The restaurant seemingly under the same management has varied massively over the years often depending on whether there were other ventures on the go. From excellent to average. The present incarnation has borrowed its name from a defunct restaurant from across the road. The new decor is nice. The menu has a small plate section and mains. The chef who can cook well, isn’t at present sufficiently interested to cook them well.

We had booked a table several weeks ago for the last night of our stay in Amble and the restaurant had confirmed the reservation. When we arrived for our table, there was no table available for us and we were asked to come back later. We asked how long and were told maybe half an hour. The waitress brought the the reservations book over to check our contact details, and the reservation was clearly there for a table for 2 at 7.30pm. In the absence of any definite time to return, and having no wish to sit in a bar waiting for a table, we decided not to eat at this restaurant. We were very disappointed as we had been looking forward to sampling the food. Poor management for not letting us know our table would not be ready, although it was good that the restaurant was busy.

Two years after our last trip to Northumberland, we so looked forward to returning to this lovely place. The choices and range of food on this menu is excellent, but it would be rude not to have a fish dish. However starters were a cheese soufflé with a sauce that included samphire, just made you want to lick the bowl at the end. My wife had the arancinni, that she loved. There was only one choice for us -halibut on a bed of tagliatelle being one of those meals you didn’t want to end. Fish cooked to perfection and just melted in the mouth. This place is a little gem and would be our first choice every time in Amble. Perhaps check and book, just in case it’s busy. Thanks to all the staff.

Visited recently as a family group and we sampled quite a selection of dishes on the whole we enjoyed food but I think some aspects were a bit underwhelming Bread service would be nice or even the option to order a bread selection ? Portions that came with mussels and pate were really meagre at one small piece No cocktails ? Even an espresso martini is pretty standard these days , easy to make and add to dessert options or an affogato ? Service wise it would have been nice to have someone ask how our food was during any of the three courses rather than once at the end and only after we had paid the bill - for a Saturday night seemed to be lacking a management prescence ? Foodwise some feedback Goats cheese and beetroot was a bit of a miss , no real chilli flavour and for the price I’d expect more than a tiny sliver of cheese and a bit of prepacked beetroot chopped up - again a bit of bread would have been nice to spread the cheese onto Sauce on the mussels wit the cider and pancetta - amazing , I could drink that (and did using a spoon) The sea bass and mussels with chicken jus really sounded fantastic , good portion of both proteins but really really over salted bass and broth with any chicken jus flavour watered down by the inedibly salty broth - a real shame as had potential to be superb. Creme brûlée was delicious but for £8 or £9 I’d expect the advertised butter shortbread to be homemade and not a piece from a pack of shop bought - that’s just not good value for money considering the simple ingredients of the brûlée and a bit lazy.

Fell upon this place on a Saturday afternoon in Amble. Menu was very promising so we sat down and ordered a bottle of Sauvignon blanc while we made the difficult decision of what to eat, everything sounded so good. As it was lunch time we probably wouldn’t of opted for a starter but there was so much we wanted to try we chose 2 starters to share between 3 of us. Scallop ceviche in tigers milk - wow absolutely delicious, fresh, zingy with a lovely heat of chilli Mussels with cider and pancetta- another delight, the sauce was creamy with salty pancetta and beautifully plump mussels, could of ate a ton of them My main was halibut with lobster and saffron tagliatelle, as soon as it arrived I could see that the halibut was over cooked, feeling a little responsible as we took so long savouring our delicious starters I let it go. The pasta was fresh and tasty with plenty of lobster meat. So if it wasn’t for the cooking of the halibut it would of been perfect. Other dishes were, lobster and chips with a truffle mayo and Coley with brown shrimp, dill and cucumber. I tasted both dishes they were both done really well and very tasty but my opinion would be that the coley like my halibut was slightly over. Again we put this down to how long we took to finish our starters. We had 2 bottles of the wine, it was ice cold and a perfect pairing to the lovely seafood. I would definitely recommend and I would definitely return. I am happy to assume the imperfections were a one off as everything else was really well done. If you’re visiting amble give them a visit, try the mussels I would eat them again today.

We went for our anniversary. This is the second time we’ve been. The food was very well presented and tasted lovely. The only think that let it down was the young girl that served us (not sure if it was her first night) as she wasn’t very customer friendly , forgot our drinks then when she did bring them one was the wrong drink and had to be her twice if we could see dessert menu. So this spoilt it for us The food was lovely so that’s why I gave 4 rating .

As many others have said this is a great chilled restaurant with excellent food, I had lobster mac and cheese a first for me, very tasty. The fish dishes were fresh and tasty, presented beautifully. Amble has unpretentious restaurants with amazing food and this is one of the best.I think this is what makes a trip to this area so special. The chef even came out to see if everything was ok, really passionate about their food without being pompous as so many chefs of this level could be.

We went to Sea and Soil when we were in Amble on holiday in 2019 and thought it was one of the best meals we'd ever had. Back there on holiday last week, we booked again. Any minor thoughts that it wouldn't be as good soon disappeared. The twice-baked cheese souffle, scallops with chorizo, halibut and saffron tagliatelle, sticky toffee pudding - all just fabulous. Simple as that! Wonderful flavours, beautifully cooked, friendly service - a great evening, thank you.

I was able to book that morning a table for 4 for lunch which provided a gluten free menu. We travelled by bus from Newcastle upon Tyne arriving to a friendly welcome from Lucy, who was efficient and helpful. We had decided on a price ceiling and we’re pleased we were able to order a starter, a side and dessert each and enjoy a good bottle of South African wine for that price. Overall meal was good but it is very expensive. House wine was good. Cheese soufflé excellent. Scallop starter OK. Main course of coal fish a let down. Bland needed proper seasoning and the potato postage was yuk, thick gloopy sauce that still tasted of flour. We were not asked if mains were OK so didn't have chance to feed this back. I would normally have complained but special date with parter so didn't want to spoil things. I eat out in restaurants all the time and this was not as good as I expected it to be given the reviews. We ate out in a local pub the previous night and the food was far better for 50% of the price. The other annoying thing is the menu is up on one wall meaning you have to get out of your seat if you are seated facing away from that wall.

A welcoming bistro with a great menu. We visited for dinner and received a warm welcome. The service was excellent and the food delicious. The menu was extensive and displayed on blackboards on the wall. Unfortunately we couldn't see the blackboard from where our table was positioned, so we had to stand to study it. In these days of social distancing we were very conscious of other guests eating whilst we stood looking at the menu. It might help to have a paper copy available if necessary. We just felt like we couldn't give the menu enough consideration. This didn't spoil our evening though. I chose the cod with langoustines and mussels which was delicious and two of us had the sea bass, also very tasty. Whilst the dessert menu wasn't extensive the Sticky Toffee Pudding and the Chefs Selection comprising of three small desserts (Black Forest Cheesecake, Chocolate Tart and a Caramel Delice) all tasted divine. All in all a fabulous meal!

The staff are a real asset to the restaurant and it is a real bonus that the chef comes out to check that everything is ok. The Covid procedures are spot on and we felt very safe eating here. I visited on a Sunday evening ...just two of us. The food was very tasty, presented beautifully and decent value. We had scallops, cheese soufflé, sea bas and cod ....all cooked to perfection. Service ...mixed. I was told that a substitution needed to be made in one of the dishes because it was the end of the weekend and they had run out of the ingredient ....when the dish came, the substitution wasn’t needed , they had run out of a beer on the menu and another dish wasn’t available......none of this was a deal breaker but the way we’re we’re told was all a little “ take it or leave it”. To be fair , we were also served by another waitress and she was great. The ambience.....it may just be Covid measures that caused it to feel a little bright and stark.

Eg salmon and crab risotto & the lemon meringue pie.The risotto was somewhat blandThe lemon meringue had more flavour from the excessive raspberry sauce which over powered the lemon and an unnecessary macaron garnish

We were lucky to grab last table for Sunday lunch. The food was well above average and not the usual run of the mill. Starter of plump king scallops with black pudding and tomatoes was tasty and expertly cooked. Duck parfait was near perfect. A fresh brioche would’ve made it. Monkfish on a broad bean ragout was very tasty. The roast rump of lamb was simply a pan fried piece of lamb. Nothing wrong but I had expected a Sunday roast. The rest was delicious. What can I say, I am somewhat sad that we live so far away!! We had supper this evening at Sea & Soil and I can honestly say that it was the most delicious food we’ve eaten all holiday! I enjoyed some incredibly complex and tasty pork belly, a massive bowl full of seafood delights (including fresh langoustine) and managed to almost have enough space for the pudding too! My husband had some scrummy muscles followed by a truly scrumptious steak - beautifully cooked - and found a little extra space for his plum and frangipane tart... even our toddler son enjoyed several courses!! I could comment on the food for hours (in face we did!) but the service which stood out equally. The lovely, friendly and kind waitress (who seemed like front of house) was fantastic! She was efficient with our booking, delightful with our son and genuinely interested in chatting to us - the kind of service you’d hope for - and we also met the chef a number of times too - clearly talented but also friendly, chatty and smiling. I’m sorry we didn’t have cash to leave a tip but we will be back - in fact, it’s a very sensible reason to come back and visit again soon - what a treat!

Booked on recommendation of a friend . Modest sized menu but something for everyone including three picky, sceptical teenagers . All in our group enjoyed their meals and hardly anything left on plates after each course . Menu includes seafood and meat dishes and vegetarian options. Good quality fresh ingredients. Scallop and black pudding starter and halibut and lobster tagliatelle particular highlights . Fillet steak hit with teens . Service very good and it was a very nice touch that chef asked us if we enjoyed our meal at the end . Clear he cares about dishes he puts out . Highly recommend and best meal we had in the area .

Slightly belated birthday lunch (mine - getting very old !!) paid for by my daughter. We managed 3 courses along with wine - Cara had scallops & black pudding starter and I had smoked chicken with tagliatelle, both had Lamb Rump with mashed potatoes & veg for main courses, Cara had Creme Brulee and I had the Chocolate & Raspberry Cheesecake along with coffees. The food, as always, was perfectly cooked & presented. It was quite quiet, but it was good to hear that their business is steadily picking back up during the evenings - hopefully both locals & "tourists" will help all local businesses to thrive after lockdown - they certainly deserve to as the food and service is A1 !!!Certainly Covid safe - tables well apart and sanitiser readily available at entrance and on the counter. We will be back.

We have had dinner for four people this evening and have had fabulous food served by delightful staff. Clearly the Covid restrictions have had an impact on dining out but Sea and Soil were still able to deliver an excellent dining experience to a very high standard. The chef even popped out to discuss the food with all the diners including the detail of our order. Would I come back? - in a heartbeat I would, and I would recommend this place to anyone- well priced menu, interesting food choices! Lovely evening, thank you

Finally managed to eat here after about 5 years of trying as we’re from Scotland. It was so worth the wait! We visited their pop up in Alnmouth for lunch a few days ago and followed it up with a full dinner tonight. The restaurant is well set up to consider social distancing but doesn’t lack friendly service or atmosphere. The food was truly excellent - the hardest part was choosing our dishes. Can’t fault anything and we are desperate to come back. Please support this wonderful local restaurant, especially during these times!

On holiday in Northumberland and visited Sea&Soil. Three years since our first visit and the food was again delicious. Hard to make a choice from the menu as everything was so tempting. Warm and friendly staff, super service, and owner/chef Jon Bird producing fabulous food.I wish we lived closer, but this bistro will always be on our list to visit.

I go to Sea and Soil regularly. This time I got a takeout due to lockdown. I had a lobster and beef burger with mozzarella sticks and chicken wings. It was absolutely unreal, potentially one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

We had a short stay in Amble over the weekend and chose Sea and Soil for our evening meal on the Saturday. We were very pleased that we did. The food was amazing and the staff very friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself is very cosy and a lovely place to enjoy some food on a cold winters night. We will be back next time we visit Amble.

We got married up here this week and once family had departed were looking for a local treat, so we didnt have to cook, and could both have wine n walk home. It didnt disappoint, whereas another local restaurant turned us away as they had closed the kitchen, (I know its out of season but it was only 8pm), S&S couldnt have been more welcoming. How lucky for us because the food in Sea n Soil was a.m.a.zing. I hadnt chosen a starter as thought i might go for pud instead, they brought us a some little canapes, which were delightful little bunches of flavour, I particularly liked the salmon mousse. I had monkfish with gnocci and woodland mushroom, my (new) husband had confit of belly pork....tender, beautifully cooked, just awesome.Service, ambiance etc was all great and I know we will come back to this restaurant and am sad we dont live nearer. Not to be missed, Amble really is starting to show its true colours...and this place is a right gem. I wish you all the continued success.

I have just recently celebrated a special birthday at Sea & Soil with friends. As ever the food was amazing and enjoyed by everyone, all 15 of us! The service was brilliant, we were really looked after well by team, nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere. Jonny the chef owner made me the most amazing cake which was enjoyed by all, it tasted as good as it looked! I can’t thank everyone enough for a really special night, what a great place and team!

We went to Amble for a few days and i googled all the nice restaurants so we would enjoy our stay and make sure we only ate at the best reviewed ones, however we went to Sea and Soil on the Friday the 24th of January at 8.30 and there was only a handful of people eating so we were confident of getting a table, so to say we were shocked when we were told they had stopped serving food at 8.30, given that Amble was very quiet and most places were not open you would have thought the places that were would have been glad of the business, not so Sea and Soil it would seem

We visited Sea & Soil just after New Year and we were not disappointed! The fresh fish dishes were cooked beautifully and our compliments go to the chef, who also came out to check everybody's food which was a lovely touch. The service from the lovely young girl (that's allergic to fish! Sorry we didn't catch your name!) was exceptional - friendly, professional and attentive and a real asset to the restaurant. We both chose starters of the specials menu, and I chose a special for main and my partner chose a dish off the main menu. They were stunning, all of them - as well as the canopes served before-hand. ** Just one ever-so-teeny bit of feedback - it would be handy if the card machine could add on a tip as we had no cash on us and we would have like to have left a tip.We would highly recommend this restaurant, thank you for a lovely experience!

This place is always very good. But today they excelled themselves. Great service by the young team. We opted for the roast beef. It was amazing especially the “burnt carrot sauce” . The beef was full of flavour. Well worth the price. Looking forward to coming back for Sunday lunch again.

A glorious e course meal alongside a friendly welcome and complimentary canopies. Chef circulated for a chat. But the highlight is the food. It is amazing. All our dishes looked and tasted divine. Standout was the harissa salmon starter and the Stone Bass and Shrimps. We travel alot and eat in countless places. This is simply the best, especially in the north east. Amble is turning into a dining hotspot. I will need to downgrade some of my other reviews to do this justice. A true 5 star experience...

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
