called in the Sefton Arms for lunch. The town centre pub is large and has only just been refurbished. The seats are comfortable and the bar staff are good at their job and are eager to serve you with a smile. The real ale is kept well with a good choice of beers. We ordered the steak pie and a pint off the menu.It came with a large microwaved pie , microwaved mash , and microwaved peas and carrots. The pie had some lumps of steak in it with a consistency of chewing gum.The pastry base was glutinous and hopefully hasn’t stuck my colon together. The peas and carrots were microwaved from frozen. The gravy was so thick even when I turned the gravy boat up side down it was reluctant to come out. Here is a couple of photos of the offending meal.

We wanted to do something nice but not too over-the-top for a friends 50th Birthday. Manager, Matty, really pulled out all the stops to make it a really great night. The service, attention to detail and customer appreciation really was first-class. Nothing was too much and many commented what a great night they'd had and how fantastic the staff were. We have a lot to be thankful for having the Sefton on our doorsteps. I've always been a big fan but it has gained many more after such a brilliant night had by all. If you're after something low-key but want a really enjoyable night with fantastic service and staff then look no further than the Sefton. Thanks Matty and all your hard-working staff. We'll be back!

I enjoyed coming here before the refurb but now, after the near million pound clear out...I love this place more. This place is perfect for the solo drinker (lots of nooks and crannies to hide away in...and a massive bar to stand and talk rubbish to the overly tolerant bar staff). Perfect for couples...and small groups alike...for the same reason. Also great for large families or groups...with a few big tables seating between 8 and maybe 20 at a push. The landlord has done wonders with this place and the guy, Matty, appears very aloof but he's turned this pub into a gold mine...and staff turnover seems to be almost zero....sign of a great manager. This pub is now at the heart of St Helens and I enjoy it (albeit sparingly now). As for the food....it is decent pub grub too...not five star but you get what you pay for and a little bit more

Went to Sefton a few weeks ago - please see my last review - and was well satisfied - on the strength of that visit went for Lunch again, this time with 4 family members - they ordered fish and chips - when it came it was looked bad and the unanimous verdict was the meal was terrible - I ordered the Gammon- took ages to come was cold and an egg short - sent it back - came back with second egg but cold again - complained again but it was all to late in the day - l was embarrassed and safe to say none of mine will listen to my recommendations in future - great pity but honestly it was awful - Sefton to hit and miss - recommend either Running Horses or Lilys for quality and value

The Sephton 25th July. Decided to call in for Lunch after shopping in Town - Gammon for me and Lasange for " Her Indoors " Waited about 25 mins before being advised by the Manager that due to some issues the kitchen was slow to get the food out - although annoying it was good that he knew we were waiting and instead of ignoring us apologised and offered us a drink - Food came ten minutes after but was worth the wait - large piece of Gammon, not to salty and well cooked - onion rings especially good - lightly battered, not greasy, far better than the usual dry breadcrumb ones that have become the standard - Lasange very tasty indeed - Sefton recently refurbished, tastefully done, cosy but light and airy - last time we went in the gents was minging but now pristine. A good selection of beers avalable - all in all a good experience despite the wait - menu items I think slightly more expensive than Witherspoons but Sefton beats it for comfort an ambience- will be back - recommended.

Six of us decided to go here for tea, a bit of pub grub and a couple of cheeky drinks after a hard day at worked seemed like an excellent idea... however, whilst the staff were fine, the food arrived in an ok time, the latter was damn awful and that was for each one of us. We did think they couldn't go wrong with pudding, after all it was a cookie one with ice cream... wrong, a cold dessert arrived on a hot plate, they had warmed the cookie, the so called marshmallows had been burnt to a crisp, we couldn't get our spoons through AND it was served with a lemon sorbet (that had melted) rather than ice cream. Honestly it was dreadful. so PLEASE guys and gals, take your custom, cash and appetites elsewhere! For what we paid, Nando's or the Pizza Hut is much better and satisfying!

It's always tricky organising a Christmas party - you can't please everyone. Well it just goes to show that you can. I brought 30 staff to the Sefton last night and every single one of them have been so complimentary and rightly so. We were so well looked after by Matty and his staff who put an awful lot of effort into making it just right for us, from the food to the entertainment it really was spot-on. Unfussy, cheap and pretty cheerful, the Sefton has reverted to being just a proper boozer after a few attempts at youthfulness. Now the old blokes are back and you might be lucky enough to meet a few of the surviving miners who built St Helens. Barstaff are the minor characters in this particular play, but they pull efficiently enough and know that a mild drinker likes his pint full. Don't work too hard Sefton folk; keep it simple and you'll survive.

Firstly the staff are great, Matty who runs the place provides a welcoming atmosphere and is always checking you're ok, often popping over for a friendly chat too. The good is classic pub grub but is always served swift and to a good standard and the prices reasonable - I can't remember having a bad meal here. It's refurb last year has firmly put the Sefton back on the map, St. Helens isn't the place it used to be in terms of the bar/pub scene but the Sefton has remained and for me is still the cream of the crop. We visited The Sefton Arms on 25/1/14 for a family meal unfortunately this was a huge mistake, as we opened the doors it was like going into a pub 20yrs ago it stank of stale beer and generally not pleasant at all, we all ordered a variety of meals curries which came with naan breads & popadums ( which never arrived) a jumbo hotdog which you could have used as a rubber cosh microwaved to death and a mixed grill & a gammon all which were small portions and cold. The staff were at the best of times nowhere to be seen to complain to this as we all agreed was probably the worst meal that we have ever had anywhere and would never return even if just to use the toilets my advice stay well clear.

I can't fault this place, apparently it's just had a makeover and it does look and feel great. There's a good vibe going on and the fact that all the sports were showing were a bonus. Me and the wife wanted a bottle of wine, we went for the house white, £7!! By far the cheapest bottle of wine in the centre of town. Feeling peckish we decided to opt for a 2 for £8 deal - Hunters Chicken and Fish and Chips. Food was hot and tasty, served quickly too! For £4 a head you'd struggle to beat it. So for £15 we enjoyed a nice bottle of wine, 2 meals and even managed to watch a bit of football. I can safely say I'll be returning for many a Saturday afternoon.

I like The Sefton for a drink but had never ate in here until yesterday afternoon. I was on my own and was just looking for a hot meal and somewhere I could read the paper for an hour in peace. I ordered the Lasagne any got some chips on the side and pint of lager. The food was served within 10-15 minutes and was hot and tasty. I doubt it was cooked from scratch by an Italian chef but I practically had change from a tenner, so I'd have to say it was real value for money. There were plenty of chips and sauces to accompany them and the gentleman with the cute little nose who served me made sure everything was alright and offered table service for another drink. Would recommend if you're on a budget as it's clean and tidy with attentive staff.

The best place in St Helens to get a quality meal and value for your money. If your in the area, there's only one place to go, Sefton Arms. The Fish, chips and peas are beautiful!

I went here a few weeks ago with a friend for a few drinks, whilst we was there we decided to have something to eat. We didn't have to wait to long for our meal to come down and then meal was a decent size portion. The staff were friendly and the pub was done up nice after the recent refurb they had done. Would definitely eat here again

We visited today and decided to have lunch. What a big disappointment, we both had Fish and chips, the portions were child size. About 12 or so chips on the plate, a small fish and although there was a reasonable portion of mushy peas, none of it it was not as hot as it should have been. 2 staff members visited our table and asked the usual question, was everything ok, twice we said that there should have been more chips and we were told that the kitchen is told what size portion to plate up. On the next table a young couple were having a breakfast and Lasagne, the Lasagne was sent back, it was swimming in a pool of grease and we were told that the breakfast was very poor. So that is 4 unhappy customers that will never come back. Its Wetherspoon's next time, at least we get value for money there.

The sefton has recently undergone a refurbishment. Its a vast improvement and was well overdue. We popped in and decided to order some food. We decided on the lasagna (£6.95 or two for £8.00) and the Sunday roast (£5.95 each including a drink). The lasagna had a slick of oil on the top of it, cheese sauce was tasteless and not much substance to the whole dish. The Sunday roast was well presented, but the meat was too salty. There was lots of vegetables and the chips were nice. The lemon tart was very nice but the ice cream was tasteless.Watch out for the wonky table in the window next to the door, it urgently needs fixing. The bar staff were quite efficient but not that friendly.

I placed an order on just eat at 2.30pm, so not even a busy time, it took them 5 minutes to respond to my order and they declined it and still took the money from my bank! I phoned them up to ask why my order had been cancelled, a very rude male memeber of staff answered and said because they were “too busy”, I wouldn’t have minded waiting a little while for this, they had my number could they have not rang and asked? I said “seriously you cancelled because your busy?” Like what food establishment isn’t busy? And he very sarcastically replied “ yeah seriously” what kind of staff does that!? Not an apology or anything, very rude and disrespectful to their customers, they need to employ people who can actually manage to do their job, it’s pasties that go in the oven not rocket science, not exactly a hard task is it, never have any problems with the other pound bakery’s so just avoid this one! Absolutely appalling…..

I thought that the barmaid who was working on the sunday (Her name might have been Beth or Ben) Was very nice. I felt that she was doing a lovely job puring me pints and Double Steamboats with lemo.

Stopped off here for a bite to eat before going to the Theatre Royal. We had small plates between us which were excellent. We even had some lovely deserts,Cheesecake and Apple and Almond Tart. The service was great and the food came quickly. All the staff here were very friendly We will certainly call here again as we visit St Helens regularly.
