Scottish Malt Whisky Society - Glasgow in Glasgow City

Shabby entrance belies the warm and plush interior where the welcome is warm and hospitality generous. Members only. The food menu is not huge but big enough. I would recommend either the Haddock and chips or Haggis neeps and tatties. The whisky menu on the other hand contains more than can be consumed. The expert advice from the staff will help you make good choices. The Malt of the Moment is always worth a try.

This SMWS location was a fun time for sure. Service was a tad slow and the vibes/atmosphere inside was less impressive than the Edinburgh SMWS locations. Regardless, we still had a solid experience and our group picked up a bottle.

Always love to come here. Makes the membership worth it. Always nice staff that reccomend interesting whiskies. The food is tasty and plentiful. Wish I could come here more than once or twice a year

Definitely got the most out of it having the steak + whisky flights of 3 only on Tuesday and Wednesday for €30

This place is really amazing. It is a private club so you will need to be part of a food tour to get in the doors.

Had always heard about the Scotch Malt Whisky Society so decided to drop in while in Glasgow. We were chatting with Duncan and he turned what might have been just a good experience into an exceptional one. His knowledge and enthusiasm for Whisky was absolutely top notch. Would highly recommend this spot for anyone interested in whisky.

Such an experience for out-of-towners. I would love to give fellow Canadian, Duncan, a shout here as I was blown away by his hospitality. He was patient with our many questions, was excited to serve us whisky that excited him, and was very, very pleasant to chat with. His knowledge is unparalleled and if I could, I'd definitely visit every week just to have a dram he could recommend. Excellent employees and establishment!

Heads up to anyone visiting you must be a member. I had no idea, as place was recommended to me. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon with plenty of seating available. I asked host about a tasting, he just scoffed at me and said that had to be pre-arranged (ok, didn't want anything serious, just to try a few drams, but no problem). No problem, I will just drink some whisky. Hr then asked for membership, which I told him I had no idea I needed. At this point I assumed he would tell me what was neccessary to become a member(I assumed a fee). Instead he just spoke down to me about places that would be more suitable for me. Out of curiosity I checked what membership requirements were, pay 85 £. I would have gladly done this. But he never bothered to ask. Oh well.

Went two nights in a row while staying in Glasgow. Duncan served us both nights and he was amazing - very friendly and knowledgeable. We asked for some drams with certain tasting notes and he put a lot of effort in to find something he thought we'd like within that palate. Took some of his other recommendations as well and they were great. He's a gem. Place otherwise is nicely designed and comfortable, a nice change from the bustling and loud restaurants.

Pretty much members only. Apart from that, or because of that, great friendly and efficient service.

Was invited to this very nice and elegant place and I was not disappointed with the large selection of the finest malts and our lunch arrived piping hot and was delicious. Our waitress Amber was very attentive and made our lunch very enjoyable and I was amazed with her knowledge of the various malts. Would highly recommend going to his establishment just for the experience.

Wow wow and wow! Fortunate to be invited here by a friend who is a member and it exceeded my high expectations. Incredible choice, of course, but we could have stayed all night. Food looked excellent, sadly we didn't have time to sample any

Good whisky, better staff. Stopped in on four separate occasions during my stay in Glasgow and had a quality experience every time. Ate dinner on two of my visits and enjoyed both meals and thought the quality was good for the price. Everyone on the staff I encountered were both friendly and very knowledgeable. I received excellent service and asked for the staff to pick out drams that they thought were interesting or personally liked, and in turn I received some really great whiskys I would have never picked out for myself. The selection is huge with all sorts of different whiskys from over 100 distilleries. I strongly prefer cask strength whisky and basically every bottle they have is. Alan went above and beyond for us and really made me feel welcome and appreciated. I cannot wait to make another trip to Glasgow and stop back in.

Went here with a friend and had some nice whiskies. Place is very nice n swanky. Its members only. Did sit in a little closed section and seating could have been better. Did ask the waiter what Malt of the Month was. To be greeted with I really should know that. As my friend said Yeah well there is only 12 of them..lol

Far from a a private members bar experience tbh. Can’t say my idea of luxury is a crumpled paper menu in a chilly basement bar with overpriced cocktails (for the non-whisky drinkers). Menu not updated on website-pretty basic :-/ Didn’t fancy staying for food, although it did look good. Back area at kitchen battleship grey uninspiring decor. Bathroom area basic. Nice whisky displays & great service though. However, we’ll stick to Leith vaults-sorry :-(

One of the best bars... I suppose I have to add, in Glasgow, and that it's a member's bar... But it still is one of the best bars. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, great food, AMAZING whisky. And good beer thanks to West Brewery too. Fab times. Thanks to the team.

Had a great tasting experience with Lamb curry today and it was excellent.

Not for the first time we enjoyed a great evening here. The staff are very knowledgeable regarding the whiskies that are available. Relying on their recommendations worked perfectly, had a wonderful time and couldn't recommend it highly enough

Fantastic experience friendly staff very helpful

Brilliant visit this evening - dinner and ambiance were first rate but it was the patient and attentive service we got from Tim that was the true highlight of the evening. He took time to discuss our preferences in whisky and help guide us towards the right drams a Glen Garioch 19yo and a Blair Athol 15yo - these went down a treat and were reasonably priced. Looking forward to a return visit the next time we're in Glasgow.

They should have a day pass. £85 to get in if you're a visitor to town is dumb, particularly when it's a Saturday night and the place is deserted. If it was £30 and you got something to drink, we'd probably have done it and spent twice that.

Excellent good and service. The cocktail I prefer wasn’t in the menu but they made me one specially. I usually frequent the SMWS in Leith or Edinburgh and this was my first visit to Glasgow. The SMWS never disappoints.

An oasis in the middle of Glasgow. If you didn't know where it was you'd walk straight past. A very cosy yet spacious bar / restaurant with really friendly and knowledgeable staff. Either pick a whisky from the magazines on the table, or tell the staff what your taste is and see what is delivered, you won't be disappointed! Hundreds of different whiskies to choose from. Had dinner there too and the food was spectacular. Started with the smoked salmon mousse and whisky smoked salmon slices. Easily the best smoked salmon I've had in years. The ox cheek bourguignon was spectacular. Unbelievably tender meet, creamy mash potato and perfectly balanced flavours.

I was invited by a friend to come to the SMWS for the first time this Friday. Never been before and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. We had some nice food before getting stuck into the drams. They bottle everything themselves so you need a bit of guidance to choose some drams - the staff were brilliant at recommending different whisky’s to suit what we would usually have. I loved one so much I bought a bottle and decided to sign up for a membership so I can go again on my own. My friend got a bottle for recommending me which is a nice touch! Can’t wait to go back and check out the other venues.

I have visited the London SMWS - I phoned ahead and asked for special permission to bring an extra guest. They oblidged and thanked me for having the foresight to avoid an awkward situation. 1 month ago I tried to do the same thing at Glasgow where I was one short for membership and instantly refused - Glasgow SMWS loss as I was coming with a set of Americans who wanted to take 2 bottle each home (8 bottles lost). Asked to buy an outturn and when I went up to the till with my referall coupon was told this was not valid at the store - another bottle lost. Last night my friend with membership went in and had a drink and booked us all to go at 7:30. We returned at 9 - they could not find his membership and refused to let us order drinks. The lady servers was very rude and muttered something under my breathe about me which I asked her to repeat. I have referred over 10 people to SMWS - who have an excellent selection of outturns. The three of us will now not be renewing ...you let yourselves down.

Awful. Staff are pretentious and rude and not a reflection of Glasgow at all. I would be embarrassed if foreign visitors think this a true representation of Glasgow or Scotland as a whole. Absolutely negative experience on the 3 separate times I have visited. I believe in 2nd chances but sorry 3 strikes and you're out. I will not be renewing my membership and will never set foot in any of their premises again!!!

Wonderful bar with a lovely atmosphere. Staff are always very welcoming and knowledgeable on whisky - staff members Tim and Chris gave us some great recommendations. We also saw them deal very well with a group of 12 people last night who didn’t have enough memberships and then became very rude and aggressive with the staff. A lot of bad reviews seem to be because guests turn up without memberships and expect to be allowed in with no questions asked - it is called a “members bar” surely it’s pretty obvious that you need a membership! Takes a few seconds to check this on the website. Would highly recommend.

My first ever night in Glasgow I have reserved a table for dinner through the app provided in Google. During the reservation process, When asked, I had the option to state I am not a member and the app confirmed my booking. Only when I have arrived at the SMES I was told that I MUST first pay the annual membership fee to enter. They should be clear about this both in their site and their booking platform. So my bad vote is for not providing their services.

The best SMWS location bar none! Worth every penny of the membership cost if you don't already have one. Whisky, bourbon, Armañac, cognac, rum, etc. Barrel proof and exceptional service. A must experience!

The SMWS bar … what else is there to say? Many unique choices by the dram, as well as other spirits and food if you are so inclined. I’ll take my cold barley soup thank you!

Was quite shocked at the experience as I was told this location was the best. Only had one pour as my server barely came by to check on me, didn't seem knowledgeable, or chat about recommendations. Was quite attentive to the gentleman's table next to me though. Been a member for over 3 years so was sad this was my first experience here.

Came here for the first time because my friend had a voucher for a whisky tasting. A couple of wee hitches on our side but we're quickly sorted by the staff! Amazing team there, friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable. I've had a membership for a wee while but it was the first time actually going, regretting not going sooner now! Will definitely be back. The decor is amazing and the place clean and tidy. When I think about a great place to drink whisky, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Glasgow ticks all the boxes. Might have to get along to the Edinburgh ones and see how they match up.

Visited the Bath Street venue for the first time on Tuesday - a beautiful yet casual members bar. Service was superb. Tim led our tasting and was brilliant - a credit to your organisation with some great suggestions of drams to enjoy.

Fantastic venue with endless choice of single malt whisky. Nice and friendly staff, delicious food.

If you love whisky this members only club is a must! I went as a members guest and it is the bougiest place I have ever been. The whisky is phenomenal, the snacks are tasty and the vibe is "very fancy old man in his study" but in the best way. Prices range from pretty standard bar prices to insane once in a life time. I drank middle of the range drams which were £13 each

Fantastic place to chill and enjoy a few of the best drams of your life. I'm not sure it's open to the public or if it's members only, but if you can it's well worth a visit. There is no better place to sample a fine selection of the finest whiskies.

Absolute disgrace of a place pre booked a meal and flight tastings for my partners birthday, arrived and was given the tiniest table ever to eat at ,It resembled a lamp table, as i have an essential tremor i need a proper dining table was told basically that everyone books and that was all that was available unbelievably appalling attitude by the bar manager, now trailing town for somewhere to celebrate

My first time at smws and it didn't disappoint. We were looked after by the most fantastic member of staff called Reyce. His knowledge was outstanding and he certainly is a credit to the company. Great day thank you.

This is such an amazing hideout in the middle of Glasgow. The Staff, Alan, Ellie, Reece, Duncan and company are very welcoming and know their craft. This is not a pub per se (as you have to be a member), however if what you want is an amazing place to have a deep conversation on a payday friday... this is your place!

Amazing place to learn about whisky. The bartenders are great and knowledgeable.

Did not sample the whisky but the wine & snacks were delicious (croquettes sausage rolls). Beautiful ambience. Lovely little separate booths

First time visiting this place and will definitely be back. Great food and excellent service made for a very enjoyable lunch. And then there's the main attraction - the whisky! A truly incredible selection awaits.

Superb first experience at SMWS BATH Street after joining the society. Attentive and friendly staff, all the whiskies we tried were interesting, also enjoyed a sharing platter and bought a bottle at the end of the night. Will definitely be back and hoping to try some of the other branches soon!

The only place to go for lovers a Malt Whisky. You have to be a member of the society but it's an investment worth making. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly, happy to recommend or just take your taste buds on a journey

Cosy and quiet on a Saturday night in Glasgow. Outside on the streets it's like a Hieronymous Bosch painting, inside the SMWS it's an oasis of whisky.

Nice basement sympathetically converted to its present use. Superb staff willing to impart their knowledge. Also serves a limited menue of well cooked food at a reasonable price. (Un)fortunately only for members.

Very nice place with an air of sophistication, I was invited along as a guest, the staff are very friendly and attentive and are really good when it comes to describing and suggesting different whiskies to try. I also really enjoyed the little booklet describing the different selections which contain some amusing names and descriptions, well with a visit.

Had lunch with a member of the society and had a great time. Food was excellent and the choice of whiskies simply unbelievable. Well worth a visit.

City centre location, a fantastic range of whisky and friendly, knowledgeable staff to guide you to the right spirit. What more could you want? Very much worth the membership fee even just for the access to the city locations. Also serves well-prepared staples like haggis, neeps and tatties...but you'll want to stay for the cozyness of it all and of course a top class dram.

SMWS is a great place in the city centre to go for a quiet drink or meal. As their name suggests they specialise in whisky but don't worry about inviting friends who are not into whisky as they offer other drinks. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable if you are interested in tasting different whiskies.
