We heard this was a very good restaurant and chose it for a birthday celebration while visiting Edinburgh. The restaurant is small and as we were trying to take our seats, a woman came in with a large dog and made it impossible for us to get to our seats for several awkward minutes. The dog yelped periodically during our meal. Just off the dining area there is a tiny children's play area. What a ridiculous idea! The night we were at the restaurant, the children in the playroom were screaming and it made it impossible to have a conversation. I don't know if the staff was ever going to say something to the parents, but when it was really unbearable, we asked if something could be done. After a staff member said something to the parents, the noise calmed down a bit, but never entirely. The food was good, but the unpleasant ambiance of a yelping dog and screaming children took away greatly from our experience. If we wanted this, we would go to McDonald's. This is not an inexpensive restaurant and we expected more.

We booked a table for dinner in advance and made our way to the restaurant via a short taxi ride. The restaurant is quite cute and the I loved the charm of the decor. The service was very professional and 'real'. I got the scallop appetizer and the fish pie main--yum. My drink was the Champagne-Germain; very nice option. Our dessert was a special I believe and was equally enjoyable. Overall, we loved the professional service and the charming homey atmosphere coupled with the tasty food options.

We attended at 6pm on a Wednesday evening. It was already busy inside and our table was in a corner. We had a delicious meal and it was one of the highlights of our trip. I started with the pork terrine and piccalilli. My fiance had girolle mushrooms on toast with a poached egg. Both very good. I had the hot smoked salmon salad and chips for main. My fiance had the fish pie. He said the pie was amazing! Full of fish and boiled egg and topped with lovely mash. For dessert I had the brownie special - best brownie I have ever had! It's not the cheapest place but we had a great dinner and would recommend.

Scran & Scallie was a wonderful place for our last dinner in Edinburgh. Our waiter (who has an amazing Nike shoe game!) was knowledgeable and helpful as he guided us through the menu options. We loved the appetizers (especially the Haggis!) and all of our entrees. Many of us had the meat pie, and we would totally have it again! The environment was lively and fun, giving us a wonderful evening to remember. Would totally recommend!

Visited on a brief trip to Edinburgh and so pleased we did! Service by Sacha was excellent, great window seat to view the restaurant and see what everyone else was having to eat! Very relaxed atmosphere and lovely experience. Our food arrived in timely fashion with enough time between courses, was piping hot and delicious! We had haggis and pork terrine for starters, fish pie and the pork special for mains. The fish pie was the best I have tasted with chunky haddock, salmon and prawns. It does have hard boiled egg in it, which was a different recipe to fish pies I have previously eaten and very tasty. Deserts were sticky toffee pudding and vanilla rice pudding. Will definitely return when next in Edinburgh. Thanks for a great evening.

We were visiting edinburgh and revisited this restaurant, however since last visit a couple of years ago it’s gone seriously downhill……it’s basically living on past glories. Our table had been crammed into the entrance area ,along with others we were seated with our backs up against a cold brick wall, the seats at the other side of the table were constantly bumped by people squeezing past, not their fault. A bottle of wine starts at £40+, the food was ok but no better than a cafe ,very limited menu . Definitely not a special venue, better to go to the very nice hotel opposite.

Excellent restaurant, great service, good atmosphere. This is our second visit, we were impressed on our first and so went back the next time we visited Edinburgh. Great, varied menu, well priced toward the upper end of want you would want to pay but definitely competitive. It's all in the service for us (the food has to be good too and most places get that right) but the service is what makes a good restaurant stand out from the crowd and The Scran and Scallie delivered that for us on the day. We had an inexperienced server to start with but he was soon replaced with a more experienced person who was very good. NB: We had clear view of the kitchen from where we were sitting; a note to to the manager: you might want to check on some of your kitchen staff's food handling practices.

Never disappoints. The jewel in Tom Kitchin’s culinary crown. However, less gastro ‘pub’ and more brasserie as it looks like the normally cost & very Scottish bar has been converted for additional dining due to Covid restrictions. So sadly this time and aperitif & digestive was not an option. But one thing or should I say person that hasn’t changed is our waiter/maitre d’ Andrew. He was as fantastic as ever. He is the restaurant’s secret weapon along with its sauces which bring together every dish in a unique way.If you want a value for money Michelin level Scottish gastro experience then this is the spot for you.

The “Kitchen” was booked up until November, so as an alternative we tried his Edinburgh gastropub. We were not disappointed. More a restaurant, but with a pub like character it served high class pub classics that were well presented and had plenty of flavour. Service was excellent. A good find!

Scran & Scallie is Tom Kitchin’s gastro-pub. It has some pub classics which are nicely cooked, but not sufficiently tasty to justify more than £16. There are some more interesting starters and mains, although all 3 that we tried got mediocre responses or were cleared up half eaten. Classics such as steak pies came without chips, but they could be added on for a mere £5 for a small tin. Worst of all though were the 2 steaks we ordered which had pretentions of fine dining at £39 each but were only judged to be “ok” (with one not fully eaten since it was cooked substantially rarer than requested). Our waiter was surly and borderline rude. When asked for a children’s menu, I was told there was not one (there was), and that it was just smaller portions of the bar menu (it wasn’t).Overall, it is above-average for pub food, and just-average for a gastro-pub. However, the prices are at best dismal, and at worst ‘completely taking the urine’. Our table of 8 reached a unanimous conclusion of “I don’t think we will be going back there again”.

Not content with visiting Kitchin by Tom Kitchin we also visited this fabulous place. Nestled in the much gentrified Stockbridge area of Edinburgh it rubs shoulders with oh-so-cool gift shops and top end charity shops. The menu is also suitably low key but top notch. As with Kitchin the bread is to die for and accompanied with the most excellent smoked salmon it kicks off the meal perfectly. Fish and chips was a popular choice at our table although I went for the steak and ale pie. The crust formed a perfect dome over succulent slow cooked steak. I pierced a hole in it and stuffed it with the side of hispi cabbage. Kedgeree, spelling?, was on for our international guest. It came with a twist that involved Pearl barley instead of rice. We had some suitably rich and sticky desserts before rolling ourselves back out into the fringe. No excursion to Stockbridge is complete with a meal here.

In all our visits to Edinburgh we had never stopped off in Stockbridge where Scran & Scallie is based. What a lovely ‘village feel’ Stockbridge has with it’s independent shops and boutiques and artisan market on a Sunday. Lovely for a post/pre-lunch stroll. We had a table for 4 at the Scran & Scallie which was still doing swift business at 2.30pm. We were seated in an alcove which on one hand was cosy for us as a table but on the other hand prevented people watching! Ordered Orkney scallops with chicory and sauce virtue to start - these were absolutely delicious, perhaps the nicest scallops I’ve ever eaten. We were off to a good start. Then enjoyed the fish and chips but was so full that couldn’t tackle a pudding. However the downside was the wait for our food which was very long. The waitress knocked off a couple of drinks as an apology. Overall a very good experience. Also dog friendly if we wanted to bring your mutt!

Where to start. Quite easily the worse dining experience I’ve ever had. Marketed as a pub but with fine dining prices, the atmosphere and overall experience does not add up. 45 mins after sitting down, our aperitif arrived. The starter came around a minute after. We had hoped to enjoy our aperitif and then have a glass of white wine with our starter later. My dish was 18 pound for 2 scallops. It was outrageously over priced and very, very bland. My husband’s dish was smoked salmon was again seriously over priced for the three small slices and nothing at all outstanding for the price that was charged. I fully understand Covid has effected the hospitality industry but this is just a blatant piss take. We dined in Simon Rogan’s Henrock 2 days prior with identical prices, but with an impeccable service and absolutely delicious and interesting food. This place cannot boast it has a great atmosphere, service or even food. Not worth a visit.

I had kedgeree which was rich and tasty followed by the caramelised cream which was, no exaggeration, the best pudding I think I've ever had! My daughter (5) had a burger and chips which she demolished followed by chocolate ice cream - again disappeared (she can be a dawdler over food) and my husband had sea trout followed by cheesecake both of which he loved. Started pretty well. The scallops were small and beautifully sweet, the sauce vierge giving a citrus balance, though the chicory leaves overwhelmed it all a little. His mushroom and blue cheese gnocchi was "nothing special", and whilst my steak pie packed a real punch of flavour, it wasn't a pie. It was a bowl of stew with a thin pastry lid. £5 for under seasoned and un-buttery mash is a mickey take (it wasn't, but could easily have been the frozen type) and £4.75 for a small bowl of boiled hispi cabbage even more so. Not even a little bacon, or butter to liven it up. Just sitting in it's own water. The biggest issue, however, is that they are taking bookings for 9pm, when the place has to be emptied at 10:30. We were incredibly rushed - they brought the dessert menu when we were still half way through mains. We declined, and had to neck the last of our Merlot in order to get out. Not that the food warranted a long slow appreciation.Your greed is showing here, Tom, and whilst the Stockbridge folk will happily pay anything for anything, it doesn't do your image any good whatsoever.

We were drawn to this pub due to its connection to Tom Kitchin when looking for somewhere to eat in Edinburgh. There are clearly some very good dishes on the menu but there is no justification for the prices charged. My husband's wagyu beef burger was good but I was unimpressed with my steak pie. Like other reviewers I was taken aback, to say the least, to find if I wanted chips or mash that would cost another. £5/4.75 Other vegetables were £4.75. That meant pie, chips and veg. would cost £27.25. Hmm. The pie was clearly home made, of course, but to be honest I've had better for half the price. The wine mark up is huge. I appreciate this is where profit is made but the same £41.50 Chilean Merlot we ordered retails at £10 (same year) - the pub must be able to buy it for even less than this. If you ask for tap water, by the way, don't expect it to be chilled. The service was friendly but we felt a bit rushed to order. This wasn't the fault of the serving staff as they had to get us out after an hour and a half. Fortunately we didn't want a dessert as we'd have been a bit pushed for time.In our opinion, the main issue with this pub is it is not value for money. If you are happy with being overcharged there are clearly some good dishes to be had but sadly, we feel it is relying on people spotting the name "Kitchin." A pity.

3 may be a little harsh but I expected so much more from this restaurant. The starters are really over priced for what is essentially pub food. However, the rabbit pate was really nice! Main course - my steak pie was nice bur the menu nor the waiter told me it had mushrooms in it - one food I dislike. The sausages were over cooked and very average for a high end pub. And the amount of gravy that came with them was pathetic to say the least - you want your gravy covering the meat and mash! Desert was very good but again, over priced. Waiter was friendly and the place was nicely done out with good ambience.

I don’t know why I keep going back hoping the service and the food will be better than the last time! Apart from the overpriced food which would be fine if it matched up to the quality of food but it’s far from it. I decided to book last minute for lunch to have a wee celebration with my daughter finishing her exzams. Couldn’t have chosen a worse place. Not going back again. Booked for 1.30. Served food close to 2.30. Apology at 2.15 from floor staff to say the chef overcooked the fish and chips. Food arrived almost an hour from arriving which was fish and chips and steak pie. How a decent chef can over cook fish and chips! It’s not the hardest thing to cook in a fryer for a chef in a restaurant surely. Then the steak pie dry and tasteless meat was chewy and hard and overpriced well and truly. Wasn’t even busy when we arrived which makes me think we had been forgotten about. Not a happy customer I think your restaurant is totally over rated and completely overpriced for below average food. I would rather have gone next door to Francos fish and chip shop and treated my daughter there and my fish and chips made in 5 minutes for half the price. We did receive an apology but quite rightly so. Couldn’t have desert which was what my daughter really wanted. But really didn’t want to stay for the next disaster and over priced sticky toffee pudding!

Call me old fashioned. I think less about price and more about value. No problem with that. But what is it about this place? A £300 bill for four, fine. A high table by the bar, that’s ok, it was fair in terms of our current safety requirements. Two minutes after sitting down I was asked to order. Can we have a drink first? I didn’t thank that request was unreasonable. I noted that there was a steak of the day, I had to make the point of asking what that was. My wife ordered fillet. It in Itself was ok. I then had to follow the waitress and ask if I could purchase a bottle of wine! We were acutely aware of the time restrictions on our table, we were bang on time, didn’t waste much time ordering although perhaps having a drink while our party of four decided on food was a tad unfair for a customer to expect. We felt as though we were rushed out and were frankly an inconvenience. Sad but true.

A starter of asparagus, very tender, featured wild garlic Hollandaise and also some intense Bonnet (a cheese from Ayrshire). The other starter was the classic plump Orkney scallop, seared and coming with peas, leaves and pancetta. And Talking about plumpness, how about the lovely pork cheeks and the Highland Wagyu burger for mains: not food for a diet, but wonderful! The delicious conclusion was a very well made rhubarb Savarin.Obviously not the cheapest pub food around, but considering the extremely high quality of produce and cooking, prices are fair.

Fuimos a almorzar, menú fijo.

Finalmente logré llegar a Scran y Scallie.

This is a gastropub, more gastro than pub, where you can enjoy truly top quality produce, essentially at the level of what you would find in Michelin starred venues (and sometimes better...), but at reasonable prices and in an informal atmosphere. The scallops, the lobster, the grouse we had last time were the plumpest and (the seafood) the freshest you will find anywhere. And cooked with the skill and precision you expect from the top of the profession. The desserts, a cheesecake and a sticky toffee pudding were also top notch. In sum: what a wonderful lunch!Service is informal and friendly, but also attentive and efficient. The drink list is very strong on beers - this is actually the most "pub" aspect- whereas the wine list suffers a bit from the general restaurant tendency to impose aggressive markups. As for food, obviously you shouldn't expect the prices of your regular pub, but, to repeat, this is definitely no ordinary pub. Indeed for me it is perhaps the top place I know anywhere for traditional Scottish/British fare. For the quality (but also the quantity is not mean at all!) I actually I find them very good value.

Food/drink is pricey and is good but not Michelin level. Staff are friendly and there is an efficient system in place when entering etc. One thing I do not like are dogs in restaurants. When we went it seemed every second person who came in had their dog with them.

My husband and I went for lunch on our way home from a holiday in the highlands. We were seen to our table by a lovely lady. I can’t wear a mask for medical reasons and she was very understanding and even said it must be hard, this was greatly appreciated and made me feel comfortable. My husband chose the four course set menu and I had a burger. Every course was a hit and the flavours complimented each other perfectly. The burger was tender and cooked to perfection. Had the sticky toffee pudding and it’s the best I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot over the years!! Staff were great and the food did not let us down and the prices are spot on. Wish we lived closer so we could go more often

The food was pretty good, but the service was poor. We were all packed into a small space, the forgot our drinks order, then brought us someone elses and we had to keep chasing to get ours. After main course we were hassled to order desert immediately even though we still had over an hour to go before we had to vacate the table. We did watch them bringing out food to empty tables and wrong dishes to people, it seemed like a lack of communication all round. Then finally when we asked them to order us a TAXI, we waited ages, chased them and then found out the driver had been there 15mins and been in the restaurant 3 times to find out where we were. Given the price I would have expected better. Very happy to pay if you get the service.

My wife and I were looking forward to our visit to this restaurant...why??We were put into a corner alcove type room that seated 3 tables fine and were then just ignored. The staff could not tell us any more about the food other than the description that was on the menu. The food was nothing spectacular and although we expected a pub type cuisine we have had far better in many of the pubs around Edinburgh at nothing close to the prices they were charging. My Salmon starter at £13 was basic and again had far nicer elsewhere and my roast cod main at £24 was grossly overpriced. The staff that were very good at ignoring us actually passed me the card payment machine with "Gratuity" message on the front screen. Joke.

The food was so good - I had the fish and chips and my partner had the steak pie. the desserts were just as good - apple crumble souffle to die for and the sticky toffee pudding was amazing. The staff were really friendly and couldn't be more helpful - Andy was really attentive to the right levels. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Highly recommend.

Having been wanting to come here for quite some time we were really excited for our visit. My partner enjoyed his spinach soup and gnocchi and I agreed that the gnocchi tasted gorgeous but the soup for me was a little salty. There were no vegetarian options on the lunch menu so he was forced to order from the the main menu.I had scallops for starter which although tasted nice, was only given 3. I’ve definitely paid less for better flavours and a larger quantity. Even another 2 would have been reasonable for £17.50! The steak pie was the most disappointing of all. I make a better one myself. £17! Chewy, flavourless meat, basic carrots and a real lack of anything special or signature. I fed this back to a member of staff and basically received zero response other than a blank stare and an unapologetic “ok”. Definitely not what I would have expected from an establishment like this. Overhyped and overpriced. Just as well we got £20 off the final bill for the eat out to help out deal. Especially after paying £6 for a non-alcoholic cocktail. I hadn’t even clocked the price until the bill came along. That was more than my partners pint! I wouldn’t revisit again.

The food was OK, at best, but in no way could they justify their prices for what was on offer. The young lady that greeted us at the start was condescending and when I raised an issue with the lack of contents in the Scran Steal Pie and how salty it was I was ignored. As a family we were very taken aback as to how expensive Scan & Scallie are for what is on offer. Bill came to nearly £200 to "feed" six people and that was with no alcohol. All came away hungry as well. Would never go back. £5 for a bottle of water. £3.50 for a small bottle of cake. Really. Not even offered chips with the Scran stake pie. Just the pie with burnt crust and nearly no contents. suggest to avoid.

We only managed to book a table at 5pm mid-week - in this restaurant located in Stockbridge, but the restaurant filled up very quickly. We had a great time, served by a friendly and helpful waiter. The menu was rich enough to satisfy both parents and teenagers in our party, with both classics and original ideas. The food is absolutely lovely: the scallops were cooked to perfection ; the seafood raviolis were delicious ; the langoustine was full of flavours ; the sticky toffee pudding had enormous success. Very happy, thank you.

Excellent dinner, chicken liver parfait always lovely. My son had the seafood ravioli with consommé, which he loved. Then pearl barley kedgeree, dense, but delicious and the egg on top was perfect. Gnocchi blue cheese gratin went down a treat. All in all a good meal with a delicious Côte du Rhône to accompany it. Staff on point with Covid guidance too. Had lunch here and was really impressed with the food. Everything was superbly cooked and really tasty and the staff were excellent. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was a particular highlight and I would recommend you leave some room to give it a go. Our daughter liked the little playroom which kept her on side during the meal as well. Wine prices are a little on the high side but overall we had a superb meal.

Overall we had a good time during our visit to the scran and scallie. We visited on a Wednesday during the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme so was busy and we couldn’t get a table until 9.45pm (even booking in advance). Would recommend booking as soon as possible if you know you would like to go. We had scallops to start which were good. Then there was a little bit of confusion on the mains - my boyfriend had asked for the steak but was bought the steak pie. We did think it was a little strange when ordering that he hadn’t been asked how it would like the steak - so was just down to misunderstanding. When we notified staff it was sorted efficiently. However it did mean we ended up eating our mains separately which is just slightly odd way of having dinner out. We ordered sticky toffee pudding for dessert to share and this was taken off our bill as a sorry for confusion which we were happy with.Overall meal cost around £90 for 2 people having 2 courses and bottle of wine with the ‘eat out to help out’ discount. Staff were friendly and attentive and also didn’t take themselves too seriously (waiter brought me out a little spoon for pudding after my boyfriend jokingly requested a big spoon for him and a little for me for our shared dessert). When things go a bit pear-shaped, the way staff are able to handle it really makes or breaks the whole meal experience and the scran and scallie staff were fantastic. We were happy overall when we left. An extra thanks to the waiter who recommended OX184 as the place for us to continue on our evening - we had a great time there into the early hours!

Go for the Table d’Hote menu. This is a relaxed, comfortable restaurant with friendly attentive staff and a small but beautiful Michelin starred menu. The steak pie gets 10/10 for the filling with a real marrowbone “pie funnel”. But, and in my book this is a huge BUT, a pie must have pastry sides and a bottom and this one doesn’t. This is a delicious steak casserole with a shortcrust pastry top. And all you get for your 17 pounds is the pie - really? Some mash and broccoli is an added 9 quid making this a very expensive lunch. In contrast my fellow infers went for the table d’Hote menu which was much prettier and delicious than it sounded and far better value. A no brainier this one, go but go for the set menu!

The chicken caesar salad starter was delicious, much more chicken than I was expecting, lovely flavour and very tender. My husband had the seafood ravioli with Asian consommé, which was light but tasty. We both had the Wagyu beef burger and chips which was also very flavoursome. Chips were cracking. The restaurant was busy (it's not really a pub!) and whilst the food was nice, we felt the service was a little fast (starter arrived extremely quickly and main course too soon after the starter) - i was a little disappointed with the ravoili consomme (filled with mussels and crab) - it was very dried out in appearance before the consomme was added and it was a bit bland. My cod & peas were delicious but overpriced at £26. We also thought the wines were very overpriced with very few choices for under £33. Nice but not wonderful.

I almost never leave reviews, but I felt I had to because I felt so ripped off here. I'm a local and had time to kill before work so I popped in for lunch. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, but I got the smallest piece of avocado toast I've ever seen for a tenner. I'm still hungry. I sort of knew it would be a mistake to go somewhere touristy but now I know I definitely won't be back. There are nicer places on Cockburn Street, never mind the rest of the Old Town.
