Scholars in Ceredigion

Very underrated pub in Aberystwyth. It's always my starting point in every Aber night out. I was a frequent patron during my time in uni and after; from 2018 till 2023. Scholars Bar a fantastic venue to meet up with friends and have drinks with. The tables are ample and spacious, enough to accommodate large social groups. I'm sadden to hear it's temporary closed even under a new management. Hopefully, it gets the love it deserves in the near future if it ever reopens.

First time I visited this pub and it is awesome! Pool, darts, cocktails, jukebox. Great atmosphere. It's out of the way so not a pub you would just walk past, but it's a must find.

Decent place. Friendly staff. Haven't been here for a while, slightly strange atmosphere. Music played is rock and metal, which is cool enough. Dove bar vibes. But the decor is the same as it was years ago, country pub filled with antiques kind of feel. Doesn't quite gel with the music and atmosphere. But it's OK. Still a great spot to stop off, and great staff.

Friendly enough, but this is very much a young person’s pub and I’m not young. Electronic dartboard, a table tennis table, juke box on an app, but worst of all, no real ale. Pasteurised American fizzy beer that has been shipped across the Atlantic but nothing local. No atmosphere whatsoever.

I never leave a review and although the place itself and the musician was good... the toilets were not in a good condition and looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a long long time. They were absolutely disgusting and it has put me off coming back.

Still a great warm and friendly place, wish it like many other pubs in the town had greater opening hours but understandable why not.

If your a student in abersytwyth this is the place to be.

Great little bar with friendly staff and a great selection of lager, cider ,spirits and pub sports. If you are looking for real ale, and I'm not, I would look elsewhere.

Finally, no real ales 😝 and utterly soulless; not even haunted by the ghosts of its Crystal Palace past now. To think I once disdained it for not being quite as wildly alive as the St Albans Crystal Palace. 😓

This is the worst bar I have ever been in Aberystwyth the staff is very rude and does not accept a Swiss I’d. I feel very embarrassed that a Swiss citizen cannot get served a drink because I am have no British driver liscense or id. I don’t recommend they are very disrespectful.

Yes this is the place to go! The staff care about their customers they don't rush you too much to drink up. Aka you have about 30 mins after last orders. They walk around make sure everything is okay and great music!

This used to be an excellent place with the best food in Aberystwyth but no food now and poor beer. Gone downhill. Very disappointed.

It was a nice place, when we arrived there was a pub quiz which sounded interesting, drinks were fairly inexpensive too.

Excellent pub with a lovely welcoming atmosphere, fantastic staff and great beer. An excellent quiz night on a Sunday night and a very well run and attended open mic night on a Thursday night. Great place to meet up with friends.

Scholars was one of Aberystwyth best kept secret (that several people knew about). A great pub. A great atmosphere. Very outgoing staff! Very affordable food which was great quality too. One of the best carverys in town. The place has some real character. Unfortunately upon visiting in August 2019 I found out they no longer do food. This is a real shame! It made Scholars a stand out pub in Aberystwyth. I would love to see the food return! (It's also quite far from Warrington pets and exotics which is a shame)

Just popped in on our way back to the hotel this afternoon and discovered this hidden gem! A real ale pub at very reasonable prices. Friendly staff and great music! Will come back next time we are in Aberystwyth :)

they've got this so wrong. the food situation is odd; carveries only on sunday but only til 7pm and no food on monday at all... and they wouldn't even let us bring our own food (most places not doing food allow this i find) i didn't bother going back later in the week. toilets; no handsoap in the gents all sunday evening, still none on monday evening so hygiene is clearly an issue especially for a food venue. website says 4pm opening monday, we arrived at 4:10 to see barmaid on her phone and turning us away saying it opens at 5pm. maybe she should have been checking the state of the toilets.

Fabulous carvery always hot lovely food. A grest quirky place. Highly recommended.

Nice place. Lots of seating upstairs. Tasty Sunday roast but the line for food is usually quite long. Pool table and darts are available for games. Decently sized bar for drinks. Quiz night Sundays as well.

Very welcoming pub. Staff very friendly. Ate here Friday and the food was excellent. Piping hot and fresh and very generous portions. Also had the Sunday carvery due to being snowed in and having to extend our weekend. Great value for money. Will return for sure.

second visit to this great little pub in the heart of Aberystwyth town centre and yet again we were not disappointed, good choice of drinks at reasonable prices. The food is your typical pub grub menu but each meal we were served ha good portions, was extremely tasty and cooked to perfection. nothing seemed to much trouble for the young waitress and not to mention the friendly laid-back Brummie bar man.

Been twice, great both times! Not stingey on the meat, great sunday carvary.

A regular for us, good mix of people, drinks and atmospheres. Never too busy and never too quiet either, pool table, TVs showing sport, Sunday carvery (worth a try) and regular drinks promotions. Often features strange bearded men taking selfies at the bar 😂

Lovely pub, friendly and good value for money

Our 'local' for three years even when living in different places with plenty of pubs in between. Lovely owners and bar staff, couldn't be better. Pool table is a good edition along with darts! Atmosphere is amazing with the option of a personal choice of music and live bands playing sometimes. The staff go out of their way to help, no matter how awkward the customer is being without a grudge, they are always polite and there for a friendly chat! Also, excellent food, they don't skimp on the portions! Definitely recommend a visit (or two) if in Aberystwyth.

The staff are absolutely lovely, with a rustic and authentic local décor. Always guaranteed a good pint, jager shot, you name it. It is good.

Came here for a carvery and stayed for the pub quiz. The girl with the brown hair behind the bar is really helpful and a good laugh for the quiz (even is she can't pronounce things)

sunday carvery here is lovely and reasonably priced, never been disappointed. would say come early as it does get full and if your disabled you might want to go elsewhere as toilets are upstairs and a lot of different levels even on ground floor.

Four of us older ones visited Scholars we all had pasta of different sorts and all found it delicious. Best I have had in a very long time. Beer was really good amd the staff were really pleasant. We will definately return when we are next in the area.

Visited here on Sunday (8th oct) was in aber visiting my daughter for her birthday, knowing I love my Sunday dinner she recommended scholars.. welcoming staff on arrival, served quickly and efficiently, the Sunday carvery was delicious opted for the 3 meats beef, pork and Turkey.. and plenty of choice veg.. yum yum will definatly visit again

Let's be clear I like Scholars and have been going there for two years but yesterday's visit was a bit of a let down. The staff are polite and helpful but the place is under staffed with people being left standing at the bar waiting to order drinks whilst the bar staff had to clear tables and serve meals. The construction of the bar means that it's difficult for staff to see who is waiting to be served between the two sides of the bar- open up the bar and it would be a lot more efficient! I think £12 for a pizza was a bit steep and the other main courses seemed expensive. Credit though for offering a 'Freshers' menu that was reasonable. Beer was around £3.40 a pint but the range of real ales was limited. Decent enough pub with a strong emphasis on food but just starting to feel 'tired'. I hope things can be improved.

Great rustic pub, popular with students. Great reasonably priced food generally to Italian cuisine. The Sunday carvery is probably the best I've had. If you are partial to real ale, they have a great selection of those as well.

My friends and l were after a halfway decent Carvery and were told about this pub. Staff were friendly and carvery was plentiful and tasty. Vegetarian option not a problem. So far all good. However, every surface touched was sticky. It's not a 'cared for' pub but for some that may be its charm. Also looked like a pub often frequented by students. This pub is totally inaccessible to those with mobility issues and wheelchair users. On the ground floor it's up and down levels make it hard to negotiate. Further, toilet facilities are housed up a flight of stairs, with no accessible toilet at all on the ground floor. We didn't know this when we went in. So if you're hale and hearty, young and fit, this might be the place for you. Otherwise avoid it.

We read all of the great reviews of this place on this website and were sadly disappointed. We walked in - no one spoke to us - we sat down at a table and after a 10 minute wait decided to fetch the menus ourselves - they were sticky and dirty - as were the chairs and tables - after another 5 minutes of looking at the unattractive menu, we left and ate somewhere else. This may be a great pub for drinking, but for eating - not so much.

Sunday dinner here is probably the best you can get in Aber. Who needs a Tony carvery when this is so much better.

Serve Sunday roast all day, very tasty!

Went for a roast and pizza with kids to find out no pizza on Sundays despite reading flyers saying pizza and roasts available. No roast potatoes, beef very chewy, very limited veg. Not as advertised; won't be back!

Looking for a good Sunday roast this is the place to go! 3 meat choices and you can eat as much veg as you want, good selection of cask ales and a nice atmosphere. Would suggest you book a table or arrive at 12 and you will get a table but not perhaps where you would want to sit. Fresh vegetables replaced frequently by the friendly staff, so no chance of running out. £8.95 for the Sunday roast!
