Worst cafe experience I’ve ever had due to the rude and hostile manageress. While discussing the extortionate price of an item one of the other staff members started sniggering. There are ways to be empathetic to customers and appreciate their views without being rude and shutting them down. She told me to leave and write a review. Two slices of standard white bread and butter is £4.95 whether or not you have jam/marmalade. I actually left this cafe crying in front of my young daughter with the toast buttered and shoved in a box. I appreciate prices, but you should be allowed to disagree and discuss how much something is worth without being made to feel like you’re doing something wrong. Although she is the manger she said she doesn’t set the prices and wouldn’t give me the name of who does. Obviously avoiding this place from now on.

Waited over 45 minutes for our food with no apology delay. Really overpriced menu. My two children who have never eaten meat ate some after there was ham in the cheese toastie (even though we asked for a plain cheese one). It looked like a ham and cheese toastie had been made and then they tried to remove the ham after it was cooked? Waitress was lovely about it, removed it from Bill and had a new one made immediately but still a really upsetting experience.

I can hardly put into words what an incredibly awful and upsetting experience I had, after many visits over many years this was the pits!! My mother and I ordered the vegetarian quiche we were told was on offer, a chorizo quiche was brought to the table, the waitress hoping we would accept it, there was no vegetarian quiche! We declined and chose a mediocre hummus panini, this took 25 mins to arrive after the same waitress came in the meantime to take our order!! Not a clue! Food was overcooked and uninspiring, we didn't complain! When I came to pay the waitress, who was supposedly the manageress, she started on me and said we were difficult customers and proceeded to be abusive and sarcastic!!! A horrible experience run by a cooperate, incompetent business which is only interested in profit. The cafe, as I understand it, is run separately to the garden centre.

My husband and I visited on Monday at 11.20am. We waited at the top of the stairs to be seated. A waitress asked us if we had booked. As we hadn't she said we could go on a table which was booked out at 12 noon. We ordered a coffee, tea, fruit scone and a cheese scone. The drinks were brought with the fruit scone. The waitress took the items off the tray and was about to leave. I asked where the cheese scone was. She said "it's coming". The fruit scone was very anemic looking. My husband said it was ok but not the best. Meanwhile I had drunk a cup of tea and was still waiting for the cheese scone to arrive. We asked again where it was. She said it was being cooked. When it arrived it had been sliced horizontally into 5 pieces and toasted crisp! I have never had a cheese scone served in this way before. It was very hard and not pleasant. I told the girl when paying that I had never had a scone served like that before. She said they were from a bakers in Bradford on Avon and asked if I liked it. I said no! She didn't apologise or ask any more. Won't be going there again.

It was a Monday morning before 10am. As you ascend the stairs at the top there is a large sign asking you to 'wait here to be seated'. My wife and I waited. There 3 people behind the counter, 2 wearing aprons. Two of them looked over at us but with no acknowledgement. We waited. Again the male member of staff this time looked at us, no acknowledgement that we were there. There were only 2 tables occupied so we didn't wait any longer and went in and sat at a table ourselves. Within a few minutes the male server came over with 2 menus that were thrust onto the table without a word. Then a female server came with note pad and was very polite and attentive. Our order was taken and a table was also booked for later in the week. Whilst waiting a customer came in with a dog on a lead and went straight to where the cakes are displayed and promptly poo'd on the mat, that is the dog not the owner. The owner cleaned it up seen by the male server. The owner and the dog then went and sat at a table within the cafe not out on the patio. Having been a dog owner most of my life I do not mind dog friendly cafes but I do feel that they should have a segregated area for such customers with dogs. The outside patio area seems suited for this purpose. It was not raining this day and is mostly covered anyway. I did not see any staff member go to that area where the dog had poo'd to inspect it or spray any disinfectant over the mat or put a cleaning sign up temporarily. We finished our food and drink and left. By the time we left the cafe was getting busier and nothing was said by us to the staff, however it is not my job to tell the staff their job.

I’m absolutely appalled by the management at this cafe. Someone needs to teach the young lady running the cafe some manners. Looking through the reviews I’m not the first person to pick up on this. Popped in here for a lunch and although it was busy we were shown a table straight away, table service was prompt, though waitress didn't return with the water we ordered and we had to go and find it ourselves. We visited in December, waited 45 minutes with no sign of our food. When we asked how much longer it would be, we were told 5 minutes, waited another 7 minutes to be told it would be another 10-15 minutes. We decided to leave and find lunch elsewhere - were given our drinks free and a piece of flapjack on the house as an apology. We visited again today, hoping the previous experience was a “one off”, however after being seated we heard numerous other customers complaining of waiting over an hour for their food, so decided to abandon ship (pre ordering) and find lunch elsewhere! Surprised there aren’t more negative reviews; unfortunately we won’t try for a third time.

Over 38% of reviews rate the experience here as terrible, poor or average. I rate my experience today as appalling. Having had a pleasant shopping experience in the Garden Centre I asked in the cafe if they did takeaway and was advised that they did. I ordered a bacon sandwich and was shocked that the price was £8.95. Despite this, I ordered and having waited nearly 15 minutes I asked the waitress/manager if she could find out what the delay was. She informed me that they did not do takeaway and that they were very busy. I pointed out that I had been told that they did do takeaway. I counted five tables occupied and already with their food or drinks and one table who had waited so long to order that they had to come to the counter to interrupt the 3 waitresses chatting to ask if someone could take their order. (Signs stating "Table Service Only"There followed the most pathetic and unprofessional attempt by the manager to try to justify the appalling service - not worthy of my time to detail here. Suffice to say that the entire staff should seek employment elsewhere where they may be better suited to the work - perhaps in an abattoir . I would strongly advise anyone considering visiting this place to go ahead and visit - but only if it is the last place on the planet serving food.

What has suddenly happened to our favoured destination to dine with family & friends? Having been regular & loyal diners we could never find a flaw… but…! Recently the service , well,we were made to feel unwelcome & albeit it was far from busy, we had to wait for 40 minutes for our food to arrive. WHEN it FINALLY arrived, we all agreed it was “nice” … but… nice is a bland word ! We couldn’t avoid overhearing the comments of the customers either side of us , whose disappointment replicated ours. Our 3 rd disappointment in as many weeks.

First impressions..filthy stair case that clearly hadn’t been cleaned for months. Unfriendly staff. I went with friends two of us didn’t want a full size breakfast as it is too much for the start of the day for me so asked if I could possibly have a kids one. Needless to say as I wasn’t a kid they wouldn’t do it. I ended up having two pieces of toast and jam. This for a little under £5 was extortionate. Poor service, lots of dogs, cold and comfortless. That’s enough for me never to return. Only plus side is…you can park easily.

I had a delicious avocado and poached eggs on toast which came with lots of fresh salad and was perfectly cooked and presented; a piping hot cup of coffee, and good value for money. We visited this most pleasant Garden Centre café after visiting a nearby National Trust property. We had walked miles up and down many hills on our walk; we were both tired, and quite hungry. We arrived here about 14:00 for lunch. This is an amazing place; a reasonably large garden centre right in the middle of one of the smallest cities in England. It’s also in a residential area, but on a finger of partially developed parkland called ‘Perrymead’. The café here is well regarded, so we were glad we could secure a table. We chose to dine in the conservatory area alongside the main dining area. We sat and waited for a waitress to take our order, and during that time another customer took a table. A waitress soon appeared and went straight to the table that had just been taken; that is always particularly annoying. It was a full 5 minutes later that another waitress came to our table. We placed our order: my Partner ordered a ‘Costa Rica’ Americano with hot milk and a ‘Chicken Caeser Salad’, whereas I ordered an English Breakfast Tea and an (obviously all-day) ‘Breakfast Bap’. The drinks arrived promptly, my tea needed time to brew, but I could see that it was loose leaf tea (always preferred). My Partner’s coffee was a bit weak, but the second cup, after eating her salad, was better. The meals looked good when they arrived. My Partner’s plate drew very good comments and was thoroughly enjoyed, of particular note was the bacon, which was beautifully cooked. My plate was very good too. Two rashers of well cooked back bacon, lovely sliced field mushrooms, a crispy hash brown and a runny yolk egg. The bap would have been better if it had been toasted, and even better if it had been sourdough. Service was pleasant, but as stated, someone dropped the ball with serving patrons in order of arrival. Value was very good at £32.44 (including a 5% service charge).

'Secret' garden Prior Park garden centre. Basically an outside slapped area of the cafe upstairs. Quite nice. Undercover but if windy you could get wet depending on the direction as it is open on 3 sides. There is a 'garden', well a flower bed which on my visit was bereft of flowers. There was a small shrub but otherwise lots of bare earth. The climbing rose was in need of dead heading and a good trim to liven it up. The food was ok and came quickly. Not a bad choice to choose from. We had, altogether, 2 teas, 3 coffees, a sausage bap, a slice of Victoria sponge and a scone with jam and cream. £35. My how things add up. Cafe was quite busy and getting busier as it approached lunchtime . 😋

Visited this cafe under new management and under a new chef - it was delicious. Caesar salad was excellent with plenty of dressing. Bacon sandwich was lovely - fresh bread and plenty of bacon. Rarebit was delicious. Plates were full with fresh salad accompaniments. Coffee was the star of the show - whatever the brand it was creamy, frothy and hot ! Staff were attentive and so helpful especially acknowledging the babies and elderly customers. This place was busy with the option of outside seating. I can understand people don’t like change but this has changed for the better for sure. We visited mid afternoon and got the last table. This speaks for itself - arrive early to avoid disappointment. Clean toilets and table was cleaned for us taking into account I had a young baby with me so the waitress sprayed away from the table onto a cloth to wipe. It’s these little touches that make the difference. We will be back as the free parking is a massive bonus.

We have been using this cafe over the years as an easy meet up place with a car park and a great garden centre to browse while there. Last time we came, it was closed and were told a sad tale of the former management shutting shop and not allowing the website to inform people that it was closed. We returned yesterday to have lunch. It looks exactly the same. Would have been nice to see some improvements/ changes. We had tomato and basil soup at £7.50 a bowl! So no problem with the soup but bowls not full and sliced, supermarket granary bread! 2 rounds (too much for us). A rustic single roll would have been more appropriate at that price. the sandwiches were (I think) £9.50! The door to the outside area would not close and so there was an icy draft breezing in. There was about a 6 inch gap and I got up twice to try and close it over but it remained with the gap. Like others have said, we spent the time there thinking of where we will go in future- but it won't be there! What a shame. Amazingly lavish garden centre and over priced unimaginative cafe upstairs. Yes, we noticed the cutlery in a basket on the table, as Covid, Flu and Strep numbers are going up. Sorry

At Sept 2022, our visit was post-refurb and with the cafe under new management. The Secret Garden cafe used to be our favourite lunch/coffee/cake spot in Bath for the past 2 decades, but it now feels like it is run by a faceless company looking for profit. You now have to wait to be shown to a table (why?), the menu and food lacks creativity, hygiene standards have dropped, and unfortunately we spent our time there trying to think about an alternative cafe where we could go in the future. We noticed that uncovered knives, forks and sugar cubes were stored on the tables - not good for hygiene. Also on the tables were ketchups and mayo bottles, some of which should be refrigerated. The staff used their fingers to push cakes onto serving plates, rather than utensils. Delivery of cups of coffee took an age - the coffee machine capacity was no match for the seating capacity of the cafe. Staff were pleasant, but obviously stressed. During our visit, they apologised to various customers for the delays in serving drinks and food. Overall, this cafe will get business because it is in Bath, has parking, and is attached to an excellent garden centre. It is a pity the cafe is no longer up to the standard expected, based on our previous years of experience.

As others have said, this used to be a lovely cafe, and it could be again as the setting in the garden centre is very nice. The garden centre itself is as good as ever. However, since the change of management it has become very bad in almost every way. The menu is dull, most of the food is virtually inedible and the prices are ridiculous. I had a particularly horrible Welsh "rarebit" which consisted of a slice of untoasted "mother's pride" type bread, topped with a disgusting, lukewarm brown sludge. Not worth £2.50, let alone the £10.00 on the menu (though in fairness the manager did knock it off the bill). A toasted sandwich was barely toasted, even the chips were pretty unpleasant. We've given it a chance since the new management took over, but it has got no better. If anything it is getting worse. I'm very sorry to be so negative. The serving staff are all very polite (even if rather disorganised), but that aside there really is nothing good to say about this place. Drastic changes are needed, and if the current management can't see what's wrong they need to make way for someone who can.

Like a lot of locals for many years this was a favourite place for breakfast, lunch, or a tea and a slice of cake. The post refurbishment regime is a mistake, the menu has lost a lot of the crowd pleasers , the quality has gone down hill and the prices have gone up (a lot). For those who might be interested some examples: No jacket potatoes, sandwiches are made with sliced bread , previously they used hob house cut bread, the salads are basic, the specials board has limited choices, not the lovely burgers, quiches , salads, toasties, test case for me is the dire quality and cost now of the bacon and egg sandwich, which before was a thing of beauty. When we were here the single option on the specials board was "Spanish Style Quiche" Lots of staff , I counted 5 serving + chef, service was prompt , didn't appreciate the "do I want to give a tip" when I paid. My impression is new management has refurbished to increase the number of tables, and increased the staff in anticipation of a surge in customers and has bumped up the prices. It's a shame as a gardener I also came here for the garden centre and the cafe was a pleasant bonus, until the cafe improves I will be going elsewhere for plants , compost and bacon sandwiches

I have been going to Prior Park Garden Centre for 15 years & spent a considerable amount of money there. Part of the attraction, in addition to the good plants, was the cafe. It was a cheerful, friendly place (almost familial). That has gone & been eplaced with a polite & slightly clinical service. The prices have increased hugely. I often had a bacon sandwich and a cappuccino, which cost £7.10. This then increased to £9.60, with the rather poor bacon sandwich priced at £6.50. A week later, this had been increased to £7.50, making a total of £10.60, & I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip??

Full power to ?Suzy/Susie for being the only paid worker running the cafe today, with no volunteers available as obviously not able to risk infection .. you're worth fifty quid an hour now, girl xx

This café is above the main shop of the garden centre. It is charming with very professional staff. And has a nice range of teacakes shortbread sausage rolls and other items on sale. I lovely place for local people to meet. The fact that local people use is testimonyTo how good the service is

Hopeless, no idea of time management; not everyone has all day to wait and some customers gave up waiting for coffees already ordered and were given refunds.

An ok place, but as garden centres/cafe's go, not the best..... and way too expensive. I had a milkshake with a slice of cake in the cafe and thought that it would be delicious as they were advertised as being made from the localally made icecream..... and home made. Hmmmmm... I could taste the milk in the milkshake, but that was all. And the cake? Small portion, but tasty. 4 of us had the same. £20? I wont be coming back!

I called in this morning for coffee/cake (around 1100 Monday 21/10/19). In spite of all the tables being full, the staff continued to serve people. It's their policy to serve cakes to you at the counter, and bring coffee over. Thus people has cakes and...

I have been going to this cafe for over a decade and the food has always been yummy but in recent years it’s gone up another level. There are 3 reasons this cafe works 1. The staff are kind, happy and know what they’re doing....

Lovely little cafe with a homely feel. Good food and drinks. Convenient when out with the children at the garden centre and pet shop. Good choice of cakes, including gluten free options. Decor and seating boring and not very uncomfortable, like a canteen. #glutenfree #cafe

Love this pub. Found it the once, regular forever. Truly great local beers, and kind and friendly staff too. Just one thing: BRING BACK THE MENA STOUT!! It is the best stout in the world (possibly) and I want it back!

The Rising Sun is under new ownership and I’m pleased to see it seems on the way back to its former glory. The pub is undergoing some much needed renovations. We had a really good meal there and very enjoyable evening, the menu isn’t huge but what was on offer cooked well and very good quality. All washed down with an equally good bottle of Malbec.
