Fabulous Fish & Chips! Cooked to order by the welcoming charming team. They were a delight and I would definitely recommend it.

Its called the Fishy Fryer but cant find that on tripadvisor. Popped in on sat evening about 9pm, they cooked everything fresh and to order. Fish and chips were amazing!!!! Highly recommend.

Popped in late but that's no trouble because everything is fresh and clean - pleasant staff too. They deserve to do well!

You be hard pushed to get quality like this, lovely batter too, at a seafood restaurant - good sized portions

visited over the weekend and would not recommend to anyone! not only is the staff made up of (definitely underage) children, they are all very clearly suffering in the heat. running around, wearing black uniform, dealing with way too much at once. obviously not their fault it is down to bad management, who obviously have no respect for the people running the front of the business! food is also pretty average. i feel bad for the kids, sort this out as it’s not okay!

Food was fine but I was appalled to find the staff ( mostly children) were working in what I can only imagine was around 50 degree heat, no air con, fans broken and all black uniform. This heatwave is a danger to anyone anyway but allowing your workers to slave away in these conditions is atrocious ! Owner needs to get their priorities in order! Either close the shop or provide your workers with adequate care to manage the heat

I loved this chippy when it first opened, the chips were amazing! But last year they changed the oil they were cooking them in or something and they’ve gone from gorgeous crispy chips to oily soggy chips 😞

OMG. If you ever want to visit anywhere that nobody knows what they are doing then give this a try. I was asking for something on their menu and they kept saying they don't do it 🤣. Anyway in the end I ended up with a chip butty (see photos attached). I don't blame the staff they are clearly not trained thats management and owner. Also electric cable dangling freely off the wall where customers stand to pay. I wouldn't say avoid its free choice, but to the owners and management look after your staff get them trained and let them work in a safer environment.

Outstanding. I've probably had about 300 fish and chip shop meals. Maybe 30 different places, Whitby Scotland, London, St Albans etc. Tonight I honestly think I had the best one.

Unfortunately this restaurant has now lost our business for good and we are Redbourn local residents. The fish and chips are just average, however their online system managed by “square” appears to have been scammed as both my credit cards were rejected and one of them became blocked. This has never happened to me before so please be careful. I tried to telephone to let them know, and also place my order over the phone but no answer, I then sent an online message to them, but no answer.......ever. The good news however is I went to Godfreys in Harpenden for our family meal for 4 and we had the best fish and chips we have tasted in a long time - period. Sorry, The Old Cottage...... we won’t be returning to you again and you have now lost a local customer who has lived in Redbourn for almost 26 years

Recently moved to Redbourn and thought we'd try the local Fish and Chips. Ordered quickly and was asked to submit phone number so they could text us when ready 15 mins later. As a result could do a few things before receiving the message and returned to hot food. Fish cooked really well and delicious chips. Service with an energetic but friendly smile. Will never visit Godfrey's in Harpenden (smug, underwhelming and wait forever in a queue) again...

Best fish and chips we have had in a long time. Non greasy and fresh and crispy Haddock and chips and it was piping hot too. They also offer a choice of free sauces with your meal. We will be back again very soon

It's not often I have a takeaway and even rarer it's fish and chips. This place does a good job though. Very tasty and hot enough for when you get home. Worth a visit if you like a good fish and chip shop.

Absolutely furious. Their website advertised as being open until 9:30 p.m tonight (Saturday). I drove to the shop, got parked with difficulty, walked up the High Street only to find that the shop was closed completely. It didn’t look as though it had opened at all tonight. I won’t be risking this again. I ended up driving to Harpenden.

First the good news - The Old Cottage Fish and Chips has re-opened after being closed for several weeks and some of the staff are back. However, things have changed. Gone is the home made tartare sauce and it seemed to me that the portions were less generous than before and not as tasty. I am hoping it was just an off night. The food used to be the best around. For that reason, I will certainly give it another go.

This place seems to have gone downhill recently - the phone hasn't worked for ages so thought we would take a trip there as used to be worth the trip. Portions are smaller, fish and chips both not as crispy as before and there was a long black hair in my chips which was really off putting. Wont be going back which is a shame.

Best fish and chips by far, fresh food cooked really well by friendly staff, huge portions. If you live near Redbourn so worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

Since reopening as the Old Cottage the quality and service of fish and chips here has been first rate. Fish is cooked fresh to order so expect to wait a few minutes. There is usually a paperr to read and often small plates of free trips to eat while you are waiting. Portions are generous, we normally manage ine fish anf med chips between 2. They also offer some free accompanying sauces. We are very regular users.

Got my handmade home baked steak and kidney pie home to find out that it was just a pukka pie. If I’d known I’d have got a decent pie from the coop, I expected more for £4.50.The dog enjoyed it, so that’s why it gets 2 stars.

This site has been home to several fish and chip establishments but none equal to now. The portions are very generous, the produce fresh and tasty, the staff friendly and the choice extensive. I’m particularly fond of an establishment that serves halloumi which this one does. Before our family would have to travel to Harpenden to godfrey’s as that was the best local fish shop, that is no longer the case.

It was a cold December evening, and I was all alone at home. I was playing some fortnite and suddenly had a rush of sensational fluids through my body. It was due to my phat craving for a fresh cottage fish and chips. I sat there and thought, does my piggy body need a deep fried cod. Then I got on to my tricycle and peddled my stubby little legs as fast as I could. As I approached this haven of delicious food I started to get stronger and stronger smells giving me the power to cycle as fast as I could. I threw my bike down and sprinted into this dreamy shop where I was greeted by strong young men flashing their fish and chip hats. I then proceeded to 1 pickled egg and a single chip. It was enough to satisfy a god. I washed these flavoursome substances down my throat with some trusty coke zero from the og shop Cooperative. Better then that dirty shop nisa. The next day I went to Harpenden to visit Godfrinos (big up luke and JT). I ordered a fish and chips. Never had such bad poo in my life, basically tasted like what came out.

I recently visited the town of Redbourne and came across this quaint fish and chip shop, the staff were very friendly but most importantly the food was fantastic! I never thought fish and chips could taste so good! I will be visiting again soon!

The chips are always cooked perfectly, the portions are very generous and the staff are very friendly. Deep fried hallomi is AMAZING

We’d given up on fish and chips until we found this place. We live quite close and have seen it change hands many times. The new owners really know what they’re doing . The fish is really meaty the batter is crisp and the chips are well done, perfect!!!! If you’re getting a takeaway it’s served in boxes so when you get it home it hasn’t gone all soggy. The coast used to be the place to get decent fish and chips, now it’s Redbourn. Keep up the good work!!!!!!

Don't usually go through the High Street but was returning from Markyate and fancied some fish and chips. the place is now called the Old Cottage really good service lovely fresh fish and chips cooked to order its not left heated. Extremely large portion. Nice touch or free sauce included either Mayo/tomato/sweet chilli will definitely try again lets hope that it gets the custom. Well done.

I don’t normally do reviews but really think these guys deserve it. Consistent amazing chips, tasty and fresh fish. Quick, friendly and free sauces on the side. What more can you ask from your local chippy!

New owners (now called The Old Cottage), have really managed to turn this local place around.

I have always liked it here but the new owners have hit the nail on the head since changing to Old Cottage. Very friendly staff, couldnt do more to make your wait a better experience. Food is consistently good, huge portions and they offer free tartar sauce or humous...a nice little touch. I couldn't recommend this place more. Really hope they are around for a long time.

Just a quick one. New owners in town for the fish and chip shop. I wouldn't eat friends m there before as it was not nice at all. Now there are new owners and my god have they got it right. The chips are bang on as is all the ready cooked stuff, savaloys and pies, the rest is all cooked fresh to order and soon hopefully they will take phone orders. On the whole top quality proper English grub. Make Friday's what they were get down there and say hi to them.

Vivimos en el cercano pueblo de Markyate y somos muy afortunados de tener un excelente pescado n chips justo aquí en el pueblo. Redbourn está a unas pocas millas de distancia, así que algunos sin duda o cordura, conducir a Redbourn con una buena opción en sí misma markyate. Sin embargo, no hay duda de que la sal marina es sin duda una mejora en una muy buena "fish and chips". Sal de Mar, ofrecen una línea regular, bien escocés eglefino. Fuimos para un bocado rápido para comer y nos sentamos en su cena de mini al lado. Teníamos abadejo con aros de cebolla y disfrutamos tanto. Hubiera sido mejor si el calentador funcionaba. ya que es una comida para llevar que sugiero que lleve su propio cubiertos. Nos aconsejan que más iluminación alo es poner así que puedes ver lo que se está comiendo

Ordered cod and chips, took 35 mins to cook, and the chips was over cooked as well as the batter on the cod, staff very unfriendly, will not be returning.

Very tasty, good portions, lots of fish and not just batter, hot and cooked fresh while you wait, first class, will be going back.

Ordered food here on a Saturday night. Wasn't too busy so didn't have long to wait whilst they cook my fish fresh. Chips were chunky (packet rather than cut fresh) which I'm not normally a great fan of but lovely and crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the centre. Fish was equally good, nice size and well cooked. There was a lot of residual, solid fat when I took it out the box once home but didn't impact on taste.

We have been doing 'fish and chip Friday ' lunch for a while and while I remember some fluctuations about year ago the fish and chips on Friday lunchtimes has been consistently good. Great crisp batter, fresh quality fish and good chips

I have moved a bit nearer to Redbourn and this shop is geographically better for me to visit rather than my other previous sought out fish and chip shops.I called ahead and ordered a large cod and it was all ready for me when I arrived and looked great . However once I started cutting it I realised the fish was really meaty and dense and had a sinuous texture running through it. Maybe it was just a bad cut but not nice, I expect cod to be light and flaky . Not a good first experience .

This is a take away fish and chip shop that has a small room at the side with seating for 8 people who wish to eat in. The fish is beautifully cooked with crisp batter and the portions are large. As well as the usual menu there is also a small blackboard with 'fish of the day' such as tempura prawns. The service is exceptional.

Both the fish and the chips were crisp and fresh tasting and the service was courteous. One large portion of chips was more than enough for two people.

Since the original owners vanished this establishment has gone slowly downhill. I used to be able to get soft on the inside, crispy on the outside, delicious golden-brown chips from here, but now they are pale yet overcooked, in old oil that's obviously far too cold. The fish is overcooked and rubbery, sometimes they refuse to cook things from the menu saying "we don't do that" (the Hawaiian burger), and today I'm sure my daughter's chicken was off! It just tasted wrong! AND they currently have a food hygiene rating of ZERO!!!

Redbourn has waited a long time for a good fish and chip shop and when sea salt opened it was top quality. I was born and bread in a fish and chip shop and my plea to the owners is quality not quantity make the fish "special" and you do not have to fill the box with chips to make up for it. I disagree with anyone who says it's not worth the wait if it's good but please don't let the quality drop which unfortunately is what happened on my last visit

my husband had the OAP portion of cod and chips @ £4.50 and i (who doesnt eat fish had chicken pieces with chips @ £3.75 a portion.both servings were freshly fried including the chips.when we got them home 5 mins later they were delicious . the portions are generous and you do have to ask for not too many chips unless you love chips.altogether a very good meal experience.

Go here quite often as its just up the road from where we live in woodhall farm.the portion sizes are huge and the fish and chicken is always of a great quality.The only bug bear is if you order fish and chips you dont get many chips as the fish is always so big it takes up all the room in the box - ask for them separately as you pay for the chips separately anyway :o)The service has definitely improved as well compared to that of a few months ago where the staff seemed quite slow.

Been in Redbourn for some work and asked some people about best food shop in town. I was told to try fish and chips from this shop. I must say very crispy and taste food. I went there in the afternoon. This guy working there is very friendly and soft spoken. Best part is food was fresh. i personally liked it very much in there. keep the good work going please. These people do the best fish 'n' chips in the area and it is worth the drive over from Harpenden. Everything is crisp and golden compared to some nearby who serve soggy greasy batter and chips. In thre summer you can park up on the nearby common and take in a game of cricket.

Service is hit and miss, the girls are very friendly who work there but there are a couple of indian guys who aren't so helpful, but fish and chips are delicious.

Staff is very rude. Fish and chips are not up to standard, the fish was raw. The place was filthy, if you eat in there, be warn that you will eat on a dirty table.

Fish is always cooked fresh, batter is crisp and properly cooked (although i usually leave the batter from other fish shops) with Sea Salt I enjoy the thin delicious coating. Chips are golden brown and the portions extremely generous. We tend to buy one portion for the two of us and this is plenty. Nice extra touches such as lemon and tartare sauce offered.

Just come back from a holiday and needed a quick dinner- so glad Sea Salt is in the village! Crispy juicy fish and crunchy chips- perfect! Im used to Northern fish and chips which are usually the best as they're cooked in lard (heart attack!) but these are great. Just miffed I forgot the tartare sauce!!

It’s so hard getting a good fish and chip shop; I knew I should have cancelled my order when I noticed the chicken and sausages being cooked in the same fryer fat as the Fish.Thought I would give it a go, but it was so bad I felt sick. Why do these new fish and chip shops think they can produce good fish and chips when they fry every other item in the same fryer and get the mix or all the meaty things they sell?Anyway I will not be going again.A good tip for Fish and Chip shops is copy a good Seaside Fish and Chip shop that only sells what they advertise.

I live in Redbourn and am a regular at sea salt. Portions are always large. Food is always cooked freshly so there can be a small wait, but well worth it. Be sure to ask for the delicious home made tartare sauce!

I don't think it's fair that this place can rely on the previous owners good reputation of great food and generous portion sizes. I revisited Sea Salt in early June after eating there last year and I am quite simply appalled at drop in standards. Not only the drastic reduction in portion sizes but the quality of food. Very soggy and almost inedible batter on the measily piece of fish accompanied by some of the worst chips ive ever been served; undercooked and tasting very unpleasant. I assume the oil they use for cooking is not changed frequently enough. I wouldn't bother, id suggest either Harpenden or St Albans for some edible fish and chips.

Hi everyoneI rarely feel the need to write these reviews but after my experience this evening I felt I had to warn people. I decided to treat my children to fish hand ship,upon arriving home the potions size and quality was terrible I called and spoke to the owner whom i have to say was most unhelpful and quite rude to say the least ......I will not be using them again.

Quite possibly the tastiest fish and chips around here. Good value as well as the portions are huge. We go here for lunch once/twice a month but the only downfall is the speed of the food as half your lunch break is spent waiting... Don't get me wrong, it's worth the wait but if you are short on time then call in first.

haven't eaten in the restaurant but have the fish and chips at least once a week. Great value, big portions, served in boxes , you can even have lemon and tartare sauce.

Look you can have your standard fish and chips but as far as I am concerned the best thing about Sea Salt is the specials they always have on - scampi, calamari, etc. - and the mushy peas!!I think serving it in a box makes all the difference - the chips are crispy when you get the home and the batter crisp.Just what the village needed.

I buy fish and chips for my boys on a weekly basis on my way back from swimming lessons, every week I ring through my order 15 mins before I arrive as the boys are usually starving, and unfortunately more times that not they haven't started cooking it by the time I arrive. Though the food is good the service leaves a lot to be desired and the portion sizes are getting smaller and smaller.

It was our first visit to Sea Salt, and while I would agree the service was slow, the fish and chips (and fresh scraps...) where excellent.We will be back for more!

A lovely old fashioned shop, well used by locals. The fish is in a tasty, crunchy batter, the fish is beautifully cooked. Chips, well, loads of them and superb. Staff are friendly and service is quick. We found a piece of fish each and just one serve of chips was plenty for 2 people. Mushy peas are homemade and yummy. Located in the high street opposite a free car park.

Thankfully, have been back two or three times and normal service has been resumed: fish was fresh and freshly cooked; chips are excellent. Service from the young "chatty" girls was fine.

Visited for a sat night take away, the place has recently changed management and although service was slow (girls behind the counter chatting too much) the fish and chips were freshly cooked while we waited. Chips were awesome! Will definitely go again.

As you can see from my previous review, I was very, very disappointed with the changes made at Sea Salt - but after two begrudging visits after saying 'never again' I wanted to write to say how lovely my food was last night. A couple of weeks ago I had the curry sauce which was FABULOUS! I am even considering buying it to pour over some chicken I've cooked at home (and passing it off as my own!) Last night my husband was desperate for fish and chips so I decided to bite the bullet and join him - and what a lovely treat I had. Service was quick and friendly, fish freshly cooked, offered lemon and homemade tartar sauce which was delicious. A happy customer once again!

Shorly after I posted my last review for Sea Salt we popped in for a fish and chip supper. We were so surprised and disappointed with the difference in our meal. The price was higher, portions were considerably smaller and the quality was nowhere near as good. Whats that all about: More money for less food???We agreed we wouldn't go back and we'd have to resort to driving to the nearest town for our fish suppers in the future. After a week or so I received a flyer through the door for Sea Salt saying they were under new management. That would explain things. Such shame.

This was an overwhelming success when it first opened. It was a gourmet fush and chip shop, with lemon served with the fish, tripke cooked chips and generous portions. Under new mgt now and you get the impression that theryre maximising profit & cutting corners.no lemon with the fish and they wanted to charge 80p for a sachet of tartar sauce to go with the gourmet scampi. Its cheap behaviour! Take it back to what it was if you wish to keep your regulars

As you can see from my previous review I thought this village chippy was excellent.However the portion sizes have changed dramatically: to the point where we made our regular order (we'd worked out you needed to order less so we didn't throw it away) and there wasn't enough food for the family !! Absolutely true we had to put some fish fingers under the grill!The fish isn't the same quality as before it's just not as fresh. It is better to have the option of small or large but the small size is really only enough to be a child's portion. The chips are still very good and much better than anywhere else in the surrounding towns and villages.The service is still pretty good: still go there once a week as it's convenient - it's just a real shame it's gone from being a really great chippy back to just average.

This used to be a really fabulous place for fish and chips - we had family down from Whitby area, where the famous Magpie Restaurant is, and the quality stunned them! Sadly now we've had it twice since the new management a couple months ago and it's just not the same - why, oh why, take over such a popular, fab place and change it for the worse? People are not daft! Just had a leaflet through door, so obviously needing to advertise now!!! Save money on advertising and go back to how it used to be - "Simples" !!! On a plus side, as it's not as good now, we don't have it much (was creeping towards every single friday night plus the occasional tuesday!) so the waist-line is grateful! Shame though :(

Just bought home fish and chips and very disappointed that the portion sizes have halved yet the cost has risen. Fortunately that it tasted ok. So will not be visiting as often as in the past.

The original place was probably the best chip shop north of the sea side now it's changed hands and food taste, quality and portion size are not as good.

Great quality food and the portions are plentiful. Not the cheapest but because the portions are so huge we tend to order less and share so works out better value. Fish and Chips was a rare treat for us as we had to drive out of the village to the town for it. Now Sea Salt is open we go rather more often than we should! This is just what Redbourn needed!

We live in red ours and are lucky as sea salt do the best fish and chips I have tasted. Wish they were open on Sundays as really fancy fish and chips.

Well worth travelling here for your fish and chips. We live in St Albans and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. So good they stay hot and crispy on the journey back. Best I've ever had in the UK....

I have been here a few times since it opened some months ago. The fish is always very fresh and the batter is crispy and tasty. The chips are consistently high standard. The portions are huge: two large chips served 5 of us tonight and the cod is always jumbo - enough for two adults.The service has been a bit variable since opening but this seems to have been sorted out the last couple of times I've been there and the last few times (mostly at weekends) the staff are friendly and welcoming. At busy times you do have to wait outside.My only small complaint is if you just want a bag of chips, it's a bit slow. All meals are cooked to order, in the order they're received. So, even if you just want just a portion of chips, you have to wait for all the other big orders before you, which can be a bit frustrating.The quality of the food far outweighs the minor issues so overall a superb local chip shop which is highly recommended.

The portions are large , and one normally has to queue as all items are cooked to order. They are packed in purpose built card board containers which prevents the chips from becoming soggy. These are the best shop bought fish & chips I have tasted in the UK, as chips are the correct degree of crispness and the fishis not over battered . They have just introduced a medium portion as their standard portion is nearly enough for two. No credit cards. Friendly, efficient mainly young staff who care about service

The fish is fresh, huge, crispy, tasty and great value. The chips are second to none, probably the best I have had in the UK in the 8 years I have been here. The service is quick and courteous. I drive from Harpenden and always park on the High Street where there is always parking. Definitely worth the trip, way better than Jack's, and even better than the new Godfrey's.
