Seagull Restaurant in Hastings

We visited on bank holiday Monday and couldn't work out why it was much emptier than surrounding places- possibly because they weren't doing eat out to help out, however it meant we got a window table. Food was fairly quick to come out and the fish was tasty, the chips were probably a little on the over done side but I like them crispy. Shared bottles of ketchup and tartare sauce- luckily we had brought our own hand sanitiser. Overall fairly decent meal, wouldn't rush back and looking at the huge queues in other places I wonder if other people know something we didn't.

We always visit this fish and chip shop but definitely won’t be back... Food I’m not even sure I had cod as ordered as it had a huge bone down the middle and very little white flakes of fish, the batter actually was crispy. My daughter had scampi but most of those were just hollow pieces of batter. Staff Service wasn’t too bad, however was put off by an older man with a moustache rolling up his cigarette at the table at the back of the restaurant whilst also wrapping cutlery in napkins 😬 Being typically British we just paid up and left, it’s such as shame as my husband has been visiting this restaurant when he was a child and we’ve been bring our child for 14 years. Think they’ve had another change of owners.

Made a visit with the family today and the food was absolutely amazing. The Best Chips and Batter I have tasted in the past 50 years. Will defiantly be going back again.

Initially the welcome was pleasant but when the food arrived it looked over cooked and very dry. The chips looked as though they had been reheated from the day before and the same with the fish where the batter was brittle hard and the fish dried inside. When we said that we were not happy with the meal, instead of trying to understand our issue we were faced with an argument. Although we had to leave the food we paid (in full), left and then went to eat at another nearby restaurant - not only an expensive lunch experience but also an upsetting experience. We have eaten at several fish and chip restaurants in Hastings - and there are probably more of them in Hastings than anywhere else - and we have never been disappointed with our meal. Had we noticed the other negative reviews we most certainly wouldn't have chosen to eat here, particularly given the wide choice of other nearby places available.

I took a group of 18 here, pre-booked, the food was great and a number of people said it was the best fish and chips they had ever had. The fish was really fresh. The staff were extremely helpful. There is only a very small lip when entering the restaurant so it was easily accessible with a wheelchair. The only draw back is the toilets are upstairs.

Friendly staff with a very busy boss, he was training up his staff,they did very well! I had ham,egg and chips which was ok, the ham was not deli style but was round , I prefer Wiltshire ham! Plenty of families in, they didn't leave a thing! The toilets are upstairs plus more tables. The staff helped carry pushchairs up the stairs if needed. You wouldn't go there for a special meal but for a filling tasty meal it's fine.

After all of the good reviews I thought we were in for a tasty dinner but the whole meal was awful. The general feel was that everything was really cheap in quality. I had a glass of Rose which tasted awful, the batter wasn’t cooked enough on the cod, chips were dry and over cooked and the fish in the kids fish fingers were grey/brown, yuk! I asked for a piece of fish to replace the fish fingers and I was brought more fish fingers, just as grey. I couldn’t let my kids eat them. Very disappointing. I went to discuss the bill and my disappointment and the waitress said something like ‘you complained about everything, have a free meal and don’t come back!’ I said I’m more than happy to pay for some of the meal but not for the bits that we’re awful and she picked up the order, scrunched it up and threw it on the floor! I wished her luck if this is how she treated customers and left feeling very sad that we had been treated as such and also sad for the owners of the restaurant if they treat customers in such a way. I have never not paid for a meal at all and felt very weird and sickened by her attitude and the way she treated us. If this is how the seagull operates I wouldn’t want anyone to go through the same experience. Do not eat here! I wish i took photos to show how bad it was. It has really dampened our holiday.

Took grandkids on a day trip. Found all eateries very busy and spotted a table. Not a massive menu, but each meal was of good quality and well cooked. Service was very good and staff were very friendly. There is even more space upstairs. Name of review is courtesy of our little ones. When the owner asked if the food, they both chorused YUMMY. Give it a go!

The Seagull is always our first choice for fish and chips when visiting Hastings. It is always freshly cooked, hot and crispy - perfect. The staff are friendly and although we only visit a couple of times a year the owner always greets us as regulars. Fine dining it's not but can't be beaten for traditional fish and chips

Haddock and chips what could go wrong? Well quite a lot. Fish looked big and chrisp , chips well done . Inside the fish was ok but the batter let it down. Left a gummy sticky mass on the fish had to be scrapped off as it was very unpleasant. Ate what I could left 95% of the batter as it was not edible. Alerted the waitress who spoke to the Owner/Fish Fryer about our experience. She returned to say nothing could be done and the Owner was quite sure all was well with the fish he served. Eventually the Owner came to out table to say he had 10years experience he was sure it was fine. No one had ever complained. He could bring the plate back to show the food was eaten! Not a pleasant experience at all total lack of understanding that the customer is always right! Defended it to the hilt. ‘Feel Free to check it out yourself but be warned you might be in for a surprise.

Lovely friendly staff best cooked fish and chips I’ve had and lived here for 25years and eaten a few If you are looking for a modern restaurant then this is not for you but if your looking for a homely friendly place then make this your first choice

We were ignored by our usual Fish and Chip Café in the Old Town so walked along the front and just in front of the "swan lake" we decided to visit the Seagull and we were so pleased. We managed to get the window seat upstairs and were looked after extremely well with plenty to drink both hot and cold (delicious mug of hot tea) and our fish and chips for our daughter plus the two boys were excellent. Super crispy chips. The staff were very helpful. We will definitely visit this Restaurant next year on our annual visit to Hastings by train. Thank you to all the staff.

The place it's self looked cute and family friendly.

Reviewed in 2016, revisited frequently and every time visiting there seems to be a new owner. Originally loved the chips they were like homemade 'like grandma made' but the last visit they were different. Didnt get as much as we used to, had about 6 pieces of scampi (looked store bought which is a shame as the ocean is right across) served in a piece of lettuce, chicken nuggets also breaded and same as birds eye. A water, half pint of beer, childrens meal and scampi came to over £20 when priced menu would have made it £17/18. Would go again but order something worth the money and take a bigger purse.

One of our best experiences visiting a restaurant. Friendly staff, family-friendly environment, delicious food ( we had fish and chips - best ever, sirloin steak perfectly cooked, kids menu - they loved their burgers, crispy chips). Delicious fruity rose wine as well! Definitely worth visiting in Hastings!

Lovely staff and the fish and chips were very hot and tasty,separate peas in a dish.Restuarant clean and tidy and were selling local people's art work which was lovely to see.3 scoops of icecream and sauce delicious.Bill arrived with mints.

Popped in about 1400hrs on the 16th June. Ordered fish and chips with mushy peas. I thought it was ok but the GF really enjoyed it. I would give it 3.5 out of 5. Massive portions however I thought the chips and fish were over cooked by about a minute. I would go back which means it was nice food.

Rude staff, terrible food! I can name a handful of better fish and chip restaurants very near by. Do not waste you're time of money here. Just my opinion!

Simple seaside food. Fish and chips at its best. Cut into the crispy batter, and behold, steaming fresh cod, a little salt & vinegar and perfection. Add the bread and butter, chip butty! Heaven.

we stayed in a cottage called Seagulls Nest so eating in Seagull Restaurant seemed natural. The best thing about it was you could have GRILLED cod. And it was delicious. A shame that when we went it was so quiet but the food was a) HOT, b) TASTY and c) good value. Not often my wife comments loudly and even called the guys over to tell them how good it was.

Fuimos a la Seagull el sábado por la noche con nuestra tía que solía visitar con su difunto marido. Sin rexommendation lo que normalmente hubiera elegido lo reciente al lado, ya que estaba más lleno. El Seagull es luminoso y espacioso y muy limpio. Todos teníamos el pescado y patatas fritas (qué más en un viaje a una ciudad de pesca) y todo recién cocinado. El bateador era ligero y crujiente, no grasienta y las patatas fritas eran perfectos. El dueño y el personal es muy amable y acogedor. Ganas de volver la próxima vez que estemos en la zona

Ein imposantes, kleines Häuschen, zentralgelegen mit super freundlichem Service und sehr sauber. Es war gut besucht, ganz zu Recht, denn das Essen war frisch, von guter Qualität mit kurzen Wartezeiten. Mir hat besonders der Seeaal geschmeckt, tolle Panade und der Fisch kein bisschen trocken. Auch die Scampi von meinem Sohn waren gut zubereitet. Wir werden wiederkommen. Übrigens bekommt man auf Wunsch Gerichte auch außer Haus.

Fuimos a este restaurante en domingo como una familia. Con tantos lugares de pescado y patatas fritas para elegir que fueron arrastrados a este restaurante debido a su pintoresco edificio. Fuimos dentro y un plato de cada pedido pescado y patatas fritas, la comida era deliciosa y el tamaño de la porción era bien vale la pena. Todas nuestras necesidades fueron atendidas, las camareras eran muy amables y atendía las necesidades que teníamos, y el propietario Osman era extremadamente amable y cálido. Él llegó a preguntarnos después cómo nuestra comida era.

Walked our feet off trying to find someone who done a good seafood meal with salad . Not a tall order on a scorching hot day , Seagul done it for us . Didn't have it on the menue but done exactly what we wanted . That's what service is about . Went back the next day and had a different but equally good meal .

The cod and chips were amazing and fresh. My partner had baked potato and that was also nice. The bad things was the ketchup was very watered down cheap tasting and the drinks were expensive. 1.50 for a glass of coke. Would visit again though.

My husband and I had a late lunch here on Saturday. We both chose the Skate which was excellent, cooked to perfection and the batter was delicious. The chips were also good, not at all greasy. All in all a very pleasant experience. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Only regret is maybe we should have sat upstairs as the view from the bay window is probably delightful! Regardless, our table downstairs was very comfortable.

Dieses kleine Fish and Chips-Restaurant gegenüber des Mini-Golfs an der Uferpromenade gelegen, ist echt eine positive Überraschung. Vor allem im zweiten Stock sitzt man schön und hat einen guten Ausblick auf das kiss-me-quick Ende der Stadt. Dann kam der Fisch und die außen knusprigen um innen saftigen Pommes, dazu Mushy Peas. Von Läden wie diesem erwartet man ja eigentlich nicht viel, um so größer war die Überraschung, als mir der Fisch auf der Zunge zerging. Ich habe schon viele Fische mit Pommes verdrückt, aber diese von Seagull sind mit die besten, die ich jemals hatte.

We took my 90 year old Mother for a Birthday lunch there and couldn't have been more pleased that we chose the Seagull. Warm and friendly staff were only too happy to adapt the menu to suit my Mothers needs (boiled potatoes rather than chips with her fish etc). My cod was delicious and huge with a tasty and delicate batter rather than the thick and stodgy batter you sometimes get elsewhere. Complimented nicely by the perfectly cooked chunky chips and everything piping hot when served. Nice decor with artwork of local scenes added to the seaside ambience. Highly recommended.

Fast efficient service and delicious fish and chips. Piping hot and crispy no soggy bits or oil on the plate. Good choice of grilled fish too. The chips remained hot and crispy .Went on one of Hastings busiest days but service was still good, extra seating upstairs. Will go again.

Everything was perfect. The Food , staff, and the restaurant. We love it!!! Next time in Hastings we will definitely come here!

After walking out of the 'masterfish bar' due to absolutely awful service we went to this lovely place instead. The staff were delightful and attentive. My daughter loves bacon in her burger and despite there being none on the menu they made it for her. Food was lovely and as said before, the staff were great. Avoid the masterfish bar and go here!!

one of our party was a muslim.his wife enquired as to whether the chips were cooked in the same oil as sausages or other pork based food.when it became clear that the chef was also muslim this obviously answered our query.the food was fantastic,great tasting fish and the chips,as other reviewers have said,were big and chunky,crisp on the outside and velvet soft in the middle.highly recommended.

Visited with a group of friends for our Breakfast after the night before! Delicious full English with plenty of hot buttered toast, yummy. The local artist's work on the walls captured Hastings beautifully. Thank you for a great start to 2017

Been to this restaurant many times, its been there for years with different patrons. Very nice welcome. Hot, hearty food. Reasonably prices compared to competitors. Will always return.

Great, friendly and prompt service. Simple atmosphere, but cozy like a diner and very clean. But you would go here for the food. Very tasty fresh fish and chips. The best part is that if you are gluten intolerant the chef (owner) has a gluten free option for fish and chips (the fish is pan fried without breading). Very reasonable prices, but again you'd go here for the fresh and delicious food.

My boyfriend and I make a habit of visiting ever month (sometimes twice in one week) and have deemed it as being our new place to have date day. The staff are always so friendly and on our first visit we ordered off menu and were very accommodating to our needs. We always order chicken nuggets and chips which we share as the portions are large and yer we can't seem to get enough. The chips are always amazingly chunky and remind us of homemade traditional chips because of their fluffy texture and crisp outside- definitely not frozen or from a packet. We haven't had any other menu items but from neighbouring tables we have been in awe over large crispy battered fish and juicy burgers. Definetly a place to go and enjoy the beautiful view of the sea, the old town is so peaceful this place feels like a home from home. Perfect every time.

Make sure you visit this excellent little restaurant on the seafront in Hastings. It changed hands a couple of years ago and the owner is a wonderful Turkish man who can't do enough for you. He is so nice and his food is excellent, we will certainly go back next time we are in Hastings

We popped in for fish and chips whilst down in Hastings for the day. There is a lot of restaurants on the sea front that offer fish and chips, we choice the Seagull as it looked like a lovely quaint restaurant and seating inside for a slightly chilly September afternoon. We sat at table looked at menu and waitress came over and took our order. Great service very prompt and the food was amazing, the fish fresh and in an amazing batter. Chips are proper thick cut chips also amazing. I had the plaice and hubby had the Huss, both lovely and reasonably priced, definitely worth a visit if your in Hastings.

We popped in for a quick drink and the staff were so friendly and welcoming, what a lovely little place! Would visit again.

We have been going to the seagull for over many years, on our own and with a children. Last saturday we were in Hastings for the seafood & wine festival and decided to re-visit our old favourite: "The Seagull", it hasn't changed a bit. We were warmly welcomed and seated downstairs. I chose Skate & Chips, whilst my OH selected Place & chips; we also had a glass of wine each. But no room left for desert.The food was excellent, freshly cooked and plenty of it.All the staff, including the owner were charming - top marks

I'd never been to the Seagull before and was pleasantly surprised. The upstairs room was cool and airy on a hot day, the fish and chips were served promptly for a big party of women. The service was good and the food was excellent. It was good to see batter-free grilled fish on the menu - not that I had it! I'd totally recommend this place.

Amidst the bustle and tat of Hastings lies a quiet retreat with great food and friendly service. The grilled fish makes a tastier change to the deep fat fried alternatives on offer elsewhere.

Eat here last week, made very welcome on arrival. The fish was probably the biggest and the tastiest I have eaten in a long time. The proprietor was very friendly and chatted to us for a long time. Would recommend.

My parents used to bring us here when we were toddlers (I'm in my 50's now) and it's great that the Seagull has endured all this time. We don't come here as often as we should, but on the bank holiday weekend when we came to Hastings we arrived with a party of 8. The fish and chips has always been good here, but I have to say that on this particular occasion it was simply outstanding. The batter on the fish was a lovely dark golden colour, and crispy. The chips were just like old fashioned home made - crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. When the dishes arrived you could tell visually that they were going to be good - they just looked right. The frying of the food was spot on as there was hardly a trace of oil left on the plates. All 8 meals were of consistent quality too. My one minor gripe is that the mushy peas were not included as part of the main dish and had to be ordered as a side, but then I suppose some people probably prefer that option. The fish and chips were fantastic value too at about £7.00 each. I hope that the Seagull can keep this quality up and I promise not to take so long before we make another visit!

We went into this restaurant because it was open, other places around it had already shut. I have to say the Rock and chips I had were the best I have tasted at the coast in a long time. My husband had a Cheeseburger which I have to say looked limp and unappetising. Staff were attentive and restaurant was clean and tidy. Would go again just for the fish & chips.

We stopped here for lunch - great menu choice, reasonable prices and food excellent. The staff are very friendly and there is extra seating upstairs which gives you great views overlooking the seafront.

Returned to the Seagull after a year plus new owners . And lost the charm food not as good as it used to be. And also the staff again less than friendly What a shame

Visited with family We had some very good food at a very decent price. Had the fish and chips, nice an clean good service. Definitely a place to recommend. Our first fish and chip this summer.

I live in Europe and really miss traditional fish and chips so when I'm back in the UK I always try and find some. Spending a few days in Hastings with my mother was the perfect opportunity. Hastings is full of fish restaurants but the Seagull caught my eye for some reason and I'm glad it did. The cod was fresh and cooked to perfection, the batter was deliciously crispy and the chips home made and boiling hot. Perfection - and only £7 each. We had another fish and chips in Rye that was more expensive and not a patch on this.

Fish & chips were excellent yet again! lovely crispy battered cod & yummy chips all with a nice pot of tea. never fails to deliver a yummy meal!!

There are numerous places for fish and chips at Hastings but one of my favourites is the Seagull restaurant right on the front opposite the boating lake. Fish is fresh daily and portions are enormous. The chips are crisp and very yummy. You can also get mushy peas, another favourite of mine. Service is prompt, the restaurant is clean and well presented but try and avoid bank holidays as you will often find a queue waiting to be seated.

Great food at a very reasonable price. No bones in my Cod and super chips.Service was first class as well.Very pleased

We thought we would give this Restaurant a try, glad we did as the Scampi and Chips was very tasty, and the chips were like home made, the lady who served us was very friendly and the place was very clean.Its opposite the Boating Lake, in the Old Town. We had cod and chips and whitebait.The cod was delicious,the batter a tad thick,the chips out of this world!!Staff were friendly and fast.The whitebait was not as fantastic as the fish and chips.Everything was clean,sauces all new,upstairs room beautiful atmospheric and airy.

We stopped into this little cafe for a small lunch whilst on holiday in Hastings. The food is basic, but nice. It's nice and clean and the staff are friendly.

Just nipped in for a couple of decaff coffees and found it a v nice place. Clean and bright. Good for wheelchair access too.

Out for a stroll around Hastings Old Town and feeling a bit peckish we happened to be passing the Seagull Restaurant. Having heard good things we took a closer look. Seemed quite popular - a good sign. Good quality furniture and lots of arty furnishings made the place bright and cheerful. A welcoming smile from the staff was the decider - we sat down for a light lunch. The menu is basic but that was just what we wanted and no more than you would expect from any of the eating places along the seafront - all aiming to attract hungry passing tourists. Food was good, cheap & cheerful and the service was very good - even as locals we would go again. Maybe next time we will try upstairs in the room with a view.

This small restaurant right on the sea front is ideally placed to accomodate locals and day trippers. The food is great and the staff offer a warm welcome along with good service. Recommended

Each year we visit Hastings for May Bank Holiday and each time we visit The Seagull restaurant for good food at a reasonable cost. We've not reviewed it for 2 or 3 years but can confirm that the standards are still high. 3 of us each had Cod, chips and mushy peas and were very pleased. The Cod was too big for the plate, more than enough chips and the hot mushy peas arrived in a separate large dish for each of us. All cooked to perfection. We booked a day early and requested table 15 which is upstairs in the bay window so gives a great view while eating. The staff are so friendly. The only reason for 4 rather than 5 points is the ambience is more café than restaurant I,e. tables and chairs, especially downstairs but we will be back next year.

Along the seafront, homely and pleasant atmosphere, very good fish and chips, friendly owner.All the beautiful pictures on display by local artist (including cards and art works in glass) can be purchased.

There are dozens of fish and chip restaurants in Hastings. We live not far away and often visit and this is one of - if not the best. As other reviews say the fish and chips are great. We turned up at the end of the day and our food was freshly cooked for us. The tea came in nice china mugs with a jug of milk. It's clean comfortable and best of all you won't leave smelling of frying.

Do not be seduced by the others! This is in the old town in the front but worth every extra step to find it. Just opposite crazy golf & car park.Local fresh fish cooked to order & served with really crispy chips that are fluffy inside. I love mushy peas & these were excellent.A small & prettily decorated environment with smoky helpful staff who ensure everything is ok then do not hover. They respond quickly & with a smoke to any request.Just going to find somewhere to sleep it off! Portions are generous.A great place for lunch.

We had a rather late lunch there today and it was really very good, Delicious gammon steak and all the trimmings, beautifully cooked individually and worth waiting for.the restaurant is spotless, the decoration very smart and imaginative and the seaside effect is very pleasing. the staff are pleasant and eager to please, I will go again any time and take a friend or two.Well down chef and your lovely staff keep up the good work and the keep the great food coming.

I enjoyed a wonderful meal here with friends. Very friendly staff and efficient service. I had cod and chips which were delicious, the best chips I've had in a long time. Would highly recommend.

We had an evening out with a large group- all the food was cooked fresh and was all served up quickly and with a smile. Everything was hot and perfectly cooked. Between us we had the battered and grilled fish, steak and gammon and everyone's food was delicious - and the portions were huge!! Everyone got what they ordered and didn't have to wait long. Great value, great atmosphere, great good - a must to visit!!

The chef and his was were nice enough but the food was awful. We were the only ones in the restaurant so felt too embarrassed to make an issue of it. I can honestly say it was the worst fish and chips I have ever had. We used to love it in this restaurant but won't be returning. I wonder if the owners should get some training on cooking and customer service?

Very family friendly. Fantastic food and service. Would highly recommend this restaurant for fish and chips. Also great to be able to choose a grilled option and other food available if you don't want fish. Will definitely return.

Friendly, clean and great atmosphere. The owner personally speaks to all clients, and the food is fab. The staff are friendly and welcoming. By prior arrangement, the Restaurant can cater for family events.

The restaurant is very clean, nicely set out and the service was good. The food was generally very good but was let down by little things such as the jacket potatoes being hard and the peas ordered as an extra were horrible. Overall the experience was good.

We visited early evening over the Easter holidays and as it was busy downstairs went up to the seating area upstairs. We were the only ones up there and it was a little chilly, plus some of the tables (including the one in the window where we sat) hadn't been cleared. The reason for this soon became apparent as, eventually, the waitress came upstairs to take our order and the poor thing was clearly not well enough to be working. She was so full of cold she could hardly breathe and was panting from the effort of climbling the stairs. This was a little worrying as we didn't want to come down with colds over Easter but we took a chance & ordered anyway (2 x cod & chips) and it arrived quickly and was very hot. Mine was cooked perfectly but my husband's fish was a little overcooked - it didn't spoil the meal though and all in all it was very nice & worth coming back again for. Thankfully we don't seem to have caught colds but I do think the management should have got someone to cover for the poor girl serving and sent her home as not only was it bad for her health to remain there but also for those eating who may have caught it from her.

Been coming to this restaurant for over 10 years and the fish and chips are great. I can't say that they are the best in Hastings but they are good and good value for money.

Quant little café/restaurant. Very reasonably priced and fish good and fresh. Friendly service. Would go again.

Tgoroughly enjoyed our late lunch there yesterday. Amazed at the size of a great prawn salad. Lots of prawns, plenty of sauce, nicely served decorative huge salad. Pinched some of my daughters chips and they were great also. All the sauces and mayo etc were in a nice little box already on the table and all the bottles were clean!!!

Friendly people, clean and the best fish and chips i have tasted for ages ! went for mothers day and my mum cant really eat much batter but they also did grilled fish with chips which was excellent! and a wonderful banana split!! Also one of my sons was away visiting a show in Birmingham and my other son was coming with us but was poorly despite this they gave all the mothers having a meal a loverley pot of small daffodils (narcissus?) and a few chocolates. Loverley place defiantly will be going back there, thankyou soo much xx

Visited The Seagull in October whilst on a day trip to Hastings. Every time we are this way it has to be this restaurant for cod and chips. The food is amazing,cod with the lightest,crispiest batter and perfectly cooked chips. Mushy peas are a must to have,large portion and very tasty. Yes you can get a similar meal for a pound cheaper along the front but certainly not as delicious. You get what you pay for and The Seagull is exceptional quality. Mouth is watering writing this review and we are making the 20 mile trip down later just for a fish and chip supper.

We recently visited Hasting and decided to have lunch at the Seagull Resturant which is on the front. There is a good choice of food and plenty of it. We throughly enjoyed our meal and the staff were very friendly. Will definitely eat there again next time we visit Hastings.

Went into the seagull for a meal for lunch after a blustery day on the seafront on new years eve. Service was prompt and polite, coffee and hot chocolate delicious! The cod and chips were amazing and my partners jacket potato was very tasty also. The cod actually melts in your mouth!! This is the fourth time we've been back and every time it never fails to please! Well worth a visit!

We went to the seagull for a quick dinner and the food and service was excellent. Would highly recommend this restaurant
